    Skied these and was blown away. If you get on them especially on edge on a pitch, it feels like a racing ski, very quick edge to edge and so stable with amazing dampening. That's where this shines. So solid underfoot it gives you confidence. Does not need much turn initiation, but does it ever hook up to your turn, short or long. I would compare this to the characteristics of a Volkl Mantra or Kendo, however the Stockli wants to race more than the Volkl. This is a keeper.

    I couldn't agree more with the comments on a Ski over 1000 £ in my case.
    After seeing you review of the
    Kastle FX95HP
    I bought last seasons model for around £450.
    Wow. The difference is incredible. More than any other ski I've tried.
    It's certainly worth investing in a premium Ski.

    Our awesome experts, which binding do you recommend for these? (Hopefully something light so it doesn’t add much extra weight.) I’m 6’, 190 lbs, experienced skier. Head Nexo LYT 120 flex boots. Also, which length skis would you recommend?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 года назад +3

      Marker Griffon is a trusty favorite among our staff. We mount more of those and Tyrolia Attack 13s than any other binding by a long shot. The 90 mm brake of the Griffon will fit a little more snug than the 95 mm Attack brake, so a Griffon would look quite nice and of course function well too. A Look Pivot 14 could be cool too, but that adds around $100 compared to a Griffon or Attack 13. For length, I'd expect the 177 cm would work well for you. 186 cm feels like overkill; it's a good 5-6 cm taller than you, which feels unnecessary in a ski as stable and smooth as the Stormrider 88.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 года назад

      It does, but typically race skis or frontside carving specific skis where you don't have to worry too much about edge impact. ABS sidewalls are much more common these days. It's spelled "Phenol"

    • @lindseybalser3009
      @lindseybalser3009 4 года назад

      Phenol is only used in Stockli race skis, simply for the unbeatable power transfer. ABS is the sidewall on all current Stormriders and all mountain Stockli skis for durability.

    I heard somewhere else that it takes Stöckli 10 days to build a ski, due to
    a long curing process at different stages during manufacture.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 года назад +1

      Yeah, I can't remember the exact statistics, but the amount of hours put into a single ski and also the amount of different hands that touch it (for specialized tasks) is pretty crazy. When you start to think about all that stuff, you start to understand why they're more expensive than big box brands.

    • @dick91p
      @dick91p 4 года назад

      The feel of Stöckli, Kastle and Volkl skis is addictive, both under your feet and in your hands. Like I commented elsewhere, I got a pair of Kastle MX89’s for $255.00, and I’m blown away by the quality; it is tangible. I can’t wait to ski them. And, again, the price of these high end skis is worth every penny spent.

    I have made lots of comments with you guys.. My first pair of skis that I got last year when I came back to Colorado and skied for the first time out here in 20 years was 2016 Stockli Stormrider 88 x 177. For groomers and hardpack nothing beats them. I would imagine the 2020 and newer models are a little bit lighter than mine but I am not trading mine in;) I am interested in the Stormrider 105 and probably around the 177ish length. My 88s got stuck in the crud. The other thing I would say about them is that they wanted to go fast and have long radius turns. I could go slow with short radius turns but it took lots of effort and when there are a ton of people skiing and not many runs open I don't think it is worth it. I like that the newer 105s have an 18m turn radius which is smaller than the 19m radius for the 88s.
    I did pick up a pair of 2021 DPS Wailer F100 x 184.. 15m turn radius. Probably going to be the perfect crud, slush, powder, tree, ton of people ski. But I am a Stockli person and I still want the 105s too;)

      Pretty similar, although I find the Kastle feels stiffer. The Stormrider 88 is exceptionally smooth. It has a softer longitudinal flex, which helps give it that smooth feel, but torsionally it holds an edge just as well as the Kastle.

    • @MrDox123
      @MrDox123 3 года назад +1

      Ski construction details aside, in my opinion the speed limit of a ski is primarily a function of ski length and skier mass. Given a certain ski length, the ski will reach a "speed limit" (become unstable and eminently un-skiable) at some critical skier mass. For example, I ski a pair of Brahma 88's at 180 length and weigh 210 lbs. It's a ripping super stable stiff ski and I can ski them in and around 60 mph (100 kph) without hesitation but..., I do feel that I am reaching and occasionally exceeding their speed limit. The same ski at 189 (longest length) has no practical speed limit for me but might for a 250 lb skier. So the ideal "speed limit" Brahma ski length for someone of my weight would be about 184 cm. Likewise, I have skied the Stormrider 95 at 184 length and with that ski I had no hesitation to bring it up to 105 kph. So the 4 cm additional over the 180 Brahma's make a difference to me. I suspect I would feel similarly about Brahma's if they existed in 184 length (now they finally do) - no speed limit. In short, if you are looking for skis with no "speed limit", make sure you are selecting the right length of ski for your weight. The assumption of course is that if one is looking to ski as fast as our mental and physical fitness allows, then we presumably also have the technique to do so. :)

      @@rezakhalvati6150 Reza, I’m glad it was useful. I noticed that you mentioned you are 6’ and 190 lbs. I’m 6’1” and 210 though my ideal weight is closer to 200. Point is that you were inquiring about ski length and speed limits. If you are experienced as I believe you also mentioned, IMO you shouldn’t be skiing, or better yet, buying, any skis shorter than 180 unless they’re slalom skis. Nothing wrong with skiing a pair of SR’s at 177 but I think the 184’s will be a better match to give you that confidence of a rock solid platform and no “speed limit”. I tend to go 180-184 on shorter radius (15-18m) narrower skis (e.g., Laser AR’s) and 184-188 on longer radius (18-22m) wider skis. I ski 92 and 98 mm underfoot skis in 185 for example and they are just great. It is more the exception than the norm that I’m not skiing on the skis longest available length unless they don’t have lengths in the 180-188 range (e.g., Blizzard all mountain until recently). I would consider a powder ski longer than 188 but unfortunately I don’t have much opportunity to ski snow that requires boards with more than 105 mm underfoot. Even so, I suspect a ~110 mm underfoot ski at ~185-188 would be fine in most but the deepest powder. If you decide to pick up a pair of SR88’s you might want to inquire with Bob at SE (he’s got a similar build to us) or others who have skied them in different lengths. I stopped asking (perhaps never started actually) about ski length a long time ago. I do ask about just about everything else though. Build and geometry in particular.
