  • Exhibition match from the 2022 World Star Chinese Martial Arts Competition. The event was held April 2022 in Houston, TX.
    I won a gold medal in fixed step push hands -- scoring twelve points to zero -- and another gold medal in advanced Yang style solo form. After that, none of the other men present would agree to compete against me in a third event.
    Seeing this, Zoe (Chen style Tai Chi) generously volunteered for an exhibition match.
    This match was held under restricted step rules:
    * Score a point by causing your opponent to lose their balance.
    * Lose a point by stepping sideways across the tape, or moving your back foot to the front.
    * Striking is not allowed.
    * Contact below the hips or above the shoulders is not allowed.

    I love her face too! And both smile and enjoy the push hands. My Sifu was about the size of yellow shirt participant and I am much shorter than his opponent and we trained and played in this format countless times. I am trained in Chen Family Tai Chi. If I had some time I would do push hands with both of the competitors! It is really nice to see them enjoy the art and apply the energies.

    I love her face, just by her expression, you could tell that she was going totally from sensitivity and technique. That takes a LOT of practice.

  • @jeffrey8832
    @jeffrey8832 2 месяца назад +2

    It also helps that you are twice her size. This is no proof that Yang is better than Chen style. It could just be that you have either practiced a lot more than her or just because you are several weight classes higher than her. You always have to take that into consideration.

    Rather dubious giving this a style versus style title given the massive disparity in size and weight of the two competitors. Open push hands competitions have weight categories for good reason. Sure, a smaller person can beat a larger person if they are more skillful, but all else being equal, weight and size confer a significant advantage.

      @@taichipandabat6153 agreed entirely. Always a great learning experience, not to mention very enjoyable, to come up against someone with better skills. I haven't competed for some years but loved big push hands comps back in the day. They're a fantastic way of checking whether what you think you know actually works against someone who honestly wants to get the better of you. This can be very different from theory and philosophy. Funny enough I enjoyed all the matches I lost every bit as much as those I won, just as well as they were the majority. My few medals are more a testament to perseverance than skill. I would strongly recommend anyone who is serious about their tai chi to compete at some point. If not, why not?

    I never understood tuishou competitions... Is it a competition of rooting, deflection, balance? Because sometimes I see them just pushing and pulling vigorously like a sumo competition. This one is more subtle to me, and seems more legit, but still, the height and weight difference seems to be mismatched enough to make a significant contribution, correct me if I'm wrong. Still, good job to both.

    Anyone who is silly enough to think that current tournament push hands in the West is representative of Taijiquan is giving away the fact that they don't understand Taijiquan. Even in China only a few of the tournaments are considered to have good and representative competitors, In China, though, they will often allow other styles, etc., to compete and some of, for example, the Shuai Jiao competitors will do OK up until the last rounds. Then they tend to get hurt as more "sudden power" is used.

You post a fluff video that purports to show a contest between the Yang style and the Chen style and neither one of you does Taijiquan ... so you think the way to defend what you do is to offer a challenge. I used to waste my time and "push hands" with the winners of push hands tournaments until I simply gave up hope about anyone who does "tournament push hands". Waste of my time, again, even bringing it up. You just go on and do what you do and think what you want.

    In ancient China they named that as Tai Chi Quan, in the Western this is Wrestling. Train this with Greco Roman wrestlers, those would be very interesting videos, and a fine experience for you.
