  • The RE4 Remake Separate Ways DLC has been out for a few weeks now. As with all Resident Evil game releases, there is always controversy that follows. Today, I decided to compile the WORST RE4 Remake DLC Hot Takes and give my thoughts on them. The last hot take is by far one of the worst ones I've ever seen...

This is madness, I have been talking about the 10 dollar price tag a lot too. Because I think it's a FANTASTIC price! DLCs nowadays are usually way more expensive than that. 10 bucks usually gets you a skin. The Winters expansion was 20 dollars and while I haven't played it I heard the Rose campaign was pretty short, and honestly third person should have been a free update along with the merc characters (RE4R added new merc characters alongside Seperate ways for FREE)
Everyone I have talked to have been positively surprised when i said the DLC was only 10 bucks.

The 3rd person mode was nice to see. They took a game that is 1st person and made it 3rd person. That’s not easy, devs should be compensated for their work. They let fans who aren’t unable to play 1st person a chance to play it.

In my opinion, SW being 10$ is more than fair. It's a large DLC, and has alot of replayability. The voice acting of Ada and Wesker was a problem for me in the beginning, but now it's grown on me. I actually prefer the new voice of Ada. In my opinion, the more "emotionless " voice fits with the darker, less cheesy tone of the RE4R. And as for the yellow paint, I have nothing to say. The guy who started complaining about it in the first place had nothing better to do with his life and was just looking for a reason to complain. That's all from me😅😅 Great vid RC. I think in seperate ways the new ada fits more but I still don't Like the recasting. It's not Lilly's fault she isn't Tara strong the thing is with va is that its not about doing impressions it helps but it's about being able to voice a charater that sounds different but jermy irons didn't put on a voice for scar he preformed scar with his actual voice. It's not her fault she was miscasted.
Also you cant blame voice actors for taking the role. If I was a voice actor and I would be stupid to not take opportunities.
The new wesker is because dc Douglas did some stuff I won't explain but it makes sense why he was not wesker in re4r they definitely should of used the dead by day light voice actor but new wesker it's a casting thing.
Now I think they should of gone with the Dbd guy for weskin. And should fo stuck with re2r adas voice. Regardless I think its a casting thing.
Although lily should learn to not just label it as racism. Yes lily the new ada called the critics racist for thinking. To be fair she got a lot of unnecessary hate but she should learn to just understand that people just want ada to sound like ada

I disagree about taking out Assignment Ada. Your mention of "taking out a rock" is a false equivalency. One background item missing is not equal to an entire game mode being left out.
Its part of the original game that was removed. It wouldnt have taken much to add it back in. It wouldve been a nice little added unlockable at the end of the main campaign until Seperate Ways could come out. Use it as a way to unlock additional bonus items.
I think the missing beats from RE3 started this whole missing content issue. I think everyone can agree RE3 remake was a missed oppurtunity. With how much love and respect was paid with the RE2 remake, with added beats, costumes and items, any missing content in remakes was always going to be an issue for fans of the original.
10 bucks for what we got in Seperate Ways truly is a bargin, it added a lot of replay value and i disagree with the sentiment it is a waste of money.
But your arguments for the removal of Assigment Ada is its own hot take.

Once he saves you from the villagers when you pass out, then on the island, when he gives you that briefcase to blow up the island. We all know he has powers, so if he can just show up whenever he wants, why not get the sample himself instead of relying on Ada? This is just a question I want to know if anyone has a good one because if he just did it himself, he'd have the Amber as well as Krausers body which he ends up having in the end credits.

I still have not yet played the RE4 Remake myself, for I am still waiting to see if a “Gold Edition” comes out. But judging from my impressions, it looks like a very solid remake which surprisingly justifies its existence and has proved my belief wrong, that modern Capcom can’t/won’t ever do an RE remake fully right (it just makes me wish RE2 and especially RE3 got the same love from Capcom).
If I were to nitpick anything about the RE4 Remake, it would be limited to minuscule things like a few weapons/bonuses being left out (namely incendiary grenades, P.R.L. 412, and a couple costumes for Ashley/Ada), plus a few isolated things the original seems to have done better (like Salazar having more interaction with Leon, the original’s Novistadors being more threatening, the original U-3’s chase across the container rigs being more dynamic than Martinico’s chase, etc.). But even so, the RE4 Remake with its “Separate Ways” expansion appears to add/improve so much more that it outweighs any small drawback I might personally have.
As for “Assignment Ada”, that mode felt like a mere prototype demo for “Separate Ways” anyway. So the RE4 Remake’s more fleshed-out SW seems to already give more than enough content cover the original’s AA/SW modes combined. Granted, I still think AA could have been a worthwhile addition to the remake, if its gameplay was more differentiated from SW. But I won’t consider its absence to be a notable downgrade, given what I just stated beforehand.

Seperate Ways is just more remake content for those players who really enjoyed the base game and plan on playing it for years to come. If you're the type of person to play a game once and consider it over and done with then of course you're gonna want everything for free. The yellow paint debate is completely unrelated to the dlc. I don't have any strong opinions about it but I do think the yellow paint could be removed without any issue. The paint is only "useful" the first playthrough and after that you should have a rough idea of where boxes and ladders are without needing to have yellow everywhere. It is a game mechanic that becomes outdated/unnecessary the moment you start your second playthrough.

Here is my hot take. I think all the cut content that was added back in Separate Ways was not up to the same quality as the original.
It was cool to have the Gondola and Laser Hallway return, even the U3 which was my favorite boss fight in the original (well the first half of it anyways). And I gotta say I was very underwhelmed with some of the choices made.
Like I do think the U3 in the remake wasn’t a bad boss fight, I just think not having the Escape Room segment made it kind of boring.
The Gondola was more or less the same and I liked it in the remake my only gripe I wish it was a little longer.
As for the laser hallway, I think this would have been a good time to add more variety in the quick time events instead of just having me press the same button to get through every laser beam.
That being said though, Ada’s gameplay is really fun. The puzzles were actually getting my brain working, and this expansion surprised me with the scenarios it put me in with the new tools. Grappling Hook is really fun, they added the classic dress as an alt. (I wish it was one for one but whatever it’s fine), and they even added Leon’s RPD outfit along with extra Mercenaries content
    9/10

I played the original RE4 as well as RE4r day one and the remake is superior in every way. Also, I agree, the original Separate Ways was rushed and a bit choppy while the remake is way more consistent and flows well to the main game. I was disappointed with RE3r but I think Capcom got the message and did not disappoint with RE4r and Separate Ways. $10 for DLC this good is well worth it and I say, Capcom needs to keep putting out amazing remakes as in betweens for the mainline games. Can’t wait for RE5 and RE6 Remakes (both of which need to be toned down in the action and increased in the horror) as well as CV. I am still hoping for an RE Engine remake of RE0 and RE1 (RE0 needs to be reworked entirely to be more consistent with RE1).
I also hope that Capcom one day decides to bite the bullet and put out a proper RE3 remake that is more in line with the original. Or at least a Directors cut, adding in a lot of the cut material.

And ten bucks was a steal imo for this dlc. Hell id have paid 20 for it. My only complaint and its not really a huge deal to me is there isnt an assignment ada outfit to choose but again thats not that big of a deal. We got so much out of it and she got 2 more outfits options anyways. If anything this kind of makes me want a game where Leon and Ada work together as a couple who are on the same team. One thing that is wrong here is the OG RE4 was released on the Gamecube not the PS2 (being one of the few exclusives on Nintendo's console) and the Gamecube version didn't include either Separate Ways or Assignment Ada either. Those extras were added when the game was ported over to the PS2, which I believe allowed them keep the price slightly up for a game that had already been out for a while...which is no different than selling you DLC in my humble opinion.
As for the yellow paint, that is a weird hill to die on really. Could they have added an option to remove it? Sure, they even added it in Shadow of the Tomb Raider to remove ledge highlights but they didn't so it is what it is...don't feel it affects the game.

I think this iteration of Separate Ways is flat out better than the OG. Sure, both of them have Ada re-treading familiar ground, but there's definitely less of it in the remake. It's good that it doesn't have a Krauser boss re-fight, I found that to be a little lazy in the OG. It's was pretty good overall, more of the same, but Remake was great and getting some more of that for 10 bucks is perfectly fine with me. The only thing I didn't much care for was a couple of story elements they changed that didn't really pan out.
Like, Ada getting infected didn't really turn in to anything significant. I like the extra banter and expanded characterization with Luis but it seems like Ada's infection was just an excuse for her to not take the sample when Luis got it and leave. Also, having Wesker physically present was a bit of a head-scratcher. Unless I missed something, it really didn't change anything and they didn't do anything cool with it (I was expecting a Wesker/Saddler meeting somewhere).
Lily Gao's portrayal of Ada still comes off a little flat but it's decent. I really like the much more menacing tone for Wesker in the remake and opposed to the sinister, almost cartoon villain sound in the original. And having Ada actually talk to the merchant is hilarious, as equally hilarious as the fact that he seems to have a crush on her because he's hiding all this extra merchandise from Leon.
If there was one real criticism I could direct at Separate Ways, it would be that I don't think it was necessary to give the stuff they cut from OG RE4 to Ada's scenario here. U3, the laser hallway, etc I felt were all appropriate cuts from the original game, so I was wondering if the devs always intended for that stuff to be for Ada or if it was included in Separate Ways as a response to backlash over their exclusion from Leon's campaign.

I think the funniest thing about these complaints about it being released as DLC is that IIRC separate ways didn't even come out till the PS2 version meaning you had to buy a whole sperate console and version of the game to the OG GameCube version

I loved the DLC!!! I love ada! ❤️
I was just happy that they didn't make her less attractive and kept her high heels even if it was a boot version! lol
I thought 10 bucks was cheap compared to what some gaming companies charge for a DLC. It was good, it was longer then I thought it would be. Nothing is perfect, I feel like people are really fishing to find something wrong!

@RapidCrafter I very much enjoyed this remake more than the original honestly an RE 4 wasn't my favorite game series that goes to Resident Evil Revelations 2. But I'm going to go on a bit of a essay here on my opinion of this game. I genuinely like this game I have no problem with the tank controls or fix camera angles I feel like that really suits in this series but that's gone but I'd say the problem I have with this game legitimate is just the smaller mechanical problems which can easily be fixed. grabs doing instant damage, I don't mind the Crouch button in the game being used for dodging but the problem with using it is that a grabs are not programmed as high attacks( a good example being the granados able to grab you and Krauser's grab attack) so the mechanic for the crotch button feels inconsistent.( this becomes a very apparent in professional mode and sometimes in hardcore but that's not too big of a problem in that difficulty) there's no invincibility when certain actions which leads to cheap damage. And they really need to fix stagger in hits done when it characters get hit. And I don't mind that one shot doesn't stagger enemies in the original. But I would not like it to be random as it should be I could shoot one dude 4 times in the head and have no effect and sometimes they could run to my bullets like they have armor on when my hits should be staggering them. This is my only problem with the game but I still like it. I say this because I want to give good criticism without being absolutely negative about it and I feel like these are small things that could be fixed if giving good criticism about it. if you read this I would like to hear your opinion on this( forgive me if this is too long of opinion)

I’m surprised it’s $10 it should be more because of the details and the other stuff

It's a great dlc and totally worth 10 bucks, but I agree with the VA thing, she is emotionless most of the time, like she didn't really wanted to do it at all.

I frankly don't have many complaints about the DLC. Really only thing I'm annoyed by is that while Mendez and Saddle got to do something in the DLC, Ramon didn't. With all the cut out scenes between him and Leon in the OG they could've easily made those for Ada and Ramon instead. How cool would it have been if Ada does the whole throw the knife at Ramon's hand thing and that's why Pesanta is chasing her.

Yellow paint takes out the exploration in PS1 days you have to figure it out where to go and you can interact with.

I've played the new DLC and honestly? I liked that the content was longer. Ada's playstyle was actually fun and different enough from Leon for it to feel fresh. Sure, the areas weren't new but anyone that played the original RE 4 would know why. I mean, it even states in the DLC plot description that it's Ada going around the same area as Leon where she crosses paths with him at times and works in the background. It's telling the player what she was doing the entire time. Granted, the game would have been fine without us having to know more about what Ada was doing other than the obvious but it was nice. Sure, the voice actress could use some work on her character but it wasn't so game breaking that it distracted me from the DLC content, itself. Price tag is actually fine in my opinion.
As for DLC in general though? I come from the OG era of RE. I'm used to the game ALREADY having everything the game is supposed to have. Not this "Oh, pay for DLC outfits" when I'm used to the outfits being something you always unlocked base game :p I mean, granted, you still DO get free costumes to unlock but...yeah, not a fan of that when it comes to things like that since weapons and outfits should be just unlockable content. Story DLC though, fine with that especially with the amount of content they provided for this one as it feels worth the bucks. It's definitely better than the OG's Ada story content...if you could even call it that.
Anyway, just my two cents. All in all, Separate Ways worth the $10. And it's not asking much. I mean, they could be like Kingdom Hearts 3's Square Enix asking for $50 just to re-add characters that should have been in the base game : D Be happy Capcom didn't. Now...if only Capcom will just remake Dino Crisis and Code Veronica, I can die happy T_T

Best DLC ive played for anything in a long time. The extra time as Ada got me to actually like the new Ada voice. A lot of the content that was originally cut showing up was amazing and some of it being expanded on even more made the 10 bucks worth it.
