I as them in Chicago for the first time, in November. Amazing!!! Band-Maid does a ton of instrumentals. Check out, from their official site, Onset (LIVE). Misa has an epic bass solo in this one too. Without Holding back is another great instrumental. Saiki did have surgery years back and I think they started to incorporate instruments, plus Miku's "MAGIC TIME" and other cool interactions with the audience, to give the vocalists a break. It was joked the a ton of their songs were named after Saiki bathroom breaks, "Onset", Without Holding Back", "Don't Be LOng", etc. These girls have an amazing sense of humor, lol.

Welcome and thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 I witnessed this song performed live twice with this MV quality in Tokyo and dropped my jaw twice 😲. I believe so did many of American audience at 12 venues in the last October. This song has been normally played in the middle of the setlist to give Saiki some break. They played this song, however, as opening at three festivals (including Aftershock, Sacramento) and in Guns N' Roses concert in Japan as support to the legendary band. Yeah! they showed off their skills and talents to the audience who knew nothing about the girls in maid outfit on the stage. I felt as if I heard them screaming "Hey guys! Listen to us and open your eyes wide! We are not the persons that you think ! Salute us!" So please salute these girls 😄 I, an old Japanese, have already done it, with a deep bow, a few years ago.

From Now On was the first official instrumental MV although they have had plenty of instrumentals and put them as videos on DVDs etc. They played From Now On plenty of times at concerts and it just allows Saiki, the vocalist a break. Songs, Instrumentals, you name it Band Maid are good at it

A few years back the vocalist hurt her voice and had surgery, she has since recovered. Because of this Band-Maid changed how they do things to allow the vocalist time to rest her voice, one of the things they did was to add some instrumental songs to the longer shows for a rest break, such as this one and Onset. Probably something every singer/band should adopt for long shows.

Band-Maid has no openers and does no encores. They will go flat out and leave absolutely everything on the concert stage. Hi,
They do a few instrumentals to give the singer a break during live shows. Saiki (the lead vocalist) had polyp surgery several years ago, and was told to take breaks. That is when they started composing instrumental pieces for live shows. 'Onset' is probably the other instrumental people will recommend. They used to be only live performance songs (not on the albums), but now they put them on their albums too.

The Bass here, 'Black Smoker' has been her backup / secondary bass for a couple of years now as she had a new distressed yellow fender jazz stlye bass custom made for her. And recently she has unveiled her new Jaguar style bodied bass so 'Black Smoker' is probably third in line. I'd guess she used it for this MV because it fitted the mood better, her yellow one would have stuck out like a sore thumb.

I caught five shows on the October US tour, one of the best weeks of my life. Going to see them again in my hometown in May - but at a festival, so the short set will be frustrating. You'll be glad you saw a full 90-120 minute concert in Nashville.
A bunch of tips from the last tour for first-timers: entry lines started as early as 6 a.m. in October because the Dawn Patrol wants to be on the front rail and lots of General Admission folks want to get as far up front as possible, but they had a volunteer-run honor-based number system so people could go pee/eat/etc. without losing their place. However, VIP tickets should still be able to get pretty far up front if you join the line an hour or two before entry time. Meeting fellow fans in line is a good time in itself. Band-Maid does not have opening acts, so "Show starts at..." means they play then, or at least within 30 minutes if there are technical delays. DON'T SHOW UP AN HOUR LATE THINKING YOU'LL SKIP THE OPENING BAND, THERE ISN'T ONE (barring some drastic change from the usual).
Also, LiveNation/Ticketmaster started mixing up "Doors Open" times with "Show Start" times on their listings, so it's best to double-check on the _r/BandMaid_ subReddit or _BAND-MAID Fans Café_ Facebook group and/or call the venue. (The subReddit will probably have a thread for each venue with info about parking, nearby restaurants, etc.) Also, venues would have reserved seating with better views and table service - and sometimes even reservable in advance, so you could show up right before showtime and skip the line - for an additional fee, but that's _through the venue_ and not a ticket option, so you'd have to call ahead or find a staffer once you were in. Make sure you get in the correct line for your ticket category. "Fast Pass" add-ons are redundant if you have a VIP ticket, VIP gets you in an hour before GA anyway.
The merch table lines can be crazy long. Bring earplugs, preferably good ones; the Maids are LOUD and so are the people next to you screaming after (or along with) each song. If there is swag included with VIP tickets, prepare for it (also if you buy merch on your way in): bags bigger than clutch purses are generally prohibited at venues unless they're clear, but you can stuff a plastic grocery bag in your pocket to hold swag/merch. If there's an autographed postcard in the swag, two pieces of stiff corrugated cardboard with rubberbands to protect it from being bent/crushed/torn are a good idea.
Of course you will want to document your experience, but remember that there will be people with really good equipment and experience making fancams which will be on RUclips within days if not hours, so choose your moments. The person behind you doesn't want to watch the concert through your phone screen which is mostly recording the phone screen of the person in front of you. Moshing is generally discouraged unless somehow you can form your own self-contained pit with a perimeter of minders to keep non-participants from being slammed into.
And finally, you MUST join in for Omajinai Time! The Pigeon said so.

From what I have heard Saiki wanted an instrumental to melt faces.

  • @glacieractivity
    @glacieractivity Год назад +7

Their instrumentals are called "Saiki's pee break". In their earlier years, they played up to 100 gigs a year and Saiki could not take that. I think both she and Miku in fact needed to have surgery on their vocal cords. So Kanami started writing some instrumentals and also Miku sing some lead during the middle of their gigs (they last up to two hours). In this mid-session Miku also takes absolute control of everything during "Omajinai Time" where she throws spells at the audience (I kid you not!. All this came about to give Saiki's voice a break.
I really enjoy Kanami's instrumentals. Her classical piano training really shines through in the instrumentals she writes. But you can also hear that she is an instrumental composer if you search for "Band-Maid instrumentals" (she composes and roughly write out an arrangement) but it is Miku and to a lesser degree Saiki that fills in the words after Kanami has made the demo.

Aside from their handfull of original instrumentals, they also take their popular songs and redo it as an instrumental, sans vocals. Usually done on a Blu-ray DVD and packaged with a CD album as a special. I think it was originally intended to spotlight the actual playing of the members. A lot of those clips are floating around on the net.

BM are already famous for their instrumentals before this track came out because they have 2 others that are amazing! - 'Onset' and 'without holding back'- that all fans love. I think they have 1 or 2 more too that are very good.
They have ALSO released a special entirely instrumental version of their unseen world album! So as you can see instrumental stuff is already a fairly well known part of them.
As to why they developed thier first truely loved instrumental 'onset' - They go at their sets long and hard- they play like 30 songs! So to give their singer Saiki a vocal break in the middle of their sets, they will play say an instrumental and maybe one of the songs Miku takes lead vocals- and do a little Miku lead MC section too- that way Saiki can go off stage, have a drink, and rest her voice for 15 min.
This style of singing wasnt what Saki was used to, nor for so long, and in their earlier days she did some damage to her vocal chords from over use and had to have an OP on them, (that was like 6-7yr ago) so since then they are more careful with her voice.

John, thanks for the insights. I can understand drums a bit, but guitars escape me. Every time I describe Band Maid to a friend, I just keep repeating "amazing" like I've been kicked in the head by a horse.

Members advance pre-sale start on Monday and GA sales on Friday. Oh, Japanese bands call it a One-Man show. No opening act. And usually Band-Maid don't have encores either. I've only seen them do 1 encore and it was a gig in Japan.

This isn't their only instrumental. The first time I saw this was live in concert and it was magical. Band-Maid put on long shows and Saiki gets to rest. Also, Miku has some songs she sings lead on to extend Saiki's pee break. "Time" and "Rock in Me"

They do have a singer on this song, it's just that she sings guitar. From the Spice interview 10/7/22 " 'Guitar solos are meant to be sung.' - Tono Kanami (2022)."

Yep, Kanami uses an Eventide H9 prallel to her main tone and even with the added gains during the song the H9 is still there. Makes for an interesting tone..

Thanks John for keeping the Awesome BAND-MAID at the forefront. You'll be hard pressed to find a Rock band with consistently great Rock music over a 10 year period. And they're FUN to boot. With no egos to get in the way. And I've been listening to rock music since the 60's. Finally saw them last year in Philly and Jersey and hope they make it up the east coast in August. Check out their other instrumental video ONSET-LIVE. I consider more than 50% of their catalog as great and Awesome with the rest just really good. That's out of around 130 songs. I know you'll enjoy the show no matter where you're standing but get there early to get a rail position. It'll make for a long day but well worth it to see the most beautiful Rock band ever playing the most Awesome rock music. Peace. 46.1

There's something you mentioned in this video that really had me thinking. That a band has the balls to put out a music video for an instrumental. And the label gives them freedom to do it. I think there came a time with the success of Band-Maid, after they were given free reign to write their own songs, the execs at Pony Canyon opened the door to let them do whatever they wanted. Basically, "Here's a budget Miku, go have fun."
    I can see it now:
Miku: We wrote an instrumental and Saiki wants it as the opener of UNLEASH!!!!!. ぽ
    Pony Canyon: OK cool.
Miku: And we're opening the Okyuji's with it. ぽ
Pony Canyon: OK, absolutely. Great idea.
Miku: And we're making a music video. ぽ
Pony Canyon: You got it. Do you want it animated?
    Miku: Not this time. ぽ
    Pony Canyon: Anything else?
Miku: A horse named Kruppo. ぽ
    Pony Canyon: We're on it.

They have quite a few instrumentals. Dig Deep! MISA has been using Black Cloud Basses exclusively since she switched from her Fender Jazz bass to 5 String basses for the heavier BAND-MAID songs, but other than this standard Black Smoker, don't look for them in the music stores. They are all one offs. In addition to this she has an SG Precision, a reliced 5 String version of her old Jazz Bass and a new Jaguar style bass as well. Zemaitis did put out a limited run of Miku's Flappy Pigeon, but they were snapped up pretty quickly. You might still find one on eBay or Reverb.

They always play an instrumental during their live shows, so the singer gets a pee break, and can give her tonsils a rest. They are so popular the ladies started putting them on the albums, now even more so that we get an actual music video!!! 🤘

The record company does not tell Band-Maid what to do. Rather, Band-Maid tells Pony Canyon what they are going to do. And give Saiki a break. Out of 140 songs they have five instrumentals. Saiki needs a pee break once in awhile. Kanami has written so many riffs she can use them as she sees fit. The artistic freedom this band enjoys is exceptional.

I'm thinking the lead guitar was the vocal, but would not mind vocals if they should decide to add them, it's happened before... They have four instrumental songs now. Their song "Play" was originally their first instrumental but Saiki loved it so much she got Miku to add lyrics so she could sing it. So, Kanami went back and composed "onset" as their first instrumental. "Onset" was just to be used as a live vocal break or a show opener, so it did not originally come out with a music video. Then they recorded "onset" at a live show in Japan. The live video became so popular that they started making music videos of their instrumental songs after that.

I would suggest you be on the site to buy tickets early. Then tend to sell out really, REALLY fast. Like some in just an hour. Wife and I saw them at Aftershock last year, then 5 days later in SF (apparently with BusterVentura08) LOL. I do recommend VIP if you can because getting in early for a good spot and early Merch access rules. Waiting for part 2 of the tour to be back out west again. Can't wait for more reactions since you said you want to get to know the discography before.... *hint* LOL

Do any of y'all get the Sense like I do, that Band Maid is finally truly breaking out, sorry, breaking new gate?? I see new reactors all the time now on YT, and the already on-board reactors realizing that these ladies are THE band right now, no matter how many other bands they review.
Here's the thing. Band Maid has maid ( pun intended! ) their mark already, anybody who falls into their 10 yr rabbit hole will find an existing catalog of compositions 90% of the bands in the R & R Hall of Fame couldn't come close to , nor play as well live. The only thing they have lacked coming out of a small nation like Japan, is marketing and visibility. The visibility is increasing daily now it seems, yes, we have a ways to go but the momentum is positive.
I would like to be a fly on the wall in the music industry I have to believe the Lolla show will contiunue to influence festival organizers to add BM and get them towards or on the top of the marquee.
asking reactors this question a few places

Hey! You'll love the show.. although, one thing might throw you off, and that's Omajinai time. Just play along and do what the Pigeon tells you to do LOL.
This is only their 4th instrumental song in their catalogue. I believe this song was written as a powerful opener for festivals, but during the US tour last year it was played in the middle of the set. They usually paired it with one of Miku's lead vocal songs to give Saiki a couple song break. I think there were some shows where they gave her a 3 song break even. It's all to manage her voice and fatigue, as they tour a lot of shows in a short amount of time.

they do sets with a LOT of songs. The vocalist needs to have breaks during the show to let her voice rest. So some songs have no vocals.
