    Those old Rovers are never ending heartache. Shame they’re so stylish.

    Richard get Rovergauge plugged in and look at the live data I had exactly the same running issues with regards to mixture and misfiring. After replacing ALL ignition components to no avail, thanks to Rovergauge I was able to determine the brand new cheap pattern part airflow meter wasn't accurate as my idle voltage was set around 2.2v i adjusted it down to 1.5v as per the book no matter what i couldn't get it to run right. Swapped for a second hand Hitachi/Lucas 3AM Airflow meter and it instantly fixed it with rover gauge finally confirming the correct voltages throughout the rev range.
    Also because mines running a green tune resistor with no lambda sensors the 14CUX mainly relies on the AFM signal to set fuel trims so any discrepancy will instantly affect the engines performance. I bought 2 aftermarket AFMs neither worked it took a lot of head scratching to work out it was them all along as the car came to me with running problems so i didn't have any history as to why it ran bad hence why i started replacing the ignition system first. Great video as ever mate and good luck!

      I use rovergauge quite a bit, alas it is not great at spotting some of the more obscure issues like a dead injector nor a dodgy plug, then it comes down to basics such as shown.
      That said I have a couple of RV8 14CUX cars that are struggling. mostly with crap aftermarket parts and Rovergauge is very good at spotting a dead TPS or out of range AFM. I also use it to ensure that the correct tune resistor is being used. All clever stuff and every day is a school day.
      Cheapo chinese AFM is a nightmare, as I am led to believe the "hot" wire is just a resistor and as such is no where near as refined as the OE Lucas 5AM. OE AFM is easy to destroy with brake cleaner etc

    Ooh,the joy of a leaking diffpan! It's a pain to weld, the horrible diffoil seems to soak in to the cast-iron somehow? I wonder why the pan wasn't cast with the rest off axel? That car is a real kinderegg, full of surprises!

    • @nickboylen6873
      @nickboylen6873 Месяц назад +1

      Axles aren’t cast - they are sheet pressed into tube sections with seam welds, the end flanges for the stub axles/swivels are machined plate friction welded (spun under high pressure) onto the ends of the welded tube. The pan is thin pressed steel sheet welded on after the axle case is welded up. Only the diff housing is iron or cast.

      Of course, my bad! But still, the pan is a bit thin, and a bugger to weld!

    That soft dash should have an electric lock on the low drive ,it that stops you moving it at the wrong point.

      I heard this elsewhere and the parts manual suggests from JA chassis numbers. I have yet to see the solenoid and interlock though on a classic. In this case lube on the pivot helped it to get going

    What new sparks can fix its amazing!

      what correct plugs can fix is amazing. Quick bit of context. The customer bought the car with these plugs fitted. after some poor running issues and on my recommendation he fitted bosch super4 plugs. alas these were then swapped back to the original incorrect items as part of me diagnosing a monster misfire issue which turned out to be distributor iirc

    What a pain, always something new to annoy and frustrate. Is it worth swapping that king lead round so the straight end goes right into the cap, bet the right angle end fits the coil just right?

    • @churchhouseclassics
      @churchhouseclassics  Месяц назад

      yes but the issue here is that the coil is up behind the LH headlight box. Because of this location it is supplied with a big rubber splash guard to protect the LT side of things. Alas that needs a straight connection. Customer got short change (from the manufacturer) when requesting such a connection and as it turns out they chopped the wrong bloody end off to fit it. All fixed now and by me for pennies

    If it goes back to LPG will the spark(ing) plugs get changed again ?

    • @churchhouseclassics
      @churchhouseclassics  Месяц назад +1

      The sparkplugs are now Bosch Super4, they work beautifully with LPG and seem to last for ever
