Great demonstration Jake. It was like watching a sports competition. Very exciting. It never ceases to amaze me how videos like this can get thumbs down.
I feel like this is a perfect challenge for graphic designers especially ones who design logos since they always have to simplify things and turn them into symbols
I think your drawings resemble the stages of an artist's development. I'm at about the '1 minute' stage! It definitely illustrates why it's important to ....take.....your.....ti-ime....!!
This was my favorite exercise from Ivan's Cartooning class. It's so great to see other artists talk about this. It really helped me think about how I see my personal style.
I don't do cartoon work and generally work on more realistic things but I have been wanting to loosen up my style and play with things more. This challenge was helpful for that too! I'd encourage even non cartoon artist to give this a go!
You should do a video about the jobs in the artistic world, where they are, where to start, and how to get them. Love your video and art style your an inspiration that motivates me to keep going in my art career! Thank you!
Great challenge! Posted my first one. I've really been wanting to work on my ability to draw cats from memory. I think doing these will help me increase my anatomical vocabulary and help me develop my own personal shorthand. Thanks!
Great idea! I'm going to go do it now. Thanks for responding to my email. I put in my order for Drawings II & III. Can't wait to have it on my shelf! I was tempted to also buy digital versions to view on the road with me on my iPad Pro. :)
What an amazing and simple way to refine a character design as well as hone your skills. Thanks for sharing this man. Started laughing when you made the "whoo" noise when the time was getting away from you. hehe.
OMG! That scared me a lot! I was completely terrified. I am working on my #marchofrobots. I didn't know about it till I start looking your videos. Jake, you are one of those illustrators who inspire me. I really appreciate all these amazing things that you are sharing with us. Cheers!
This is such a fantastic idea! At first I wasn't sure how this technique or challenge could help with defining a personal style. But as you did it I could see what you meant and it made me smile. I really like your final car design, it definitely has your unique touch. I have a college project of branding a folk band, they find lost and forgotten folk stories and bring them back to life. I wanted have stories as part of there brand so thought of creating a comic with cartoon versions of band. But when I started sketching they were so detailed and I didn't know how I could simplify them and that scared me, making the project seem overly daunting. Now I've seen this I will try the 8 minute draw and hopefully find a balance and my own unique touch. Thank you! Keep up the good work.
Thanks! It says it's called Zebra Fude Brush. I see you mentioned there the Pentel Pocket Pen is your "work horse" yet you still use the Zebra one. Any particular reason?
Thanks Jake for this challenge. Question: Before I saw this video I was thinking of doing this challenge in reverse. Draw something in 5 secs, then go from there. Any thoughts about this? AND are we to use a reference or is this based on imagination and memory?
Can I start from 4 minutes and only do 4 drawings?, would i get the same benefits from 8 minute and 6 drawings? or is there some sort of golden number?
Absolutely awesome. I never did that challenge but I will surely do it! Do you think for this challenge is fitting the best for drawing from imagination or it is better to draw something from a reference? Or it doesn't matter? A small suggestion if I may,:the video timer would be perfect if you would add 5 seconds pause between each timers. In your video you took almost 10 seconds to get ready before starting your 2 minutes drawing. So technically you did it in 1mn 50. ;-)
Funny, I've just been watching a sculpting workshop video from James Van Den Bogart* where he talks of an idea from one of his art directors. The idea is that 5 is perfect (on a scale from 1 to 10 or if you want to be a math purist then from 1 to 9 :D ). 1 is completely bland and effortless whereas 10 is completely over the top ridiculous. So the advice would be (especially for beginners struggling to establish a concept/style) to start by drawing:sculpting a 1 followed by a 10. Once they've analysed the two extremes they'd be ready to make "perfect" design. Anyway I found a nice parallel between these two philosophies. *here are some links to the source - it's a paid tutorial, mnid you: facebook.com/jim.vandenbogart/ www.monstermentor.com/animaltomonster

I actually applauded you out loud by the end of the 8 minutes. Haha! Nice work!
Jake I tried this with my students and the LOVED it. This is an excellent teaching method. We'll be doing more.

As someone who hasn't drawn in years but still enjoys the technique stuff behind drawing, this was incredibly fun to watch :D
you draw so charmingly. The way your hand just moves.
Very cool challenge. I'll give it a go. Trying to get my drawing game up! Thanks.
This is a fantastic idea. Thanks Jake! For the timer too!

Nice. I'll have to try this.
I love this idea. The color of the orange pencil barely shows up with your current lighting setup. Can you start using something a little bit darker.
I love that well done! I have to try this!

I found it interesting that you started with the tires on all but the last drawing.
I just uploaded my 8 minute drawing video. It was pretty challenging but a ton of fun.
Hey Jake, very nice exercise!
Mind telling me what's the brand and model of that pen again? And would you say it's better than the pentel pocket one?
+Aeonbreak I don't know off the top of my head, but there's a link to where you can buy it here: inktober.com
Thanks! It says it's called Zebra Fude Brush.
I see you mentioned there the Pentel Pocket Pen is your "work horse" yet you still use the Zebra one. Any particular reason?
I'll definitely be doing this in the future. :)

It's all about imagination and memory. Try it both ways and see how it goes. Let me know!
Can I start from 4 minutes and only do 4 drawings?, would i get the same benefits from 8 minute and 6 drawings? or is there some sort of golden number?
Cool excersise
Right on! Great video man. Thanks for snapping about it because I wouldn't have known. My submission coming soon...

The five second car is literally what all my car drawings look like.
Can i use reference for this challenge?
Awesome
What is that intro music you have? It sounds really good. I'm gonna try this out, it seems like a fun exercise!
Coconut Fella did u ever find out what it was ?

What type of paper or sketchbooks do you use?!
