I think hobbies are important for getting ideas. I recently got licensed as a scuba diver, and now I understand how that equipment works and how to draw it, and opens up new doors.

"Don't forget what you made" just rang REALLY true to me since this afternoon I was looking back at old content, drawings, and videos that I've made and thought to myself "wow...I MADE THAT?... Can I do it again? Just like that! Cause I'm proud of it." Loved your video!

I get fresh ideas by going outside and deconstructing the color combinations I see. If I take the colors from some trees, some grass, and the sky, then use them on something completely different, the colors will be a pleasant combination while also being something unique that maybe someone else wouldn't have used in that context. I like using sunset colors for character outfits, dead tree/grass colors for my antihero, etc. It just works really well for me.

I like to do TV studies. Doing quick drawing off film and tv to get the composition down. I recommend starting with the Big Combo. Great film noir and a great way to beef up your black and white composition.

This is originally from a book I read - Steal like an Artists; I'm sure you might have read it, but basically there is this advice I follow which is, follow someone you admire, learn about them, like do deep research. Its like, you're a journalist of the person you admire. You get all the information related to him/her, so you understand how they came to where they at. And then you branch out one more step, who did they admire? Repeat the process.
So I guess in a way, this is more of learning who the person behind the work you admire is, than improving creative bank account.

This will probably sound strange but I like to check how my filter is doing by using my dreams. I fill drink a glass of water before going to bed so I wake up in the middle of the night to jock down ideas. Some times I'll get some fantastic ideas for future work.

Love your idea of having a image bank of inspiration. One thing that has helped me is to use that folder as my rotating desktop image. It allows me to continually digest the images that i have come across that spoke to me or were simply fun images. It has saved me numerous times as that spark pops up at the right time in an ideation stage.

  • @MarioManzanares

Gosh, this gave me a lot of ASMR. It was nice to see you drawing, and as someone who struggle with sci fi and mechanical stuff, this served as inspiration as well. I'm trying to get better at it, because I always draw characters (very organic stuff) and I find robots and vehicles to be an extremely difficult thing to do. I always thought that this kind of things must be very "hard surfaced", but it's so refreshing to look at people that can achieve a great sci fi look just with pen an paper, an even wiggly lines. Also, I'm starting to understand that looking at things that are not actually "art" (like a motorcycle) can help a lot getting out of your confort zone. So, in a nutshell, thanks :)

what i suggest is to use a medium that is very different from your norm. i spent most all my life so far (im only 19) just drawing, pen/pencil, but now in college im taking various sculpture classes, and they really widen your perspective to little details, especially if you find a medium which really sparks your interest, because when you start using that medium you'll start seeing everyday object in a whole new light thinking of what you can do with this new medium.
mine was wire, then watercolor. with wire you start to notice things like baskets, knots and ropework, that bit of wire that's been flattened on the road that has formed some weird jumbled shape, hair; then since i like it when i can make something that does something, i learned to make hinges and sliders, you should look up kinematic wire sculptures (kinematic kineomatic kinetic something like that) there's some interesting stuff, kind of like the straandbeasts. watercolor was also enlightening but i think this comment is long enough :P
side note, taking a sculpture class and a drawing class works decent, as most of the time you can only really sculpt in class,so there's no real work outside of class(aside from the obligatory essay of course) so then you have time for all the drawings you have to do.

    • @jakeparker44

Thanks Jake, you have some helpful suggestions for creative bank accounts but you didnt mention music. I am a music freak and recieve lots of inspiration from it. Lyrics and sound gets my imagination flowing and if you havent tried it, listen to different types of music while drawing.

  • @allluckyseven
    @allluckyseven 9 лет назад +1

I look at _a lot_ of "cool stuff" in general: people whose art I admire, sites that post cool things regularly, comics, movies, etc. But to fill my creative bank account, I have to draw. I have to study those things, or art pieces or whatever it is. Otherwise I just don't keep that information.
If I need to draw something specific, I do research. I'll google that particular subject, read about it on Wikipedia, sometimes going from link to link to link, which can take me to different subjects, just barely related to that first one but that will influence what I'm going to draw, or just stay there, to be used some other day. In this case it is not necessarily imagery, sometimes it's a concept, or history, or philosophy, or a different culture, etc.

I like to go on Wikipedia and browse the random mode, thereby exposing myself to stuff I've never seen before. Same goes for dictionaries, I often scroll through latin, greek, arabic, norwegian etc. dicts gather inspiration through free association, e.g. “Zikkurat“ -> a babylonian temple but maybe a tank class... Those online services serve me pretty well.
    Thanks for your advice!

Thanks again Jake! Great advice. I remember an interview you had a while back and you were talking about Missile Mouse and Indiana Jones. Haha, I used that method with a couple things and it really worked. Maybe you could talk more on that? or how you go about it now with Rocket Racoon.
but as for the creative bank, I know I use to practice by looking at comics from all over the world after a while I start filling my bank with panels, angles, draftsmanship but I actually wanted to try and rearrange the characters and the panels around. Its like a puzzle everything is there just tell it differently with everything thats on the page already, you know?
I hope this didn't confused you.
    Stay awesome Jake!

Nothing fuels my creative bank account like reading history. It's like they say, "History is stranger than fiction." So true! People can make stories up, but they can't make up history. History is too crazy to make up, it's amazing. But I think this applies to all fields. Science is stranger than fiction, too. Just go out and learn. Your art will be much better that way than if you're just influenced by pure entertainment.

Some observations: first, he seems to have a light, light touch on the fineliner. Considering the fact that these gave a really limited range of pressure sensitivity, that would seem really reasonable. I keep pressing too ruddy hard.
Second: he only ever seems to ink a line ONCE - from what I've seen, and I may be wrong, he doesn't go over his lines over and over. This keeps them clean and crisp?

I really admire the detail in your robots! The question that comes to my mind is since your creative bank account is filled with robot stuff and the like....do all the details of your robots actually make sense mechanically? Because to me it seems that you put those details down way too quickly and yet very naturally.
For example at 12:33 when you decided to add another thing to the arm. What made you do that? Did you think there has to be more detail for the drawing to improve or rather for the mechanical sense of the robot itself?
    Either way, I am amazed!

Can I copy your art? For learning of course!! I'm still a beginner in art and your style really inspires me. If I ever post it online I'll sure give full credit to you and maybe even link the original. So can you give me the permission to copy?

what pencil do you use for sketching? the orange one with eraser

    • @miriamrobarts
      @miriamrobarts 7 лет назад +1

It's an Orange Prismacolor Col-Erase Erasable Colored Pencil
Jake mentioned it on another video. He uses the orange just because he likes the color.
There's a "My Tools" page on his website: shop.mrjakeparker.com/pages/tools
He linked everything to Amazon, so it's easy to find if you want to try out something you see on the videos.

What kind of colored pencils do you use for your sketches?

How is he sketching that so quickly?! It takes me forever to draw lines while constantly erasing them over and over!
Yes, I have been having too much trouble figuring out what pictures to draw. But how can I draw my own characters if I don't even know what they're going to look like?!
I don't know anything about pinterest, no matter how many times I tried to see that site without having to register!
Architecture! Children's book illustrations! All different kinds of things! I love variety, but I never realized my interests were so limited until now!!
Not connected?! Why didn't I ever think of that before?!
I've been trying to make my drawings as unique and original as I can, and that's a reason why I'm having too much trouble!
I don't have a Twitter account because I don't need one! I've barely done a single thing on Diviantart! What was the point signing up for that?! And what's flicker?
    Other artists?! Like who?!
How is he inking those sketches so perfectly?! I can't do that without making tons of mistakes ruining my drawing!!
So I really do have to go to the library and read tons of books to get inspiration?! No wonder my mind lacks so much! But reading long chapter books makes me sleepy to the point where I'm not even paying attention to myself! I hate reading long chapter books which take me months to finish!!
There must be millions of movies that I've never heard of! But I don't watch movies because my ears are sensitive to yelling! I'm always dreading that! Why was I born with Asperger syndrome?!
Watch genres that are exactly different from the genre you're into?! Why didn't I ever think of that before?! I'm always trying to look up stuff that are what exactly what I'm looking for, which usually isn't much help!
No kidding there's a ton of crap on TV! In fact there's nothing but crap on TV! And it does pull me in every time, distracting me from doing my chore! And it totally wastes my time, sometimes the entire night!!
Fill my head with books and films?! I never do that! My head really is empty!
I never thought about getting any inspirations from museums or shops. I'm an indoor person.
Video games are what I'm all about! But I've never seen enough of them, so I barely know anything about all those thousands of video game franchises out there!! What's Ratchet & Clank?! What's Persona?! What's Chrono Trigger?! What's Final Fantasy?! I could watch walkthroughs of video games, but that'll take too long and I don't have time! I'll never be able to make my own video games if I don't know anything about others!!
So I really am allowed to copy others' stuff? I've been trying not to take anyone else's ideas for my drawings, which is why I've been trying to make mine original, which is still a reason why I'm having too much trouble!
No one takes my ideas!! So I don't take anyone else's.
I don't have a sketchbook at home or an idea book. If I did, do I really have to carry them all over the place?
Like your drawing?! I'm jealous! Your drawing is perfect while none of the pictures I've ever made in my entire life can even compete!! I'm never going to draw as good as you or anyone else! I thought I was a smart, talented artist, but after seeing yours, I'M A TOTAL IDIOTIC FAILURE!! I'll never have a job in drawing or video game designing!! All my ideas are failures!! I'll always be a failure for the rest of my life!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
I watched this video in class on 6-9-2016. I couldn't comment while I was there, so I forgot what I was exactly going to type.

if you work hard you will become a better artist then you are now, it takes a lot of time and practice. Try not to compare your drawings to others, because it will not do you any good, just keep practicing and doing the best you can and day by day you will get better (you may not see it but if you look back at older drawings you will see the improvement) :)

+Artist Sam there's a fine line between stealing/copying and paying homage, or being inspired/influenced. It's hard to define, but people know it when they see it.
