This is disgusting and makes me sick to my stomach . I was 15 years old and pregnant by my rapist and I was forced to be married in the Salt Lake Temple and keep it quiet and yet nothing was done to those people involved . I have suffered lifelong trauma because of this but I stayed active in the church until 2011 when I had my records removed. It seems like the church looks the other way when women are involved in horrific abuse and yet kick out men just for talking about truth
I am so impressed by Nemo and was even more impressed when he talked about his weaknesses and that he doesn't speak for God. He clearly is trying to be aware of his Achilles heels and not become too attached to "looking perfect" or "being right." That is so wise.

The Fairview hearing where you used the leaders words against them must have REALLY ticked them off. You were brilliant. You are a person of great integrity and intelligence. What a loss for the church, but we’re still here for your content
I have deep connection with you, Nemo. When my parents could not convince me of their narrow interpretation of Book of Mormon racism, my mother with crocodile tears streaming down her face lamented loudly that she would have to spend eternity without her poor lost son. The psychological repercussions severely injured my ability to succeed at anything in life, but now at age 81 I am stronger than the Church and do not denigrate those who disagree with my philosophy. I have the strongest love and respect for you; may you reach that testimony of self-confidence at an earlier age than I did.
Sorry to hear the church is taking this un-Christlike action Nemo. What they don’t know is: “If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine”
I wholeheartedly agree. I want to add another aspect. Mormon leaders are super duper old, and they have not grasped the implications of the Internet. Excommunications worked well before the printing press. Even with Martin Luther (the German reformer), it didn't work. LDS leaders live in the 1400s. 😂
The last question in my "Court of love" was: if the decision of the council is excommunication will you use this as means to antagonize the church in the future? Yeah, it was not about me after all...
I got excommunicated as a teenager in 2003 and even though I hadn’t believed in the church for years and had no intention of ever becoming active again, it still hit me in a way that I didn’t expect. I went through a whole range of emotions after getting the initial letter about my hearing. Fortunately, I was able to work through them by the time I received the subsequent letter informing me of my excommunication. I wish nothing but the best for you, Nemo, and I hope you pass swiftly through the difficult feelings of this situation.
My 16 yr old brother was excommunicated in the early 70s. Another boy in our ward, who committed the same “crime”, was only slapped on the wrist. My mother went to the bishop to ask why her son received the harsher punishment, and they told her because our family could handle it and the other boys family was weaker and would probably leave the church. The unfairness bothered with me for years.
I find you very humble and honest. I am no longer a practicing member, but I do pray regularly to my Father In Heaven and I will keep your journey forward in my prayers. Honesty is always a good thing. Always.
I know this episode is completely different than your recent episode with Hayden & Jackson Paul, but the vast difference in maturity levels between those two young adult males and Nemo (all roughly the same age, I believe) is striking.
Mormonism is very infantile. When you go to Europe, most Christians have tackled with historical criticism, which the LDS faith hasn't (cf. "Deutero-Isaiah"). Thus, they are on the level of pre-1800 Europeans.

If the church thinks that a member is about to leave, they become like a stalker. Missionaries arrive at the doorstep daily. Should the member move to another city, the church uses its considerable records to track them down and continue sending Missionaries.
In a way, I agree with you, at face value, but at the same time they know that people exposing the truth of their behaviour is harmful for their recruiting attempts.
This is a disgrace. It makes the Church look bad but of course when the Church is run by 90 year olds, well that's it for Nemo. I hope he keeps doing what he has been doing. No matter what you do. You will present facts, present truths and nobody will listen. The time is far spent but keep doing what you are doing. We support you. Even those of us in the Church who are working for and hoping for change.
@daverichards. Well, these ancient cretins have been at it for many years and where they are is where they intended to be. So it cannot be attributed to their "age" every time they do ignobly. It is who they are. Age notwithstanding.
A comment about background checks. Since leaving the Mormon church I have worked at a volunteer at 3 different churches. ALL 3 required ANNUAL background checks for me to do any teaching, or work with kids. All schools and scouting do the same thing. I was never required to do that in the LDS church. Very odd.
When my son was exed it was so horrible! Psychologically violent is a good descriptor! He felt like he failed too. Then his wife was “counseled” to divorce him since he cannot take her to the temple anymore. Their divorce was horrible! Kids were damaged! All so traumatic and unnecessary! My heart and thoughts are with you!

Nemo is a brave, earnest individual who is one of the most significant people in my personal faith journey. He showed me that it's okay to give voice to my questions and objections. I'm deeply and endlessly grateful to him for giving me permission I didn't realize I very, very desperately needed. My heart breaks for the news. What they've done to him is cruel. For whatever its worth, I hope that he knows he isn't alone in spite of the petty actions of the bullying organization that is the leadership of the LDS church.
Honestly, this was bound to happen. Nemo doesn’t even pretend to live by the church’s principles, doesn’t believe in them, and spends most of his time criticizing them. If he were truly honest with himself, he should’ve walked away ages ago-his nonexistent faith would’ve shown him the door. Especially when you consider how comfortable he seems in his role as the rebellious one. Honestly, I might actually respect him if he had wrestled with these issues as a believer. But instead, he’s now leading doubters as an unbeliever, and we all know where that usually ends-loss of faith. There’s nothing remotely courageous about that. On my faith journey, I seek out people who inspire my faith, despite the imperfections. With Nemo or even Dehlin, you're definitely barking up the wrong tree.
@@NoteworthyAnalysis He was born in the church, served a mission and was married in the temple. He has lived it, and continues to follow every one of the church's standards. The one thing he hasn't done is sustain the brethren because he finds moral objections with the church's administration. Nemo listening to your thoughts has finally given me the courage to ask my Dad about his excommunication. I knew about it when it happened (my Mom told me and I believe I may be the only of my 5 siblings who know bc I caught on to his "sin" when I was in high-school) but I have never had the mind set to talk to him about it. We stand behind you Nemo!
@user-dk6oo1rg6v oh no he never stopped attending and was eventually baptized again (which I was also the only one of my siblings to know about) got his priesthood back and about 3 years ago got a temple recommend again. He did have to go without the Sacrament, no callings for a time etc but I think my younger siblings weren't old enough to notice and my older brother was serving a mission at the time. But it wrecked my Mom and it was so hard to watch them go through it especially because I feel like there was no support for my mom only leaving the focus on getting my dad back on the path
I agree that we should embrace "Mormon" as a signifier of hertitage and connection, given that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has so thoroughly disavowed "Mormon" as a term to refer to membership in the church. I resigned 20+ years ago. I'm not a member, I don't believe in the truth claims or attend (I'm an atheist), but most everyone who knows me knows I'm a Mormon in a very real sense. It's so engrained in so many aspects of how I grew up and who I am, that it's only natural for me to still identify with the heritage, even as I don't want anything to do with the modern, mainstream hierarchy and organization. "Mormon Stories" is similarly an apt name for a channel that is about the stories of people who have any relationship with Mormonism, regardless of whether they're on the rolls of the Corporation of the President. So, Nemo, I hope you make the choice in how you describe your channel that makes you feel good, but as the institution has dropped its claim on the word Mormon, you should not feel in any way dishonest or disingenuous for holding onto and claiming "Mormon" as something that describes you regardless of what happens. Since the church has given up on claiming the term, we have real power to define it in the way that suits us best.

Nemo feels like a friend I’ve yet to meet, so this really hurts to see how he’s being treated by the church. You’re a good person Nemo, and you’re on the right side of history, like John said!
Excommunication was used by Joseph Smith to retain power and punish his critics. The church still does it for the same exact reasons. A healthy organization does not need to kick out dissenting members because they are not threatened by them. If anything, they should double down on the doubting and struggling members. So sorry this is happening to you Nemo, they should be thanking you not trying to get rid of you 🙏🏻

It’s so sad to hear about Nemo’s Disciplinary Council Meeting! Why can’t the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints just face the Truths rather than try to just stamp anyone out that discusses the well documented conflicted past within their Church? The Church is clearly negating any positive impact the missionaries are doing by their rampart excommunication’s. Frankly I don’t expect The Church Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints will be around in another 100 years. People want a truthful, kind, loving Church to guide an be an example of in their life.
I am sorry this happened to Nemo, but I can't imagine its a surprise. Personally, I think he will be better off once the grief subsides. As for John's introduction, I sincerely hope he didn't mean to imply Nemo's misfortune was greater than the 911 terrorist attack, which resulted in nearly 3000 deaths. I do hope it's not some sort of oversight fueled by the insular nature of Mormon communities, and it's just because of the focus of the podcast.
Memo’s Stake president is my best mate, he’s a wonderful person and is one of the most Christ like people I know. I’m sure this hasn’t come from him, he respects Nemo to the point where he won’t talk about anything that is going on with me. I left the church 5 years ago and he treats me exactly the same unlike a lot of members. I’m sure Nemo feels the same way about his Stake president.
I’m sure he has, and I’m sure this will be upsetting for him, as I truly believe it has come from a higher authority. I’m in a difficult position as my Wife and 2 grown children, one who is a RM are still active. They have accepted that I no longer believe and will never go again. I do believe however that there are many people in marriages that one party doesn’t believe but doesn’t have the courage to say they will no longer be going to church. I feel lucky that I no longer have to deal with this problem.
@johnwebb. THANK YOU for sharing your information and experience. It is really encouraging to know how much integrity survives these kinds of human - organized meanness and madness. These trials are for "every man" together, and are necessary to the perfecting work of Christ in each of us, to the end of perfecting His Body entire.
Grief is a weird thing, I've been in the anger stage for a long time now, but I had a conversation with my uncle about him getting back active, and suddenly I've been launched into self doubt and sadness again. It would be wise for Nemo to prepare a written statement, addressing every possible cause for "excommunication" with his articulate response, and give each member of the council a copy of the written statement as the meeting begins so that they effectively have a RECORDING of Nemo's part in the council. Nemo can memorize the charges with his amazing mind and articulation and report the events and accusations afterwards.
It’s so gaslighty that they try to frame forcing you to sign an NDA as something to protect your privacy. If that was the case THEY would need to sign it, not you. You should take your own NDA for them to sign to actually protect your own privacy.

A number of American LDS missionaries were excommunicated in France in the 1960's. Some Elders and Sisters were living together in a "non celibate" situation. A General Authority came and interviewed Elders and Sisters and excommunicated a number on the spot.
I can see a huge difference between leaving the church because you want to vs being told by your church you are being removed. I think eventually Nemo may feel more comfortable with the excommunication as a “badge of honor”. The church isn't going to change. I found mantra meditation which benefited me more than the Mormon church ever did. I also began to no longer believe that feeling fear, anger, jealousy and pride were evil. For some strange reason I hoped that the church would eventually teach mantra meditation and teach that feelings are not evil. When I matured enough to realize the church was never going to change, I quit going to church and that was the best thing I could have ever done for me. I don't agree with everything Buddhists say, but a lot of Buddhist teachings resonate with me now. Bless you both. As a non-mormon, be true to yourselves and what you know to be true! The universe knows your truth. You are special.
Nemo is so modest.
Sorry to hear the church is taking this un-Christlike action Nemo.
What they don’t know is:
“If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine”
I’m a Brit and was excommunicated in 1980. Never looked back :-)
What you doing here if you never looked back.
Time to throw Nemo a big party!
The last question in my "Court of love" was: if the decision of the council is excommunication will you use this as means to antagonize the church in the future?
Yeah, it was not about me after all...
@KRMello.
So laughable, it leaves one beyond the curl of a lip.
Stupidity at its best will be stupefying to the observer.
As a teenager?! The LDS Church’s behavior is inexcusable! I hope you are doing well now. ❤
What could a teenager have possibly done that some teens aren't doing that isn't supposed to be done? Cough Cough
@@ElizabethTucker-w1iwhat???😮 oh I'm so sorry
@@lisagrace6471 the church was hardcore about punishment back then.
I find you very humble and honest. I am no longer a practicing member, but I do pray regularly to my Father In Heaven and I will keep your journey forward in my prayers. Honesty is always a good thing. Always.
Thank you both for being a Voice in the dark. You have been a big help for me as I transition out of the church.
"it wasnt a faith crisis, it was a trust crisis". BARS
That caught my attention too! It’s exactly what it is.
I know this episode is completely different than your recent episode with Hayden & Jackson Paul, but the vast difference in maturity levels between those two young adult males and Nemo (all roughly the same age, I believe) is striking.
Completely agree.
I had the same thought. Truly striking difference.
Mormonism is very infantile. When you go to Europe, most Christians have tackled with historical criticism, which the LDS faith hasn't (cf. "Deutero-Isaiah"). Thus, they are on the level of pre-1800 Europeans.
Hi Nemo, if you don’t mind hanging out with me and my friends, we’ll take you, and be your new community
Just be careful he doesn't go online and disparage your community of friends beliefs, personalities and teachings, whilst saying he is part of it..............he has a track record for that.
I love that John and Nemo took time during this episode to address the church massive S A problem, and it's defending of abusers and covering up cases. Thank you, guys!
The Greek translation of the word apostate originally meant: run away slave.. Fitting
interesting....... A very triggering word to me as it would be used on my LDS mission by fellow missionaries directed at missionaries.
This
Is not the meaning of the word apostate? And there is no connection whatsoever to slavery... I commented previously on this here
Also , thank you for showing me that i've been shadow banned... Someone at RUclips as denied me access to the reply button. Where as I went to this very comment to reply that he was wrong on the word apostate. And couldn't, somebody else could it, shows me that my reply button has been switched off.

Nemo the Mormon still applies. Mormonism is a culture, not one particular religion.
except it is a single religion. other people who act a certain way under the influence of other religions call out those religions.
Excommunication is such a weird thing for a group that is ALWAYS recruiting.
That's the reason why they're always recruiting
JWs call is "disfellowship" but it's the same thing as excommunication.
@@LisaFerguson-lw8il and yet they push members who care about their church? It seems like cutting off your nose to spite your face

Very odd.
Oh wow. So sad
Nemo, keep the name. The church claims they are not mormons!!!
Exactly. They are members of the Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints.
Adore Nemo for his research, honor, and scruples. And his personality is so fun. Best of Luck, Nemo. This is, indeed, a Badge of Honor.
Email sent! UK never-mo here. Can’t quite believe the Church doesn’t realise how bad it makes them look when they pull moves like this 🤦🏻♀️
Nemo, Your a hero. Without you we would not know what happens when you take the sustaining process to conclusion. God bless you.
Thatis horrendous
Keep confronting them Nemo, we need more People like you in the Church.

Definitely, the Fairview Temple disaster was the tipping point. I watched Nemo and I also watched the entire meeting that took place after Nemo was there.
I love you Nemo and John! I love watching you both and Mike on the LDS Discussion series! I am sorry the Morman church is excommunicating you Nemo! I am not Morman but I have learned so much about the Morman church, good and bad from you, John, Mike Gerardo and others!! Keep up what you are doing Nemo! You are awesome!

I am very thankful that Nemo is in our midst. Whatever the outcome don’t you give up!
Praying for you, Nemo!!!! You are true to yourself and I respect you so much!
Additionally, he has callings, and attends all his meetings. In what way is he not living by the church's principles? The one thing he hasn't done is sustain the brethren because he finds moral objections with the church's administration.
Criticizing a religion's behavior(especially your own) is not a sign of weakness, nor is it dishonest. You did make a very good "No True Scotsman" argument though. Congrats.
My faith journey is not yours. You can keep your unsolicited advice.

How did he keep it that quiet? Was he already inactive? Thus, no one thought anything of his not going to church? Prayers
@@whitajeman Prayers, you you've really peaked my interest

Nemo and your channel solidified my choice to leave the Mormon Cult
Nemo, you have a Pure Heart. A Heart After God & For Gods’ Truth.
I am so sorry Nemo. I left on my own and I do not see you regretting it. You have integrity!
Excommunication was used by Joseph Smith to retain power and punish his critics. The church still does it for the same exact reasons. A healthy organization does not need to kick out dissenting members because they are not threatened by them. If anything, they should double down on the doubting and struggling members. So sorry this is happening to you Nemo, they should be thanking you not trying to get rid of you 🙏🏻
Catholics do too
I can imagine situations where most organizations would need to remove someone. But holding the organization to its own claims shouldn't be it.

Frankly I don’t expect The

I really hope you are right! I feel that this so-called “church” controls its members with a hateful iron fist.
David Nolan was excommunicated about 18 months ago for writing and producing a musical play about the church and its ill gotten gains!
Thank you so much for bringing this to the forefront and standing with Nemo❤️
Memo’s Stake president is my best mate, he’s a wonderful person and is one of the most Christ like people I know. I’m sure this hasn’t come from him, he respects Nemo to the point where he won’t talk about anything that is going on with me.

He’s probably defended Nemo over the years.

@mormonstories I was just at an event in person with Elder Oaks, and I can guarantee you he is almost as feeble as President Nelson. I left wondering if he would go first. There have to be younger people behind the scenes, I'm so curious about who those people are.
A number of American LDS missionaries were excommunicated in France in the 1960's. Some Elders and Sisters were living together in a "non celibate" situation. A General Authority came and interviewed Elders and Sisters and excommunicated a number on the spot.
If it's the ones I'm thinking about, they were also polygamists and joined the LeBaron group.
I was disappointed my resignation was processed before I got excommunicated.
I can see a huge difference between leaving the church because you want to vs being told by your church you are being removed. I think eventually Nemo may feel more comfortable with the excommunication as a “badge of honor”. But yeah, I can completely see how it feels like you are being kicked out of your “family” for merely pointing out when they were being pants on fire, liars.
