Cruis’n Blast 💥 - Will N64 Cruis’n fans HATE or LOVE this Nintendo Switch Racer

- Cruis'n Blast is a 2017 Arcade game now available on Nintendo Switch in 2021. It is part of the Cruis'n series which includes Cruis'n USA, Cruis'n World and Cruis'n Exotica from the Nintendo 64.
So I'm taking a look at the game from the perspective of a fan of the Nintendo 64 Cruis'n series of games to try and answer the simple question, will you love it or hate it.
Fun Fact: Cruis'n on the Wii was never a Cruis'n game to begin with, it was the Fast and Furious arcade game they lost the license to.
Larry Bundy Jr, I'm a huge fan of yours.
@@davidanderson7643 you’re supposed to comment back to him saying “hello youuuuu” 😃
@@n64glennplant But...hello youuu
@@TheNewSoda there we go 😂
Cruis'n Blast on Switch is only half a Cruis'n game. The port was made by combining of the tracks from Cruis'n Blast and Super Bikes 3 into one game.
It’s actually one of the best games I’ve played all year - definitely had a whiff of Beetle Adventure Racing to it also as it’s pure chaos. It’s amazing.
Yeah there’s moments where entire races are absolutely crazy
I thought that N64 Beetle racing game felt more like Rush
Oh man, since that Track on Need for Speed 2 with the Tyranosaurus i loved such racing Games that do not take it to serious, missed such Games really over Decades.
This Game here seems perfect haha
yeah its like it knows its completely absurd I mean a hammerhead shark as a car hahaha
Eugene Jarvis is a genius and has made so many of my favorite games. I still regularly play Cruis'n USA, Smash TV and Robotron 2064
All amazing games aren’t they
I love how it plays almost identical (veichle handling & fast gameplay) to Burnout 3. 🔥
Lots of burnout vibes including the takedowns when racing
With FH 5, Cruis'n Blast and Hot Wheels, 2021 was stacked with racing games
I know right! Need to get hw on my series x still tho
I've actually been playing multiplayer with my buddy on a regular basis, we both played the N64 originals so this has been an honest blast to play.
The few gripes I have with the game however are mostly the inconsistent track length, things tend to blend in a bit too much, repeating tracks and lack of online. Other than those, it's a fun game!
yeah I know what you mean like some races can be incredibly short like 40 seconds and boom its over
@@n64glennplant always the third in each tour is short
The other 3 are full length (usually around 1:40)
I remember as a kid playing Cruis'n World & Exotica. I loved those games back then for the sheer ridiculousness of the courses & racing action. I might have to give Blast a try for that nostalgia!
This will be right up your street if you liked the original ones
I actually like seeing stock photos in thumbnails and it adds to the charm! Good work!
It’s also my wry sense of humour 😃
@@n64glennplant I love it :D
For once i believed it was your real face in the Thumbnail
@@vsarge8762 This one actually does look like him, doesn't it?
(At least from just seeing the small thumbnail.)
My fave Cruis'n is still World.
Be nice if they get around to putting the old games on the Switch.
A nice trilogy remaster would be 🔥!!!
Never played the Cruis'n games, was going to say I didn't play many racers on the N64, but having quickly looked at the comments, I remember I did! Apart from the obligatory DK Racing and Mario Kart, there was hours put into FzeroX, Pod Racer, an F1 game (can't think which one, or ones, off the top of my head), but World Driver Championship was my ultimate N64 racing fix.
That being said, this game does look fun and the driving style reminds me of my all time favourite console racer... Burnout: Takedown.
yes big burnout vibes with this!
Its a fun game that can be enjoyed with friends and in short spurts. It was nice to see an arcade port come home, like the good old days.
Yeah you don’t see that often now do you
I would love if you did more reviews like this! Ones where you look at modern games that feel like older titles like this one, Yooka Laylee, and Toree 3D!
Yeah I have more lined up, yooka laylee 1 was very disappointing for me though
Looks absolutely insane! I dislike drifting in games as the go fastest mechanic but I’ll just turn the difficulty down lol. No online play and lack of leaderboards will sadly kill this game off very quickly. What A glaring omission in this day and age!
They apparently said they’ll add it if the game sells well enough but I think that’s likely just lip service
I've been a fan of your channel for many years. I love how you talk about N64 games, and now that you are getting into video games from the current generation that are somehow linked to the N64 era, I think your channel is becoming greater.
Keep it up! Greetings from Mexico.
I appreciate that!
I loved this game right from the start. Played it for pretty much a week straight, going through the game on all the difficulty levels. But like you said, I haven't played it much since. It's still super fun though to pick up and roll through a few races, then put it back down for something else. Online play and leaderboards probably would have given this one greater longevity, but like the Cruis'n games on the Nintendo 64, I don't need to feel the urge to play it all the time. I'm sure I'll come back to it once every couple years just like I do with the N64 titles. Regarding the Wii game, Cruis'n Blast got me interested in the history of the series and all of their releases, including the Wii version. I picked up a copy of it and ended up having a ton of fun with it. Knowing now it's basically one of the Fast & the Furious arcade games that were also created by Raw Thrills and Eugene Jarvis, you can see the Cruis'n DNA and you can see how that series led to Cruis'n Blast. When you get used to the motion controls it actually feels quite smooth.
I bet you must have liked excite truck too right? I loved that, super addictive gameplay
@@n64glennplant Oh yeah, that game was super fun too.
I’ve still put more hours into Diddy Kong Racing than I have into any of the great, immersive, 4K racing games of today
hmm forza 4 was one which sapped a lot of time but yeah I was a sucker for sinking my life into DKR I could never resist it haha
I played about an hour and a half of DKR before getting extremely annoyed by the unfair difficulty and just went back to playing Sonic and Sega all stars racing and Cartoon Network Speedway
@@jabmaster1000 Hmm never heard anyone complain about the unfair difficulty in DKR except in respect to the WizPig boss race. Interesting!
So this is what taking three 5-hour energy shots together with a calorie-free Bang energy drink after a [___] clense looks like.
Coke, don’t forget the coke 😂
I felt I would like it after seeing it played on another channel, but this review confirms it. I love these kinds of racers.
Glad to hear it! let me know how you find it after you get hold of a copy
As for online, they said if it sells enough they might add it later. Along with extra cars or tracks.
now that would be interesting! I expect that this will sell well but id rather have waited and for them to put online in from the start
Cruis'n Exotic was a blast! I've played it on my modded wii few years ago and it took my heart.
Yeah that’s probably my fav too
There are actually 9 unique tracks in the game.
Nepal, Tanzania, Hong Kong, Hollywood are mixed with the 5 arcade originals in the tour mode
That right, they’ve promised more of the game sells well
They're actually not unique, they're just ripped from another Raw Thrills racer called Super Bikes 3
@@adamphillip5305 I got the track names from SB3.
They are still unique in the sense that you only see each track 2-3 times in the 6 tours, instead of just 1 track difference per tour if they kept just the 5 arcade originals, like Glenn suggested in the video
I was a big fan of the Cruis'N series on the N64 and the arcade. I definitely saw reason to pick this up when it released. It's so easy to pick up and play that my wife and I usually play this when we get some free time after our baby takes a nap.😆
Congratulations on the new born !
Now what we need is a rerelease/remaster of the RUSH N64 trilogy! The best arcade racing games... Probably ever!
I’d buy that
I would absolutely love a remake/imagining of all three original games akin to Blasts visual style. But I'd would also like them to include the original arcade versions as a fun bonus.
That’s money in the table for them whenever they decide to do it
Cruis'n USA. Best n64 arcade game and just about 5 years ago I got an N64 just to play Mario golf (among strong other arcade racers, another series I think was call top gear rally and one-off of V-Rally) Excellent job reviewing the game, by the way. Very interesting and comprehensive.
thanks Bryn im glad you enjoyed it
So far I've enjoyed Crusin Blast! Just some silly arcade fun lol And that catchy theme 🎶🏎️🔥 Awesome video as always & have a wonderful day! 🙌😁
Thank you - glad to see you’ve enjoyed this one too
@@n64glennplant Your very welcome!
Between arcade racers, Adventure Racing and Rush have always been my favourites. I'd love to see Adventure Racing make a return but this time with different cars instead of the one model.
I’d love for that to happen too
I love all the N64 Cruisin's, especially Exotica. Bought Blast for my family, and even more so for my own enjoyment... the game is so good!!!! So happy this made it to the Switch!!!!
Looks really fun & the dinosaur with the purple on it reminded me of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon.
Haha that’s such a funny game
@@n64glennplant Yes it was.
My favorite was Cruis'n World, but I did own the first 2 games on N64. My uncle has an actual Cruis'n Exotica arcade cabinet.
I've never played Cruis'n on the Wii, and I'm shocked that I haven't picked up Blast yet. I've been playing a lot of Dying Light and World War Z on the Switch lately.
Ww z was a game I played a ton of on my Xbox one x console, haven’t tried it on series x yet but they’ve added new scenarios to I might go back
Loved Cruisin' World! Great video! Probably going to pick this up! I'm fingers crossed they patch online in the future! Thanks for making this, I somehow missed this game! New subscriber here! Cheers!
Welcome! Yeah it’s worth getting, maybe wait for a price drop after Christmas as im sure it’ll be even cheaper soon
I had an absolute “blast” with this game. 😉 but in a all seriousness I can only hope the game has sold wel enough to warrant the developers to create more content for the game. I would love to see more tracks/cars added. Great video though, definitely a great game for long time fans on the Cruis’n series.
Let’s hope so too, naturally they’ll be coy about how well or bad it’s done
No pun intended
When I drove the tank the first I was really laughing myself
Funny isn’t it
Watching the video and seeing a helicopter racing i think "okay" then seeing a triceratops doing backflips, followed by a turbo boosting hammerhead shark "swimming" along the track!!?!
Special?? This game is batshit crazy!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
as someone else once comments on another video of mine "this looks crazier than Christmas at Jackie Chans house" haha
@@n64glennplant i can totally see why!!! *flashbacks to city hunter* I'll never look at chun li the same
best racing game at D&B whenever i go there, my other favorites are the AC&N64 ver's of WORLD
ive not seen the arcade cab of this aside from in photos but it looks amazing
My favorite racing games on the n64 were Rush, Rush 2, and Rush 2049
Great games, always felt they went head to head with Cruis’n
Looks like fun, but definitely not worth $40 to me as something I will pop into and play a race here and there - have it on my wishlist and when it drops to $20 or less I will definitely consider it. Would be interesting if we saw more Raw Thrills arcade ports to the Switch - maybe a future arcade compilation including Blast.
For me £35 here in the UK was a fair price I think. New switch games are like £40-50 here
I liked the video over and enjoy your content. I played this video on 2x speed because I felt you talked a little slow for me. Thanks for uploading.
No problem, I appreciate the fact I talk calmly and not at 100000 mph like most RUclipsrs 😂
The sheer level of absurdity in the environment of these race tracks reminds me of the OASIS Manhattan race scene from Ready Player One!
I am a big fan of the Cruis'n games and I absolutely enjoyed this one. Glenn hits the nail on the head when he points out that once you 100% the game, there's no reason to continue playing. I hope this game gets some DLC.
Apparently online multiplayer is now confirmed to be added
I love this game! It really needs online.
I know right that would have been amazing
I actually played this in the arcade I enjoyed it I definitely got to get the Home console version a try
It’s inferior to the arcade but still worth a play I think
We need a proper port/remaster of Cruis'n Exotica Arcade Version on every system, it was so amazing but never released on any console, and the N64 doesn't make any justice, i remember it ran in smooth 60fps and Hi Resolution the stages, cars and soundtrack were so amazing, i was so sad it never came to the Long Awaited Gamecube
can you imagine if they announced a remaster of the n64 trilogy of games - would sell ike crazy I think
Now, if only the Rush series would have a revival like this! The closest we’ve gotten to one is Horizon Chase.
I agree it seems primed for a revival
Fun gameplay worth it for 19.93 bucks and cents
Agreed!
It's kind of a gimmicky game because a lot of the time the only really important part of the race is the ending, but at the same time it is a lot of fun
That last 10 seconds on hard or extreme mode in every race is crazy intense and often a photo finish to see if you won
Oh nice, didn't think you were gonna review this one! I personally love what I've played of the game so far! Very fun, simple arcade racing, with the craziness/absurdity dial turned way up.
Last I checked about a week ago, it was still pretty hard to find a physical copy at the original retail price though :/ Def gonna pick it up eventually.
That’s interesting, I picked it up from Amazon uk for like £35 brand new and plenty of stock but I guess because it’s cheap for a newish switch game there will be loads of parents buying it for Xmas so maybe running low now
Yeah, just checked Amazon quickly, out of curiosity and it's $50+ USD rn in the States. Pretty sure the suggested retail was $35 or $40? Honestly, I'd probably pick it up at $40, but instinctively it feels like it should be a $30 game. When we all got Cruisin USA in our stockings on Christmas morning back in the day, it was because it was marketed to parents as a budget title.
I think Blast has kind of bubbled up as sleeper hit and they weren't anticipating so many sales in such a short time, which could account for the sense of scarcity.
At this price, I expect something like super mario maker. Make your own crazy tracks with dinosaurs and UFOs, could see that being a blast!
Cruis'n Universe!
I’m a bit mixed on this game. They advertised that it has 29 tracks when really it has about 10 that are straight up repeated or the layout is mixed around. There are no dev times to beat in the time trial mode and it feels really low budget. Also hate how only the last moment in a race matters.
At the same time I love how over the top and whacky it gets. The key hunting idea is good. The gameplay mechanics feel fun and smooth. I had a big smile on my face during certain moments. I just wish they had more money and time put into it. We could have got way more tracks and content.
I’ve been spoiled by Fast RMX on the Switch which has like 30 unique tracks, has way better graphics ( honestly probably one of the best looking Switch games) and just way more content in general. Just amazingly fast and smooth.Probably similar in budget too.
I'll have to look into that game! apparently the studio have said depending on sales they may add more tracks and online for this game so lets hope its sold like hotcakes!
From what I heard, it barley got in the UK top 40.
I love it.
I have a lot of fun playing this game and I hope Raw Thrills puts out more arcade games on the switch.
And more content to this game!
It looks exhilarating. A fun game is a fun game. I don’t care what era it’s from or how old the genre/game is. Just allow a convenient way to access, and my attention is met rather or not it’s my jam.
thats a good way to look at games, its really hard for a game to suck in my attention for long periods these days
This looks absolutely phenomenal. I picked up Horizon Chase Turbo, Hotshot Racing and Inertial Drift on the Switch precisely looking for that arcade feel that seems mostly lost on the racing genre nowdays. I'll put this one on my radar now.
Ah btw. I don't think the "RUclipsr reaction face" is necessary in your thumbnails. Your videos are already great and you don't need to fish for clicks with that. Cheers from Spain!
Ha it’s funny you say that, without getting technical every video gets 2 thumbnails and the one which gets the most reaction starts to be shown more so you’d fed the algorithm by clicking if that’s the thumbnail you saw 😄
All puns intended. I've been having a blast with this game. I hope the original trilogy end up hitting the n64 online at some point
Or a remastered trilogy!
@@n64glennplant I would 100% take a remastered trilogy!
I always played ridge racer or f zero x. Both are amazing so many memories of sitting in front of the CR tv on the Saturday afternoon. The sun trough the window on the screen which made it almost impossible to see what was going on and do not forget the scattered playmobil or legos trough the room.
what's your fav RR game? type 4 was mine, man I spent so long on that game
@@n64glennplant currently playing Type 4 on my PS Vita
I have both the N64 pal Crusis'n games and..yep i love this game too ^^
I expect many people will probably already have this if they are fans of the series - id have gotten it sooner if I didn't have such a backlog
Cruisin 64 fan here, I love the new game! i don't mind the no online play. i just think of it like any other game from my childhood that i enjoyed before online multi was even a concept.
thats a great way to see it!
Considering the local multi Switch co-op can't even run without being laggy & having cars teleport there's no way they could have done online multi-player & have it be a good experience. At least not without delaying the game for months to get it working.
Glenn if someone doesn't enjoy this game I'll fancy them a visit from the bloody Peaky Blinders!
I wouldn’t wish a visit from someone from Birmingham on anyone! 😂
Cruisn’ Blast rocks. Let’s Go Cruuuiisin’ !!
Now let’s go Cruis’n original trilogy remaster !!!
I need to pick this game up i always loved arcade racer
Should be right up your street then
I just got this game last week and still enjoy it very much and the family really loves the multiplayer mode as well. I had to hid Mario Kart 8 Deluxe away from them otherwise they wouldn't had give this one a try.
Come back and make another video buddy. We miss you!
Thank you - hope to soon. Bad health is the problem 👍
For me, a big part of the actraction of the Cruis'n -series is thst so much of the sky is on view.
By being relaxed & looking at the cloulds while racing & having suddently cars to crass that are not involved to actual competition, was one of the most exciting features.
I feel that Blast sort of lacks on those aspects.
Also, contrast is so high, that my eyes hurt, if i play this on nights.
There is one more thing to complain, and that is how short the tracks really are. So, when i played an Arcade-version, game was clearly inferior to California Speed Arcade -experience.
However those are ONLY complains i have to say about this.
-Everything else freaking awesome.
So great in fact, that i've tried to find this game on stores, but failed so far...
Yeah it’s like you’re downhill racing most of the time I get what you mean
They announced online and DLC are actually being worked on.
Yeah multiplayer online is live now too
For another "Will N64 fans HATE or LOVE this", SBK: Snowboard Kids for the Nintendo DS, the 3rd Snowboard kids game.
Everyone will hate that it’s awful ha
I am a Cruis'n fan, and I gotta say, I don't love it. But I also don't hate it.
Yeah, definitely a step down from previous entries. The thing is, Exotica was also a slight step down from what I consider the best of the series: World. They changed the format when they released Exotica (different company?). Not vastly different, but noticeable.
In Blast... the leveling up system is seriously lacking. You can max out a car in an hour... probably less. I don't get a real set of accomplishment gaining levels like I did in World. And you also have to pay for the upgrades after leveling? Not that big a deal, but just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
Clever cars, but not too much thought into them. And also lack of diversity with the locales.
Not their best work, but fun for a little while.
yeah I think had they tried selling this at a higher price point I would have had more of an issue but it was only like £35 here when I got it from amazon and I think maybe £30 will be a sweet spot for most people to feel satisfied with what they get
I know Cruisin USA isn't the best game but I am very nostalgic for it all the same.
Yeah me too, me too
This is actually my game of the year!!
It’s one of the most fun “new” games I’ve played this year for sure
I was hoping this review was coming.
Got around to it eventually 😃
Really enjoyed this entry in the series. I still think World is the best though!
It’s a very tough one to beat!
This game reminds me a lot Excite Truck from Wii
Loved excite truck!
Oh man, I loved Cruis'n USA on the N64 with its cheesy soundtrack but don't know if these kind of games would still be fun to play for me. Are you going to review Mario Party Superstars as well?
Yeah was supposed to do it on launch day but haven’t managed to get around to it yet
@@n64glennplant Nice! Can't wait to see it when it's done :)
Cruis'n USA meets F-Zero? Not gonna lie, game looks like a lot of fun. This is what video games are all about in my opinion, I love all of this wacky, bizarre stuff. Playing a very realistic game often puts me to sleep, games are about escapism and fantasy, not trying to re-live and imitate your day to day mundane life. Besides.......I secretly always wanted to race a hammerhead shark 😂
wait, you've lived all these years and you've never got to ride a hammerhead shark? your parents must be right gits haha
@@n64glennplant I once did in a dream 😂😂
I preordered this game and when I first played it, I wasn't too fond of it. I have all three Cruis'n games on the N64, and this has a different feel to it. However, as I played it more, I got used to it and now I find this game pretty enjoyable.
It's not as good as the N64 games, but it's still fun. Also, I know that I'm going against popular opinion here, but I really didn't like Cruis'n World that much. It's not bad, but I prefer Cruis'n Exotica. To be fair, Exotica was the first one I bought ($20 at Walmart a long time ago), so I've played it more than the others.
As far as N64 racers go, the one that I've found the most enjoyable overall is California Speed. It's relatively basic, and it also has the creepy billboard message in it, but it's a fun game, and I like it more than any other N64 racer that I've played.
Exotica was probably my fav too but yeah most people rave about world don’t they
They need to add the babes back.
Far too controversial for 2021 sadly 😂
My favorite games this year are F1 2021 (no assist, with a force feedback wheel) and Cruis’n Blast
I definitely spent more time with F1, but I had more fun with Cruis’n!
Not played f1 s2021 yet but watched a ton of streaks and I know I’d like it
@@n64glennplant it’s a cool game, I skipped 2020, as I was looking forward to next gen support.

Haven't played the Crusi'n games but now I've got a N64 copy of the first game a while ago...
Sad to say that I am not that good at the game but I hope I'll be able to win a race sooner or later.
They have a certain style of racing that once you click with you can win easily
That's a Hawk helicopter in a car racing game... take my money nintendo.
