I have fresh machined 1974 sbc block and heads. Bought felpro gasket set supposedly premium and the head gaskets are just steel shim stock (.015” thick). Inquired with felpro and they said to use a spray on sealant (such as the copper coated sealant). So that’s straight from felpro for the 7733SH1 steel head gaskets.

with the multi layer steel head gasket which this appears to be, you have to make sure the heads and block are as flat as possible. Otherwise you will be sorry as it will leak and overheat. Take a straight edge, measure the surfaces and half the tolerance of the OEM service manual provides for the factory composite head gasket.

Nop, not on a Toyota or Lexus.. the valve gasket must be on before first start. The book says do not warm and torque down the second time. The manual points out that working the head down once is sufficient. As a matter of fact most modern engines do not recommend twerking down the head a second time. That is why the MLS gasket disused. Working the head down the second time with an MLs gasket in place can in fact damage the MLS gasket.

    • @wisemonkey1551

coolant oil mixed inside the engine. That stop leak went in the engine probably seizing up the main bearings. Sorry but instead of adding a stop leak (it does not work with leaking head gasket), you needed to do an immediate engine head rebuild. Now probably a full rebuild or replace the engine with a known good one. I would verify first and then if seized, replace it.

The rule of thumb on this procedure is the following, remove the heads and clean them excessively. Clean the engine block top mating surface excessively covering holes so you do not get debris down in them. Place the MLS gasket on the head block. Then place the head back onto the engine block making sure it is Louisville. Place all the bolts in the hole and you may or may not choose to use assembly Lube on the head bolts. If you choose to use assembly Lube, you may need to add one extra ft lb of pressure. The assembly Lube can change a torque specification. After putting all other parts to include valve covers back in place securely so that they do not leak. Fill the engine block with oil has normal. Do not fully start the engine at this point! Next make sure the engine is full of a oil by checking the dipstick. Locate and remove the fuse that goes to the ignition computer. This will require doing research to make sure you unplug the correct fuse so that the engine cannot start you do not want the spark plugs to receive Spark. Attempt to start the car. But do not want it to start the point to let the engine Rev one or two complete start Cycles, what this means is pressing the button if it is a button start to allow it to attempt turning over once or twice if your car does not stop attempting to Stark press the button again so that it will stop. This is to circulate fresh oil through all of the parts of the engine because in most cases when you remove the heads it will drain oil from many locations that require oil when starting. One example would be Toyota engines that are the 2GR type. These type engines must have the lower oil pan and the timing chain cover removed before replacing the head gasket. You must ensure that you get plenty of oil circulating through the into block and all the way up to the valve cover so that it will feel the VVT mechanism. Replace the fuse he removed to keep the car from starting. As long as your engine block did not make any unusual noises while allowing the engine to turn over without starting then you are ready to proceed. After you've replaced the fuse now attempt starting the car for the first time. If the car starts successfully with nohad noises other than an occasional ticking sound because many of the lifters are now filling with oil. It should complete the process. You might like too loud the car to warm up for a full 30 minutes s so that you can check for leaks.
