This one almost got cancelled. The story was my friend Staszek had his Mac take a dump on him as soon as he was going to start editing last week. He still hasn't heard back from the repair shop so poor me had to spend 2 hours rushing to finish this video and I'm glad It's finally done. This video wraps up the Cajon Pass trilogy as I like to call it now. Expect a few more extra ones this month.

It's ironic that the two crew members who jumped out died but the engineer who stayed with the train was the only one that survived.
Weird
Driving I-5 through the Grapevine covers much of that same treacherous downhill terrain. Driving a heavy truck down that steep grade is no fun either.

Well, in some ways having lots of tons of steel around you like a cage is better than tumbling out at speed possibly into rocks, trees!
@@HobbyOrganist as the expression goes hindsight is always 20:20. Truth is no one knew exactly what would happen. The locomotive cab may not always be the safe place for train drivers in a crash. As an irish railway fan I always wonder would have been better to remove the pesticide from the train. May have avoided a fire thus making it more survivable. I don't understand why hazardous material is carried on trains like shown here . In ireland we used to have anhydrous ammonia tankers going to the IFI fertiliser plant in Shelton Abbey County Wicklow . They always had thier own trains.
"Can it get worse?"
If there is only one certainty in this word: It can ALWAYS get worse.
Well hello otter from 8 months ago well you’re right SHIT GETS WORSE
Tanall especially at cajon
Rule of thumb: Do not ask if anything can get worse. Things usually tend to get worse.
@@patricklee1633Another rule of thumb: an army will almost always appear if you say, “You and what army?”
Kinda ironic that the only guy who didnt jump was the only one who survived
True
Kinda ironic the place kept jinxing themselves.
But haw? So Lucky
The only explanation I have for that is the physics of the crash. The only hard impact he suffered was the locomotive slamming on it's side flush without the nose impaling itself into the ground and the velocity sent the GP60M sliding far enough to escape the center point of the crash (Hence why the 2 yellow-bonnet locomotives were destroyed) it's similar to the physics of the 1989 runaway that happened years prior only the cab of the leader of 7551 east was shredded making the engineer of that train suffer worse injuries than the engineer in this wreck. I've noticed in some crashes involving over speed that the engineer has a higher chance of survival when staying with his engines compared to that of normal derailments so long as the nose stays mostly intact.
@@Thunderbolt_1000_Siren a captain always goes down with his ship, as should engineers and conductors of a locomotive.
I was there in a big truck. That derailment and fire was something I'll never forget.

**laughs in ironic**
The driver survived because there's a much higher chance of surviving in the cab rather than bailing out.
@BNSFSantaFe603 true since you have the locomotive as a shield unless the locomotive gets on fire
Jumping out only really works at like 20-30 mph
that curve has taken out 4 trains from what i have read on wikiwand, so that pass is not only a hair pin curve but the downslope is probably too steep
GP type locomotives look weird as B units.
why?
Also if they have modern cabs
I think they look kinda cool

I wouldn't say it's the best. I do enjoy the effort of historical information and utilization of sources, makes it very accurate. But the animations and voiceovers just don't fit in well and don't do the effort of editing the video any justice at all.
It was named "Cajon Pass" because it takes real _cajones_ to take your train down it.
I’m actually spanish and I approve that joke as funny xD
WHAT?!
ya go down it, ya fill them *cajones*
@@juggernaughty8189 Lack cojones and fill the cajones. ( yeah, saw the misspelling when I posted, but figured people would know what I meant anyway )
Pathetic.
Just a quick correction on your video, (I'm currently an engineer for the BNSF), you showed the independent brake being used to plug the train. We use the automatic brake valve for that. (I'm sure it was just a simple oops in your production so it's ok haha)
As a result of these derailments, all heavy mountain grade subdivisions require a rear-end telemetry device which can engage the emergency brake from the rear for exactly this situation. You all may recognize this as the FRED at the rear, or flashing rear end device.

But even though a train hasn't runaway on the pass thx to positive train control along with braking systems to stop leaks I myself and dozens are wondering, have we seen the last runaway train? I'm praying we won't ever have another one in the future.
Just before dawn on February 1st, 1996 just before Valentine's Day, another Santa Fe Freight Train brakes failed, 4 locomotives and 45 cars derailed at the curve and explored into a fireball at 4:10 am in the middle of the 🌙, 2 crew members were killed and Engineer was injured the crash. In the end, 3853 and 4031 met faith under the scrapper's toruch. 157 a GP60 and 342 GP60B were saved still operates today for BNSF.

Thunderbolt, these videos amaze me. My grandparents used to live in Hesperia, and I went through Cajon pass a lot.
You might find this interesting also...in addition to having an ETD at the rear for emergency brake applications, we also have new rules about when we have to plug the train. If a train overspeeds by 5mph and the engineer can't regain control (on Cajon Pass), we are required to place the train into emergency both from the automatic brake AND the rear end telemetry device. I personally had this happen to me as a conductor. My engineer couldn't get the train under control and he panicked instead of plugging it, so i plugged it. Our train came to a verrrrry gradual stop right at the exact location of the derailment in this video. Right in front of the memorial. I walked the train, tying hand brakes along the way, and eventually found a partially closed angle cock which was the reason for our weak brakes. We spent 3 hours on the hill spinning every handbrake, then recharging the air brakes, then knocking off every hand brake. But the physical labor was an acceptable trade off for still being alive haha
I saw that explosion of that engine
If you go through Cajon, test TEST THE DAMM BRAKES!! WAY EARLIER AND CHECK EVERYTHING BEFORE
Better options:
If the route goes through Cajon Pass, call in sick

2:33 I like the sound effects when the train crashes. Good job!
Thanks. That's kind of a strong suit I have in these videos. I try and make the crashes sound as real as possible (Even if most of the time the sound effects are generic) and syncing certain effects to certain moments of the crash. That explosion sound was very difficult to sync but it fit so well. Even in some videos where it fades to a black screen, the sounds help you picture the crash in your mind giving you a terrifying image.

I also have two suggestions for documentary’s. The first one being the Tennessee pass runaway in 1989 (www.drgw.net/info/TP1989Wreck ) mostly because it’s the reason why the drgw got the gp60s and its also why drgw 5402 is now an sd40-2 and drgw 3108 is on kcs instead of Union Pacific . And the Tennessee pass runaway of 1994 ( www.drgw.net/info/TP1994Wreck )

Who's idea was it to build a railroad in cajon pass well whoever's idea it was it was a terrible idea
It's by far the best way to get from SoCal to the northeast.
There was another bad wreck in Cajon Pass on March 6, 1978, where a section of the new mainline washed out, due to heavy rainfall that winter, and the line relocation in 72 didn't figure for the runoff. So a wall of water came down that mountain and washed out the embankment the tracks were supported on. Two men were killed and two jumped, but had severe injuries. I notice that afterwards, both SP and Santa Fe built bridges across that area, figuring for future runoff.
8:14 that really gave me chills
That track is cursed
