  • PART 1 | May 12, 1989. Southern Pacific freight Train 7551, hauls 69 cars down the San Gabriel Mountains toward Los Angeles.
    It’s a familiar route to the crew, and the train men who work the mountains are well known as some of the best in the business. But as the train begins creeping down from the summit, the crew can’t control its speed. Smoke from melting brakes begins pouring out from under the cars. 7551 has become a runaway train.
    Do you know what caused the train to derail?
    From Season 3 Episode 9 "Runaway Train": Southern Pacific Freight Train 7551 derails and crashes into the residential community of San Bernardino. Seven homes are completely destroyed and four people lose their lives.

    Some people seem to complain about the fact that this isnt an air disaster, but the fact that these guys can make any disaster into a stunning documentary is pretty amazing.
    Sadly I don't think this spinoff lasted very long, as it also wasn't recieved well when this series was originally aired on TV.

      Train catches fire, you need the oxygen in air to even have fire. Therefor train was most likely inside air.

    • @101jir
      @101jir 2 года назад +5

      This was an actual spinoff? I didn't realize. NTSB (etc) investigations in general are pretty fascinating. Just when a "cause" has been found, you realize that's only one part of a much bigger chain of events to look at. And so much time and effort goes into finding just one aspect of the cause.
      Just a really helpful way to think about cause and effect in other aspects of life. We often find one or two things and forget to keep looking.

    Ah California the State I was born an raised. Wait 1989? Both devastation took place 1989?
    Man so this was in May of 1989 I was in second grade; but, come September, I was a 3rd grader.
    I lived through October 17, 1989 the Loma Prieta, Earthquake. I'm not kidding. It's also known as the World Series Quake.
    My mom had just gotten off the Double-Decker Cypress Freeway the 880 5 Minutes before it Collapse.
    We lived less than 5 minutes away from that same Freeway.
    My mom likened those days to Vietnam because of all the helicopter's flying overhead an by a week Mom could smell the bodies on the Freeway.
    I don't remember smelling those dead on the Freeway on the Air.
    I just hadn't realized what a busy Year that 1989 had been.
    I think the same Month this happening in San Bernadino, over in Sioux City, Fall's, South Dakota there was a an Airplane Crash.
    It was a DC-10 a part of the plane somehow fell off while in Flight and the result it crashed.
    NTSB an other investigator's didn't find the missing part that fell off until October same month of when the Earthquake occurred.
    I learned of the tragic plane crash through 30 Seconds from Disaster & Mayday Air Crash Investigation's.
    Oh an a Happy Time for me in 1989, twice Oakland A's won the World Series & the 49ers led by Joe Montana an Jerry Rice won The Super Bowl.

      Not quite. A derailment in itself is not an uncommon thing. Wheel comes off, but most or all cars are still upright. A derailment doesn't really carry across the severity. But "all over the ground" while Jargon means that the train itself has completely jumped off the tracks on a large scale.

    • @lilsuzq32
      @lilsuzq32 2 года назад

      Gee, google is helpful! From Wiki:
      "Clerks in Mojave had miscalculated the weight of the train, while the engineer and crew at the head end were unaware that one of the rear helper engines had inoperative dynamic brakes. Hence there was not enough dynamic braking force available to maintain control of train speed during the descent. When the helper engineer realized that the train speed was not being adequately controlled, he made an emergency brake application, which deactivated dynamic braking, resulting in a runaway condition. The train reached a speed of about 100 miles per hour (mph) before derailing on an elevated 35 mph curve next to Duffy Street, sending the head end locomotives and several cars off the high railroad bed and into houses on the street below, completely demolishing them.
      "Upon retrieving the locomotives' "black boxes" (event recorders) and the recorded data therein, it was discovered that the third head end locomotive's dynamic brakes were not functioning at all, although the sound of the cooling fans misled crews into believing dynamic braking was functional. It was also determined after the wreck that the engineer operating the helper locomotives knew of the faulty dynamic brakes on one of his units, but did not communicate that information to the head end crew. The combination of weight miscalculation, poor communication and faulty brake equipment resulted in a total train weight that was too great to adequately control on the downgrade. Once dynamic braking had been defeated by the helper engineer's emergency brake application the enormous weight of the heavily loaded cars caused rapid acceleration that could not be resisted solely by mechanical braking. The train catapulted from the 35 mph curve next to Duffy Street, scattering locomotives and cars..."

      Train was heavier then they thought and also some units did not have functioning dynamic brakes. Both factors created too much weight for the trip down grade.

    this from the video's description " Smoke from melting brakes begins pouring out from under the cars. 7551 has become a runaway train" brakes do not melt, if they did, they would be pretty useless. they get hot and lose their ability to create friction, but they do not melt. And what the heck is an aviation channel doing covering a train accident. trains don't even have cockpits.
