I don't really play AOE but if my experience as a league player has taught me anything it's that when you are not very good at the game yet, you can't think about strategy and play the game at the same time. Noobs just can't do these two things at the same time yet, their mouse actions aren't automatic yet and i think sometimes you don't realize this when casting these games. When managing your eco requires 100% of your attention it's kinda hard to think aboujt strategy lol.
Spot on. Especially when an emergency is about to roll in. When you're a new, bad or just very relaxed player, something like housing or that one random wolf attacking you will take your attention and you'll just neglect whatever else you were doing before. Same as in League, its really unpleasant to be bombarded by criticism simply because you didnt do something perfectly correct. Who cares about 50 food rotting away? A villager sitting in queue for 10 seconds longer than necessary? Your support getting a few minions? High elo is way too stressful and nitpicky in most games.
I've been playing AoE2 (in its various iterations) for roughly 20 years already, sometimes quite intensively, other times quite seldomly. Even so, I never bothered to learn to use keyboard shortcuts, never bothered to learn build orders, never bothered to implement metas and predefined strategies. This doesn't spoil the fun though, and I still end up playing quite entertaining online (and even offline) games. Besides what you very rightly said, what many people fail to grasp is the idea that quite a lot of players just play this game for the fun of it, and even though they have played perhaps thousands of games throughout their lifetime, they still didn't want to "improve" in ways pro players consider automatic and natural. In a quite similar fashion, many people enjoy playing football, basketball, tennis or whatever other sport on a regular basis without being desperate about becoming a better player, and simply for the fun of it. It's nice watching pro AoE2 players doing their things, much as it's nice watching pro football players doing their thing, but let's all understand that the vast majority of AoE2 players just want to have some fun playing a legendary game.
