I feel so emotional watching this. Viola said “What am I supposed to do with me? What am I supposed to do with my blackness, my deep voice, my wide nose? I have to believe that me, myself is a canvas in which I have to start my work…” That speaks to me so strongly. We have to see ourselves, in all of our uniqueness, as the canvas in which we have to work, and not force ourselves to conform to society’s idea of the what neutrality or standardization looks like. Art can be created from any starting point.

I was looking for this in the comments section because I didn't realize how technical Juliard could get. Juliard is basically America's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. But she's right, when you're soooo focused on the technical aspects and forget the person who's going to act those scenes, audiences will see right through it. It was so fun to see a "classically trained" actress actually giving us the tea of that school. What a refreshing take, instead of the usual "yes i went to a prestigious drama school" answer.

When Jennifer opened up about not always feeling articulate because of her lack of education, I love that she countered Viola's reassurance with "And you are very beautiful" because whilst Viola was talking, I felt saddened that she, an absolute legend, feels she does not belong in the business because she doesn't fit the shallow box. Viola is such an inspiration to me. I'm thoroughly enjoying this conversation. They are both extremely talented women!!

Wasn't planning on watching the whole thing in one sitting... but I couldn't stop. The time just flew by. Viola Davis is... everything. Her words, her strength, hear realness, wisdom, and firmness. Jennifer Lawrence was lovely, and it was refreshing to see her just taking Viola Davis in and, as a viewer, experience her as more than who she has presented herself in the past years in interviews (funny, goofy, relatable, light-hearted). She is growing and deepening herself as she has grown, as well as through her marriage and being a new mother... and it's beautiful to witness.

I think it’s so thought provoking that Viola is someone who hasn’t been deemed the ideal “beauty” from a societal perspective, & Jennifer has. Yet they have experienced similar traumas. It goes to show that superficial acceptance has no weight & can be detrimental whether you are on the “positive” or negative end of the spectrum. They both have so much depth. This was amazing.

I love so much how Viola complemented Jennifer in the very beginning. She made her feel comfortable. You can tell that meant a lot to Jen. Lawrence really is a fantastic actress and she has made such an impact on the industry. I agree with Viola, they are a similar type of actress. They both bring insane life and it’s hard to find an such deep actors brings so much of themselves to their roles, and I have so much respect for these women. Fax I feel bad for her and some actors that go through all that hate from the internet like they're not just normal people too, people oughta learn to keep their negativity to themselves real sht. I absolutely loved listening to Viola Davis, especially on how the process on set matters more than the business side of their industry. You can tell she's so passionate about what she does. So inspiring.
I loved her in The Woman King, she's excellent for the role, a hard bitten General who has seen her fellow soldiers, who she trained and lead for years, die at her side. And then recruited more warriors, for the good of the country.

Tears came up for me as Viola talked about the pencil in the mouth and the holding of her rib cage to make sure her breathing was proper and then the progression into her features and the HER of it all and who she is and was in the face studying and performing Eurocentric work #whitecharacters

This was such a great talk, I cried through a lot of it. Viola saying that she doesn’t have the draw to get people to see her movie (she said it way better) is baffling to me. Viola Davis being in something is a stand alone reason I’d watch something. I love both actresses so much. I always have enjoyed Jennifer’s interviews she’s just very funny and seems real not just doing a talking point.
What Viola Davis said about the 'prostitute' concept is so incredibly true. That's why I hope she gets the strength to write and direct her own movies. The upsetting thing about the capitalization on beauty & 'the look' in Hollywood is how that can take the soul away from artistry in many ways. It has held women back a lot in terms of allowing three dimensions to be shown, and allowing the good bad and the ugly to be expressed. Movies can change people's mindsets and I can't wait to see more roles where women are able to express everything that they are, even when they aren't physically appealing in a role. It doesn't have to be as drastic as 'Monster'. It just has to show the truth which is so rarely expressed in full - but Viola very well must be aware of the impact she's made on that very thing. The way she cried in Fences proves that. That scene was a revolutionary moment for women actors. Jennifer Aniston actually did that in 'Cake' and it changed how I saw her as an actress but in interviews people just questioned why she didn't look perfect in the role. We need to celebrate when female actors choose to take on roles that express their full humanity more. It will change a lot for us.
These two can play the most diverse and dynamic characters. Two of my favorites

I don't care how people misinterpret anything Jennifer Lawerence says in an interview. She is a phenomenal actress. The variation in her characters and the stories she tells is a deep and wide chasm. Viola Davis is such a calming force and is so talented, articulate. The characters she portrays are grounded. There is always just a deeper story than the one you think you are watching. The skill that it takes to empathize with a character or a story. The depth of understanding, the psychology behind the thought process, as a person standing outside looking in you can't grasp it. But they do...they take months, sometimes years to understand a character and to tell their story and give it justice. But we just look at the finished product and judge. As an audience member, I appreciate what they do and what they give...

Viola Davis is just from another planet or I don't know, but how could a human be this respectful, wise, chill, real? No bullshitting, just being kind and smart.

And Jennifer...so happy that she talked about her anxiety experience, it's so refreshing to hear about real life experiences, how could the press not appreciate it and turn it to something comical?
I feel bad that this video is remembered for one part Jennifer said, when later in this interview she said she knows she often gets torn apart for things she doesn't say right in the moment. A lot of people coming to this interview in bad faith instead of listening to the actual conversation they had.
I believe her on the part that she doesn't mean that way. But Viola Davis confirmed it right after without a doubt, and even if you are bad at interviews you can think before you talk. That's no excuse for spreading wrong information. At best she is terrible at wording her opinion.

Two of my favorite actresses having such an honest, open, and considerate conversation makes me love them even more. They're both creating such a safe space for expressing their pains or struggles. Didn't expect to watch the whole thing but they definitely sucked me in!
I could listen to Viola speaking for hours and hours nonstop… such a wise, amazing, beautiful human being. Also loved to see Jennifer and specially her vulnerability in this, you could see it was therapeutical to her
It's the reaffirming of both of their insecurities for me. One says you're highly articulate and the other says you're very beautiful. It's amazing to watch, just beautiful.
Its also how women shade each other, "youre highly articulate" means for a black person, it also means youre not attractive enough for that compliment. Saying "Youre very beautiful" to an actress undermines her talent.

Having watched the whole interview I find it really odd that the comment section is so focused on one section of the interview where Jennifer made a wrong statement when the full conversation is so enriching and full of life. These two women were vulnerable, kind, showed a deep interest in one another, listened to one another and even shared such profound truths. It’s a great conversation, we’re too obsessed with catching people out and ‘gotcha’ moments that we lose out on the really good stuff.

I’m so glad you pointed this out. Viola articulated so many profound truths about being a working artist, like when she asked Jennifer about how she makes people feel “less alone” with her performances, but here we are; focusing on an out of touch statement that was probably just an understandable miscommunication. This conversation is one worth listening to from start to finish.

Viola Davis amazingly inspiring as always. She is just deep seated without forcing it. Jennifer Lawrence smarter than anyone would think immensely genuine and funny. She was just taking all in from Viola while dropping some gems from time to time…and it was great to watch this duo talking !!
The best and most interesting part of this interview is when Viola and Jennifer both shared insecurities (beauty and intellect) with one another and comforted one another. These two seemingly opposite actresses were able to connect with each other in that moment. I'm sad to see this comment section has dissolved into a bandwagon of people mocking Jennifer for saying something that i doubt she meant to come across in the way that it did.

Just comes across as insecure desperation. So well done, you caught her out. Just as well she didn't respond "You too" to a waiter saying "Enjoy your food" or you'd have roasted her alive.
Viola mentions how society and the industry sees her as “non classically beautiful” and Lawrence did the EXACT thing Charlize Theron did in an interview with Viola 10 years ago. She immediately tells her how she thinks she is beautiful and to “not listen to them” as if she’s talking to an insecure teen 😅. At least this time, Davis explained that she was speaking from an observational viewpoint.

Jennifer and Charlize are clearly too arrogant to even realise the point that Viola was making. It's almost hilarious.
I'm sure Jennifer's intentions were good! When someone seems to put themselves down we all have the urge to try to build them up. Viola did a great job of bringing it back up in conversation and clarifying that it isnt as simple as recognising your own beauty, but educated her on the trauma and mental battle she struggles with. The conversation was an exchange of lessons and perspectives. It's a positive thing!
Oh my god, this was amazing! Viola is such a great teacher and they both were so completely open about, what it means to be an actor, what it means to not being mentally completely healthy, what it's like to be a mom and much more. Not only did I learn a lot here, I also feel very much not alone. Thank you so much to both of these great women and everyone involved!
this is probably my favourite actors on actors video. I love how they both really listen to each other and all the deep stuff they talk about. those types of videos are my favourite because you really get to see how much of a real human being they because they don't hold and tell it like it is.

When Jennifer Lawrence went from being a one-off character in Hercules in the 90s, to starring in the lead role as Xena the Warrior Princess, it changed acting forever. What an inspiration.

Jennifer really is a beautiful person trying to live her best true life while entertaining us and let’s see them for who they are,people who have a job and trying to live their own lives. My goodness I just want to cry in the best way possible. Viola Davis, so vulnerable , so astoundingly intelligent, I mean every word that came out of her mouth was so seasoned with depth and class. And Jennifer, she’s always been one of my favorites, and I loved seeing this side of her, and her generosity of being vulnerable in this interview, just, wonderful. I watched every bit of this video.
