- "Wassail" is an ancient toast meaning something like "Good health!" and also a mulled cider that was drunk as part of "wassailing" festivities, typically on the Twelfth Night of Christmas. The practice of wassailing is old and exists as a folk tradition in many parts of the United Kingdom, even today. We present here Ralph Vaughan Williams' 1913 joyful setting of the "Gloucestershire Wassail," perhaps the most famous of all the local wassail traditions. The performance was part of "Carols for Quire 5," at Trinity Cathedral, Cleveland, OH, December 20-22, 2013.
1. Wassail, wassail, all over the town, our bread it is white and our ale it is brown;
our bowl it is made of the green maple tree; in the wassail bowl we’ll drink unto thee. Wassail.
2. Here’s a health to the ox and to his right eye, pray God send our master a good christmas pie, a good Christmas pie as e’er I did see. In the wassail bowl we’ll drink unto thee. Wassail.
3. Here’s a health to the ox and to his right horn pray God send our master a good crop of corn, a good crop of corn as e’er I did see. In the wassail bowl we’ll drink unto thee. Wassail, wassail.
4. Here’s a health to the ox and to his long tail, pray God send our master a good cask of ale,
a good cask of ale as e’er I did see. In the wassail bowl we’ll drink unto thee.
5. Come butler come fill us a bowl of the best; then I pray that your soul in heaven may rest;
but if you do bring us a bowl of the small, may the Devil take butler, bowl and all!
6. Then here’s to the maid in the lily white smock, who tripp’d to the door and slipp’d back the lock; who tripp’d to the door and pull’d back the pin, for to let these jolly wassailers walk in.

We sang this in high school madrigal choir. Such classic holiday cheer and joy! Here’s to the wassailing bowl
Holy smokes!! How is it I’m just discovering this song now?!?! This gives me such a strong Dickensian Christmas feeling. Love it!!
It’s May. I woke up with this song in my head??? So yeah, listening to it now. 😁
I've had this as an earworm all day, visiting my mother at the hospital. I fell in love with this arrangement when it was part of a Christmas Revels performance in Oakland a few years ago.
Wassail is from old english "wes hale" and means be of good health, i.e. hale and hearty.
So nice to hear this version its not often heard.
Blur introduced me to this. Their version is quite cool

Old Norse!
Wonderful music! My father, as a boy and young man, used to correspond with Vaughan Williams who was always very encouraging about my father's musical endeavours. Happy Twelfth Night, everyone :)
I love this arrangement so much! It's very difficult... Great performance!
I did this arrangement as a bass in the Chamber Chorale at Washington High School, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1973. It was a fun song to do! Yes it's hard, but the effort was very rewarding! :)
Who was the choir director then? The conductor of the choirs I sing in used to teach at that school, but it may have been later than that. (We actually just performed at Washington High School last March!)
Chuck Ashford was the director the first year I was in the Chorale, 1973. Rich Hoffman took the choir from 1973 until after I graduated in 1974. Great days! I'm glad to have lived them! :)
@@oldfart269 I did this (the whole set, in fact) in HS about twenty years later. It was hard, but so much fun.
My very favorite rendition! Thank you for posting.
I sang this in high school over 25 years ago. I annually send this video to our choir director.
Same here! (Not the "sending to the choir director" part, but the singing in h.s.)
Same here! The bass part was a very fun part
Same. Our school used to put on a madrigal dinner
Exquisite arrangement. Kudos Vaughn Williams.
A lovely performance of a beautiful song! :)
So beautiful…thank you🌟🕊🙏❄️
a masterful rendition of this great piece-- thanks for posting!!
This is a piece of music that works well in the acoustics of a stone church/cathedral. Thank you for posting. One of my favorite Christmas pieces done very well.
Mine too
I have favorited this video for a reason. It’s beautiful!
What an excellent rendition!
Beautifully done
I have sang that exact arrangement in college. Such a good piece
ooo I love this arrangement!
Outstanding really very very good. Well done
That bass run at 1:42.This may be the cleanest group of American chamber male voices I've ever heard.
This is helpful for a musical composition that I'm currently working on. Thank you very much.
Excellent performance.
Hoo boy...what fun. Lovely singing.
Very nice performance of a challenging RVW piece!
A fine performance. It's harder than it looks...
Ah, but therein lies the fun and the satisfaction! Our high school concert choir performed this arrangement for Christmas '71. I still remember the soprano part perfectly, despite this being the first time I've heard it since then.
we had a annual tradition to where alumni would return and sing this and the hallelujah Chorus. I too recall my2nd alto part. Great songs.
Wassail!
Fantastic to see our great traditions being protected and preserved.
mustve been for the hundredth anniversary of the composition of this piece!
V Williams composed this particular arrangement -- but the Gloucestershire Wassail goes back to Medieval times
What man's heart doth not skip a beat at the sight of her gathered waste and the lovely flare of her hips. And oh my the soaring sweetness of her voice can be heard above all of the others!
Inspired to find this from Mayo and Kermode film radio programme. Tinkity Tonk and down with the nazis etc!!!
This is glorious! I'd really appreciate the song lyrics being shown.

It would be lovely to read the lyrics! 😮🌟🕊
Wish I could have made out the words.
The lyrics have now been added to the description.

The tenors killed it
@@sooperheep I don't think he was ever implying that they killed anybody...
A great shame that the dynamics have not been observed - it should give the impression that the wassailers are approaching from a distance and then fade away as they leave.

So good it could have been an English choir...
Well, a damn sight better than most English choirs, and I speak as an Englishman! Tremendous life in this performance. I love how they disappear down the lane at the end!
@@arthurdent7509 Why would they disappear down the lane? they want to be invited in to have the bowl filled.
Much much better than most English choirs! I speak as a member of the London Bach Choir about to perform this at a Gala in the City... This is an excellent crisp performance with perfect timing. The Americans are extremely disciplined with their singing. It is a technically perfect performance. Bravo Cleveland..
