- This is my scratch built U505 Submarine that I have been trying to make operational for some time. Its not designed to submerge when static but I came very close. This has been an ongoing experiment for some years and I believe I have overcome many problems.

Hi Tim, I started this scratch build 10 years ago and finally got it working quite well. It was only running on one motor when it went under and hit the pool wall. If I had used both motors it would have been a lot faster and probably got damaged. Cheers, Paul.👍👍🙏

Hey, Paul. I know you felt it was a partial success, but from where it was and the work you've done... this is an awesome go. It is a wonderful model and to see it running in your pool is fantastic. I love the cap, too! This is great to see!
Hi Anthony, This has been a long experiment in getting the ballast pumps,valves, electronics etc to finally work well. After all the failures I am happy with the end results. I will add some more weight to the bow section, this should make it dive earlier when running. It weighs approx 25 kg so takes some stopping. I only ran it on one motor as its too powerfull on both motors.
The Cap came from my visit to see the U17 in Speyer back in May this year.

Hi Robert, I am happy you finally saw my Submarine finally working reasonably well. It needs a lot of room to overcome the positive boyancy but at least it went under albeit with a thump against the pool. A trip to a lake would be good but it must be shallow.😂

Brilliant effort Paul. Now it is time to commence mass marketing. They will sell like hot cakes. You might want to partner with a Chinese manufacturer though. Good on you for sticking with it, it's very satisfying to see a positive outcome. Steven.
Hi Steven, There are a number of manufacterers who make cylindrical removable diving systems take a look at "The RC Sub Guy" on RUclips he is the real expert in Sub modelling.
My plan was to try and make my Sub operate like the older prototypical Subs actually dived and surfaced using ballast tanks,pumps,valves etc. I started building mine from scratch 10 years ago and have had many problems to overcome. I think I have finally solved all the issues ,just some extra gramms of weight on the bow and its done. I was very happy to see it dive allthough it hit the end of the pool a bit hard. It weighs approx 25kg so takes some stopping, it was only running on one motor at the time, its good I didnt run both motors.

Hi Erik, it works the same as the older prototypical Subs.
The ballast tanks are open at the bottom with valves at the top closed. When the valves are opened the water enters the tanks and the Sub submerges. To surface the valves are closed and air is pumped into the tanks at the top pushing the water out. Its been a labour of love getting everything working but finally it seems to be ok.

@@railway187 Hi Erik, The air supply in my U Boat comes through the periscope when its on the surface. Because its normally driven under water the positive boyancy is enough to bring it back up after submerging. The problem is when its submerged if the pumps are turned on water can get inside the sealed compartment. On the real Subs air is stored in air tanks for surfacing and trimming. I wish I had that system.

You may be getting air trapped under the deck. Is it a dynamic diver? With decks awash like that it would dive dynamically quite well.
Hi, I have vents under some of the deck grating that allows are to escape. I incorporated them some time ago as some air was bring trapped. Its designed with positive boyancy so should be driven under water as in the video. Its a delicate balancing act to try and do static dives again as shown in the video. @@paulvozman842 I have an Eden (Later Sheerline) Akula submarine. I always only ever filled the ballast tank so that the top of the conning tower just broke surface. I used the forward planes to dive and maintain depth, with an automatic leveller on the rear planes. It could sail around at a constant depth hands free. If I lost sight of it (old eyes) I could switch off the transmitter and a lost signal detector would blow the ballast tank. With a little positive buoyancy, it managed to negate any tiny leaks. Your project looks ace for a scratch build. Well done!
@@akula9713 I follow the "RC Subguy" Nautilus Drydocks on RUclips who has some amazing Subs and dive systems using the cylinder types. These are very controllable but as mine has front and rear ballast tanks and a seperate water tight compartment for the electronics I dont have the ability for such fine depth keeping.
Its taken me 10 years from starting the build from photos to getting it almost working. It weighs 25klg empty is 1.35m long, 12cm wide and 20cm high.

@@paulvozman842 The Eden boat just had a large central tank. It used a windscreen washer pump to pump water in, via a pinch valve. The pumped in water would compress the air inside the tank. The pinch valve was just a servo cam pushing a spring loaded rod through a block of plastic onto a ball bearing that sat on the inlet water tube. The operation would go like this.
Dive servo neutral position..pinch valve closed
Dive servo to the right…..pinch valve opened, microswitch activates pump, ballast tank fills, compressing air inside.
Dive servo neutral position ..pinch valve closed, microswitch deactivated. Water can’t get out of the tank.
Dive servo to the left pinch valve opened, compressed air in tank pushes out water, boat surfaces.
It’s been my most reliable boat so far. A very simple system.
