During a massive dump of snow in Northern Vancouver Island, I decide to head into the misty mountains on a quest for spectacular light. At first, my expectations are dashed but when I finally give up all hope, something magical happens.
In spite of suffering a hard fall on some icy river rock in the first 5 minutes of my adventure, I still show you my entire drill for shooting super sharp telephoto landscapes like a pro.
I also share with you the 5 things I wish I'd known before becoming a landscape photographer. They might not be what you expect.
What on earth is Amanda pouring down here gullet and what is that bizarre noise? What's happening with my book deliveries and does coastal BC really have a clone of Spirit Island?
There's only one way to find out. Hit play and then hit like!

Your tolerance for standing in wet feet and jeans is a top-level skill.
Stalagmites vs stalactites: an easy way to remember is the 'c' in stalactites is for 'ceiling' as in they drop down from the ceiling, and the 'g' in stalagmites is for 'ground' as in they rise up from the ground.
Or another way is stalactites have to hold on tite to keep from falling.
@@taklebury And stalagmites might eventually grow enough to reach the ceiling.
'mites' grow up, 'tites' come down
@@drewarmstrong4325 this is true however the profile will stay largely the same wide at the base and skinnier at the top.
Amanda eating pop rocks is my spirit animal
Absolutely love the dry humour on this channel. Cracks me up. Subbed ofc
One of the reasons I have subscribed, his personality is great! Love it
A 40 min Fototripper video? Damn I need to switch from coffee to beer!
bring snacks!
I bought a marathon bar!
@@MichaelShainblum This is so meta. Just beware of peanuts.
@@MichaelShainblum bwhahahahahahah
Years ago I was painting a house and the owner came out to chat with us while we had lunch and I took out a Mars bar for dessert and the home owner told me a story about when he was in a bomber (he a gunner) over Europe making the run back to England during WWII he recalled pulling a Mars bar from his kit; his hands were so cold he had difficulty getting it unwrapped, and it so near frozen that he essentially sucked on it like a popsicle. "Best thing he'd ever eat," he said. The way you cuddled with that Mars bar reminded me of that story. Another great photography video and also, as usual, some of the best entertainment on RUclips. Thanks.
I bet they tasted way better back then.
@@fototripper LOL
was in the Army and embraced the suck in the field and deployments. then i found nature/wildlife/landscape photograhy years later to help cope with ptsd.....and embracing the suck in photography is well worth it. thanks gavin for the inspiration.
Well said.
Just another amazing video Gav, right from Amanda's Pop Rocks, to the stunning last image of the snow capped mountain licked by beautiful light. You are truly an amazing photographer, and you show us all how you should never give up for that perfect capture. Well done my friend, well done 👍
What a perfect way to start a Monday. 40 min of fun. Actually Muck Boots are quite cool and trendy. Fits well and you can have them in both warm or light versions.
That 40. Minutes breezed by like it was 5 minutes , pure class and entertainment
I didn't notice it was that long. It really is a great production.
"Chasing Awe" just arrived and it is "brilliant!" Uncle Grumpy's Forward was nice to read. You are one of the few Photographers who gives the location of your shoot, and I appreciate that very much. Thanks Mike
Seriously jealous! Still waiting for mine. 📭
Thanks Michael. Only when a location is already well rinsed. If it's not yet been ruined, I keep it quiet ;)
I have binged your videos over the last few weeks. I probably have watched 2-3 dozen or so. You are hilarious and your work is stunning. There is a guy named nico leonard who does high-end watch reviews and he has a sense of humor that is lacking in the watch community. I feel like your humor is in the same mold and is a breath of fresh air in the photography community. Your images have rekindled my photography passion and led to a gfx 100s purchase. Now I have to go out and explore more! Thank you
Mites go up, tights come down :)
Thanks for making my Sunday mornings better ! 😉
Oh yes Gavin. They definitely lick the bag. (Oh and this is a stonking vid. Love it).
ARE YOU SH*TTING ME!! That's effing AWESOME!! Thanks, bro!!
heheheh you're welcome John. Now prepare to be the object of jealousy from hundreds of thousands of people!
@@fototripper I KNEW there was a catch! LOL
Is your ebay listing up yet John??? (Congrats!)
@@jennifercrouse thanks!
@@CraigNiesenPhotography thanks!
The lengths you go to to entertain me is amazing. I am not standing in that river for you. Ever, just making that clear Gavin.
That moon image was incredible! I thought I was watching a Peter Lik “masterclass”. 🌕😎 🌕
Then I'll watch the video again for the algorithm....(and the Pop Rocks) 😂
Thanks mate!
@@fototripper I think I'll do the same, this video is very instructive about side B of beeing a Landscape phtographer!
You guys crack me up when am feeling down love your contact really inspired me and influence me as a landscape photographer
I’m currently playing catch up and have got this far so far. Chasing Awe has just been ordered to help me with some inspiration. Like you, I’m also an escapee of the old country and now live in the Middle of Nowhere, Canada. I’m happier behind the camera, shooting dogs or landscapes as I’ve got a face like an angry beaver after being run over and it tends to scare small children and granny’s.
Fantastic vlog and a great story of endurance, perseverance and good old fashioned honesty. Loved it. The final image ain't three bad either. J
Is this a dream or is it a fantasy. I must of dreamt it, guess I’d better watch it again to be sure. 🥸👍
Good idea ;)
I'm so happy that the day finally delivered some beautiful images for you! No one likes getting skunked when putting so much effort into getting there...but it's even more pressure when you feel like you need to please an audience as well. Of course, just being out in nature can be reward enough. As always, I appreciate all of the effort you put into these videos!
I love your optimism. Go on this way, it's one of the reasons to finally get the shot you had in mind.
just brilliant. when you said 'plop', it took me back (a long time) to primary school whilst I hooted with laughter.
but 'I'm going to' was just magnifique. She's a true keeper with that comedic attitude!
another excellent and polished video, thanks!
There you go, maximum satisfaction!
I appreciate the time and effort that went into making this! Up there as one of your best yet 👏
Theres also something really special about being the only one who sees that fleeting moment in time...
Stunning !! Thanks Gavin :)
Awesome video, magnifique shots, great humour and finished with Amanda licking your bag. Perfect day!
23:58 I love the fact you went through unbroken snow to get up to your camera. I love that attention to detail in your videos. Its a small one most people probably don't notice, but fantastic detail.
Oh my! Those shots towards the end are magical!
As another post has said. Made my Sunday even better Gavin. Talent and making folks smile (laugh over here in this house). We both really appreciate you and Amanda. Thank you! ~Mike, Montana
Fantastic video as always mate! You deserve far more subscribers! ✌🏻
Worth waiting for. I enjoyed that.
Another great vlog and stunning images and sound. Love it. 👍🙂
Another terrific video! Your videography, humor, tutorials and of course your significant other makes these RUclips videos a must see event!! Keep up the fantastic job!!
I just love these videos. We learn so much about the process involved. Thank you so much.
What an effort. I can run and hike a long time but how you ignore rivers is very astonishing to me. Very happy to see you getting that well deserved superlight
Absolutely awesome Gavin. Always there is some hope to get the best out of everything.
Gavin, this is a great video, the landscape is so beautiful and the way you present your search for the right image is both educational and entertaining at the same time. I'm really fond of your videos as I have a good time watching them and learning from all the reasoning you apply into your images and to these situations we've all come to face when going out to photograph landscapes. This is a great amount of work you go through to put these videos together. You should indeed have more subscribers, but anyways, at least count on my loyal following of your work. please keep it up!
Brilliant video. I really appreciate the effort that you put into these, both the serious and funny. Great photos, makes me wish I lived near those places!
Stalactite vs stalagmite - easy to remember. Stalagmite has letter "g" like "ground" so the are on a ground (formed on a floor of a cave). So stalactite is the other one - hanging from cave's ceiling - note stalactite has letter "c" like ceiling. Simple and easy to remember :-)
Stalactites hang tight.
Absolutely LOVED this video!
Such a great episode. Thank you!!
When you talk about expectations, there is no such thing as over or under expecting something. If you were able to expect everything, why go out looking for anything. You could sit in the backyard take a couple of photos based on what you can see from there and hope they sell. You have some great class on getting out there and going over the top to see what you can get. I enjoy your videos a great deal, and it has been a pleasure to watch. Keep up the great efforts and the fun that goes along with it. My best to Amanda, who seems to be the best foil that you could ever expect, and her willingness to go along for the ride !
There are not many people I would dedicate 40 minutes to on RUclips but you’re certainly one of them. Great vlog! 👍
Whoa-ho-ho! Just got your book...super epic. Nice job brother, looks amazing. Images look even better in print than they do online. Outstanding!
Thoroughly enjoyable Gavin. Classic Fototripper vlog, in the style of a couple of years ago. Nice balance between photography and chuckles and a nice pace, to the point were the video flowed so well that I didn't even think about the length of the vlog, even after initially seeing the total length before watching. Its true what you say...the photography frustration is pretty high in the UK at the minute with the covid lockdown. Keep safe and well. S.
Lots of humor, lots of details: Classic Fototripper!
Great video once again :)
Just love the last image with the glow and mist.. Perfect ! :)
I absolutely love your work and videos. Keep it up man
Pop Rocks, frozen feet, and some atmospheric conditions! what more could you ask for. Great video as always!
Great Gavin! That shot that reminded you of Spirt Island was wonderful and of course that last image was awesome. Fantastic conditions there!
I love a full location vlog like this.well done Gav
love your videos. The funniest and most unique photography channel on youtube.
The plane bit had me laughing good! How I am when shooting MW haha; your sense of humor is great, the coffee sponsorship, etc (love it).
Your videos are the perfect balance of jokes, vlogs, and photo/photo advice.
Thank you. Every chance I get, I go out. As I work 8/6 I try to make the best of the times I can. However, watching videos of people just getting mint shots after mint shots on youtube kills me me and makes me question "Am I any good" it's good to see the failure of people you watch. Helps me understand, that "it's not just me". Thank you for sharing this one.
Absolutely gorgeous image...so happy your perseverance paid off!
Brilliant Gavin, loved the humour plus fantastic final image. Patience does really pay off! 📸🍫🏔️🙂
Superb bud. First time I've seen one of your videos, informative and very funny. Good job.
Those final shots gave me chills Gavin, just awesome!
Your winter photos are my favorite. So so spectacular!
I love that kind of light too, great shots!
So glad for you that you got that banger shoot in the end =) what a great episode.
I just reached the point where you say "How did you film this clip without getting any footprints on the trail." As I watched - this is exactly what I was wondering. My quick conclusions were a drone possibly or there is another way around - you set up your camera, walk back to main trail, and then walk up.
You're hilarious - just tells us!!!
Heli-tography
You keep telling the truth of landscape photography and others won't partake...wait....KEEP IT UP!!!!! 😉😁 Damn..was hoping to win that pile of... congrats John! Along with gorgeous photography and epicously made comps, you videos always make me smile or bust a gut... Gavin, my antidepressant. Smashing vid my friend. Cheers, Gavin!!!!!! PS, that last image is smurftastic! Awesome photo!
What an incredibly beautiful image to end the vlog with, just stunning! ✨
That last shot was fantastic, moments like that just keep you going for the next one.
your enthusiasm for landscape photography makes me want to go out and shoot. Love your videos. keep them coming. Cheers from Australia! hopefully one day you will come shoot down here!
Gavin great video and those images at the end are stunning, Just goes to show never give up this is what landscape photography is about and what makes it amazing getting out to capture the beauty of what’s out there🙌👍
I love the banter between Miss Amanda and you!
Great video like all your videos. Only recently getting into photography and learning lots from your videos. When I started out I thought I was gonna travel to all the main beauty spots to get the impressive photos but have realised that I need to be able get good photos from the average/poor locations to test what I’m learning. Can’t wait for my copy of Chasing Awe to arrive to Ireland 😊
Awesome video. You’re a legend. Thank you. 👊🏼
Great video! Was just thinking about the footprints a sec before you mentioned it :) Some perfect nature over there...
Here’s how I remember it .. tights go down :-)
Great episode Pal.. that light teased you for sure but glad you got that shot in the end !!
It's been said before but MAGNIFICENT shots !!! Thank you SO MUCH for taking us with you on your trips - the intense beauty of the mountains is so inspiring, coupled with classic commentary from the master of mirth - its always a winner. 40 Minutes of joy to combat lock-down-itis. Cheers Mate!
Always a nice surprise when a longer video arrives. Great stuff. Just goes to show, shoot for light!
By the way, you're a lad, and so you should remember when the TIGHTS come down you MIGHT get up 🤣👍
Great work man! Great job on the video and the shots!
Wow, what a final image, made it all worthwhile, nice one Gavin!
Some beautiful images in the end. Your persistence paid off.
This may be one of my favorite edits you have put together. I had an outing recently where the weather looked like it would produce a spectacular sunset but nothing was coming together. Clouds were blocking the sun and the light was meek. Just as I had completely packed up to leave, the clouds parted and produced some impressive pinks and purples to the east. Luckily I was able to rush out and grab the shot I wanted.
Lesson learned, don't let a day full of duds kill your creativity. A little bit of patience and perseverance can grant the ultimate reward.
I got my book yesterday, and it is just as incredible as I had hoped it would be. Great work Gavin.
Brilliant. Glad it arrived Jeremy!
Great video Gavin, yr patience paid off, I love yr humour, yr work is helping us get through these darn restrictions here in the UK. And congratulations to you both, if that ring on Amanda's finger is what I think it is ;) , you are a lovely couple.
I was literally just thinking how did he film that part without any foot prints in the snow when you said that lol
Perseverance pays off doesn't it? Those last images are special with those misty clouds. They're beautiful! You and Amanda with those pop rocks, LOL. Thanks for giving me a chance to see some awesome views and images. Thanks for putting a smile on my face!
Love it! Great video
The jet contrail darting into the shot: ugh! There is already a solution and you just used it on your bag and jacket. Fantastic video as always, Gavin.
Watching again. I watch your videos more than once anyway- they are so entertaining. Here in South Africa, we call your appropriate footwear Flip Flops or Plakkies (think 'plucky' for the correct pronunciation.)
First time watcher, very entertaining love the humour, hope you get those sponsors lol
I love how even though you're a pro, the struggle is still so real.
Your last image was amazing! Nature keeps us surprised. Enjoyed your video. Stay safe.
That was a great video. Learned a bunch of things.
I remembered from a cave tour many decades ago: stalagmites - g for ground and stalactites - c for ceiling. I sometimes use the self timer for close-up / macro because when I'm in a twisted pretzel position I use the self timer as a way to prepare my breathing (or rather lack of) before the shutter releases. Nice to know how well the 100-400 GM on the A7Riv handles f16. Great video Gavin. :)
Another great vlog about making the commitment to focus on your vision. As you said, sometimes you just have to turn around.
Dude. That telephoto shot is the kind of shot I live for. I'm so jealous!
Great episode! Absolutely loved those last images. Cheers!
Brilliant video. Final image was absolutely epic 👌
Puredeadbrilliant! Fantastic video Gavin very entertaining, as always thanks for sharing.
Great video as always. Talk to your doctor about Hyponatremia. About 3 gm of salt a day is not only beneficial, but necessary. I know... I've been there, but I live in Texas where we drink a lot of water and sweat frequently.
So, are you saying, Don't ever mess, with a sweaty Texan?
@@TheMrericmichel LOL... all Texans are sweaty about 9 months of the year.
@@kennygo8300 yeah, its hot as balls where i live, most of the year too.
