Stalagmites vs stalactites: an easy way to remember is the 'c' in stalactites is for 'ceiling' as in they drop down from the ceiling, and the 'g' in stalagmites is for 'ground' as in they rise up from the ground.
Years ago I was painting a house and the owner came out to chat with us while we had lunch and I took out a Mars bar for dessert and the home owner told me a story about when he was in a bomber (he a gunner) over Europe making the run back to England during WWII he recalled pulling a Mars bar from his kit; his hands were so cold he had difficulty getting it unwrapped, and it so near frozen that he essentially sucked on it like a popsicle. "Best thing he'd ever eat," he said. The way you cuddled with that Mars bar reminded me of that story. Another great photography video and also, as usual, some of the best entertainment on RUclips. Thanks.
was in the Army and embraced the suck in the field and deployments. then i found nature/wildlife/landscape photograhy years later to help cope with ptsd.....and embracing the suck in photography is well worth it. thanks gavin for the inspiration.
I have binged your videos over the last few weeks. I probably have watched 2-3 dozen or so. You are hilarious and your work is stunning. There is a guy named nico leonard who does high-end watch reviews and he has a sense of humor that is lacking in the watch community. I feel like your humor is in the same mold and is a breath of fresh air in the photography community. Your images have rekindled my photography passion and led to a gfx 100s purchase. Now I have to go out and explore more! Thank you
What a perfect way to start a Monday. 40 min of fun. Actually Muck Boots are quite cool and trendy. Fits well and you can have them in both warm or light versions.
"Chasing Awe" just arrived and it is "brilliant!" Uncle Grumpy's Forward was nice to read. You are one of the few Photographers who gives the location of your shoot, and I appreciate that very much. Thanks Mike
Just another amazing video Gav, right from Amanda's Pop Rocks, to the stunning last image of the snow capped mountain licked by beautiful light. You are truly an amazing photographer, and you show us all how you should never give up for that perfect capture. Well done my friend, well done 👍
just brilliant. when you said 'plop', it took me back (a long time) to primary school whilst I hooted with laughter. but 'I'm going to' was just magnifique. She's a true keeper with that comedic attitude! another excellent and polished video, thanks!
Thank you. Every chance I get, I go out. As I work 8/6 I try to make the best of the times I can. However, watching videos of people just getting mint shots after mint shots on youtube kills me me and makes me question "Am I any good" it's good to see the failure of people you watch. Helps me understand, that "it's not just me". Thank you for sharing this one.
23:58 I love the fact you went through unbroken snow to get up to your camera. I love that attention to detail in your videos. Its a small one most people probably don't notice, but fantastic detail.
I’m currently playing catch up and have got this far so far. Chasing Awe has just been ordered to help me with some inspiration. Like you, I’m also an escapee of the old country and now live in the Middle of Nowhere, Canada. I’m happier behind the camera, shooting dogs or landscapes as I’ve got a face like an angry beaver after being run over and it tends to scare small children and granny’s.
This may be one of my favorite edits you have put together. I had an outing recently where the weather looked like it would produce a spectacular sunset but nothing was coming together. Clouds were blocking the sun and the light was meek. Just as I had completely packed up to leave, the clouds parted and produced some impressive pinks and purples to the east. Luckily I was able to rush out and grab the shot I wanted. Lesson learned, don't let a day full of duds kill your creativity. A little bit of patience and perseverance can grant the ultimate reward. I got my book yesterday, and it is just as incredible as I had hoped it would be. Great work Gavin.
The jet contrail darting into the shot: ugh! There is already a solution and you just used it on your bag and jacket. Fantastic video as always, Gavin.
Perseverance pays off doesn't it? Those last images are special with those misty clouds. They're beautiful! You and Amanda with those pop rocks, LOL. Thanks for giving me a chance to see some awesome views and images. Thanks for putting a smile on my face!
I'm so happy that the day finally delivered some beautiful images for you! No one likes getting skunked when putting so much effort into getting there...but it's even more pressure when you feel like you need to please an audience as well. Of course, just being out in nature can be reward enough. As always, I appreciate all of the effort you put into these videos!
What an effort. I can run and hike a long time but how you ignore rivers is very astonishing to me. Very happy to see you getting that well deserved superlight
I remembered from a cave tour many decades ago: stalagmites - g for ground and stalactites - c for ceiling. I sometimes use the self timer for close-up / macro because when I'm in a twisted pretzel position I use the self timer as a way to prepare my breathing (or rather lack of) before the shutter releases. Nice to know how well the 100-400 GM on the A7Riv handles f16. Great video Gavin. :)
As another post has said. Made my Sunday even better Gavin. Talent and making folks smile (laugh over here in this house). We both really appreciate you and Amanda. Thank you! ~Mike, Montana
Stalactites hang from the ceiling (“tites” from the top, the “t” in tites = top) of a cave while stalagmites grow from the cave floor. As always, a wonderful, entertaining video. Thank you for all the hard work you put in your work.
Watching again. I watch your videos more than once anyway- they are so entertaining. Here in South Africa, we call your appropriate footwear Flip Flops or Plakkies (think 'plucky' for the correct pronunciation.)
Great video Gavin, yr patience paid off, I love yr humour, yr work is helping us get through these darn restrictions here in the UK. And congratulations to you both, if that ring on Amanda's finger is what I think it is ;) , you are a lovely couple.
Another terrific video! Your videography, humor, tutorials and of course your significant other makes these RUclips videos a must see event!! Keep up the fantastic job!!
I agree Gavin when you got that shot in your mind and it does not turn out like it was supposed to can and is a real downer like the light on the top of the mountain it was not cooperating for crap it would made me mad myself after all the time you spent plus fuel and wear and tear on your vehicle. But you know just as well as me nothing happens as it should and dreams are made to be shattered.
I can totally relate with this „expectations“ thing 😅 I went for a very long hike this weekend, hoping I could capture a specific lake with the snow around it, but of course the lake was still frozen, so I wasn‘t able to get the shot I had hoped for. But I had a good time during the hike and the view was still beautiful.
Thoroughly enjoyable Gavin. Classic Fototripper vlog, in the style of a couple of years ago. Nice balance between photography and chuckles and a nice pace, to the point were the video flowed so well that I didn't even think about the length of the vlog, even after initially seeing the total length before watching. Its true what you say...the photography frustration is pretty high in the UK at the minute with the covid lockdown. Keep safe and well. S.
Gavin, this is a great video, the landscape is so beautiful and the way you present your search for the right image is both educational and entertaining at the same time. I'm really fond of your videos as I have a good time watching them and learning from all the reasoning you apply into your images and to these situations we've all come to face when going out to photograph landscapes. This is a great amount of work you go through to put these videos together. You should indeed have more subscribers, but anyways, at least count on my loyal following of your work. please keep it up!
Congratulations to the lucky winner, something really special and unique. Thank you Amanda for reminding me of this candy, now I want some, maybe a new sponsor for your videos ?
Great video as always. Talk to your doctor about Hyponatremia. About 3 gm of salt a day is not only beneficial, but necessary. I know... I've been there, but I live in Texas where we drink a lot of water and sweat frequently.
