- If you plan to do any figure carving of human or animal faces in your blacksmith shop, you will want an eye punch. This punch is forged from S7 tool steel, but could easily be made from salvaged coil spring.

Good job John
Another fine video, keep up the good work
Thank you for the video, Not I eye punch I was looking for, but super interesting non the less.
Gave me an idea on how to make a rivet header. Thanks
nice
Oh, eye see what you did there.
Been catching up on allot of your videos always filled with great info for the beginning blacksmith I've been forging for about 3 months now any chance I get when I'm not at work and if I ever have a question it seems you've already made a video to cover it and I thankyou
Another method is to place a ball bearing in a dimple of bar stock. Heat the end of you soon to be punch or header, isolate the heat, and drive down onto the bearing. Thanks for doing this video!
I had heard of that, but it didn't occur to me at the time. Of course by using a ball end punch you can see where the dimple is and correct is it's off center.
Black Bear Forge i suppose it would make for a better rivet header, if over sized stock were used. A lot easier than trying to use a 5/8 rod on perhaps a 1/4 inch ball. Good point!
Ha I've dealt with fish lips a time or two.
possible rams head gotta love a dragon brilliant videos thanks
I think we will certainly plan on a rams head. A dragon would also be fun.
dang, spent half a hour with a dremel doing this a couple of weeks ago!
I have done the same thing.
It's gotta be hex to be cool.
Thanks John, this is very good info. I have a book entitled "Iron Menagerie" and I'll bet you have it in your library as well. It talks about using ball bearings (whatever size is needed) to form the eye on the end of a bar. The book says to hammer the end of the bar down on the ball bearing and offers a caution about having the ball flying around the shop. I haven't tried it yet, but perhaps the "fish lips" would help hold the ball in position on the end of the bar. What do you think?
I think so. The fish lips aren't generally a good depression for the eye, but they do make a great depression for refining with a punch or probably a ball bearing. I do have that book and will need to get it out again.
I recall on a previous video that you mentioned trying some Blacksmith Teaching. But i don't recall why you no longer do that. what was the reason you quit? you're REALLY good at teaching.
Thank you. I think I may have said I have thought about it. But I have never actually taught any formal classes. My shop is very one person oriented, so It would be difficult to have more than one student.
👍👍👍🍻
WIZZARD! :D
Hi John good video. did you have a chance yo see kovko kova4 thought you might like some of his tools and candle holders.
I have watched a little and like what I see. I do like his big spring swedge
I am having a hard time finding the video that involves the eye punch and the RR spike on a stick.
This may be the one you're looking for. ruclips.net/video/ilhGvulxJM8/видео.htmlsi=11KckmRc9YKh1fGN
@@BlackBearForge , thank you so much!! I greatly appreciate your kindness. You are a great blessing to us!
Did u harden the s7. If so how
I did. S7 is air hardening and requires a critical temperature of 1700F. I bring it up to heat slowly in an electronic oven. Then I put the struck end down in a bucket of vermiculite leaving 3/4 of the tool with the working end sticking up to air cool. I then temper it in a toaster oven. Its pretty easy with the electric oven, but easy to get wrong when judging color by eye.
cliff hanger
I am uploading the wizard head video as I type. I hope it was worth the wait. 😉
Aww come on, you’re gonna make us wait?
Only an extra day. 😉
