Thanks so much for this video. I made one today to complete a longhorn steer inspired by John Switzer at Black Bear Forge. I only had mild steel on hand to make it but it held up well. Probably won't last too long but worked in a pinch.

This is maybe the first exception I've seen to the rule of "always forge to a square and then round it up". I'm always interested in the exceptions, as they are virtually always enlightening.

Really enjoy your channel Gary. Just getting a blacksmith shop added to my hobby machine shop and I am learning from yourself and John Switzer for the most part. Have you ever tried putting your hold fast in the pritchel hole? Mine seems to work much better there. Cheers and waiting for the next video.
It won’t fit, it’s too fat, I need to make a smaller one if I want to use the pritchel hole.
Same as Gary, my hold fast is too big for the pritchel, but a bit loose in the hardy, but I use a section of 1x1 angle iron that's the same length as the anvil height to improve the fit. It seems to help. I do have a smaller hold fast that fits the pritchel, but it doesn't have adequate clamping force for anything more than light duty work.

Good stuff. Been busy with the horses? Horse show season is in full swing here. There is one every week. I think you sent us all your weather. It’s rained 45 days out of 53. All the horses are wet and soft. I wish I could transplant some Cobb feet on some of these Thoro breds.
It's been pretty bad here too! A whole months rain in a day yesterday!
One day yikes. How do you handle lost shoes?? Charge ? No charge? It’s so wet and muddy here it’s ridiculous. It rained again Sunday and Monday all day. Nice and cool today. Woke up and it was 45 F degrees. Burrr.
Shadeskast that depends on several factors. How long it’s been on and if I like the person or not!
Good point. Then I would charge them all. I don’t really like anyone when it rains this much.
You are to be congratulated on finding a spring that is not powder coated. The last 5 I've found were all powder coated and were a pain to clean. Ruins the smell of honeysuckle near my smithy.
Hi, Gary. Greetings from across the pond. Thank you for this. I noticed that you temper back to a blue, Is this particular to coil spring, or is it your standard temper? I am a hobbyist myself, but everything I've seen and heard tempers to a straw color. Just curious. Thank you again.

Whats the reason for tapering the "hitty" end ? ...
Makes it look pretty.
It helps keeps the tool from mushrooming.
Exactly what I was going to say it gives you time to see a mushroom forming before it becomes dangerous and might chip off and hurt you
