Okay, it's been a while since this video and today I got a c300 with an electric column and steering lock was bad .
Appreciate this a ton , lowered and drilled (wasn't THAT hard) and in no time had the ESL out.

A stop collar on the drill bit would allow drilling, without damaging the gear with confidence. A length of rubber hose over the bit or a stop collar on the bit would prevent the bit from grabbing as it exited the PC board.

I did it!!! Thank you for making this wonderfully helpful and empowering video. I had to drill through the metal casing and the mother board to turn the wheel with a #2 phillips. Had to remove the airbag and steering wheel for drill bits to reach. The airbag removal was tricky to release the springs. The indents in the side that I poked through with a small flathead were a little further forward, towards the steering wheel, so when I had trouble engaging the spring to release the airbag. I needed an 18" breaker bar to unscrew the center steering wheel machine screw. Yay! THANK YOU!

If my "only" problem is a lost key and a dead EIS, is there an alternative to the fancy tools and drilling? As far as I know, the ESL on the car I'm dealing with is not defective. Is there a way to feed power to it to actuate the motor without drilling into it to physically move the gear? I bought a set that includes the steering lock, EIS with key, and ECU from the same salvage vehicle. And, what should be the installation sequence? New ESL LAST, I would think? (forget the multiple edits as I learn from other videos shown to the right of this one)

There s a chance the ESL is fail “bad” enough even if u hammer it or so it’s still not moving (motherboard fail) . Then u need to remove the column , but you guys really do find a smart way to cut that section for an easy entry.
You guys are real pro and do install an actual unit . I do the cheaper way by just clone those data from the ESL EIS ,getting the key password and put it into a ESL emulator . It still have the ESL opening sound , it’s way cheaper . My customer happy n I happy

I think what he meant was remove it while you can unlock it. leave it plugged in and zip tie it up under the dash. This is what I did. The column just doesn't lock. Which I can care less about. If anything doing this may make it last longer as it virtually removes most of the pressure off the motor and if it dies, no drilling of the ESL or removing the entire column required. Great video by the way. Best I have seen in regard to how the lock works and how to remove it when it failed locked without taking out the column. @@SuperMarioDiagnostics

I just went through this rodeo with my 2011 E550 coupe. The ESL plug has an emulator attached to it and it is not plugged into the ESL.. I still need to verify if the ESL is there. I don't think so but things are still open so I can check. Is there a way to bypass/remove the ESL and still have the car start with the key? When the wires to the emulation were dislodged from the connector the car would not start - all else worked fine but no start. I pulled the battery and checked it , the starter and checked it, pulled the EIS and checked it for broken solder pins or connectors and then noticed a damn KRD emulator was unplugged from the ESL connector .. one or two wires - wired it back in and she started up... - the onyl reason why I pulled the lower footwell cover was to repalce a bulb .. what a surprise as the car was blocking my driveway so my other cars were useless until I moved it .. what a relief. but is there a way to remove the emulator/ESL and still have the card start with the EIS and the key only? I don't need a steering lock. *** Great vid BTW!

    EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.
Please do not start stripping out your column or drilling holes in the steering lock until you are absolutely certain the fault does not lie within the EIS module. (The bit you stick your key into)
It's very easy to remove the EIS just unscrew and pull underneath the dash. Go and get it tested with your key.
The EIS can go faulty through the induction coil burning, the IR receiver breaking or dry solder joints on the PCB. It's not extremely rare like some will tell you. It presents exactly the same symptoms as the ESL fault.
If you have any kind of electrical fault in tandem with the steering lock like windows not working, boot not opening or fuel flap unlocksble then you likely have a faulty eis not a steering lock problem.
You'd be an idiot to strip down a column without checking the EIS first.
