OK, for those who do not know love stories under the totalitarian regime of the 30s and the Russian mentality. The policeman is in love with her and considers her his girlfriend, but he also knows that she does not love him. But she loves Dimash and the policeman was informed that they were secretly dating and he decided to catch them together. Dimash managed to escape. The policeman understands that she will never be his. So that no one would get her, he decided to kill her and Dimash. He brought her to Dimash and pretended that he was letting her go, and when she ran with Dimash, he came out and shot them in the back. Got it or not ? This is a dramatic intrigue, so that people draw different scenarios in their heads for another week.
Video director Alina Veripia created 4 scenarios for the MV, and Dimash picked this one. She described the idea behind it : “This is a very beautiful and deep love story that takes place during the years of Stalin’s repressions. In this horror, in this piercing cold, in this crime, the love of two people is born, as if they did not come from this world. And they are so pure, so beautiful in their feelings, that no darkness can extinguish this light." On the question of location, the team made an unanimous decision to shoot the MV in St. Petersburg, because no other city could convey the flavor of the harsh and terrible year of > 1937. Dimash establishes the timeline - "we found each other" first, then "now you are with someone else". The couple`s enemy is an NKVD officer who wants to claim our hero`s girl for himself. The officer represents power, so he can claim anything he wants, and he can get away with anything. "Under Stalin, on the orders of the NKVD, anyone could be arrested, imprisoned or shot as an enemy of the people." - as another user commented. Beauty of love, purity, and evil`s attempt to destroy it, in a harsh era in history. It`s not about forbidden love, it`s about the attitude of evil towards good and love, and it`s attempt to >make< them forbidden ; to reduce a "world full of color" down to only "a flash in the sky". The switch back and forth between images of the happy couple and images of the girl being pestered by the NKVD officer, has the purpose of highlighting the contrast between the sun-lit beauty of good and love, and the grim-colored ugliness of evil intentions. Our hero and his girl try to accept the forced separation between them, the new "definition" of happiness under the abusive regime, but they can`t bear nonsense forever, and they try to escape it. And it`s not a cliff-hanger : the subject of the story is the fate of beauty, good and purity under an oppressive regime, and the self-entitlement of evil, that puts it`s stamp over it, with the gun shot - like a punctuation mark, "full stop".
Just like dear old Russia is unleashing evil in Ukraine and by extension the rest of the world right now. Ironic that the song is Russian, or perhaps not.

El coche, la ciudad, los uniformes te dan las fechas... y el comportamiento de cada personaje te coloca en la situación, la paz y la inocencia que tú buscas esta en el amor puro de los jóvenes, el abuso de poder está representado en el comportamiento de los personajes con uniforme y la paz deseada esta representada en las sabanas blancas a la que corren escapando los enamorados, hay muchísimos detalles en el Video que te dan la información para que se puedan entender el relato. La calidad cinematográfica del vídeo es muy buena así como la Iluminación... la voz y actuación del Dimash es excelente y como siempre fantástica y mágica.
Sublime video - so beautifully shot - love the feel of old world 30's Hollywood/European films in this. I'll be honest and say that when the song first dropped I wasn't sure if I liked it or not - the video, the imagery...it marries up to the words and now I love it. My take on this is the 2 lovers are exactly that in love, together - the oppressors are after Dimash's character - he flees, his love does exactly what anyone would do for their beloved...she covers for him. The oppressor takes what he wants and she is now his victim..his pawn. He knows that if she sees her beloved, if he frees her, he will get what he wants - to separate them forever. If the oppressor can not have her, then her lover will not either. He 'sets her free' so he can punish them both. That shot at the end...if the oppressor has shot Dimash's character, she will never be with him again...the oppressor will have punished her for not wanting him...if his shot kills her, then he will have punished her and punished her lover - either way, that shot ends things.

Thank you both. I loved seeing/hearing you two discuss this! I love this video and feel like I want to watch the movie! Igor Krutoy composed and Igor Nikolaev wrote the lyrics. This is placed under Stalin's regime. Filmed in St. Petersburg, Russia. The video shows the contrast of beautiful love and forced domination. I feel that the bad guy knew that she loved Dimash's character and took her to him, like 'fine, you go join your lover' (said in a snide nasty man voice). Then the bad guy confidently takes his time getting out of the car planning of shooting them both. Dimash's character and the woman run fast into the sheets down the ally. Of course they escape the evil man because the bad guy is arrogant and thinks he will kill them with no trouble and therefore takes his time.... but he is wrong! Dimash's character knows how to escape as shown before when he left the apartment. He takes the girl by hand and saves her and they run to Kazakhstan and live and love happily ever after :D TaDa!

This MV is set during Stalin's regime, and the guys in uniform belong to the NKVD (later known as the KGB). During this time period, there were many abuses of power, and ordinary citizens could be arrested on any pretext and imprisoned or killed. In this MV, the NKVD officer wants Dimash's wife (or girlfriend) for himself, so he takes her, and Dimash is on the run. (Or it could also be interpreted as Dimash being on the run from the NKVD, they search the girl's place looking for him, and then the officer decides he wants the girl for himself and forces her to become his mistress.) Later, when it is evident that she is never going to warm up to the officer, he decides to "set her free," but takes his revenge on her/them. I think this story is a warning that acts of brutality like this can happen when corrupt leaders come into power and when those who are tasked with protecting the people abuse their authority instead. But ultimately, love is stronger than war, corruption, or misused power. Even at the end, though they might have died for their love, nothing could separate Dimash and the girl.
I actually understood that the girl doesn't love her high ranked husband and is in love with Dimash's character... therefore the husband finds him and wants revenge...

My take is, the end is tragic. It's sublime, takes the meaning to another, universal level. This is not just a single love story but a picture of those miserable times - authoritarian regimes as you cleverly noticed, about themes like good vs evil, love vs hatred, freedom vs repression. A lot of symbolism as always with Dimash's works. Like those white sheets as a symbol of freedom, and Dimash standing firmly in front of them. Awesome. So many tragic stories from that period, Stalin's repressions in the 30s. Deportations and executions cut short millions of lives, human made famines wiped away wide populations... in Kazakhstan, Ukraine and other countries part of the USSR. In a way, this video seems relevant also today. Especially those themes about freedom vs repression, and authoritarian regimes. I see authoritarianism is in the rise in many countries (includin the US). It rises questions, and worries a lot. That world is represented poignantly in the clip Okay. Do people really want that? Or, is it possible to prevent somehow? Interestingly, another Dimash's song Daididau tells about the same period. (Dimash made his own arrengement to that beautiful Kazakh folk song when he was 15.) An author of Daididau, a Kazakh writer, got jailed where he was told a lie that his wife had left him for another. When he was finally released he found out she has been waiting for him and they were happy together - sadly not very long. He was again arrested and this time executed. So, the song Daididau is a part of Kazakh history, not a tragic love song only. Dimash is a profond artist (as well as those who work with him I guess). He presents us touching human stories that can be identified with but at the same time he always strives for universal meanings. Huh, this became a very long post:)

I was surprised that Dimash's character didn't put the lady in front of him to try to protect her with his body from the bullet. They lived happily ever after and raised several extremely musical children!

I caught a "backstage" video of how they filmed this MV and saw the actual end where Dimash's character (spoiler) got shot and collapsed in the girl's arm... You both were left with your mouth open when the mean guy pulled out the gun. I think it was a wise decision to leave the official MV with that black screen at the same time of the gunshot. No one, and I mean NO ONE wants to see Dimash being shot. All the Dears will be so upset. What a cliffhanger!

Nice reaction. Not sure you both have heard of this amazing crossover group from South Korea called Forestella. If not, I strongly recommend that you both should check them out. The gun shot reminds me of the one in PhantaCity. If you haven't seen that, it is a 20 min. video of something Dimash did for Chinese TV on Gloria Wu's Y.Tube channel (G Wu) with backstage footage and Eng. subs. Dimash played a boxer who's girlfriend took a bullet meant for him, and in the backstage footage, it's pretty funny how shy he was about acting affectionately back then compared to lately. In "OKAY", I think that Dimash would be the target, since he was the reason she would never have feelings for the officer.
This video is set in 1937 during the Stalinist purges. The secret police had total power. They executed millions of people--not just their political enemies, but also ethnic minorities who they considered "untrustworthy." Musicians, dancers, and artists were among them. Dimash as the hero perhaps represents both of these categories. His song Daididau was written by a Kazakh dissident writer, poet, scientist and teacher, Mazhan Zhumabaev, who was arrested and murdered during one of these purges in 1938. History if not remembered can repeat itself. This kind of oppression should never happen again, and yet it still occurs around the world today.

Now I understand why this video was delayed for about 3 months. It was supposed to debut at an event in Moscow but because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine both Dimash and Igor were taken off the program. The setting for this video us Stalin's oppresive regime. The stark parallels between the murderous Stalin and Putin cannot be denied. If it aired in Moscow, Dimash and Igor may have been arrested given Putin's edicts. Plus I do not know the status of Igor Kurtoy. He is a Russian but born in Ukraine plus in some publications he is listed as a Russian oligarch so the economic sanctions may be impacting him. Dimash cannot escape the politics of the time. COVID interrupted the trajectory of his career then the uprising in his Country this Winter and now Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

El coche, la ciudad, los uniformes te dan las fechas... y el comportamiento de cada personaje te coloca en la situación, la paz y la inocencia que tú buscas esta en el amor puro de los jóvenes, el abuso de poder está representado en el comportamiento de los personajes con uniforme y la paz deseada esta representada en las sabanas blancas a la que corren escapando los enamorados, hay muchísimos detalles en el Video que te dan la información para que se puedan entender el relato.
La calidad cinematográfica del vídeo es muy buena así como la Iluminación... la voz y actuación del Dimash es excelente y como siempre fantástica y mágica.
Sublime video - so beautifully shot - love the feel of old world 30's Hollywood/European films in this. I'll be honest and say that when the song first dropped I wasn't sure if I liked it or not - the video, the imagery...it marries up to the words and now I love it. My take on this is the 2 lovers are exactly that in love, together - the oppressors are after Dimash's character - he flees, his love does exactly what anyone would do for their beloved...she covers for him. The oppressor takes what he wants and she is now his victim..his pawn. He knows that if she sees her beloved, if he frees her, he will get what he wants - to separate them forever. If the oppressor can not have her, then her lover will not either. He 'sets her free' so he can punish them both. That shot at the end...if the oppressor has shot Dimash's character, she will never be with him again...the oppressor will have punished her for not wanting him...if his shot kills her, then he will have punished her and punished her lover - either way, that shot ends things.

Thank you both. I loved seeing/hearing you two discuss this! I love this video and feel like I want to watch the movie! Igor Krutoy composed and Igor Nikolaev wrote the lyrics. This is placed under Stalin's regime. Filmed in St. Petersburg, Russia. The video shows the contrast of beautiful love and forced domination. I feel that the bad guy knew that she loved Dimash's character and took her to him, like 'fine, you go join your lover' (said in a snide nasty man voice). Then the bad guy confidently takes his time getting out of the car planning of shooting them both. Dimash's character and the woman run fast into the sheets down the ally. Of course they escape the evil man because the bad guy is arrogant and thinks he will kill them with no trouble and therefore takes his time.... but he is wrong! Dimash's character knows how to escape as shown before when he left the apartment. He takes the girl by hand and saves her and they run to Kazakhstan and live and love happily ever after :D TaDa!

Director Alina Veripia was blown away when she learned she was to create the story and video for Dimash's new song 'Okay.' I think she was always the wife or lover of Dimash's character, but when the soldiers came for him and he wasn't there, someone decided he wanted her for himself. This MV is set during Stalin's regime, and the guys in uniform belong to the NKVD (later known as the KGB). During this time period, there were many abuses of power, and ordinary citizens could be arrested on any pretext and imprisoned or killed. In this MV, the NKVD officer wants Dimash's wife (or girlfriend) for himself, so he takes her, and Dimash is on the run. (Or it could also be interpreted as Dimash being on the run from the NKVD, they search the girl's place looking for him, and then the officer decides he wants the girl for himself and forces her to become his mistress.) Later, when it is evident that she is never going to warm up to the officer, he decides to "set her free," but takes his revenge on her/them. I think this story is a warning that acts of brutality like this can happen when corrupt leaders come into power and when those who are tasked with protecting the people abuse their authority instead. But ultimately, love is stronger than war, corruption, or misused power. Even at the end, though they might have died for their love, nothing could separate Dimash and the girl.

My take is, the end is tragic. It's sublime, takes the meaning to another, universal level. This is not just a single love story but a picture of those miserable times - authoritarian regimes as you cleverly noticed, about themes like good vs evil, love vs hatred, freedom vs repression. A lot of symbolism as always with Dimash's works. Like those white sheets as a symbol of freedom, and Dimash standing firmly in front of them. Awesome.
So many tragic stories from that period, Stalin's repressions in the 30s. Deportations and executions cut short millions of lives, human made famines wiped away wide populations... in Kazakhstan, Ukraine and other countries part of the USSR. In a way, this video seems relevant also today. Especially those themes about freedom vs repression, and authoritarian regimes. I see authoritarianism is in the rise in many countries (includin the US). It rises questions, and worries a lot. That world is represented poignantly in the clip Okay. Do people really want that? Or, is it possible to prevent somehow?
Interestingly, another Dimash's song Daididau tells about the same period. (Dimash made his own arrengement to that beautiful Kazakh folk song when he was 15.) An author of Daididau, a Kazakh writer, got jailed where he was told a lie that his wife had left him for another. When he was finally released he found out she has been waiting for him and they were happy together - sadly not very long. He was again arrested and this time executed. So, the song Daididau is a part of Kazakh history, not a tragic love song only. Dimash is a profond artist (as well as those who work with him I guess). He presents us touching human stories that can be identified with but at the same time he always strives for universal meanings.

I caught a "backstage" video of how they filmed this MV and saw the actual end where Dimash's character (spoiler) got shot and collapsed in the girl's arm... You both were left with your mouth open when the mean guy pulled out the gun. I think it was a wise decision to leave the official MV with that black screen at the same time of the gunshot. The gun shot reminds me of the one in PhantaCity. If you haven't seen that, it is a 20 min. video of something Dimash did for Chinese TV on Gloria Wu's Y.Tube channel (G Wu) with backstage footage and Eng. subs. Dimash played a boxer who's girlfriend took a bullet meant for him, and in the backstage footage, it's pretty funny how shy he was about acting affectionately back then compared to lately. In "OKAY", I think that Dimash would be the target, since he was the reason she would never have feelings for the officer.

This video is set in 1937 during the Stalinist purges. The secret police had total power. They executed millions of people--not just their political enemies, but also ethnic minorities who they considered "untrustworthy." Musicians, dancers, and artists were among them. Dimash as the hero perhaps represents both of these categories. His song Daididau was written by a Kazakh dissident writer, poet, scientist and teacher, Mazhan Zhumabaev, who was arrested and murdered during one of these purges in 1938. History if not remembered can repeat itself. This kind of oppression should never happen again, and yet it still occurs around the world today.
What happened at the end? Well, since Dimash is singing about it, 😉🤪🌷he must have survived… The question of course is whether the girl died…
The story is left "hanging" for your imagination! Who was shot - he or she? Up to you to speculate.

The policeman understands that she will never be his. So he decided to kill Dimash. He brought her to Dimash and pretended that he was letting her go, and when she ran with Dimash, he came out and shot Dimash in the back. He used her to kill Dimash. Got it or not ? This is a dramatic intrigue, so that people draw different scenarios in their heads for another week. But you don't have to do that if you follow the lyrics. Has anyone ever wondered why the video does not match the lyrics? This is because the video shows the story before the shot, the lyrics tell about what happened after the shot. Now I understand why this video was delayed for about 3 months. It was supposed to debut at an event in Moscow but because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine both Dimash and Igor were taken off the program. The setting for this video us Stalin's oppresive regime. The stark parallels between the murderous Stalin and Putin cannot be denied. If it aired in Moscow, Dimash and Igor may have been arrested given Putin's edicts. Plus I do not know the status of Igor Kurtoy. He is a Russian but born in Ukraine plus in some publications he is listed as a Russian oligarch so the economic sanctions may be impacting him. Dimash cannot escape the politics of the time. COVID interrupted the trajectory of his career then the uprising in his Country this Winter and now Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
