Honestly, the guilt Bruce feels over being happy in this movie is some of the most complex and interesting emotion work I've seen in a movie bar none. It's actually crazy. How does a team of writers make the decision to make a character whose whole thing is misery, miserable because he is happy. It's both true to the character and a complete inverse of the expectations of that character. Seriously one of my favorite lines of all time.

I think TAS Batman is the best incarnation of Batman. Not only did they do an excellent job of developing Batman but they gave him a depth of empathy and compassion rarely seen in other interpretations of the character.
TAS Batman genuinely wants to help everyone, including his worst villains. Because Batman understands how just one bad day can ruin someone's life, he wants all the criminals and villains he fights to have a chance to overcome their trauma, so they can one day redeem themselves.

    -The 90's X-Men and Spider-Man cartoons don't hold up

    • @SwedginSanFrancisco
      @SwedginSanFrancisco 7 лет назад +18

Yes, if the video mentioned Conroy being the best Batman I would have included that on the list, though I think that statement is less controversial since none of portrayals of Batman are nearly as well regarded as Heath Ledger's Joker.
And yes, Justice League Unlimited is one of my favorite shows ever, cartoon or otherwise. Almost all of the DCAU is worth revisiting.

I'm definitely sure Matt Reeves would have discussed with Bruce Timm regarding some story elements of The Batman.
Finally after so many years, we finally going to see some form of adaptation of Batman the animated series in live action.

Imagine the move without it. The fight has just barely started, and The Joker just lodges this cleaver deep into the side of Batman's ex's head. I imagine there's a moment of silence as Batman and Joker just stare at the collapsed corpse, spewing blood and fragments of skull all over the floor. You can tell they're both just thinking, 'holy shit. I can't believe that just happened. That went bad so fast.' Then Bruce falls to his knees, mourning the fact that from the moment they both became obsessed with the deaths of their parents, their love was on a slow moving train with this as the only destination. Bruce doesn't go over to her, just stares at the ground and weeps. As the screen fades to black, we hear The Joker start to laugh.

Bruce's guilt over being happy is my favorite thing ever done with his character. The Nolan movies show shades of it but not in the right light. The sadness, grief, and all that entails as the driving factor for his origin is almost a choice. It's comfort, it's familiar. Sometimes pain is the only thing a person has, or what they cling to the hardest. Letting go of it means that you truly lose everything about the loss. Not having the pain means they aren't with you anymore. Wasn't really a fan of the movie "Manchester by the sea" but that exact thing is one of the ideas explored in the movie and this kids movie did it in better form and in a much more compelling but equally somber way. Wholeheartedly agree. Hamill will always be my favorite. I think because it's a cartoon alot of people can ignore specific things about the animated character but that joker is truly the most terrifying to me.

Love how you incorporated your parents in your video at the end.
Legends of the Dark Knight and the Detective comics were some of my favorite on-going storylines. I am also a fan of the movie Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and Batman the Animated TV Series. The art, voice-over casting choices, the emotion in their voices, the music, the writing -- by far one of the best animated shows I have ever seen. To me, Kevin Conroy set the standard for Batman's voice.. and Hollywood should look at the Animated Series as something to emulate and adapt to the big screen for a live action film. Not mentioned nearly enough, Dana Delany is a fantastic voice-over actress for Bruce's love interest, but she also did the voice for Lois Lane in Superman. I also like the character style and voices of Batman in the Arkham games with new guy Roger Craig Smith, and Tell-tale series games with Troy Baker as Batman's voice. In my opinion, Baker did good as both Batman and the Joker, but it's a hoot to watch Mark Hamill do his Joker voice-over lines live - he is so animated himself.
As for the live actions movies, I prefer fins on the bat mobile too, it just looks more like a "bat" mobile. However, I think the military pod fit into the concept that Chris Nolan was going for - realism rather than feeling comic book-y. I like Batman movies that are comic book-y, just not campy. The Tim Burton's movies were very well-done, even though the setting was not modern-day. As far as the feeling of a Batman movie, I like realism with fantasy that has a noir feeling, but not too much, where the bleakness of the environment overtakes the heart and soul within the hero. What I am not a fan of is the campy 60's Adam West, and the Batman and Robin movie. Though many people think of Adam West as the original or the standard, Batman actually began in the forties with Lewis Wilson and Robert Lowery.

I'm so glad I actually got to see this in a movie theater! It was breathtaking to see that animation and hear that soundtrack (and those voices) in a theater! I'm so glad to continue to see people discover this film and to see more and more reviewing it as the BEST Batman film ever. Which it is. For every point made in this review one can't help but agree. Well done, good sir!

Man, not a second is ever wasted in this film now that just illustrates some damn good storytelling and pacing. I love how this film does not throw any punches and actually uses blood unlike the animated series. You always wonder after so many punches and injuries how Batman and his rogue gallery result unscathed. There's also genuine tension in this film. I love it! I also adore the soundtrack so much as it just such a beautiful testament to Elfman's '89 score but even better!

The scene where Batman masks for the first time has to be the greatest scene in cartoon history. The parent's portrait, the music, staring at the mask before he puts it on, the narrowing of the eyes, Alfred's reaction, and Batman walking past him to destiny. It's so brilliant.

a detail that i really appreciate is the honest implication that andrea actually succeded in killing the joker
he obviously survives, but in the context of a self contained batman story it makes a big impact i think
It means that she'd completely succeeded, and now that her chance to have a life with bruce was over, effectively every part of her old life had been erased
and just killing the joker off in service of another characters arc like that comes off as a bit bold

But I do applaud them for trying to keep with the "grown-up" feel of the film by giving it a song like Batman Returns had (Siouxie and the Banshees) and Batman's Prince soundtrack. It's not a bad song, but it does stand out as odd when compared to Walker's amazing score!

I kind of feel a bit at peace watching this and knowing that there's someone else that gets as excited about this movie as I do.
This movie had no business being as well written as it was. I felt genuine heartache, fear and excitement during a kid's animation. It's wonderful. I don't know if the writers are still around since it's been almost 30 years since the movie came out but I'd have loved to have seen what they could do with a live action Batman movie.
