You are quickly becoming my favorite person! I'm making several of these in a variety of colors to use as background images in my videos and such. I've always loved these simple splashes of color on a white background, and now I can make my own :) Brilliant! Thank you for all these tutorials.
Andrea Kalli Internet Marketing Virtual Assistant Andrea, thank you for your kind words, I love what I do and when I hear comments like yours that really makes my day (and week!).
Helen Bradley It just blows my mind how many settings there are in Illustrator and how well you know them and how to use them. That takes some mad skills!
Excelente video My Lady, i don't understand English very well, but the step by step, was very easy for me, and I like the video, thank you so much. Regards from Venezuela, Colombia y Ecuador
Thanks Halen for your clear instructions. I do understand Russian but I had hardest time following Juli's early tutorials. I don't think they should have been called tutorials, rather demonstrations of her great skill. She is getting much better about teaching, though. I think one important point you missed is that you need to change the blending mode to Multiply after Expanding second time...Thanks again. I subscribed.
+Ana Fedorenko Yes I did Ana. Another viewer also picked this up. I am glad you were able to produce this result from this video. Thank for subscribing.
C dav777 You're not so late - think of it - you are a day ahead of the person who starts today! I am glad you are enjoying my Illustrator video tutorials - I try to make them easy to follow even if you are a beginner and I always make sure to focus on a tool or skill so you have fun while learning.
Thank you Helen, as usual, you demystify everything & make it so sweet & simple for someone like me. Alas, if only I could push that "like" button a thousand ×ssss ..
I love Juli Rose's videos; I've been studying them for about a month. She uses an English-language Illustrator these days, but her older videos are in Russian (as you say in your video). I've typed blend modes and menu items in Russian letter-by-letter into Google translate just to figure out what she's doing, if I don't recognize shortcut keys, so I'd say I paid my dues with her! :P Your video does a great job of emulating her ribbon, but she does one key extra step, in case anyone is interested: after expanding, ungrouping, expanding again, then lowering transparency, she'll also *change the blend mode to Multiply*. One thing no one seems to do is use type cmd-h to hide the edges-so instead of seeing a billion blue paths and clicking off to check out your gradient, just choose View>Hide Edges and you can tweak your gradient to your hearts' (everyone) desire. :)
adarkerlight Thank you for casting some light on the finer details of this process. I am glad Juli has started to use an English language version of Illustrator. Her designs are great but trying to second guess Russian commands for beginner Illustrator users is very difficult. I would say you have definitely paid your dues with her! You certainly went a lot further than I did!
Thanks for all the hard work you put into this channel Helen. The technical detail and clear explanations are really helpful. I added a 5px blur at the end of this exercise and the effect is really swish. If you add some transparency to some of the gradient slider swatches it adds a nice smokey effect.
Thank you very much for posting this video. I spent my morning trying to find an English version of this exact tutorial, since the language in the Juli Rose videos is difficult to follow in the video. I look forward to more videos!
Thank you for this tutorial. You gave clear instructions and explained yourself very clearly. It is good to "hear" your instructions. I have only watched the first few minutes and have subscribed to your channel immediately. Simply because you don't rush the tutorial.
Morgan Field Yes, It is sad because her videos and techniques are wonderful, but inaccessible if you aren't quite knowledgable in Illustrator as you have to work out what she is doing - I had to rewind a few times to really see what tool she used - my Russian (I think that is the version she is using) just doesn't stack up to reading Illustrator panels. Well done learning Spanish, that is a very useful language.
The special thing about your tutorial is .. It's very easy to understand .. your voice/speed is very clear and the main point ... It's to the point and short length ... Great Job ...
Someone asked how to make the lines smoother - Juli's are smoother than mine. I just watched her video again and her lines are closer together and she uses 70 as the steps for her blend. If you want a smoother and denser ribbon then use lines that are closer together and experiment with the number of steps - the more steps the more dense the effect will be. I hope this helps whoever was asking!
Hi Helen that was a really great video but im unable to adjust setting of my pencil tool im using CS6 version. When i double click on it similar dialog box appears with additional option of " fidelity" slider so i tried on adjusting both smoothness and fidelity but my pencil never worked as smooth as yours pleas help
Helen Bradley Hi Helen, I need help doing this. Everytime I try to expand or expand appearance, my blended ribbon shape goes completely crazy and becomes a mass of black. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong because I followed all the steps!
thank you for this video because i did watch hers at one point ant i couldn't follow because of the non-english translation and then she doesn't talk through her videos i like that you talk through your videos so when i am on a small screen and want to see what i am doing i can just listen for the commands and tools you selected when i am unable to watch along side of dong the project.
Randy08ray Thanks for your comment Randy08ray. I am glad you are able to follow along with this tutorial. The effect is awesome and I know how hard it was to follow along with the original version.
there are very view you tubers who are creative and actually tutor through their videos on how to do something. many others on here call there videos tutorials but yet its just a video of them doing the work and we just watch and learn noothing. thank you for being one of the few creative youtubers who teach
I've made about 6 of these so far to use as video PNG backgrounds, with varying color schemes. I just love this concept. I tried to create them as SVG, but my sketch video software seemed overwhelmed with the complexity of it. No worries. They look beautiful.
Andrea Kalli Internet Marketing Virtual Assistant Great news! I was playing with something similar (but different) in Photoshop last night so I am hoping to have a Photoshop CC 2014 video out soon on that.
Hi Helen, I try to follow to do the lines blend for abstract shapes but when got to the blends tool I can not get to select the lines no cross hair what sort of key combination have to have, thanks Helen
Juli Rose JULI!!!! It is your lesson.. I just translated it because it was hard for people to read the Illustrator interface in your video. Thank you for stopping by but kudos to you - it was your technique.
Thanks for tutorial. Can you explain how the original image has the different shades of each color? The original is darker towards the edges of the shape.
jmetz8402 Hi there. I suggest you watch the original video of Juli Rose - she spends a lot of time working on her gradient fill. I don't. I was concerned to show the process of making the ribbon and not spend a lot of time working on colors. If you watch her video you will see how she tweaks her gradient fill - that might help you understand how she gets the effect she gets.
With all of the ribbon selected, she lowers the transparency of the ribbon and then uses the blend mode Multiply. That should give you what you're looking for. Use cmd-h (view>hide edges) to hide edges so you can see your ribbon while its selected. Don't forget to turn it back on, though. jmetz8402
Thank you soooo sooo much! Even though I understand language(russian) of Julias illustrator... without explanation or any comments its to hard to catch up with her! So thank you very much for sharing!
Awesome! I wounder how complex it would get if I were to blend with each line. Let say the top first line is yellow, then make the line below it green, then on the line below it blue, continue down to maybe five lines.
Somehow i can't manage to make it exactly like juli rose... as you do it there is just a plain gradient over the lines... here's multiply in a cool way... the denser the lines the darker the color. Can't seem to replicate it, because the multiply setting in the transparancy menu doesn't have any effect... you know by any chance how she did it ?
Thanks for the tutorial Helen. I tried doing it on a smaller scale and it looked funny. So I was wondering if it can be created then resized smaller without it distorting? Jonathan
Great question Jonathan. If you are making it smaller, then use fewer repeats so it doesn't get too busy. If you make it big and then reduce it everything will close up too much and it probably will look a bit weird. But I'd try both ways (at least the first few steps) to see which looks best to you for your intended purpose. I am looking at this video thumbnail right now and it looks good even though it is tiny but, of course, it looks 'different' to how it will look at full size as you can't see the individual lines. I hope this helps?
Thank you Charlotte! I’m so glad that you enjoyed the video. It’s such a cool effect but so difficult to try and translate it from a foreign language version of illustrator to achieve.
Hi helen, i tried following your tutorial but the 'preview' function doesn't work on my Adobe illustrator (Adobe Illustrator CS6). Any suggestions on why this is?
Thank you so much for all the tutorials! I learned a lot from them. I am curious about the name of this script that you are using (This one which creates a rectangle the size of the artboard), because I would like to use it too.

Can you please do a video on creating gold color effects to text and artwork in illustrator. Thank you so much I love your teaching. They have helped me a lot
It will be more easy to understand that if you show the option largely on the screen of your each video. Because when I played the videos, the every options have been appeared blur on the screen, the large view is easy to understand. Thanks.
Suman, did you make sure you are looking at the video in the correct definition? Sometimes RUclips will set the resolution to a low value and things will be blurry. If you change to use a HD resolution it will look better. Check this post if you are not sure how to do this: support.google.com/youtube/answer/91449?hl=en
Thank you Helen for all these super clear and concise video's that you post. I have learnt so much from you!

I did not realize you also had an RUclips channel also. I must browse threw as I love your tutorials!! xx Helen
