    We show how to convert the plug in Ikea lighting system - Omlopp - to a direct wire version. No need for plugs. We also talk about how to set up different transformers and remotes to run different lights.

    Question: Do you have a Video where you show exactly what you do after you cut the cable?
    Further, is it possible wire the cable directly into the transformer by skipping transformer plug/cable?

    I have looked all over the internet. I want to wire from one AC puck to another to account for varying distances in a closet. The shelf above will be in use so I thought I might be able to route the wires straight back to the wall to protect the wire nuts and connections. Can I wire from puck to puck like I saw on a van build using DC pucks? What do you suggest to protect the wiring on the shelf? THANK YOU so much!

    Thats terrible installation. All the transformers and wirings right there, in plain sigth. You could have put everything in the top of the cabinet, and just leave the light fixtures visible Terrible

    Thanks for the video. Was looking for something like this for 2 years tbh.
    I have a similar setup in my kitchen, 2 runs of cabinets separated by my stove. I had the builder prewire for under cabinet lighting.
    How could I go about doing this for light tape product?

      Stub out low voltage wire to each cabinet run sending them to a centrally located driver. Run a switch leg to the driver.

    Great video! Is the junction box from Ikea and if so will it work with the Utrusta set up? Thanks!

      No, this is a plug mold starter box available at any hardware store.
      Yes, this approach would work for the Utrusta system as well.

    What did u do with ground wire from 14/2 power source ? Doesn't the fixture need to be grounded?

    I know nothing about electrical but I do know one thing. I like simplicity and things aesthetically pleasing to the eye. This looked like a complete mess of wires. People can see under your cabinets when they are sitting in your kitchen.

  • @Jetski270
    @Jetski270 5 лет назад +8

    To messy. Why didnt you place all the transformers on top of the cabinets and run the wire down to connect to the lights.

    • @prokitchenbuilders
      @prokitchenbuilders  5 лет назад

      The wires come from the lights. You would have to run them up to the top of the cabinet which is very difficult. In addition, there's typically only 3/4 of an inch clearance between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling. Not enough room to work in! Also, from a maintenance standpoint they would be inaccessible. Not wise! I agree they are messy, and in this case I actually had to rerun these wires because they were just visible when someone was seated at the island. It is always difficult working with IKEA lighting because there's so much extra wire which is why ideally you would use LED strip lighting.

    Was looking everywhere for an answer whether or not I could splice into the wall wart and wire the IKEA Omlopp directly for a cleaner look. This answered the question! Thanks!
    Is there a way to bypass the remote to control the lights via a different dimmer switch? One that can be controlled via wifi for instance? Or is it restricted to only being controlled by the remote from IKEA?

    • @prokitchenbuilders
      @prokitchenbuilders  6 лет назад +2

      Sure, just add a switch leg to that feed. You don't need the remote. I don't know how well the ikea receiver can handle dimming. Not all LEDs are dimmable and I'm guessing there's no info out there about these lights one way or the other. Try it and let me know!

    • @markreed9146
      @markreed9146 6 лет назад +1

      Pro Kitchen Builders they sadly aren’t dimmable by an external switch. I imagine the ansluta remote control somehow dims via DC current instead of AC. Ive hardwired the adapters and they work great just like in the video. Trying to sync them all to 1 remote now.

      I am a master electrician. The Wiremold extension box that you used to connect the low voltage to the line voltage is not adequate size. Is the circuit being monitored by a ground fault circuit interupter? It must be. Even though it is low voltage it must be installed in a workmanlike manner, and it clearly is not. There is no way an electrical inspector would pass this project. In addition if there were a fire or someone was to be injured by electrical shock there are obvious liability issues that would come into play. Please have this install brought up to code for your sake, the home owners, and anyone would would be operating in this area. And for everyone who reads this, unless it it a plug and play system, please have a licensed electrician do this work.
