Could CLEMSON Expand to the BIG 12 as ACC Implodes? Rumors Say SEC Wants NOTHING to Do With Tigers.

  • The recent developments surrounding Florida State football's exclusion from the College Football Playoff and the ensuing speculation about a potential move to the Big Ten could have broader implications for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), prompting other member schools, including Clemson, to reconsider their allegiance.
    Clemson, a powerhouse in college football and a key member of the ACC, might be evaluating its position within the conference in light of the ongoing issues. The exclusion of the undefeated ACC champion Seminoles from the playoff, despite an impressive season, has underscored concerns about the conference's standing and the potential consequences for its member institutions.
    Similar to Florida State, Clemson may be evaluating the ACC's revenue-sharing model, particularly the conference's TV contract with ESPN, which extends until 2036. The dissatisfaction expressed by Florida State leaders over the revenue-sharing plan might resonate with Clemson's leadership as well. The allure of more lucrative TV deals, such as those secured by the Big Ten and SEC, could be a significant factor in Clemson's contemplation of a conference switch.
    The landscape of college football is evolving, with conferences securing substantial financial gains through lucrative broadcasting agreements. The ACC's position in this changing landscape, coupled with the recent controversies, could raise questions about whether Clemson perceives its future aligned with the ACC or if there's potential for exploring opportunities in other conferences.
    The decisions of other schools, like Florida State, to seek "greener pastures" could prompt Clemson and other ACC members to reassess their conference affiliations. The desire for greater financial benefits, increased exposure, and a more favorable competitive landscape might become compelling factors for schools contemplating a move.
    While these considerations may be speculative at this point, the ripples created by Florida State's situation could extend beyond one school, potentially influencing the decisions of other prominent ACC members like Clemson as they navigate the ever-changing dynamics of college football conferences. The evolving scenario emphasizes the need for conferences to adapt to the shifting landscape to retain their member institutions and ensure their continued competitiveness on a national level.

    People keep overlooking the strategic advantage of taking UVA/VT and UNC/NCSU for the SEC. Not only do they maintain rivalries, you take NC and VA off the board for B1G expansion. No other schools in those states could make such a move. That leaves 4 realistic targets for B1G within this new SEC footprint.(GT, Miami, Clemson, and FSU). Of those, only FSU would move the needle today and for years to come, though it would be devastating for them to jump to B1G even with ND in this scenario. What FL recruit will go to FSU to play in MI, OH, WI, MN in November? They'd just go to traditional B1G powers instead of having their boys playing in SEC. Letting FSU go to the B1G may end up reducing the recruiting impact when they leave the ACC. It's a be careful what you wish for moment for FSU. FL, UGA, and SC may be hoping they make this move as those living room visit will get more spicy.

      You are ONLY thinking like some sports fan ....these are still universities, NOT your gaming/betting video game.....TV money is NOT the only concern and I actually think it will start dwindling.
      UVA and UNC are NOT having any interest in joining THE Severely Educationally Challenged. That is about like saying Stanford and Berkley want to join the Mountain West. Stop with the "pick up sides" game. This isn't grade school and weren't not playing kickball either.

    • @toast803
      @toast803 5 месяцев назад

      @@josephcernansky1794 It's precisely because these are universities in tightly integrated systems. It's not "pick up sides" keeping these schools linked together as you put it. They have state level boards that either make or strongly influence these decisions. As an example, a funny stat I came across suggests ~50% of UNC-CH research actually occurs on NCSU's campus where they partner with the textile, data sciences, and other STEM programs, or simply use the better labs there. Don't know the veracity of that claim, but do know they share faculty, degrees, and budgets. I understand one sees similar integrations between UVA/VT.
      With regards to North Carolina specifically, the state has not only invested heavily into UNC-CH/NCSU and their integration, but also the ACC. The state has a vested interest in the ACC remaining relevant. It's going to be fun to watch how this plays out, but I find it hard that the political winds in NC will allow UNC-CH to curbstomp NCSU. In Virginia, the political mandate is more explicit that UVA/VT must remain linked. VT/NCSU are both research focused universities in the $500 million plus club. In regards to academic rankings, libraries, and research, they'd hold their own within the AAU world everyone seems to covet.
      This is why I suggest UNC-CH/NCSU and UVA/VT end up together in the SEC. An SEC that is looking to up their game on the academic side and research integration along with athletic success. Only reason I don't see a B1G move is the current size of these conferences and "politics" though I'd love to see NCSU and UMD renew their rivalry.

    Lets assume FSU and UNC go to the B1G and the SEC doesn't take anymore. Also assume GT, Boston College, Wake Forest, and Syracuse aren't considered. The pecking order would then be 1) Clemson, 2) Miami, 3) Duke, 4) Virginia Tech, 5-tied) Louisville 5-tied Pitt, and 6) NC State. Can't call the bottom half, but for sure the top 3 or 4 schools would be Big 12 bound if the ACC did break up. Would have to assume after getting marquee teams, the next criteria would be regional match ups. So then after Clemson (17) and Miami (18), the last two teams would be between VT, Pitt, and Louisville. One of those schools plus NC State and Duke would be the new Oregon St and Washington St. Back to square one for SMU, Cal, and Stanford.

      Actually they might. Because Brett values Basketball, Duke will be a valued school. Ideally Brett wanted 16 plus some hoops only schools. I think 20 would be solid, but up to 24 could be accommodated IF it is the right combination of schools.
      Schools that make sense?
      Clemson and Miami are no brainers. I want to point out the others.
      Duke=basketball prowess.
      Pitt= WVa rivalry
      Louisville=basketball tradition and Cincinnati rival.
      VaTech=FB tradition and location.
      The others would be Virginia, NCSt, GaTech as options for balance and scheduling.
      Syracuse and BC? Nah
      So IF we got to 20 with those first four, but Miami and Clemson are there? You take them! That would be 22.
      Still need one more eastern school to because you have UCF in the east. That would be from the GaTech, NCSt, Virginia three.
      Going west?
      Brett is not opposed, but it would have to be into the California markets. OSU and WSU don't cut it. Stanford would IF ND is included somehow. Same situation with B10.
      SMU adds nothing to the B12.
      California just sucks.
      SDSU would be a decent opening into Cali markets, but not a prime spot. Fresno is eh. That is why the west push is just not a priority.
      Could ND be convinced to join? Doubt it.B10 would take them and Stanford as a pair if they wanted a conference situation.
      It's all hypothetical, but when the flush happens, people will do anything to survive. B12 contract is much better than the long term ACC deal. To those never B12 guys.
      By the way.
      Next year's early predictions are that Utah and Arizona will be top ten and top 15, respectively. Add in a Clemson, Miami, along with K State and Oklahoma St. Still some decent FB to be played.
      Brett wants basketball to shine, and it would!

    I wrote ~2 years ago and a few times since that CLEMSON & FSU may get left out depending on how things played out, though unlikely. As things have played out, the B1G prematurely added WASH/ORE, the top ACC targets are UNC/UVA, those teams may be hard packaged with NCSTATE & VATECH (respectively), the SEC doesn't really need CLEMSON/FSU., and the B1G's interest in those 2 may be contingent on UNC/UVA.
    Nevertheless, while FSU could prefer the BIG12 as the place to die or wait out to the next realignment, CLEMSON (an ACC founder) won't do the same. No rational university president will vote to leave an association with ND, STANFORD, CAL, DUKE, etc. for the BIG12 when there are no material reasons to do so.

I kind of feel sorry for FSU because Bowden was a great coach but his fear of meeting Bama and Auburn during the same season was one of the reasons why Florida State did not join the SEC. It seems realy simple to me. There are currently 16 Big 12 schools (after Okl and Tex leave, and the new four come in). Expand to 24. Take the 12 teams that are furthest west and put them in one division.
    Arizona
    Arizona St
    Utah
    BYU
    Colorado
    Kansas
    Kansas St
    Oklahoma St
    Texas Tech
    TCU
    Baylor
    Houston
    This leaves four teams for the Eastern division (Iowa St, Cincinnati, WVU and UCF). Lure 8 schools from the ACC over, to join those four, and you have an Eastern division that looks like this...
    Iowa St
    Cincinnati
    West Virginia
    UCF
    Miami
    Clemson
    NC State
    Virginia Tech
    Pitt

    Big 10 will take Virginia and UNC. FSU is not a research institution so it’s not an academic fit.
    SEC stays put.
    ACC then adds West Virginia and UCF, and UConn. That’s right! Big 12 poaching ain’t done.

Clemson, Miami, FSU, PITT, VA Tech, NC State, Ga Tech, Louisville, all would be welcome, depends on who is open to joining first. I think the BIG 12 stops at 20 teams.

    • @Patrick-sg7cm
      @Patrick-sg7cm 5 месяцев назад +1

      @hackatak the B1G doesn't plan on expanding past 20 and the SEC doesn't plan on expanding past 20 either. That means there are 6 available spots at the table. If all 6 spots get filled, the ACC is left with 11 teams. That's enough to run a viable conference. The Big 10 operated at 11 members for many years.
