Fix Old Cameras: Laws Too?

  • Nonsensical classic camera repair laws are nothing but a lame parody of Newton's Law of Gravity and The Second Law of Thermodynamics. They might elicit a chuckle or a perhaps, more likely, a small groan and a furrowed brow of disbelief. Viewers attempting to find insight or wisdom in either law will indubitably find none.

    As someone who has been into the innards of old cameras - truer words were never spoken. I never realized that a small screw dropped at your foot was impossible to find using in order 1. Hands & Knees with a flashlight 2. Careful sweeping into a dust pan 3. Sweeping the whole area with a magnet (with steel parts) 4. Sweeping the area with a wet paper towel. Little did I realize that the screw was in suspended animation until I stopped all this. I would probably find it the next day by stepping on it with my bare feet - usually in the next room.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  4 года назад +7

      Absolutely. The Law of the Subsequent Screw... where the force needed to remove the last screw increases exponentially with each subsequent screw until the torque needed exceeds the capability of the final screw. Thank you for the fun comment.

    "Mechanisms containing far more parts than ever imagined" most certainly covers my Zeiss Contaflex Super B. I think the designers were trying to see exactly how much they could squeeze into that little body. Should you ever post a video on how to repair one of those, it should start with the thunder clap this one ended with. Thanks for the chuckle!
    Edit: Now that I think of it, that would be a great camera to cover doing some repairs on. There are exceptionally few people out there that will even repair them anymore.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  4 года назад

      Thank you for your comments. What you say about the SUPER B being a complicated mechanical marvel is spot on and your phrasing of such is funny. There is indeed a lot going on in one of those beauties. Maybe at some point in time some of the "simpler" aspects of the SUPER B will be featured in a FOC video.

    I enjoy repairing things. And do so regularly. But cameras are a dimension all their own. Just like my wife's purse, they fall into that last frontier into which I fear to tread. I know the frustration that comes with that one screw that will go missing until long after the thing being repaired has been burned at the stake or buried in the backyard. I can only imagine having to add tweezers and a magnifying glass into the mix.

    • @FixOldCameras
      @FixOldCameras  4 года назад +2

      Indeed, the well heeled purse is a mysterious place best left alone even at insistent invitations to retrieve a needed item - a combination first aid kit, office file draw, beauty kit, magicians bag of tricks, and black hole of cash reserves. On the flip side, it is good to fix things… and vintage cameras, with persistence and patience, you are well with in the realm of an adventurous fixer upper like yourself. Thank you for your comment and your interest in FOC.

    I'm very surprised! You've never seen the black hole of camera repair? Or for that matter, any small repair. You drop say a little cam, when you hear the little "tink" you think it's the sound of the part hitting the floor, right? Nope the "tink" is the black hole opening and swallowing up the part. The proof is how that part will turn up one day when you are sweeping the garage, or bathroom or some other area far away from the place where you worked. Best Wishes to all in 2020, Tom

    • @FixOldCameras

    Great video! Springs are the things that piss me off the most, I think. They'll disappear at the first opportunity. Then of course there are the tiny screws. The rules dictate that the ones that drop onto the floor are actually brass, not steel like you thought, and the magnet doesn't help you find them.....

      Does pushing the battery check button also release complete the mirror cycle. Possible cause is the timing switch, the bulb switch, the timing capacitor shorted or an IC failure.

    Great video! Any recommendations to remove the fake leather of old cameras, without damage it?

    • @tomheckhaus7617
      @tomheckhaus7617 4 года назад +1

      Tough call. If the leatherette is dried out and crumbling as on an older camera, you're out of luck. A more modern camera, say a Canon from the 70's, try a little heat from a hair dryer that will soften it up enough to get under it with a sharp knife, just be careful and lift a corner and gently pull it off. I've had good luck using "Bestine" which is a rubber cement thinner. It gets under the leatherette and dissolves the adhesive. USE OUTDOORS or a well ventilated area. Naphtha as in Lighter Fluid works too. Good Luck.

    • @FixOldCameras

      Tom has posted some good tips. Patience and persistence... give the solvents time to soften the adhesive. Always check solvents chosen to make sure that they to not haze any plastic or vinyl they come in contact with. Isopropyl (91% or 99%) alcohol is pretty much universally safe although it does not work as fast as some of the solvents Tom recommended.

    ¡Hello! I have a problem with my camera Minolta x300s, and im a student from Madrid so i really dont know where someone can help me to fix it. Anyway i watched your videos to figure out how to open it (thanks a lot) I also did a few tests to find the problem bc the light from the exposure sometimes works sometimes not (so the shutter dont). I checked the battery, the capacitor, with tester, everyting works fine. But i discovered that if i activate the self timer, works again the light but if i turn off and then in, the camera it dosent work again, so i move the self timer button until it works. Seems that the problem is there. Can you pls help mee??? I ll be very grateful...
