Talking about the power seat option vs cost - I think many forget that like all things, to compete cant have it all so the lack of a powered passenger seat isnt that big of a deal or the saving in the hidden side panel when the door is closed 99% of the time of that car being owned - isnt a loss. I like how you pointed it all out though.
Forget the GS. Genesis could end up ending Lexus entirely Most automotive journalists including Alex have said they prefer genesis over Lexus by far in all ways. As if Lexus IS now irrelevant
Big medieval-style grille for the front paired with the arrowslits headlight are a bit too much . It would be more digestible without the big lower ''V'' .
Great video! I like that you key into the nuances of why the Genesis costs less than its competitors and why we should appreciate that value. Personally, I agree with you that Genesis cuts the right corners. Unless you are a pretentious rich guy who somehow can’t lift up a sunshade for himself... lol then you might disagree 😂
I got the 2018 G80 sport 365 hp All weel drive. Had it for 2 yrs today. I am trading it in in one yr from now only because I'm doing other things not car related. So nex yr Nov I will be in a 2021 G80 sport V6 all will drive 375 hp. I drove GS Lexus since 2000. Let me honest the G80 knocked the GS into Lexus not even making them anymore. The GS is discontinued. Believe me I went for a GS in 2018. They tried to get me in a LS that has the same engine as my G80. Negative. My dealer whom I've been dealing with since 2000 told me man go buy that G80. So there. Lexus is a great car. With my opinion like I said I was driving GS. I had 5 of them in almost 20 yrs. G80 is that car or I may go for that GV80. They jus need dealers. I had my problems dealing with these hyundia showroom dealers. Lexus is still number one in my opinion with customer satisfaction. I have family members who drive Mercedes n Beamers n jags etc. They say brother Lexus is number 1 in Customer Satisfaction. Genisis rocks. GV80 is tempting. Time will tell. Life happens..
A bit off topic but the revised G70 is beautiful, maybe we’ll get it as a 2022 year model. This current G80 hopefully looks better in person, not sure what to think about the front end design.
Alex, you nailed it in terms of compromises and value proposition. Who needs passenger seat memory or powered window shades? But I avoid cars with no spare. Genesis made a perfect set of compromises. I’ll take premium materials and build quality over “features” all day. And this car delivers better than all the competitors.
They did everything right on this one. They made the "sacrifices" in all the right areas (who needs a 3rd memory seat?) The looks are great. The materials and the interior are fantastic. I think that is the best infotainment center on the market.
Absolutely love this car and the direction Genesis styling went. So elegant inside and out. The 3.5TT is impressive as well. This would be my pick in the segment.
I’d go with Genesis based on price alone. Then when you add the value/standard features and warranty we have a winner. That being said, my fav is the Genesis G70.
The reduced level of adjustability, massage seats, and seat memory on the front passenger seat is unfortunate. I can understand that omission on lower to mid spec packages, but on the Prestige package, it should be included - the front passenger should essentially get every function as the driver seat.
I wonder why are they changing engines so frequently... almost every redesign, every other redesign they come up with an "all-new engine" option... which can explain why the prices of Genesis models are in free fall in the first 3-4 years after released, and 60-70k car becomes 30k car pretty quickly... As always Alex, you knock the review out of the park!!! I feel like I am reading Wikipedia - all info there, clean nice, well done!
Quite interesting that Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti have been trying to tackle the 5, E, and A6 for 20-30 years, never managed to do so, and have all quit and abandoned the segment. Genesis has done a better job in two generations of cars than Lexus managed with four generations.
This is the least selling luxury car in America by a larger margin. "Genesis has done a better job..." - You need to sell the cars you make in order to do a good job.
@@kenedtsu Least-selling? The G80 outsold the GS, RLX, XF, S90, Q70, CTS, etc in the years that it's been sold. Now half the cars on this list are straight up dead lol. The G80 straight up spanked out every other car in this segment that isn't German. And it did it without a dealer network.
A business that others are abandoning is often the easiest kind to enter with some success, as long as you do not expect much profit in your definition of success. Luxury sedans are a shrinking segment in many markets, so you need to be among the strongest incumbents, be leveraging products for another large market where you have an advantage or show up with something seen as having a "shiny new toy" factor.
@Der Schwindel If you're selling in the ~$50K+ range with a car that's about 195" long, you're competing in this class. The RL\RLX was never very good, but it was an attempt to try and compete in the same way that the Volvo S80 was. Their transverse/FWD setup doesn't put them in a different class of car. The ES and GS were targeted at different customers. The ES competes with cars like the now defunct Lincoln MKZ, and the Infiniti I35 when it still existed. The ES is a luxury package Camry, same as the MKZ and Infiniti. The Germans don't make those. The IS is their attempt to compete with what the Germans do make, and I wouldn't be surprised if they ultimately quit that segment as well. The "new" IS is a strong indicator that they do not care about remaining competitive with BMW 3 and M-B C, and are just re-heating an ancient product since all of the tooling is paid for. The fact is that nobody really wants a sports sedan from Lexus. They aren't good at making them, which is why they have given up.
This 8-speed transmission has been around for about 8 years now. Do you have any info on what updates they have possibly done to it? It was always the weak point, as this 8-speed was extremely prone to failure. Just curious if they beefed it up a bit. Thanks.
Certainly can not knock Lexus's reliability but I went to drive the ES (now that we no longer have an updated GS) and I felt like I was in my sister's new Camry with a fancy dashboard. I need a lil more performance in my luxury car. I will give the G80 a try. I have high hopes for this car.
No folding rear sears = NO SALE! Major, major, let down -- this car WAS on my shortlist, but without a folding rear seat I can't justify it. Sedans really need the folding-rear-seat utility. This is a MAJOR oversight on their end -- the last generation G80 was missing the folding rear seat as well. I thought they would SURELY fix this in the new design, but I GUESS NOT!!!
The G80 doesn't offer rear folding seats because in other markets like Korea, that space is designed for electrically adjustable rear seats, which the Germans don't even offer in this class. It's the same reason with the Lexus ES. G80 is also a much bigger car than the A6/5-Series/E-Class, the wheelbase alone is the same length as an 8 Series Gran Coupe. The cabin space is also the largest in the segment. It needs more structural rigidity to maintain that large size, which helps if the seats don't fold down.
@@gasstation405 You can make excuses for the car all you want, but Alex said specifically in this video that the car competes with those two German offerings (E class/5 series), and if it doesn't offer this feature, it will definitely hurt sales. And I'm not biased against Hyundai or anything, we've had 3 in our family.
I am loving the new Genesis design. The only thing I dislike is the lack of fog lights. Which seems to be a trend...not a fan. I get that a good majority of drivers don't use them, but they should lol I'm also impressed with the amount of power out of that 2.5. Overall great job Genesis!
Great reviews. A suggestion is to show the overall shot of the dash sitting in the middle of back seat to get an overall idea about how the front dash layout looks.
No fold down rear seats in the world that we live in that's dominated by CUVs/SUVs? That feels like a huge omission, I've fit my bike and countless other things in my sedan that would have zero chance without a fold-down rear seat.
It's rare to have a rwd based sedan with fold down seats. You need bracing back there to counteract the twisting forces of the engine torque. Especially when you have near 400ft/lbs
@@MillionMileDrive Bracing seems un-needed since the Lincoln MKZ had 400HP and 400 Lbs of torque with folding rear seats out a transverse twin turbo V6 and Torque vectoring rear dif.
That enormous grille is like Wal-Mart "luxury"....make it bigger and flashier and poor people will think its "premium". This is a Hyundai, never forget that.
From what I've gathered. The Lexus ES 350 has lower NVH than the G80 in all trim levels and engine options. I'd say the material quality on the top spec trim ES and G80 are pretty even. Nothing can beat the ES for ride quality comfort and softness.
The other advantage is the you NEVER see the dealer, ever, other than picking up the car new. Genesis includes pick up/loaner car/drop off at your home/office as part of the free maintenance package.
Very thorough review, it takes a lot of talking to cover all these features. It's this or the E Class and I think I prefer the G80. I simply don't like the option list exceptions on the MB even though I would be spending less on options with an MB. List price difference would only be 3 or 4 grand equipped with similar options with a few exceptions. For most, the MB would be the preferred choice with that great name recognition and they're willing to deal. However, I've never been much of a follower. Being a brand new vehicle that has to be ordered, I'm a bit concerned about the deal. It's going to depend on the dealer as to how much they want to get G80's out on the road.
I'd definitely pick the G80 over an e class or 5 series, and certainly over a discontinued/abandoned GS, but I'm disappointed that they shifted their entire engine lineup downmarket. Infotainment and UX in general - minus the admittedly attractive rotary shifter - seems much better thought out than Lexus and most if not all of the German designs. The "basic" cluster is alright but certainly shows the failings of any LCD cluster in comparison to a physical dial. Power figures are well and good, but torque to weight and the torque range are more important. And for $56,600 I'd strongly consider a smaller, lighter, spec'd out refresh Giulia i4 or an even-more-spec'd-out RAM with even more torque and air suspension.
What set up do you use to test cabin noise decibels? I noticed all your decibel readings are higher than what the manufacturers and even other reviewers claim. This seems to be across the board, so I'm just a little puzzled. Thank you for the great work and great reviews!!
I never got how he gets his decibel measurements? A iphone or a dedicated measuring tool. I just use his measurement pool as a reference. Seems the 2020 K900 is the quietest car he's measured. Seems like all new cars/cuv/truck/suv with new models with focus on NVH at any price point come in around 68.5DB to 72DB at 50mph.
Considering the sport sedan head of development for Kia/Hyundai is from BMW, it is not surprising that Alex found that the engine is tilted just like at BMW. He just brought over his trade secrets from BMW and has instituted many of them at Kia and Hyundai. Appreciate this review, for my next car in a few years maybe this is the one I will get.
Alex when you talk about curb weight, can you either list it in the drive review section or say the actual weight out loud so we can know what it is? Apologies if I missed it somewhere
I don't know if I have ever seen a car or even driven one with a tachometer that rotates counter-clockwise @12:38. It just stuck me as "odd" at first, but I am sure it doesn't matter.
The color palette thing is actually a bit ridiculous. In Korea they have a massive color palette for the exterior and interior. I get the need to keep it limited but the US choices seem pretty limited.

Lexus GS RIP 🙏 😢 😪 💔 😔
Forget the GS. Genesis could end up ending Lexus entirely
Most automotive journalists including Alex have said they prefer genesis over Lexus by far in all ways. As if Lexus IS now irrelevant
Big medieval-style grille for the front paired with the arrowslits headlight are a bit too much . It would be more digestible without the big lower ''V'' .
Genesis is making beautiful vehicles. Thank for detail review.
good looking and cabin material is nice. No doubt about it.
Yes thank you! Everybody has been reviewing the 3.5 version i wanna see how the 2.5 has enough power
g80 2.5 gv80 3.5 good!
It's gorgeous😍. Great review.
The car is gorgeous😍
Nice, but I'm holding out for a 2022 GV80 3.5 TT after a 2 year 1-owner lease with low miles. Never buy a first year model.
@@samctm Got the idea from The Millionaire Next Door.
I want to buy g80....
A bit off topic but the revised G70 is beautiful, maybe we’ll get it as a 2022 year model. This current G80 hopefully looks better in person, not sure what to think about the front end design.
Genesis is on another level. Mercedes and BMW don't even come close them.
This is my next car (the same color, in and out, RWD and Prestige pack)!
please please make an N version of this and throw in a super awesome lease deals. i'll sign up in a heart beat.
Asides from the controller love the interior. The simplicity and the use of tech and physical buttons.
Absolutely love this car and the direction Genesis styling went. So elegant inside and out. The 3.5TT is impressive as well. This would be my pick in the segment.
it looks good inside and out,it drives very nice,RWD Architecture,Great value, consider me a buyer
I’d go with Genesis based on price alone. Then when you add the value/standard features and warranty we have a winner. That being said, my fav is the Genesis G70.
I really don’t care about my passengers I care about myself so good for Genesis
Everyone in youtube comment section love Genesis but sales figures tells a different story.
5 series is still the king.
Sales figures are actually rising. A lot of us were waiting for the new cars. Look harder at the sales figures since you know so much😂
@@Playb0ymari 13 years in market and still managed to sell only 21,233 units in 2019. Joke on you buddy.
Engine fires and recalls?
Different is good in my book Genesis as a luxury brand is a refreshing alternative to other more expensive luxury vehicles
Beautiful!!! All around!
Geneiss has been the #1 car maker in JD Power's Initial Quality Index for the last 4 years
JD pOwa doesn't mean shit
@Der Schwindel They failed just give up. Acura, Infinit, And Lexus took too long in this segment
Rumor has it Alex is still in the trunk sulking about the lack of a fold-down rear seat.
Love the car. Way to go Genesis.
Almost no cars in this class size have fold down seats. Usually just coupes and small sedans. I believe the G70 has fold down seats.
@@sugarkang not true. Audi a6 and thr Mercedes and BMW equivalent have them as optional s.
@@sugarkang The 5 series and E class both have (at least optional) fold down rear seats, which are the two segment leaders for luxury mid-size sedans
Genesis design is pure luxury. No doubt about it.
I am loving the new Genesis design. The only thing I dislike is the lack of fog lights. Which seems to be a trend...not a fan. I get that a good majority of drivers don't use them, but they should lol I'm also impressed with the amount of power out of that 2.5. Overall great job Genesis!
17:55 this is better than both the FWD based TLX and ES.
Great reviews. A suggestion is to show the overall shot of the dash sitting in the middle of back seat to get an overall idea about how the front dash layout looks.
Genesis G80 special edition
I can’t wait to see what they’ve done with the GV70, too.
Check out Asian Petrolhead on RUclips, he has an introductory video on G70.
@@asko2677 Waiting for GV70 crossover. :)
@@havok3344 it will be basically the same, just an SUV. But I too am excited to see it when it does come out!
Only if they make the G70 wagon and bring it to north america.
@@barbecuetechtips6024 it would be sweet if they made a G80 wagon to compete with the Benz e-wagon and a6 Avant. Those have gotten too expensive.
Like the Kia Cadenza better, with front wheel drive and smaller/classier grill. Thanks for sharing!
Too bad we didn't get the Korean spec.
Try finding another luxury sedan in this price range that folds now. It'll be awhile. I'll be waiting.
@@michaellim4165 "Try finding another luxury sedan in this price range that folds now"
Mercedes C Class, BMW 3 Series, Acura products in general
Might as well wait the Acura Type S if you need the power.
@@MillionMileDrive Bracing seems un-needed since the Lincoln MKZ had 400HP and 400 Lbs of torque with folding rear seats out a transverse twin turbo V6 and Torque vectoring rear dif.
Nice job. I drive a 2016 Genesis which is the same as a G80. Awesome car!
Wish list for the G80... mild hybrid power train for torque, economy, start/stop. And a fold down rear seat like the midsize Germans.
Who in the world needs three memory selections in the drivers seat? Three is not better than two, just one more.
Excellent review! Thanks.
The other advantage is the you NEVER see the dealer, ever, other than picking up the car new. Genesis includes pick up/loaner car/drop off at your home/office as part of the free maintenance package.
Great !!! Another sucking up to Genesis "review"!!! Way to go Alex!
This is my new daily driver for all things family. The G80 blows most BMWs and Mercedes out of the water at a 30% discount.
Someday in the future, I really want to see an index that tells how many kgs of plastics used in a car...
Great presentation there...you now have a new subscriber ✅
I would only want 1 position Memory, I should be the only one driving it and if anyone else did it must have been a terrible emergency.
Love it and definitely looking to add one to my garage with my gv80
Stunning sedan. Really beautiful, much better than the now so boring BMW's and Mercedeses.
Alex when you talk about curb weight, can you either list it in the drive review section or say the actual weight out loud so we can know what it is? Apologies if I missed it somewhere
I like the Lexus front grill better but we all have our preferences.
Although i cannot effort that car or nearly all the car your review , but i enjoy most your video
That looks like a car out of comic book/cartoon with that huge grill😁as if it as a huge grin.
Personally, I love this new Genesis.
Does that grille double up as a BBQ grid?
I don't know if I have ever seen a car or even driven one with a tachometer that rotates counter-clockwise @12:38. It just stuck me as "odd" at first, but I am sure it doesn't matter.
The color palette thing is actually a bit ridiculous. In Korea they have a massive color palette for the exterior and interior. I get the need to keep it limited but the US choices seem pretty limited.
I thought 67 Firebird when I saw those taillights.Nice look. Kwaysi you say. Never heard quasi pronounced like that! LOL
Looks better than an E class.
Genesis is stepping in to fill the sedan void Lincoln is leaving behind. Shame on Ford for being so short sighted.
HI Alex,
Great review as always.
Any news as to when you'll be reviewing the G80 3.5T? I wasn't able to find it on RUclips, so I'm guessing it hasn't happened yet??
Thanks,

Those might be the ugliest wheels on any vehicle available today. A shame because the rest of the vehicle is one of the most aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
We will see how reliability does over the years.
