      not that surprised. guy i work with had a citroen saxo, did 220,0000+ miles with the original engine, gearbox and clutch, wasn't worn out.

      @@justmechanicthings It depends on driving profile a lot (and person driving of course). I run a taxi service and our cars all do this mileage on the original clutch. Wont wear out if its seldom used.

    That engine is a piece of (albeit recent) motoring history. It needs to live on in another incarnation.

      It does. Anything 1.9 diesel is based on this block. Fiat VW Ford. It is the second most produced engine in history apparently.

      Agreed good engines should be saved, The shell is a rust bucket and beyond saving, but this would be great for a engine swap project

      @@nstarmore 5 years ago my new 108 puretech 1.2 blew up on a Asda car park. Spent 1/4 of the cars worth trying to see what was going on after going in limp mode, the dealer refered me to place in Wolverhampton for an engine rebuild. I could cry to this day. £800 for a catalytic converter to fix it..... NOPE. This that and the other. Nobody could diagnose it properly .I'm a proud owner of a 20 year old Corsa and I started with a 106 that I purchased for £70.

      It’s a terrible shame: engines are over complicated now. I had a 106 with the 1.1 TU petrol. It was a very reliable engine and an all round good little car.

    My Citroen ZX 1.9 TD had over 400,000 miles on it when the back axle etc passed away. 60+ mpg easily on the motorway at 70 mph cruising. When I changed the cam belt and set up the pump timing as per the workshop manual , it went like the clappers, was quieter,smoother and hardly any smoke. A pain to do but worth it. I know its never usually done even at the dealers. Did the same on a 2.5 VW lump and that made a difference too. The ZX being light and with great road holding you could disillusion lots of hot hatches by sticking with them on the twisties. My one regret is that I missed out on a one owner ZX 16v Volcane ..... if only.

      @@mazdaman1286 The Volcane had the older XU9 8v engine (same as the 205 GTi). The 16v was the quicker of the two but the Volcane was still a great drivers car.

Hours of fun Took the front seats our Steering column out then the dash(have to get the intercooler off to get at the bolts and hoses) Then split the heater box to swap a £9.96 core....fortunately no aircon then the hassle of lining up multiple brackets etc to slide it all back in. did it over a weekend.

    I love a pug 405. I have collected 10 in the last 12 yrs from all over the UK… all stashed safely for when retire next year to play with … an Executive, 2x STDT’s, 3x GTX’s, 4xGLX’s …. All TD bar one…

      In the 80,s I bought a 75 peugot 405 and drove it for several years while I lived in west virginia.Looking back it was great car that was comfortable and stylish.I also went through a couple of volvo 240,s.Could not wear them out but tired of them.

    We had an M reg 405 GLX TD estate in a peculiar greenish-blue. First decent car we had as a family after a long run of Ford rubbish. It had air con, that worked! Many happy memories of that car, first car I took an interest in. M183 PAJ, you are missed!

    We ran a Citroen Synergie for years with the same 1.9 XUD lump. It had 7 seats, a flat floor, slidy doors, tons of room and did everything without fail. Would easily do over 50mpg on veg oil, loaded with 2 adults, 3 kids, dog, roof box & packed to the gunnels with camping gear. Wished we kept it & sorted out the bodywork as it was part of the family.

      I also ran my XU9td on veg oil. Used from a mates burger bar, I simply let the food bits settle in the jug, decanted off the rest, filtered it through a pair of tights, and stuck it in the tank! Bosch injector pump only, lucasCAV were too weak, ran perfectly and smelled of chips 😂

    You can see why mini-cabbers loved these - and thats the reason you don't see more of them lol. I worked at a place where we used them as reps cars - 3yrs and 100k miles they were moved on and they fetched to dollar. Many of the reps would say it was madness to get rid as double that was well within remit

    Had x3 405 Peugeots , a 89 1.6 petrol, a 92 1.9D and a 94 1.9TD those diesel engines were brilliant especially TD (xud9) when PSA knew how to build an engine.

    Pretty impressive really i think the end of the good diesel was when the dpf come along. I mean some of them arent bad they are just too complicated. The older stuff is far superior.

      You are not wrong but even DPF cars can run very good and many miles without trouble if you got a good driving profile. In some ways, DPF cars can be even better because of newer technology construction of the engine and drivetrain in general.

      Agreed. Dpfs can be relatively trouble-free assuming that they have frequent good runs and not just town use or 2 mile trips.

      @@GoldenCroc oh yeh I agree. I had a 1.6 focus diesel 62 DPf I did over 100k in that car and being a young lad drove it hard. It never had an issue. The problem is when they do have an issue. My current car is a 2.0tdci smax pre DPf and it just works. It doesn't do lots of miles and because no DPf it doesn't matter and it doesn't care. A modern diesel wouldn't appreciate that that's why I believe that was the last of the good diesel that era. I mean the Vw pd absolutely superb engine bullet proof things. The modern stuff just ain't the same.

      @@HA05GER Well as I said I mostly agree, but if you got the favorable driving profile, dpf does 300k+ easily as well, and more. And as I alluded to, you can for example get a bit better fuel economy with the newer stuff if that matters. So in some regards its swings and roundabouts. But for ultimate reliability over all, yes the old stuff is better no doubt.

      @@GoldenCroc yeh my basis is more on reliability and I'd argue the economy is worse on the modern stuff. My smax will happily do 60mpg and up where as my focus would be in the 50s. It's a bigger car but doesn't have all the emissions stuff. Possibly been mapped which can make a difference but I've never done it but it's superb on fuel. I found the same with sprinters I used to drive them for a living, the older ones were better on fuel than the brand new ones. It's inevitable cars get heaving and with dpfs and so on require extra fuel to maintain these systems. Whether it be by running the engine hotter by injecting more.fuel to maintain the dpf or directly into the exhaust. Then you've got adblue to contend with which is notoriously temperamental even if a modern one is slightly more economical which I don't find them to be, your losing that in maintaining all this crap.

    They are really good engines! we had an skid steer loader on the farm which had an Kubota engine which failed at 5000hrs (headgasket) , & just happen thats my grand parents pevgeot 405 J reg turbo d had failed it MOT on the yard! We stuck the engine from the 405 into the skid steer loaded (all it did was turn an hydraulic pump) and revved in at 2000rpm , went on to do at least 3000hrs more before we sold it! (6000hrs is almost an equivalent to 120k miles give or take) we thought about putting a cambelt on it but we didn't ,
    The engine had over 180k when it was still in the car , it definitely needed it heat plugs working in the winter!
    The huge existing radiator within the machine meant it hardly ever reached its working temp!

    A buddy had one of those; petrol, 120 PS, automatic. 7,5 litres on 100 km (31 mpg). Absolutely beautiful and comfortable. I’m German but I prefer French cars… 🚗💨🇫🇷

    Insanity, I regret selling my Fiat Tipo 1.9TD everyday, it has more than 400.000 km now, luckily a friend of mine has it so I see it regularly, but what an amazing car, old diesel engines are almost immortal.

      @@maxeluy there's a Tipo 1.9TD still running around my neck of the woods. Coming off bends, being given some throttle, no smoke, just a little haze. Car looks great and runs well. Love to know it's mileage.

      Not all of them! I had a Pajero 2.3turbo diesel, and it died at 25000 miles. The rebuild lasted 250k. It produced a staggering 62kW.

    My first car was a phase 2 306, my current car is a late CX. Every time I have to drive something German, I want to be in a psa car again. Friends have asked me how 30ish year old cars are that much more comfortable than modern vehicles.

      @@TheBlaert Correct.. when i travel from Spain to Holland, no pain in the ass, its like sitting on the sofa at home, when i go with one of my newer cars, pain in the ass already at the spain / french border, and than still a 1500 km,s to go,,
      Also i can sleep comfy in the back with a matress from home.

    This glorious old rot box has survived the last 30 years at a average of about 11000 miles per year. It deserves a good send off. I reckon you should get as many RUclips car nerds as possible to road test it, document everything about the state of the bodywork/mechanicals/interior and the way it drives, before it finally gets scrapped.

      I had a 405 sri 1.9 petrol and I can honestly say, with my hand on my heart that it is the car I most regret getting rid of. I only did around 45k miles in it but they were the most comfortable and reliable miles that I have ever traveled.
      I bought it for £170 with a suspected head gasket failure. Turned out to be a tiny tiny pin hole in one of the heater matrix pipes just to one side of a jubilee clamp.

    We had two 405, a mk1 diesel saloon and a mk2 turbo diesel estate. Bloody loved them especially turbo. Fantastic engine.

    The 405 estate was the very 1st car i ever drove, at the age of 16 years old. It was a NA diesel, My dad took to his works carpark for a go. It was a great car, i nearly had it as a 1st car if he hadn't get shot, that year, for the peugeot 406 dturbo

    A friend had a 306 DT. He tuned the pump and the engine ripped from its mounts and it lunched the cambelt on a chassis leg. Monster.

    A long, past, and forgotten time when we french made reliable, cheap to maintain, and easy to use cars. And that 405 is in really good health. 92hp given by Peugeot, 90.4 measured. The XUD was a really strong engine.

    Had a 405 on G plate in 1989. Absolutely f'in loved it ! It was my first new car. Then had a 406 saloon, then a 406 coupe, then a 407 saloon and then a 407 coupe. All because of that 405 back in 1989. Lovely 👍

    A mate of mine had one of those 405 diesel wagons. Absolutely loved it, especially the 1000km plus range. Pity it broke the timing belt and snapped the cam into 3 pieces. Getting the replacement head and cam out to Australia was an expensive exercise. That one in the video is a ripper for the mileage. I hope it lives on in another car.

      When I worked at the pub dealers, we sold XU D camshaft to an engineering shop. They made new caps as they also snapped, line bored them, good as new, bet they don't do stuff like that any more, real shame, you could buy rebuilt heads for a fraction of a new one

    Peugeot diesels were the best then, I had a little 205 STDT and it was such fun in the wet, later 2.2 diesel 406, no wonder they were used for taxis.

    In about 2008 I had a ten year old Zx non turbo use to run mine on veg oil or sunflower oil for a bigger bang for my bucks that had over 300k on the clock the emissions were well under the mot standard great engines never missed a beat ❤

    Great! I had one of these 405 estate cars in London in the 90s it was awesome! Drove every day dragging my heavy tools around and the only time the engine quit was when I accidentally knocked my knee of the ignition key. Great engine, great car with super comfortable seats that I have not felt since

    I had an H registration. 1.8td, Estate, 370.000 miler.
    Bought it for £150 from a car auction, ex.taxi. in 2002.
    Refurbed the front suspension and top mounts. New water pump, and that was it.
    No rust, sun roof electrics were shot.
    Engine never missed a beat, never returned less than 40mpg, even when cruising over a certain speed limit on the motorway to Scotland from Northampton.
    Ran it for 2 years and sold it for £250, which I wished I hadn't.
    One of the best cars I owned.

      @@SDRIFTERAbdlmounaim It's the Hubnut (Ian) Citroen Berlingo. Lots of silly comments about fitting the XUD into it, but with HDi fixed and properly running (likely a set of new or refurb injectors) and it'll be better than the XUD could ever hope to be.

    Love those xud engines, learned to drive in a xantia with one in. I then had a xsara Picasso with the 2.0 hdi! My fave car ever. It was so reliable and comfortable. I got the clock to 250,000 miles and it was still on the original HP pump, injectors, head gasket, turbo and clutch. Few cambelts, water pumps and oil and filter changes and she just kept on going!

      Back in 2006 I bought a 405 GTX TDi with the xud engine.it was the estate in metallic grey.
      Did a few trips to Portugal in it and it never missed a beat and being the top spec it was very comfortable and very quick.

    I am a cabbie and have been for almost 30 years. back in 1990, my parents started a cab firm and we ran a fleet of Peugeot 405's. All in all, they were good cars that usually lasted about 250-300k but the autos were crap and the bodies were very light and prone to denting. The best car of that generation for tanking miles was in my opinion the cavalier 1.7 ls td. That isuzu lump just never gave up! nowadays I run superbs and my last 2 made 420 000 miles (killed off in a crash and 348700, (cambelt taken out by an aux belt failure. ) I laugh when people tell me that their cars worn out at 100k... barely run in...

      @@1maico1 Diesel all the way, the 1.6 is where you go if you want the best mpg--70+ on a long haul while the 2litre is almost as good but gives you plenty of oomph when you want it. I have had both and both were excellent reliable engines. They really dont seem to have any major problems beyond the usual DPF and EGR aggro.

    Those older Peugeots 405 and 406's were great and comfortable machines. They missed a trick not continuing going for comfort over rock hard suspension so many cars have now.

    After I was forced to give up my Escort RS Turbo before it fell to bits, I was gifted one of these (sport trim) as a company car. It was so good with the aircon on that if you were heading up a dual carriageway, let's call it the A69, you had to plan your manoeuvre in advance to pass a truck, because if the aircon kicked in at the wrong moment you were hosed. It got nicked from outside the house one night, and I only noticed because I ran for the bus to town through the gap where I'd parked it. My replacement for that was a normally aspirated 405. Cursed.

    I had an 1.9 TD Xsara (300 000 km) as my first car. She never let me down, would always start right up, had all the torque you'd need. I have since then swapped to a Xsara VTS with the glorious 2.0 RFS engine as my summer car but some days I miss the simple carefree 1.9 TD.

    My 406 1.9 dt had 360000 miles when I sold it. It was probably the best car I ever owned. I used to cruise it at over 100mph on the continent. Handled great too. All I did was routine maintenance.

    I'm a 405 fanatic. I've owned 8 of them over the years and still have a Phase 1 Mi16.
    Out of them all the Turbo D's were the ones that gave me most problems and that was due to porosity in the heads. Of the three Turbo D's I owned two of them were very close to each other in chassis numbers, and sure enough both had porous heads. The 3rd one was fine and it racked up massive miles with no issues.
    There was a story that a huge amount of 1995 cars (like mine) had porous heads

    My father opened up the engine of a 2.1 diesel citroen xm, with
    1180 000 km.
    the cranck and conecting rods were beefy, the main bearings looked really good, the cylinders looked like new, no wear.
    My father had previous replaced the hydralic lifters at 650 000 km. The turbo was also replaced once.

    I had an '89 405 Estate but with the 1.9 petrol engine, it had covered 380,000 miles, still on the original clutch, when I traded it in against a '97 406 TD Estate. It was a bit fumey if you got stuck in traffic but still very nice to drive and everything still worked. The 406 went on to do 265,000 and apart from regular servicing and consumables it never cost me a penny, I needed a van so it had to go, it looked and drove like a 60,000 car! The two best cars I ever owned, I'd love a clean low mileage 406 estate again.

    Hi, you quoted the current HP figure being 2hp down on the claimed factory standard output.
    When the car was certified, the manufacturer was allowed to use very cold chilled air and also to remove the PAS pump/ ABS pumps / alternators / vacuum pumps on dyno runs.
    The EU stopped most of that nonsense.
    You do not know if that sample was producing the claimed figure when new.
    In summary, a massive mileage engine that still produces superb power.

      Appreciate the comment, but I don't agree. The original figures used DIN correction factors, the same as this. In cold climates the engines may well produce more than 100bhp; in the Sahara...less than 85bhp? The correction factor was specifically brought in to mitigate these differences, including the variation in WHP losses between manual/auto transmissions; air pressure; air temperature; ancillaries etc.
      SAE figures may well be closer to what you're suggesting as they were engine-only, but DIN was a Euro-centric standard that all manufacturers who sold cars in the EU (and many outside it) adhered to, and it was designed to set a universal standard from which all situations would suit all cars.

    I had an L reg 306 XTtD some years ago with the same 1.9 XUD tD engine.
    It was an epic car with plenty of kit and a lot of comfort.
    One of very few diesel cars that I rated.

    Those old XUDs were brilliant, especially the early non Lucas Bosch pumped ones. I once drove through a flood (had a high mounted airfilter) and filled the bores with water. Glow plugs removed Pushed it down a hill, bump start and off she went. Miss the simplicity but not the smoke

    Had two of these back in in the day, awesome cars. The last one had been remapped and was surprisingly quick. Was on 155k when I sold it, just nicely run it. So much better than the 406 that I replaced it with...Great video, thanks!

    I have a 2022 Citroën Spacetourer van hdi with just over 180bhp and i must say the thing really really shifts!!! I also have a 1989 Peugeot 405 1.9 sri which I have owned from new and is in showroom condition and has only 22,000 miles on the clock from new. I hardly ever drove it as iv always had vans so have used those instead...

    I've had several pug oilers, xud7, 9 d and td. Best motor ever! Ran a 405td with a Bosch pump, on used veg oil for a year without issue, that one also rotted away, scrapped with a perfect engine. The XU has to be one of the best engines ever 😍

    I had a 1999 406 2.0 HDi 110. Bought it at 60k, sold it at 120k. 70mpg+ on the motorway, beautiful beige interior, armchair of a front seat, climate controlled, never let me down. Cracking car.

    I brought a new Peugeot 306 XRDT 1.9DT in 1994 and it blew a head gasket at just under 400K kilometres which really disappointed me because it was a fantastic car and it had great motor. It was still returning 5.3l/100km or 53.3 MPG. I'm not sure new cars do that. Great video - thanks.

    The throttle response in modern cars is more of a suggestion and then you have to file a request with your local council for it to return to idle it takes taht long.

    I have just spent most of this video screaming in my head "what pump does it have?" Lol.
    Bosch pump. Not surprised as I had one on my 96 306 Dturbo. They're considered superior to the Lucas pump if you want to tune them. I miss the clatter of these engines. I currently have a 2007 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi which is another pug lump. 230k and the engine still goes really well, on the original clutch, DPF, and it has been tuned in my ownership.

    Love these old diesels and I think as many of them should be saved as possible. That way they will outlive us.
    I run a 3.0TDI A6. Owned it since new from 2006. It’s at 94,000 miles now and not even close to half way through its life. No rust and still runs and drives like the day it was new. I will keep driving it until it won’t move forward under its own power. Hopefully still decades away. Best car I’ve ever owned and spent less than £2k on parts for it in almost 18 years….excluding tyres and brakes. Electric vehicles have a long way to go to make them as good as these cars and personally I don’t think I they’ll ever get there.

    My memories of the Peugeot 405 are mostly of the non turbo diesel. Which seemed awful when compared with the 150bhp Honda I usually drove at the time. I suspect a 405 Mi16 would be more to my taste. But respect to PSA for building an engine that still does the business after 30 years and 300,000 miles.

    235k miles on my old Civic 2.2 iCTDi and it was still delivering the same mpg (53) and power as the 60k miles 2.2 Civic iDTEC I replaced it with. Both remapped to 190bhp 300 ftlbs torque.

    Many car manufacturers were at the top of their game in the seventies through nineties, whether it's Toyota, Mazda, Honda, M-B, VW, PSA,... Cars that could run forever if you took care of them. They put the quality of their product above profit and now it's the other way around.

    my first car was 96' Xantia SW 1.9TD with 91HP , but it exploded 2 engines (2 times exploded rod on n1 cylinder) . The 95's where know to be bullet proof and run forever , and seems that the 97's were modified and dont explode anymore

    Its got a Bosch pump so easily tuneable and can run pretty much on everything (veg,kero,oil). You can give it another 30hp in an hour by tuning the pump and adjusting the waste gate on the turbo. Only basic tools required.
