Almost as bad as draining the oil out of the engine in your daily transport at 7pm and then discovering you don't have enough of the right type left to even wet the dipstick. At least it was only 40 miles around via the nearest supplier of oil, rather than trying to fill a gearbox through the drain plug...
Awesome! I've got a dumpit which looks identical to Dumpit Prime but mine is a 2000 year. Got it cheap as an MOT fail and fixing it up. These videos will no doubt be useful to me, in addition to me loving your videos anyway. Folks - if you've never experienced a 106, even the basic ones like dumpit, you've missed out.
@@UPnDOWN Mine's somehow quite clean underneath, for it's age. I'll be getting under it and hopefully treating what rust is there over time. I can't believe it's almost 25 years old. They'll always be timeless in my eyes
I once had a Standard 10 (horrible little car) with a gear lever with so much play, if you had a passenger you had to know them really well before changing into second.
Good work - so glad Dumpit's stick is no longer loose and floppy. Doubtless all of that lubricant will enhance the user experience too. I'm sure the missing gearbox filler plug magnet will be safely stuck inside the gearbox somewhere...
down in Dorset this week. Used to live here for a while. I look at it through the prism of football and the extent of the animosity between Saints and Pompey is not understood across the wider nation
New subscriber here. I've been living in Australia from the UK too long I have forgotten how things rust in the UK. My 23 year old MX5 hasn't a spot on it thanks to the climate here.
Great little tinkering video Rich, have to say there is something about smaller engines cars being drivers cars, maybe it's the fact you can drive them hard on your favourite road all within the speed limit, modern cars just too much driver assistance to spoil the fun!
You could have these plastic bushings 3D-printed. Or better, have a machinist turn them in bronze? about the MIC. Maybe try a Bluetooth connected MIC? I use a Comset on my motorbike for handsfree phonecalls and it works exactly like that and is pretty reliable.
Getting the drain plug off first without checking the filler one comes undone beforehand can leave you with an empty gearbox you then cannot get refilled. Had this with my early Range Rover, a 20minute job ended up with a dead car blocking up the drive for a couple of days until I eventually managed to get the filler undone.
@@iainmacrae6982 My Peugeot Expert is like that on purpose - there's no fill plug. It has to be drained then refilled with 1.9 litres of 75W90 via the breather on the top, which takes bloody ages.
Yep correct. In the more common ML gearbox's, incorrect gearbox oil makes the gearchanges absolutely horrible. Crunchy and impossible to get 1st when cold. Bought a pug on the cheap from a dealer because DMF/Clutch was replaced but gearbox was crunchy. Replaced the gearbox oil on a whim... took a couple hundred miles and now it's silky smooth... until 100k miles later when it needed a change!
Had a Xsara with the same issue, didn't get around fixing it since I had already gotten used to a similar tasting bowl on a 1974 Sunbeam Avenger which I still have.
Do you think adding all that grease to the exposed gear linkage will just attract dust and dirt and cause premature wear? Shouldn't the plastic joint be self lubricating?
Back in't day my wife had a 2000 x 306 1.4, the gear change on that was awful! Mind it had done 170000 mls by the time it got nicked a 9 yrs old 😂. She still misses that car to this day, her first new car which was an upgrade from the 4 speed 93 micra😂
Might be a dumb question but what rolling pin did you get? Does it have a Peugeot part number? This video popped up and it immediately got me excited about fixing the player on my 106 Rallye gearchange!
I thought it might have stupid ping pong ball thing in the linkage like my ex employer old citroen berlingo. Sloppy as anything and it used to pop out for fun. Had to drive the damn thing stuck in 4th for about 50miles and i live realitively rural so thst was fun.😂
Check the rear brakes out on it: I bet on a mot roller they’ll be 50 kgs max with a massive imbalance. I have that problem on my Rallye, so if you could oblige as to how to fix it I’d be grateful- ta!
I am maintaining my girlfriend's 33 y.o. 205 with the same engine... I guess that Peogeot made 106 from 205 by using cheaper parts and no charm from it.
Is this Peugeot content proving more popular than the Citroen stuff? Asking for a friend... VED is ridiculous for a car of this age and engine, driving more and more decent, small and economical cars off the roads.
Dumpit is lot more of driver's car than most what's sold these days..
Now there’s a confident man, draining the oil before undoing the fill plug. I did it once……😂😂
Confident is one way of describing it 😂

Most important thing to be wary of is rust, without a doubt.

Nice work. My Pug 206 has the same wibbly-wobbly gear change so I'm going to check the same bits over the weekend.
I once had a Standard 10 (horrible little car) with a gear lever with so much play, if you had a passenger you had to know them really well before changing into second.
Enjoyable and instructive, with usual good humour. Excellent stuff.
I like that socket with the bendy end, looks super useful.
Loving your new "There was a wasp on my foot" catchphrase. Such a classic!
My 106 has exactly this problem and has had for many years. Going to have to get it sorted now!
What's the part number of the gear linkage bushing at 6:24? Can't find it anywhere..

Great stuff Rich, I’m liking this channel more and more.
I enjoy Dumpit content. Really liking the channel; your delivery is brilliant
Good to know! When getting my 1.1 205 back on the road, these will be on the to-do list.
Thanks
Thank you Mr Pisswhistle, that's very kind!

nice to see you continue to sort out the minor irritations. did you change the cambelt yet?
You could have these plastic bushings 3D-printed. Or better, have a machinist turn them in bronze?

The ferry to France is the best thing about Portsmouth 😂

I usually check the fill plug before draining just in case it's seized or rounded!!
I was confident in Dumpit's compliance
@@UPnDOWNnever ever happened in 45 yrs to me but always comments on it
Can just fill it through the breather or the reverse switch

gotta love how easy to work on the 106s are, doing shifter on my 406 coupe makes you disasemble the whole underneith

them gearboxes are known for that play in the lever, sort that with a welder was the most common way to sort it back in the day
Educational and entertaining as ever Rich.

Wondering if the smaller engine petrol 106's suffer the same issue as my Dad's diesel one did, namely bouncing out of 5th gear on country roads?
bless you!

I had that same problem in my uno. It got so bad thar reverse was in the next seat and 1 was in the stereo.
Dumpit is definitely a drivers car, with a gearshift now like race car.
you should give dumpet a new run on the dyno to see if the thinner gearbox oil made any power diffrence hence thinner oil gives less resistance
Haha! Every little counts?
Can you still get an aftermarket quick shift selector for these?.. If so, worth investing?
4:15 Yeah I know 🇪🇺
Do you have a link for the bush you bought? Thanks
Lol "bush"

Think I found it; part no. 250924, gonna try this fix + uprated bushing kit somewhere in the next couple of weeks
Dumpit is a drivers car.....shut up....
It's like you knew we burst out laughing at that moment! 😂😂😂
Dumpit is a tad surfacely rusty underneath. Any plans to treat her (him?) with olive oil or old engine oil? 😃

Is it ok after that thrashing from Alex ? 🤣
most definitely drivers car compared to all modern 'car drives itself' rubbish

If it is fun to drive, then by definition, it is a drivers car.
