Their harmony was always on point. One of the best 80's Girl Groups!
One of Rick James' final appearances was at a Mary Jane girls performance where he met up with his long time musical right hand bass player Oscar Alston. James took Alston's young daughter aside, pointed at her father and said "See that man over there, he's responsible for all the success I had!" A few days later Rick James was dead, but in his final open appearance he gave Oscar Alston all the credit.

Oh! 💃 I loved this one soooo much! Had my boom box/jam box with a blank cassette.. ready to hit record as soon as something came on the radio! I FINALLY caught this one from the very beginning to the end! And the cassette didn’t randomly stop before the song ended ...cause at times I’d misjudge how much space was left on my blank cassette.. oh that made for a bad day.. 😒 lol. This song and soooo many others- those homemade mixed tapes were EVERYTHING in the 80’s! I miss those days sooo much- you didn’t have all of this at your fingertips..BUT you were soooo happy and more appreciative when things worked out and you could listen to your favorites over and over! 💝👍✌️

Rick James created The Mary Jane Girls and was his answer to Prince's girl group Vanity 6. James and Prince had a long history of rivalry. Whatever Prince did James thought he could do better. Only one girl of The Mary Jane Girls actually sung, the other three were only there for style and appearence. In My House made the notorious "Filthy 15" list in 1985 created by Parents Music Resource Center in order to "protect" children from sexually implied music or songs with drug related themes. You should react to In My House's companion piece Sugar Walls by Sheena Easton. Another song that made the "Filthy 15".
Sincerely, K.S.O. has actually done a reaction to 'Sugar Walls' (I requested it via her site) - but it is blocked on RUclips, and is only viewable via her Patreon page. Rick was to them what Prince was to Vanity 6. These Ladies in my opinion The "Original" Spice Girls. They did all of the Shows from American Bandstand, Soul Train, and Solid Gold. They appeared also on Top Of The Pops (UK) which is Britian's longest running Music Show. Other US Acts who appeared on the Show were The Jets, and The Jackson Five. If you are a UK Pop Star and you did Top Of The Pops, you had arrived!

You should see if you can find an album by a group called Tamara and the Seen from around the same time. The whole album was great. Everybody Dance, Got to have you, Long cold nights are stand outs. I can't remember the title of the album but it's very good.

i want to say that Ric Brown/James was the driving force behind Mary Jane Girls but i could be wrong but it does sound like his sound, and those ladies were definitely his type however any ladies that were breathing was his type (actually they did not have to breathe, oops that might be a bit crass since he is no longer with us but i am sure Ric brown/James is laughing at that joke anyway)
