  • This video is a must watch! "Fire Breathing Monsters" is an aggressive and noisy -- yet surprisingly intimate -- tribute to the cars that run in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series. Commissioned by Jim Jannard, founder of RED Digital Cinema, on behalf of the NHRA, this seven-minute documentary spotlights the uniquely American passion for speed.

    When you tell people who have never seen these cars live that they shake the ground they think it's just an expression. It isn't.

    When NHRA comes to Sonoma, Calif, we found out using cell phones that it takes 28 seconds for the Top Fuel sound to go the 9 miles to our house. We brought a boy who was deaf from birth to the stands by the starting line and it put a giant smile on his face. He covered his ears and in sign language said that it felt like bugs were going in his ears. We saw John Force in the pits starting up the dragster after the rebuild and the boy signed that the nitro smelled like the Devil's breath. John waved to him and it made the boy's day for sure.

      @@donaldwoods3618 Have been to Charlotte twice for 2 runnings of the Coca Cola 600, and enjoyed and appreciated the power and thunder of that. Haven't been to a drag race yet. But for the sheer visceral power that can be felt, I spent many an off duty break watching F14's launch off the USS Ranger from SoCal to the North Arabian Sea to the South China Sea. Foam earplugs supplemented by David Clark mickey mouse ears barely does the job saving the eardrums. The power literally reverbs through your bones. Always gave me a hard on. So I can definitely relate to what top fuel drag racing must be like.

    The best short on my sport that I've ever seen. While there is NO WAY to feel a drag race this way, it gets the heart and mind together. Those that have never been to a race might go based on this short. It captures the characters and the sights of what this sport is all about. If it brings them to a race, then they will FEEL a drag race. That is the visceral part that cannot translate with this medium. The smells and the power. Once you feel two cars at full bore at about 3/4 track you will begin to understand the wonder of Nitro Drag Racing.

    I love how there's a gap between when the butterflies open fully and the throttle hits and the sound wave comes. It's like you see them open up and it's a fraction of a millisecond of "here it goes." And then you hear the BOOOOM. It's not even noticeable in real time, but in slo mo, it's amazing.

And i may be young but the passion for drag racing never stays young or gets old. I Love when my Dad takes me to Bandimere And we get the tickets while the cars are driving. you realize that you were perceiving fraction of seconds and watching little things happening. the adrenaline makes you happy and blind at the time of it. but after you remember seeing and feeling thousands of things all within 4 seconds. you realize how much joy you can feel in such a small amount of time

    Öne of the best parts about dragracing, is also to build the racer, all of those nights i've been putting into my machine, getting help from friends and family...
    It's also pretty fun to see every teams advancement year after year ;) How you always try to make the machine a little lighter, a bit faster and pull a bit more...

    wife & I were fishing one Sunday on the Mississippi River, Iowa side. over a mile across the river, near Port Byron, we could barely hear the gas dragsters when they lit up. Later the Top Fuels raced, making it so loud that we couldn't even hear ourselves shouting at each other. That sound coming across the water was absolutely deafening.

    I was at a national event in Ennis Tx some years ago. Bought a white Nitro Fish t-shirt. That evening we went to a local Braum's ice cream store to grab a burger. When I looked in the mirror as I was washing up I discovered my face and the entire shirt was black speckled. Figured it was rubber from the burnouts cause I stood across from the tree next to the fence all day. Awesome!

    I was just at Pomona yesterday for the qualifying and it was nothing like anything else in this world. It's zero to holy crap in 3.7 seconds at over 330 mph, and to feel the force generated by those machines is insane. From Top Fuel dragster all the way to pro stock motorcycle these guys have a ton of balls to strap themselves in and launch themselves down the quarter mile in less time it takes me to say "wow". I will never forget my experience at this years Winternationals at Pomona, it's something I hope I get to share with my kids and I will take it with me when I get to heaven.

    These things are fighter jets without wings.I’d even go as far to say that in a 1/4 mile that they are actually quicker than a FA 18.

    • @scottalanclymer
      @scottalanclymer 4 года назад +5

      Yes, by far quicker than the US Navy can throw a F14 / F18 off a catapult. Twice as fast.
      Instead of deploying a parachute, if these cars could deploy wings crossing the finish line at 330 mph, they could climb to 2 thousand feet in short order, and glide for several miles.

    Isle of man is only a hundred mph slower and they go through city streets with stone walls and trees on motorcycles and sidecars. Kinda makes a straight line less extreme when you compare the two. I'm honestly more impressed with the crew than the drivers with this sort of racing. Real MVPs.

      You absolutely should go to an event some time. Especially at Charlotte, NC or Vegas. Standing down by the starting line when 4-wide Top Fuel dragsters launch is a life changing experience. Although dont expect you'd ever get to be down on the tarmac during a race, I was only able to bc my uncle used to work at zMax Dragway in Charlotte. But even being in the stands at one of those tracks is amazing, definitely go to one next year
