Clash Landing on You made it clear the story could not work if both leads were not from the highest classes in their respective countries. The male lead character, Ri Jeong Hyeok, was part of the highest class in North Korea as was the female lead, Yoon Seri, the highest class in South Korea. If she met any other soldier, Yoon Seri, would have died right away. So, the whole story was based on their privilege and how different they were from both North Koreans and South Koreans. This is why their relationship was possible to continue in Switzerland.
CLOY also showed the poverty in North Korea and the big number of orphan children who struggled to survive. The drama tried to stay away from politics, because the two countries are still at war. They did a great job humanizing North Koreans who have been vilified just because of the dictatorship they live under. It showed how misinformed North Koreans were of South Koreans as well as how South Koreans were misinformed of North Koreans. But what I liked the most about this show is how it emphasized that North Koreans and South Koreans are one people divided by political powers. CLOY is so far the best advocate for unification of the Korean Peninsula.

To be fair, Yoon Se-ri is also the complete opposite of the normal average woman in South Korea. She's like the Korean Paris Hilton lifestyle wise. So both main leads are the prince and princess of their nations basically, not representations of normal people. BUT I'm glad that apart from that, a lot of other details on DPRK are actually true! Those electricity blackouts were for me the biggest surprise. What I wanna know is how realistic Alberto Gu is! I think whats interesting is that Ri jeong Hyuk lives a pretty modest life compared to the average south korean but even the modest little house he has may be considered a massive luxury in North Korea and his parents house is a straight up palace. so i think they were trying to show what privilege in north korea looks like. he has the privilege to leave north korea for two weeks every year but not everyone has that kind of power. and i think thats why his group of soldier friends are so important to the show. the friends and their backstories show what how the truly average north korean would react to arriving in Seri's giant luxury apartment. she's basically living like a literal queen by their standards.

I speak for close friends from childhood that I met in Brazil, friends that were able to leave Yemen, one thing they said, is that their people have happy times and live life to the fullest... Since they don’t know when it can end. They don’t have internet, and phones, and they have a life with family and friends dying all the time. But when they get to enjoy times with those people, they LIVE those times. They are, to this day, the happiest people that party the hardest. Great review, Yeonmi! I finished watching it yesterday. What I liked is that there is not much focus on politics, but in the human point of view. This k-drama shows all the struggles that north koreans have to deal in their daily life, but also shows that they are all people like us, lovely, kindly, helpful, despite of the Kim dictators. They show both the poverty and lack of freedom on the north side, but also focus on the luxury and selfishness from the southern. And the ending was pretty nice, too: I thought Jeong Hyeok would stay on South Korea, but he managed to nurture the relationship on Switzerland, a neutral country for both of them. Good and respectful to both countries!

Hello Yeonmi . I just got your book the other day and it's so good and inspiring.
I'm still on chapter 4 but it breaks my heart to see how many Nort Koreans have to bear such hard laws and do hard work just for so they can put food on their family's table. I'm so heartbroken for the life you had to go through and other people still go through it. I pray to god that it ends soon. Thank you so much for your great story.

I think that was a fair assessment of the show. I just finished watching it recently and very much enjoyed it. Having read a lot and heard North Korean refugees speak, I was very aware of what North Korea was like. The life of villagers seemed to be portrayed closely to reality. One of the things that shocked me was how long North Korean men have to serve in the military compared to South Korean men. The disinformation about South Korea (and the US) being the "imperialist empire" seemed pretty accurate as well. Of course some of it is going to be stretching the truth, that is to be expected for TV. The people behind the program did a good job balancing the use of propaganda while at the same time not over doing it. I thought the series was very well done.

Just found this video. One great thing about CLOY is it peaked my curiosity about North Korea. I have always been curious, but I used that motivation to do quite a bit of reading and learning. Eventually even bought Yeonmi’s book and followed this channel. So Crash Landing inspired this American to learn something.

Just finished the drama and I was really pleased with it!
Actually, when I was watching it, I assumed that there was some restrictions to how truthful they could be about North Korea- they probably didn't want to create any tension my making the drama show all the poverty etc.

I saw a few episodes of this show and knew it was showing a romanticized, non-political version of North Korea. It was so valuable to hear Yeonmi discuss it in detail here and bring all her perspectives into it. My first worry immediately upon watching the show was that it would widely promote a falsely wholesome and well-to-do image of regular life in the DPRK.

My wife is a Korean Drama addict and she insists that I must watch the shows with her. Crashlanding on you was one series we watched together. I found the show improbable especially how people seemed to come and go from Nth Korea to the rest of the world and how one of the show's characters who was 'hiding' in Nth Korea because of a crooked deal he made with Se Ri Yoon's brother in Seoul. Never the less I did enjoy the show to an extent. The drama part was a bit too much though. All the tears that were shed!!! It was a river but it also had very funny parts in it too. Thank you for your wonderful RUclips show. I watch your episodes religiously and I really wish that one glorious day that North and South Korea can reunite into one democratic country and live together joyfully and in peace.

What confuses me is the end. They did not end up living happily together. The end was that they only can neet two weeks in secret in Switzerland every year. So he stays in North Korea all the time and only come to Switzerland for two weeks a year like her? As far as I understood. But tgat is not so important.
Tank you so much for clearing up what is a rather true level about the things shown in the show regarding in North Korea and being so brave to talk about it. Please stay healthy and all the good wishes for you, Yeonmi 🍀☀️

    • @aurorahypnotherapy3674
      @aurorahypnotherapy3674 3 года назад

Well as long as the two Koreas are separated they cannot live happily ever after together. Ri cannot leave North Korea for more than 2 weeks per year as if he did his whole family would most probably be executed or at least imprisoned. And Seri would end up in prison of she went to North Korea probably by being accused of being s spy. They got as much happy ending as it gets.

Hi, I love your channel cos it raised awareness on what's happening on diff part of the world.
If I may, I want to recommend watching "Doctor Stranger" (if you got time), it's about a man born in Sokor raised in NorKor studied medicine & later become defactor and came back to his home country after so many hardships.
my first time watching it, some details I cannot understand (I often thought some scenes are overreacting. But got a great story), but watching your channel makes me understand the background and scenes of this drama.
I don't know how on point this drama is, but I can see some things you describe of what's happening in north korea on this drama.

Hi Yeonmi, could you also explain the language part of the series ? Did they speak in South Korean during the whole show? As you said the word ‘love’ doesn’t exist in North Korea; but in the show North Koreans are using the word love (e.g the North Korean fiancé of the officer uses it). Thank you! Also did the actors playing North Koreans characters try to have a North Korean accent or do they all speak with their South Korean accent? Thank you!
