Your right. A double weld doesn’t guarantee a water tight seal unless you X-ray the welds. But that’s costly. Also if you noticed, the vertical welds were being done down hill. Any welder knows what that means. Slag runs into the weld area meaning no penetration. Might as well use superglue. I’m in excavation. Mass earth, a sump pump isn’t needed if they install a drain field. Like a sewer system. Their excavator operator “expert” sucks to. I’ve fired better

There is one small area for a tv that maybe 6 or 7 people could watch at the same time. Aside from eating for only 12 people at a time you would have to spend the rest of your time in your bunk.

@@everythingluxury7 Sand melts at about roughly 1700°C (3090°F). Assuming that that nuclear air burst produces heat that is present long enough, and penetrating deep enough into the ground to melt sand deep enough to cause a problem using an escape trunk filled with sand (say a foot or so).... it is also going to be heating the ground one or two hundred feet away, deep enough to turn that bunker into an oven. Even if the temperature in the bunker "ONLY" rises to a tenth of that temperature (309 degrees F).... that's basically the temperature to bake a turkey at. And people will start dying of heat stroke within a very short period of time. The highest reported core body temperature in a patient who survived without permanent residual deficits was 46.5°C (115.7°F). This 52-year-old patient suffered from environmental heatstroke, and received medical treatment, including removal from the hot area they were in. There's no removing someone form this bunker to a cooler spot.
On the other hand.... that presupposes that the bunker is pretty damned close to ground zero, in order to be that close to a nuclear blast. The bunkers in this video do not appear to be very close to any strategic target so that fireball should not be a factor.... just maybe a brief forest fire burning over the bunkers. which should not be a problem. All the folks have to worry most likely are: 1. The US government requisitioning it, 2. roving gangs of people looking to help themselves to whatever is inside, 3.Fallout, 4. sickness spreading rapidly in the closed environment of the bunkers; 5 incompatible occupants knifing each other or worse. 6) unplanned for guests draining prep supplies, and , as mentioned in another comment, a really messy Taco Tuesday aftermath.

3 toilets. And there was a grinder/pump to discharge to the septic tank. It’s labelled “septic discharge” on the wall. My uncle’s on a septic system out in the country, and he only gets his solids pumped out every 5 years. And it’s a survival bunker, not a holiday RV.

@@SmokingSevens How many people are "discharging" to your uncle's septic system? 2? 6? I bet a whole heck of a lot less than 24. What are the comparative sizes of the septic tanks and septic drain fields? I know some folks who end up having their septic pumped every quarter!
Was it a manual grinder pump? Let's see... 24 people, using toilet four times a day on average.... (assuming that many people are older/ or maybe experiencing some gastric distress due to a change in diet to survival food.... or maybe radiation poisoning). (Or come down with some bug from a whole bunch of stressed-out people in very, very tight quarters; everybody in my Navy boot camp company came down with some sort of gastro-intestinal bug, I understand that that and upper respiratory infections are common in such situations. ) Anyway, that comes out to a toilet being used every 15 minutes. If it's electric grinder pump, that's a heck of a lot of electrical power usage in a situation where there may be limited power available. Was there a spare? If you removed the pump to install spare.... what drains back?

I'd also want it on or near a slope where the ground water can drain by gravity so no need for sump pumps that can fail and need replacement, that way it can sit a decade without power and will still be dry! Also, if they can't find it they can't damage it!

Don't bother, these are really bad by European standards. A much better plan:
      1) Dig big hole
      2) Pour concrete base
      3) Weld some 3/4/5 mm steel sheets in place for the bunker
      4) Pour the concrete walls and roof
It costs way less, is way stronger and will last centuries longer than these thin pipes in earth.

The point of an Atlas shelter is for it to provide you with the absolute best protection while still feeling like home.

      @tstuff 2 года назад +9

@@disposabull Actually the arc shape is far stronger structurally than a flat box shape you are suggesting. And that "thin pipe" is at least 5mm thick.
      So what you see here:
      1)dig big hole - Done
      2) concrete slab - Done
      3) 5mm metal sheets welded together - Done with an arc shape which is better
      4) pour concrete - Why? The compacted rock and dirt provides sufficient support in keeping everything stable around it.
These "culverts" are used in some very heavy traffic roads and bridges and they can last for longer than most people live. All that extra welding and concrete is not going to save any money.

      @disposabull 2 года назад +14

Go look at images of culvert collapse, go look at colin furze's bunker build on youtube.
That build cost about 30k, a fraction of what an atlas bunker costs and it is structurally way, way better. (still needs a proper blast door on it though)
Please try to get your head out around the concept that in Europe we have multiple countries that require bunker capacity for the entire population, Switzerland has capacity for 130% of it's population.
We have millions of them (not exaggerating) and they are big chunky reinforced concrete with a thick blast door.

JUST AN OBSERVATION : seems like these shelters need a 3rd point of entry / exit. Both the main entrance and the emergency exit are in a direct line from the site, and relatively close to the bunker. Perhaps another line of escape could be run from the existing lines, and exit above ground at a DISTANCE from the bunker. I'm thinking some kind of hidden entrance - maybe disguised as a rock formation - and at least 100 feet from the bunker. That way, if a landslide or tree fall blocked the bunker area, the #3 port would still operate.

Also nice that the single shower for 24 people has a clear glass door situated at the entrance to the living quarters!
Seriously though, it makes me curious about the design parameters for the installation. Based on water capacity and living space I'd suppose that at design occupancy it's probably intended for no more than a couple days. Sufficient for most fallout to drop out or to wait out an unmotivated attacker, but not much use in a pandemic.
That's just my guess though, would be interesting to hear more from the designer how they spec different configurations for duration of occupancy, especially with respect to consumables like water and fuel. With flush toilets (no waterless urine disposal) and a shower the water consumption per person is going to be at least 10 gallons per day, more if they aren't careful with the shower. Presumably additional water and fuel stores can be added above-ground and plumbed in, but I've never heard them talk about that.
Edit: I forgot about the well, once that's added I suppose the limit is fuel capacity. Solar up on the building roof would address that in all but the most extreme situations. With water and power the limits are probably sufficient for most any purpose.

Most of the Atlas Bunkers must use a macerator-ejector system and pipe it into a city or septic system on the property. A German company called Wilo makes a smaller system for home use when you don't want to breaks up concrete in an existing basement to add a toilet, shower and sink. From what I last priced they were around $600 but that is a third of the cost to bring a plumber and tear out half of your basements concrete to add drains.

@@Subgunman I know they make different types of "pumps", macerators and the like for getting the waste out. Its just that I've never heard Ron talk about hooking anything up and he goes into "great" detail about all the other piping hook ups. I'm just a little surprised he never talks about it.

For those commenting on the escape tunnels please remember that they said they were going to build a building on top of these bunkers. With that in mind the escape hatches (and air piping) can come up anywhere in the house or building. Behind false walls, cupboards, closets, fake fireplace, etc. Let your imagine run wild and that is probably what these people are doing. If they can drop $500k on just the bunker you can imagine that the upper structure will also be awesome.

@@enargy5890 You've heard of Cheyenne Mountain, where NORAD is stationed? It's under a mile of solid granite, yet it was obsolete before construction was even completed. Hydrogen bombs create fireballs that can be miles in diameter burning at millions of degrees, even if a bomb were to miss by half a mile(it won't) it would still destroy it completely.
Say you build your pressurized underground bunker with an unlimited supply of power, air, water, food etc and you're not near enough to be killed by the thermal pulse, the overpressure of the blast, or the radiation which will be at its most lethal in the weeks following the blast... will any of your exits to the top even open? What if a house collapsed on top of them, or tons of concrete were blown onto them?
This is without mentioning Strontium-90 or the fact that there will be more than 100 nuclear power plants around the world melting down for the next few millennia and poisoning our world even further. Nuclear war is game over human race, to think otherwise is a dangerous delusion.

    • @AtlasSurvivalShelters

You may be wrong on the 8 inches of dirt...But definitely dead on with the second statement. Especially with a place like this where they are going to build on top of the entire bunker system afterwards. Build the basement with a partition. From the main basement, you'd never know the bunker section was there.

i dont can imagine how to survive a nuclear attack in a tin can. Here in Germany bunkers are build from concrete minimum 1m of thickness and 5 to 10metres under the surface. The bunkers have an airventsystem which generates overpressure in the inside of the bunker, to prevent the bunker from getting radioactive particles inside. The ventystem is equippt with overpressurevents to close automatically the shelter ventilation when the Bomb explode to protect the lungs of the people in the shelter. Not to say big waterreservoir which is included in the houseinstallation that there is always an exchange and fresh water in the bunker. I know this, a friend of mine has such a bunker in the basement of his house.
