When I was getting started, it took me about 3 weeks to figure out what primer was and how to find it. I guess some companies don't call it "primer". The Army Painter is what I ended up finding. A starter kit for paints is a great idea. Your colour palette is basically decided for you with a good starter kit. You just open it, choose a few colours that go together, and start slapping it onto miniatures. I'd have never started if I'd had to try to pick all my own colours from the array of paints available in store.
Maaaan that’s such a hot tip on using the primer rustoleum instead of the paint-primer - I was wondering why it was too thick!!!
i am all about value. i know you don't recommend the craft store paint, however, when painting a large item or large quantity of mini's for a particular theme, it is not advisable to use your expensive paints for base coat. a bottle of craft acrylic paint is usually 5 times the quantity of the expensive miniature paints. as for pricing, the craft paints are between $1 and $2 per color. the expensive paints cost between $5 to $10 per color. at 5 times the quantity, the savings is clear.
after base coating, then use the better paints to finish the details.
as an example, my T'au army is forest green over brown. 100 troops plus vehicles, drones and battle suits. if i used all premium paints, it would add at least 25% more to the cost of the army.
For brushes, I normally recommend either dirt cheap brushes with decent points like the ones you recommend here or a premium Kolinsky sable (Winsor & Newton, Rafael, or da Vinci). Never buy a mid-price brush, because they're not really any better than the cheap ones and they don't last any longer. But a premium brush really is worth the money, both for its longevity (6-12 months in regular use with decent care) and ease of painting.
For a wet palette, I would never pay Redgrass Games prices. The Masterson palette works just fine and it's a third of the price. And parchment paper and paper towel work just fine (better than dedicated palette papers, IME). Also, you can just throw them away when you're done painting for essentially no cost.
Paint+Primer spray works for me.
Saw your etiquette rules for games stores and afterthis vid subbed. Great personality and vid
COHEED! Nice hat :). This was a great overview of starter gear and doesn't just cover the wishlist of high end luxury stuff like many other channels do. Good video!
Beautiful. Exactly what I was looking for!
Howdy! I've just got into the Hobby really recently, and I've loved all your vids that I've seen so far. A video idea for you that might be beneficial to others as well (cause I sure as shit don't know and would find it entertaining) is the differences, and benefits to, painting miniatures with the different classifications of brushes.
E.g. Filbert, round, flat. Also 0, 1, and 2 brushes as well.
Love your work, thanks for the vids 👌✌️
Just found your channel. Great stuff dude. Look forward to seeing more from you.
Hey man, I stumbled upon your channel a few minutes ago and I must say that I am very surprised by your content quality and overall greatness of your channel even despite your surprisingly low subscriber count (don't worry it will be in the thousands in no time). I've finally decided to purchase some Warhammer stuff, just a simple Runtherd and Gretchin box of 11 minis for 13 bucks because I am a poor student lol. Gonna learn how to paint on those, if I mess up I won't mind because of the price. Hopefully I'll be able to get more and more Orks in the near future. I'll be looking forward for more videos!
Mini paints are good but eons of battle made a video where jay only painted with apple berry paints
9:03 I feel called out lmao.
I wish we had Rustolium Primer in the UK with how much everyone recommends it!
I really like Redgrass Games’ painting handles. I find they feel much better to use the Citadel’s handle and minis don’t risk popping off.
I'll have to give them a try!
Cool
a good video on how to wet blend would be wonderful :)
i tried to do wet blending and layering. tried being the keyword
I have a question, so I don't have an airbrush, also there is a waterbased primer, do you recommend the waterbased primer than the spraycan?
The only water based primer I know are the ones from Army Painter meant for XPS foam terrain. I'd be worried about good adhesion to the plastic since normal primers sort of chemically etch the surface for the paint to bind to. At least that's my understanding.
Hi Rich, I’m looking to get back into warhammer after over a decade out of it. Painting and modelling is the main aspect I’m really looking forward to getting into! What paint brand would you recommend, in terms of price and quality? You have your usual games workshop paints but I’ve recently come across speed paint.
Forgot to mention I’m based in the uk
Love your content
I'm a big fan of Pro Acryl for the price per ml and the quality of the paint. I don't love their washes though. Washes, my favorites are Citadel or Army Painter. contrast, speed paint etc, I really like Army Painter speed paints for painting things like board game minis or stuff I want to bust out fast. I.E. slapchop method. Citadel contrast for most other stuff. Vallejo is also great and was my go to for a long time but it's hard to get here in the states so you may have better luck across the pond. :)
Cheers mate!
