- This is in response to a couple of questions I’ve gotten about bromeliad flowers turning brown. Should the flower be left on? Will it bloom again off that same stalk? Should it be cut completely off?

In the case of bromeliads, it’s actually the inflorescence which provides the color. The flowers are small. Most plants will repeat bloom, some throughout the season & some every year, but that’s not the case with bromeliads. The mother plant blooms, the flower dies, pups (babies) form at the base of the mother & a part of the plant lives on. It’s all part of the natural life cycle of a bromeliad.
The guzmania, which you see me pruning the flower off of in the video, was the 1st one to turn totally brown. My aechmea flower is just showing a bit of brown in the center & the vriesea stalk has turned from vibrant orange to dark green. The quill of the pink quill plant has now turned lime green & the neoregelia looks great even though the tiny flowers inside the vase or urn (the central cup) have long died.
If you’d like, cut off the flower inflorescence & the entire stalk when it 1st starts turns brown if it’s bothering you. The plant won’t suddenly die after cutting it off. That takes a while & the mother will look good for quite some time after. I let the guzmania flower go totally brown for the sake of the video.

I really like your method of teaching. You gave me a sense of reassurance that my bromeliad plant is not dying but just going through its normal cycle of nature. Thank you so much for sharing.

What?
I love how the pink is spread around on different leaves. At first glance i thought that was the flower itself! Haha it is a unique and beautiful plant. My husband brought home a bromeliad from Home Depot for me & now I am doing some research on them.. they remind me alot of air plants with their life cycle. They only bloom once & then make pups and slowly die off as well! So interesting 🤔
I just purchased on of these in the clearance section of my local garden centre for 99p!! The flower has started to go a little bit brown but it has a little pup growing 😊 xx
I bought a guzmania last summer. .lost the flower very soon after purchase..thankfully still alive and with two pups! I wish the leaves on mine looks half as good as yours does.
Thanks, this was super helpful! I have my first bromeliad and I want it to thrive.
I got my bromeliad when it was already in flower but it is cold and the plant is pretty dormant. Now the flower is dying and I know that is a sign of the end of the plants life. The thing is it hasn't put off any pups... So I'm wondering if it's still can? or if the plant is just going to die and not produce any...
You have some beautiful Bromide s I wish I had some of the colours you have very good video many thanks for sharing
Isn't the point to try to keep them alive and help them re-flower? Is that possible? I guess I have a hard time accepting plant death! LOL. Can anyone see a movie called "Plant Cemetery". Haha. All jokes aside, sometimes you can't tell between death and dormancy. So if the mother plant is dying, I take it you can still wait for the "pups" to bloom. Thanks for the video. :)
My Acmea bromelia plant rotted away, I wish I could have saved it. Thanks for sharing love
mardel3 yea I bought am Acmea for like $24 dollars not ever seeing one before.thought gorgeous simple plant to take care of. It bloomed/flowered,then within 2 months was dying/dead. I assumed it just regrew the flower. then researched it... didn’t have any pups or anything just rotted away. Only got 2-1/2 months of life outta of it.
Great video. Really teaching
Thank you very much for the information. :)
My achmea has four pups I'm so excited!!
There are shoots inside the flower...I thought those would grow more but instead it's starting to turn brown and there are no pups. You think maybe the nursery cut the pups and then sold me an old flower?!
Also if its an infection do i need to remove my pup... it only has one... and its still pretty small
Thank you for the information l have the Akmia about 5 years
Thanks
Thank you for video and good info
That one that has the pink color on the green leaves is my New FAVE! Please tell me the spelling of the name. Are they toxic to pets? Thank you! 🥰🙌🏼
Why did my guzmanian flower only last two weeks before beginning to go brown? Did I give it too much water? It came extremely wet so I thought I should let it dry out but not too much and then give it sufficient water.. but I did drain the excess water....
I bought a guzmania from Costco it has 2 flowers with one pup but one flower is brown and has some white mold in between the petals. it's in a pot by itself I'm wondering if it will grow a pup even after pruning. either way I think the leaves are beautiful
Great vid thanks. What about if the tips of my lower leaves are getting brown?
I am so excited my Achemia has A baby. I was getting worried there for Awhile. My mom has had hers forever And It never produced pups is that normal
My whole bromeliad is brown plz i need help do i cut the base leaves that are brown off or keep them on... anyway ive cutted 2 im about to cut 2 more... is it bad to remove??? Plz answer ur so good at these bromeliads anyway im 12 and i loved them
Great 😅
I have a spot in the garden facing EAST shaded by a pin tree. will these plants ok with the morning sun?
I OVER Watered all of these kind of plants...some of them have broken off! Help me please!!I
Wait so my plant is just gonna die anyways? It's already flowered and has started browning but has absolutely 0 pups. I got it from the clearance area in my store and I'm a fairly new plant mom so I had no idea that there are plants that bloom once and then slowly die. I though I'd be able to maybe remove the bad ends and it grow another flower:(
I think I accidentally killed my vrieseas because I didn’t know we had to prune them, I’m a newbie and this is a learning lesson :(
My neoregalia bromeliad was starting to bloom and I was following instructions to water the bloom and leaf cups but then it stopped blooming and the bloom itself is covered with this white stuff. It hasn’t tried to bloom any further but the plant itself looks healthy. Is there a way to help it bloom? It saddens me because I love this beautiful plant and it was a gift.
My guzmania bromeliad mother plant has bloomed and looks exactly like the one you pruned. When is a good time to replant the pups? What happens to the mother plant? Does it die completely? Should I replant the pups and throw away the mother plant now?
I wish there were more questions answered but it seems like the creator never took the time to respond.. so many questions and not a single answer to be found :(
great videos.
How many pups are too many? Should they be pruned back also?
¡Mucho gracias!
What is the link to growing pupps
Can you grow these outdoors? im in phoenix arizona
I don't think you can because they don't like too much sun
Hallo...like to see your video...
Will a new flower appear from the pups? I have yet to see a pup appear but am wondering if I will see any more of the beautiful flowers?!
You will see more flowers, it just may take some time before they're old enough to bloom. A plant may not produce pups if growing conditions aren't good for them.
What species of bromeliad and what variety?
Hi Nel, I bought my first bromilade and I realized when I brought it home it was dying but then I realized I had a pup on it's way. I kept it attached to the mother as long as I could but recently I realized the pups leaves weren't looking so hot. Also my bromeliad has white stripes but today as I was examining it I touched a stripe and it came right off! This is such a mystery to me. I cant imagine powdery mildew would be the culprit but that's kind of what it looks like to me although I have no idea how powdery mildew would form perfect stripes all the same length. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? It's also on my pup too and like I said it looks like a design from the plant but when you touch it, it comes right off. Any advice would be appreciated thank you!
Omg lol, I just bought one of these from Walmart and the middle was completely brown. I figured I could bring it back to life but now I know they just die :’( money down the drain
It's not a complete waste of money. Bromeliads produce pups before dying (multiple pups usually) and they can flower once they reach maturity. Think of it as a long-term investment, because you may end up with more plants eventually.
Thank you!! I just checked and see 3!
the flower is turning brown I do not want to come I love my peanut I do not want to die either what I can do
