Last year when my potted mum starting looking done, late October, I did nothing to it and put it in the garage. When spring came, I noticed a bit of green so took out, cut it back, watered good and set it out where it would get plenty of sun. It is so beautiful this year. I live in central Iowa, zone 5.
Almost all my plants are Lowe's nearly dead perennials! My plants all get "haircuts" and lots of water & sun. I have a bunch of yellow mums planted in ground. They have come back for the past 3 years & survived NYC wiinters. Thanks for your video!
@@connieedwards8321 I should mulch them in the late fall....but I haven't....My garden survives on benign neglect. I generally clean up the dead leaves/sticks in the spring. Am always surprised to see new spring growth! Enjoy your gardening!
I searched for Mum care and your channel popped up very delightful this morning here in Tennessee I bought about 8 that are in pots and have never even had them. I'm very excited to try to care for them.
I put mine in the basement by the door to get light all winter. I have one blooming for the third time this year. I didn't know I could prune them, so I will in the spring.
Zone 5, Iowa here..planted in the ground last fall and they came back🥰they're huge. Wintering put a thick layer of mulch and they came back. Enjoy my coffee and deadheading time. Love your video. 😁
I love your down to earth attitude and knowledge. I immediately subscribed. I need as much help as I can get with mums. I'm good at growing everything except mums and azaleas.
Thanks! Well Azalias, blueberries etc love high acidity soil. Mums like lightly acidic bordering neutral. Try out that. Also check out my other 2 mums videos for any additional info. It should be down in description
Don’t know your location but mums are pretty hardy as plants, here in Williamsburg, VA. Belgium mums are the only reliably perennial mums I know, but regular mums have come back for me too. So, pot or ground, after they bloom, you can leave the stalks until spring or cut them off, right then in the fall. Then, in the spring, look for a tiny bit of green at the base. That means the plant is alive. Cut off the dead parts if you didn’t do this after they died the previous year, and add a bit of good soil to the base. I don’t put them in pots, but I would imagine it is the same process, although the soil might be a bit tired. If you see some of those green sprigs, don’t hesitate to dig them up, or take them out of the pot, and either replant them, or put them in the ground. These can be little pieces, really, but these things grow into big plants. You can move these little pieces outside, and replant them in a more pleasing arrangement, if they have grown where you don’t want them. They don’t look it, but those small pieces have a lot of life in them and will grow into gorgeous plants. My next must do, I learned the hard way. When they come back, they will look pretty good, with buds on them by June or so. But, in order for them to have sturdy stems in the autumn, and not fall over from the weight of the blooms, they must be cut back. Safe to do this any time, but before about July 4. If you cut them back after, you may not give them time to set new blooms. So cut them back by at least a third to a half. This is hard for me to do, because they look so good! But, the effect in the fall will be well worth it. As they age, three or four years old, they tend to grow roots outward, away from the original plant. My solution is to dig the whole thing up in the spring, reassemble the small pieces in my own pattern and cover them with new soil. And, I have even replanted those small pieces in new areas and gotten completely new and lovely plants. When I buy mums now, and I don’t have to buy many, I treat them as perennials, even if they are in pots on my steps. I know I will eventually be putting them in the ground. Not having to buy new mums and then just throw them away is a joy.
I got a lot of mum's last year and I am still finding them in my borders. I've bought regular and clearance ones this year. They are a nice surprise at the end of the season and the bees love them. I live in Oregon, zone 8.
Gonna really make a go of it for my mums...never before had them, I've read up on their care, made the investment on my limited budget bought 2 ...I do have a green thumb.....Hoping and praying that all your advise, tips will help me to make a very nice fall decore in my little patio thru the fall, often I sit in my little patio space, enjoy the garden I created..now I thought I wanna decorate with those beautiful heaping round mums and enjoy this fall season with the beautiful colors they give along with my pumpkin and gourds display tucked here and there in my patio. Wish me luck....God bless you...and by the way your great !
Great video! I have several mums in ground and in pots. I have one that is 5 years old and went to deaths door twice. Lol it's been repotted 5 or 6 times but went in ground last spring. Now it's big and beautiful. I love how resilient they are. Thanks for reminding me I can get the discount ones. I forgot about that. I usually pinch (prune) them all summer till July 4th and they come out full and bushy. I didn't do that this year and some of them look like crap. 😔 Live and learn.
This is so timely. I've been deadheading my mums this year and it has really helped. I had 6 mums that came back from last year (they were in the ground...zone 7b) and they have been really slow to bloom. I used granular fertilizer, but probably need to give them some liquid fertilizer. Oh...and I also saw some mums at my local Lowe's clearance section. I probably need to go back and get some.
Yep granular fertilizer helps for long term for regular feeding but it's generally not really enough for the amount of blooms we want so we go to liquid too😉🌻
Ditto what u just said !! I'm also zone 7 I'm a cashier at local grocery store we have gorgeous Mum's in for $12 ...I want so bad but have such bad luck...trying again I do everything she said .but they still die do t understand ... not doing it right .....lady few blocks away are gorge in her Yard

I just loooove your energy and enthusiasm. Subscribed and am now going to look for back episodes. I live in Zone 8 and am thinking about putting mums in the ground and loading up with pine straw for the winter.
In Iowa zone 5, I have tremendous success with even the annual mums by planting them directly into the ground for gorgeous throughout my gardens big splashes of color by each by in the fall heavily leaf mulch winter covering them ;-)
Uhm. Where have you been my whole life. I loved this video. I’m trying so hard now that my kids are a little older but my garden still stinks. This was so helpful. How did I not know mums are perennial?

I'm in zone 7b , I actually brought some of my mums indoors, after the blooms finished around November. I cut them back and now I have basketball shaped mum bushes " she said" lol... I do have grow lights on them... also peppers and what not. I have 3 acres, so this spring I'll build a greenhouse. I just trimmed the mums down to the base leaving about 5 or six branches above the soil at like two inches, that way all the nodes sprouted and I didn't have to trim tops to get that round shape.
Thank you for teaching folks that yes , do not toss your mums, replant, do cuttings, or give them to someone who has time, space, etc., just one thing, too chatty, dear❤, we're so busy right now, again , appreciate your advice for newbies, agape love 😊
I really like your video. I like your style and information. Peace & Love! I have one issue. Pollinators like bees and other insects are being poisoned all over the place. I get clearance plants too, but I don't like getting them from Lowes/Home depot/and a lot of other big places because they are treated with neonicitinoids and that poisons the soil, roots, 100% of the plants. Does not wash off or go away. So i look for clearance at places that have not been treated with neonics. So, Watters garden is expensive but they have different treatment. I shop clearance there and at those other places. There are other natural plant stores but you have to look and ask them. It matters to me because I don't want the forever chemicals and we have to have pollinators or everything dies essentially.
You are so helpful and awesome with your way of explaining plus you had me laughing. What a positive uplifting personality. I'm looking forward to more of your videos!
Thank you so much for the video 👍 really nice of you to take your time to do it for all of us, I deadhead my mum's for ever just because after I did it for first time, I saw it help
I purposely did not prune my mum's the first year I grew them from 3" potted seedlings because I wanted them to focus on getting roots established. Next year I will mark my calendar to prune my mum's to shape into balls in June.
Omg I’m so glad I found you! I am also ADHD off the Richter scale 😂 (yes, diagnosed, medicated, in therapy lol). I just moved into a house from an apartment and not only did the previous owners do a lot of landscaping but I also go freakin wild in the garden stores buying all the flowers. (Recently mums for the same reason… so sad for summer and beautiful flowers to leave.) However, the first 2 I purchased are giving me heck. The yellow flowers started turning pink/purple and plant app I downloaded (and paid for bc I need that much help lol) said I was overwatering. I cut back, same thing still happening. 🥴 Unless I missed it in the video (possible seeing as how I’m doing laundry at the same time as listening), I didn’t hear about watering. I’m trying to find the balance plus what to do when I’m out of town coming up next week. Help! (Side note - I live in Illinois. I also have a greenhouse from previous owners… no idea how to use that thing but pumped to hear that my mums have potential to stick around bc I totally thought they were a one season gig!)
I got some beautiful mums this year (my husband actually works at Lowes 😂) and I’m trying to decide if I should plant them in the ground or put them in pots and keep them in the basement near a window for winter. Plus, I get a groundhog every year and I have to wonder if he will eat all the leaves and flowers🤔
I'm fighting nature right now on 3 mums that were given to my grandma. I've just given them a bigger pot, fresh soil as the old stuff was completely soaked and was a mess of roots, and just deadhead them. I'm going to be getting some liquid fertilizer as that should help them out and if they survive, I'm separating them completely from one another
We’re getting some early 35F night temps coming up, I’ve always had good luck with my mums continuing to thrive through cold crisp nights, but I’m worried about a frost/freeze coming this soon. October only just began, I need these babies through Halloween. Usually they don’t start showing signs of distress (even the cheap small potted ones) until late November, even into December depending on temps and conditions. For whatever reason though this year I’m feeling concerned. Zone 5 here. Most of mine are hardy and in the ground, currently in full glorious bloom.
Hi, thank you for a great video. I just bought lots of Mums and I need to know if I need to cut them all the way to the ground before mulching. I do not have a green house. Thank you.
I'm in zone 4b and took a leap of faith a couple years ago with a mum I bought from ghe store. It had 3 different colors in the pot, but they all came back as 1 color. I leave them alone at the end of the season but mulch them heavily with leaves then prune them way back in the spring when I start to see new growth. I just planted 4 more a couple weeks ago not paying attention to the fact that they are floral mums. I doubt those will survive our winter. I also just discovered Belgium mums. But think it may be too cold to plant it so I'll have to over-winter it in the house which I've never done. (Hope I done kill it!)
A. You could absolutely be an Angelina Jolie double. B. I had never been successful with mums because I didn't realize the pretty ones that caught my eye at the store were "floral mums" not garden or Belgium mums which are hardy or good for different zones? Last year I took a leap of faith and bought a few that I liked from a box store and they came back this year! I did trim them all back, but they still look pretty leggy, my question is did they turn them back to early? Should I wait until June or July or can I keep trimming them back to give them more branches? Thanks for all the tips!
I bought 2 a few weeks ago. They are still in the prior and sitting on my porch. I know nothing about planting and repotting or keeping them alive. They look to be dying a bit so I’m trying to research what they need to survive. I’m about to look up the liquid fertilizer from the video. What are some other products I should buy?
What a great video! I am so glad I found you! I have been growing mums in 6 packs then I moved them into the mum pots. Pinched them back, actually twice and they are still growing tall not wide. I have about 100 of them all different kinds. What could I be doing wrong? I am fert. them at least 2-3 times a week... what the heck could I be doing wrong?
Your video was so helpful. I never thought to prune mums. I'm in zone 7, it's July and my mums have bloomed. Should I deadhead them now or prune them now fort the fall?

When spring came, I noticed a bit of green so took out, cut it back, watered good and set it out where it would get plenty of sun. It is so beautiful this year. I live in central Iowa, zone 5.

I really loved your video it helped alot . Keep it coming😊
I loved this video. Very thorough and great information. Thank you
Thank you so much! Getting my mums! Subscribing!
I'm fighting nature right now on 3 mums that were given to my grandma. I've just given them a bigger pot, fresh soil as the old stuff was completely soaked and was a mess of roots, and just deadhead them. I'm going to be getting some liquid fertilizer as that should help them out and if they survive, I'm separating them completely from one another
You're so cute!! Thank you for all the great information! I liked and subscribed. :)
Love your enthusiasm!
This was a great video! Thank you so much. It's very helpful!!!
Loved this video!
You are awesome. Great tips
I'm def going to try
Thank you.
You are such fun and so helpful!!
Love your energy😀👏🏼👏🏼and your presentation. I do clearance too.
Hi 👋
Thank You for sharing. Gonna try to save my plant for next year 👍 Hello from New York 🍁🎃
Just use egg shells most plants like calcium it softens the water and soil also keeps snails off
Thank you so much for the information- Great help!
Finally Deadheading will it encourage new set of flowers in the same season in mums and other chrysanthemum
If it's too late and it's flowering, should I wait til it's flowers and then cut it back? It's April now, and mine has already started to flowers.
I’m ADD - Container Gardening has helped me so much too. New subscriber 😎
I'm redoing my gardens, and I need some mums for color. My gardens are huge so I need a lot. Can you say clearance😊❤
Do the mums need watered at all during the winter? I think I will cover mine with the plastic shower curtains from the dollar tree. 💐
What is the different between pinching and pruning
Your video was so helpful. I never thought to prune mums. I'm in zone 7, it's July and my mums have bloomed. Should I deadhead them now or prune them now fort the fall?
I live in 5b, how many times during the winter should I water the plants?
