- Zoom F1 Field Recorder - Unboxing and Audio Test shows off the new all-in-one from Zoom. This unit includes the shotgun microphone for an increased price.
For the money, it's a pretty good buy and overall great sound quality. Just have to make sure your pre-amps on some cameras can keep up.

Like your review , Just a little tip , to get the best sound going in to your camera , turn the camera preamp to zero or just above zero, the use only the gain from the F1 , you will find you will get crystal clear audio .
I just picked one up too. It’s pretty amazing how they got the recorder so small and be able to use the capsules.
Finally find a video about this!
Should of had an a/b of the camera pre versus the f1 audio for a real comparison and audio test with distance factor. thanks good vid
Wow. Now I know what’s inside the box. He lets us know multiple times!
Happy to help.
Thanks for the solid & enthusiastic review! What boom pole did you use with this? I'm thinking of using a monopod but the mount would be at a bit of a weird angle...
Instablaster.
Need to turn down gh4 recording volume as low as possible and shotgun mic as high as possible to dodge those preamps...
Does the recorder turn on automatically when you turn on the camera like the rode mic Pro plus?
Nope!!
To someone that's worked as an audio engineer? Yup good one
No, it doesn't.
You are so full of you're products i have a zoom h5 used it four times doesn't work anymore very nice !!
Thank you for the review. I can hear the hizzing sound when direct connect to the camera. Is it suppose to be like that??
That's the cameras fault not the zoom.
4 to 4.5 feet for a shotgun mic is just to far away, a foot no more than 2 feet from your mouth. The boom position was much better. Did you do any adjustments to the Zoom F1 gain?
I bought the f1 with the Lav mic set up. I needed the belt clip lav mic for use when making my youtube video. so far it seems to work ok. I dont like the input level adjustment for the Lav mic as it registers -LO, LO, +LO, -MED, MED, +MED and so on up to ++HIGH instead of numbers up to 100 like the H1 does. I like that about the H1 better as you have more fine adjustments of mic gain when using a LAV mic. I'm currently running mine at - HIGH " negative high " which is ok but sometimes to low and sometimes to high depending on ambient noise. I'd almost say I like the H1 better with the exception that the build quality of the H1 is very low compared to the rugged build of the F1. using the H1 I could mostly use the raw recording sync to my video just as it was out of the H1 unit. the F1 seems to require the use of adobe audition or audacity to tweak it into a more acceptable end result. I'd like to hear and see your work flow for working with the F1 files, what format your recording in and why, as well as what software you use to teak the files and what you generally apply to the files, noise reduction method, compression, etc etc.
+daveknowshow I can work on that.
Cheers for the review and sound samples.
They also have a stereo microphone that you can plug in. But, that battery door! I don't think that door would last 1 year for me.
+Richard's World Traveler It's a real pain.
nice. thanks for this review. i might consider this.
It sound like… without low frequency sounds… Which was the first microphone that you used at the beginning of this video?
Rode SmartLav Plus. Smartphone mic.
Does the F1 with shotgun mic have better sound or the H5 with the shotgun mic? Also, how is the nosiefloor? How does the SHG-6 compare to the NTG-2/NTG-4?
+Adrian D I have a ntg-2. Want me to do a comparison?
That would be awesome!! Would love to see the noisefloor, pckup pattern, sensitivity and sound being compared.
Adrian D mine is really noisy even with my DSLR levels on 2 ticks from the end and the gain set to 1 on the F1. But once I throw denoiser on it in Premiere it sounds like a movie
What sound quality of F1 vs H6 with external mic? What noise of preamp line in?
I have a question if I put the XY module from a H6 would it record stereo or would it make a mono mix of the two tracks. Also could I use a wireless lav(Rode or Sennheiser) at the same time as i am recording with the Shotgun or XY module and if so would I get multiple tracks of audio?
+Gabriel Chelcea pretty sure you'd get multiple tracks. Because this takes the xlr expandable
I suspect that the shotgun module blocks the line in and records mono to both channels. You could use the XLR module to plug in two mics, recording to left and right as separate channels.
The XY mic will record stereo, but you cannot record through 3.5mm and the zoom proprietary mount simultaneously.
Thanks for the quick test but would love to know what the F1 recorded audio sounded like on the GH4 not going into it. Also, and this is Zooms fault, for those that have a shotgun capsule already you can’t purchase the shock mount separately. Overall the customer service at Zoom kinda sucks.
Trrs cable depends on if you are using an iPhone or not, Android you can get away with trs.
hi broth, this shotgun can be used by ZOOM H6 too...? is the same... or what...? cause i have one H6, and i want to buy a shotgun, and this new offer, is really great, u know... so... (soy de la rioja argentina. lo siento por mi inglés)
+Arcadio Valentín Herrera Arvay Yes. It works with all Zoom modules. Soy Argentino Tambien
Any vids on your iphone/lav mic set up ? thanks
+iamyourfuture808 I can make one.
I have the Smartlav, what App are you using to record it on your iPhone?
When you press the record button on your camera, does the recorder automatically start recording audio (when the stereo mini cable is plugged into your camera mic port) or do you have to press the record button on the zoom F1 as well? thanks!
chibot botchi have to press it on the recorder itself
thanks man!
does the F1 record on SD card and via cable into the DSLR at the same time?
+Emanuel Pelz Yes.
Yes, I believe so. The F1 will store it as a back up track.
Thats a weird place for a 1/4 20 mount
No it isn't. Pretty normal for most portable recorders these days.
Make sure to take extra batteries and get good quality ones as this thing eats them.
