    Thank you for a review that did exactly what I needed! Practical comparison to several other mics, some good pro's and con's, and generally a good thorough look on how it works without getting too deep into technicalities. Just bought the H6 recorder with the MSH- and XYH-mics included, and needed to know what the SSH would/wouldn't add to the mix :-)

    Fabulous review, just what I was looking for. Thank you for posting. I've used my H5 for years with the default stereo capsule, and have been pretty happy. I think you've answered the question of whether I'll invest in the SSH-6.
    I've had good results with a little cheap Boya branded shock mount for my H5 with the standard capsule. It was not a lot of money, I got it on amazon.

  • @VinnyLePes

    Just a tip people may or may not find useful! Mid/Side recording is only two microphones, not a mono plus stereo pair. The side mic is simply what they call a figure-8 microphone, meaning it picks up sound equally from both directions. The mid mic can be anything, really. Instead of Left/Right channels like in XY stereo, each channel is Mid/Side. That means you can record your side signal fully and decide in post whether to use it or not simply by using an M/S plugin in your DAW or NLE, or you can use the app that Zoom has available as well. Not great for people who don't edit in post, but if you are syncing your audio back to video or mixing it in post, chances are you have an M/S decoder in your software!

    Great Video, gives a really nice insight of this little fella. I have the H5 with the xy mic only but want to capture more directional sound. Kind of like a run and gun Foley Recorder. With the xy mic it seems that I have to turn up the mic volume to 8 and above nearly every time to get loud enough sound. Is this better with the directional one? Can you recall what Audio Level you put the Zoom Mic on when comparing it to the RøDE inside?

    Loved your video! Some quick feedback, I think you'd achieve slightly better audio quality by turning the midside mics down slightly. The stereo effect is overpowering with the settings you used at the tail end of your video. Also, you should check out the new Zoom F1 -- it's a mini-recorder that works with their mic pods, and it comes with a lovely shockmount!

    so recording with xy mic will not be able to reduce noise for interview needs, so we will still need a shotgun mic, right?

  • @oliviadavis7184
    @oliviadavis7184 Год назад

    I need to document/record noise that is produced by an HVAC (Air Conditioner) while it is running from about 8 ft away. I tried to record the noise with my phone, but the recording is not clear and the recording does not sound like when you hear the noise in person. Should a mic be used with this recorder to capture the noise? If yes, which mic is recommended? Perhaps a (directional) boom mic? I might use the Zoom H6 recorder.
    I might try using the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone Capsule with Hairy Windscreen with it. I thought about the Rode NTG5, but that is a bit out of the budget that I want to spend.

    There's also the zoom F1 which has a shockmount. Also think that has an auto gain option, not 100% sure if that's compatible with the SSH-6.

  • @AndrewNorthover
    @AndrewNorthover 6 лет назад +28

    Auto gain on the mic?? I appreciate the video review and the samples man, also your energy is tops. But it pays to know the industry a bit better. Auto gain is without fail the worst thing you could ask for in the professional audio realm. There's nothing worse than losing your control of levels because a computer is trying to decide what you want. By fluctuating your gain level, your noise floor becomes inconsistent so post processing/use of the recordings will be almost impossible to work with.

    • @georgeholliday123
      @georgeholliday123  6 лет назад +2

      hi Andrew! Thank you! I think for recording samples for music and production, and in terms of interviewing somebody professionally in a controlled environment, I fully agree with you! But when I have the auto gain on my Canon, I feel it does it really well for on the fly stuff like vlogs, and when I'm working in the music industry in and out of loud environments, adjusting the volume literally every few minutes is the last thing i want to do on the fly, so to have that option would be so useful. It's also really frustrating when i have the levels set perfectly, with plenty of headroom, and then something loud will happen in some of the environments i'm in, and the audio is completely ruined. I appreciate that's a bit of a unique environment, but to have the option for on the fly stuff would be so valuable to somebody like myself in extreme volume environments. Like I say though, I do fully agree with you for the majority of uses, and hope this makes sense 😃

    • @AndrewNorthover
      @AndrewNorthover 6 лет назад +6

      George Holliday I see what your saying but I think Better knowledge of audio engineering will save your difficulty in this. Audio files from recorders like this come with huge detail with infinite headroom. Basically as long as you’ve captured your audio, with the right dynamics processing in post, you can set yourself up with a one click fix that will automatically subdue the hottest peaks whilst raising the floor, so you get a unified, even sound with a prescribed dynamic range that you choose. I’d look into it mate. Auto gain can devastate a recording if there’s some anomaly that causes an intense duck or boost. Even for run and gun stuff. You can create yourself a preset in your favourite dynamics processor/compressor/limiter that’ll be purpose specific to dialogue, ambient, SFX or something and you only need to do it once.
      I promise you, not only will you make your life easier, you’ll have a more professional output.

    • @adinwalls
      @adinwalls 5 лет назад +1

      Andrew Northover I gotta come to George’s defends in this. I too come from an audio recording background and now do film. And I do everything myself. I agree, controlling gains etc myself is first choice especially for recording music, BUT, a case in point my recent video was recording by someone else on my gear. He knew enough to get by but it was so much easier have an auto feature to get the job done and rather worry about things like planning our shots and for me to rather practice my performance. And then in run and gun situations I always use the auto gain feature.

    • @ZenGeekDad
      @ZenGeekDad 5 лет назад

      @@adinwalls Doesn't it turns on the particulars? I've had autogain ruin footage (making me glad for redundant content at capture), and I've had autogain work just fine, thus skipping some (very quick) postprocessing. In work for a less critical audience, and with reasonably consistent and strong volume sources, autogain seems fine. But for challenging work, like orchestra or concert pianist in noisy backgrounds (HVAC, audience rustling, strong RF sources) static gain seems safer. And running a compressor & dynamics processor in post is *so* quick. Finally, digital noise reduction is already such a crapshoot; I net out underwater audio way too often. Anything that fuels that result seems toxic.

    • @joebowbeer
      @joebowbeer 2 года назад

      Nevertheless, a built-in compressor can be enabled per input on the Zoom.

    I use the SSH6 a lot, but in quiet environments I get a "rushing" noise in the background (which I didn't hear in your demo). Were you able to cleanly remove it? Or did you not have it at all? I would really appreciate the help.

    • @georgeholliday123
      @georgeholliday123  5 лет назад +1

      Good question! I do have that hiss in there sometimes yeah, I think it’s a power thing more than anything because I notice it less when the power is plugged in, couldn’t say if that’s just my unit though.
      A bit of EQ or light noise gating gets rid of it to an unnoticeable degree. A lot of the things I do for video also have some kind of music/soundtrack to, and that masks quite a lot of noise. Hope that’s helpful!

    I frankly don't get the point of this mic. I actually ordered it, and then returned it immediately when I found out that what you call "the side mics" are actually a single figure eight mic that outputs to a single track. So there goes the idea of front/side recording, which seems like a weird idea with a shotgun anyway. And who would want to blend in noise that you tried to eliminate or at least minimize by using a shotgun mic? It's an odd contraption.

    I've tested SSH6 and it has loud self noise. If you want to record loud music it is great microfone, but nit for voice

      How did you test it? I've found that the headphone output on the zoom h5 is super noisy, but that noise is not apparent on recordings.

    I just bought a H5 along with SSH-6. I followed your demonstration,turn off the mid side mic. I mean I just want to use it under top directional mic mode. But I still could heard the sound from the side when I wear my headphone with the mid mic off. I wonder the sound from the mid mic still went into the recording. Or it is just showed in the headphone but wouldn‘t be recorded?
    Could you help me?

      Hey Alex - I don't have the SSH-6 but pretty confident that even the single directional shotgun mic capsule has a 'supercardiod' polar pattern... meaning it rejects a lot of sounds coming from off-axis, but definitely not 100%. So I'm not surprised you could still hear sounds from the side at least somewhat. There should be good falloff though with much lower levels for the sounds in front of the mic vs the sides.

    Excellent bro, thanks for the review. I'll probably be looking at getting one of these for my set up soon. I would rather have a doer's opinion then a "professional" opinion anyway. Pros can have all their weird preferences that they get incestuously from being too encapsulated in their own quirky culture instead of knowing what matters and sounds good to the average Joe

      Nice! Ultimately, the story counts more than anything. You’ll never beat the professional’s opinion, but you can always beat a good storyline! Haha have fun with it!

    Can zoom lavalier mic be attached with zoom H5 recorder? Thanks

    • @InfinitelyQurious
      @InfinitelyQurious 4 года назад +1

      Yes. You plug it into the 3.5mm jack on the side of the capsule, and then select "plugin power" from the menu, and turn it on. And that's actually a better way to record dialog from one person, honestly. You'll typically get much better audio than futzing around with much more expensive mics and windscreens.

  • @THECYCLISTENVE

    It's the best mic I've ever used in the Zoom line up for the adapters, even tried the XY and round one. I used it for a podcast type of setup for product reviews, even over the Rode Vid micro + or the new Vid NTG. Once I added a POP filter, it's gold. Even tried the F1(screen is just not the best but same audio outcome), but the readouts on the H-6 is great for recording talent in front of you in color. The clarity is just incredible for bang for your buck.

  • @richardadams9039

    So much more informative than Zoom's POS useless feckery website. Between you and Ken Rockwell I'll be getting the Grey version, because the >ZOMG 2020 Black< is just a crass marketing ploy to sell a new case colour with the same guts for more money with less accessories. I did think the RODE had a fuller sound, even on my lame tablet speakers, but that's what more viewers are going to listen through, little drivers with the narrow bandwidth of Humphrey Bogart's telephone, instead of reference drivers in some audiophile's temple o' exquisite sound. Thank ya just all ta pieces and stay safe!

    Why don’t you just use the compressor of the zoom, if you want to reduce dynamics?

    • @georgeholliday123
      @georgeholliday123  2 года назад

      Compressing the audio and reducing the volume is a very different thing if you’re wanting to edit your audio afterwards. Compressing will basically squash the audio and if you do it too much it can sound really unnatural. If you turn the volume down then you can always compress when editing afterwards 😁

    I actually read a comment below that the predecessor of this microphone doesn't have an echo and that's why it's bad. Guys, you don't want an echo from your directional microphone. you don't want a directional microphone to record anything except the thing that you pointed it at. You said that you liked this microphone over the other one because you feel a bit more and you feel the room but that's exactly the opposite of what you want from a directional microphone. You are a lovely guy and I enjoyed your interview and your heart is in the right place but youhave no idea what you're talking about. That's why you need an audio engineer and a professional in the field to make reviews of a equipment that is supposed to be a professional equipment that supposed to do a specific job. And your review can influence people to make a wrong decision. I enjoyed it and gave it a thumbs up and it actually hurts me to be negative but dude please inform yourself about directional microphones and what they're supposed to do and then delete this video. Now it's clear to me that Zoom created this microphone for people that don't necessarily need a professional directional microphone and we'll make a decision based on what sounds better right out of the box and then when you need to put it in your student film you have a lot of background and you cannot do anything in post. You want to put audio atmosphere with sounds that you want to pick but you cannot because you hear the street and birds chirping and who knows what else and then you realize that you really don't need those stereo microphones you only need a directional microphone and you waste your money.

    • @TheGeocab

      I do not have one of these nor am I a professional, but I've watched a few videos on this mic and I believe the side mics recordings can be eliminated or raised in post depending on what you are going for, separately from the front mic recording. If that is indeed the case, is this mic still a bad choice based on your reply? Just curious, I'm still trying to educate myself about these things.
