  • In this video, AB takes a look at the new Zoom F1 Field Recorder. Designed with modularity in mind, the F1 allows you to attach a variety of capsules to the recorder, ranging from shotgun microphones to dual X/Y stereo microphones, and even XLR input attachments.

    The _Achilles Tendon_ on this unit as well the *ZOOM H1* and the *ZOOM H1n* is the Power On/Off button. Is weak and my *ZOOM H1* power button are broken already. This was the main reason I switched to the TASCAM DR-05.

    Think given the price point on this one at under $300.00, in the AUSTRALIAN market that this has got to be a AWESOME go to, I would love to also attempt to pair this with a blue yeti XLR pro.

    I have the H6 and looking at the F8. I have most of the mics. I do find that many times I only use two inputs. Due to this and that I do not have a Lav mic, it just made it on my wish list. B&H is there a Gator case for the unit, a lav and shotgun mic?

    Hi guys, what do you think of the zoom F1 vs the H1N ? both can fit in a pocket but the H1N is at half the price, has in built stereo mic and seems to have the sames fonctionnalities than the F1... I'm looking for a simple audio recording setup, and it'll be my first (and probably the only one) audio recorder just for some review/vlogging type videos

    If I have the Rode Video Micro, can I take that cord and plug it into the slot the lav mic would go in and use the Rode shotgun mic instead when I wanted to? I couldn't find anything definitive, just suggestions of the other version with their shotgun attachment. But, I like the option to use the lav or the shotgun depending on the situation. Also thinking about not necessarily having the recorder attached to a camera, just using it in a pocket with the shotgun attached and aimed at sounds I want to capture. Will this allow for that? Thanks. :) Paula

    The 3.5mm mic port on the F1 is MONO. The only way to add a stereo 3.5mm input is to attach the XYH-5 optional accessory. You won't find any mention of the stereo 3.5mm port in Zoom's XYH5 literature but it's there. You can get the XYH-5 as an included accessory if you buy the H5.

    What would be the best audio gain level on F1 to get best audio without unnecessary noice in the background. With shotgun mic I dial up to 5, that gives -32 decibels on recording, but not sure if that’s the best way.

      @@BandH Mark: Great! I have been looking for clarification on this.
      For others who are interested and for your reference:
      Whilst I have a series of audio recorders including the F4 from Zoom, I don't have anything with the small form factor of the F1 to add to my Sony A6300. My A6300 is 80% part of my personal kit rather than my professional kit which includes the likes of the FS7 and FS5, FS100 from Sony. However, there are times when the A6300 is the best choice, simply due to its small form factor. E.g., when I need to travel around Tokyo for a documentary shoot and need audio too but don't want to lug around my heavy FS7 (think the addition of a heavy suitable tripod too!) and even the FS5 can get tedious and heavy if a hike up a mountain is needed!
      The achilles heel of the A6300 (and now the A6400 too) - ming bogglingly both touted as capable video capture devices - is that Sony omitted a headphone jack for monitoring audio. I have the XLR-K2M attachment which is great, but without a headphone jack to monitor, it's a high risk situation if you need to capture an interview. External recorders (like my Roland R-26 and definitely my ZOOM F4) add bulk and become wieldy and I may as well use my FS5 if I'm going to carry those around. This is where the F1 starts to shine. It's small and can handle two channels. Shotgun mic for B-roll capture, impromptu interviews and will also allow me to plug in something like my Rode lavalier mic attached to Rode's own mic extension cable for a sit-down interview. I could even throw in a wireless kit in a backpack and take that along with me. Whether you are a professional like myself fitting in with a client's budget and/or having to spend all day lugging around gear on public transport or up a mountainside in mid-summer and wishing to maintain a minimum standard for audio or a tourist who would like to record good audio ambience of your holiday as well as pretty pictures, then size matters. Camera/audio gear is cumbersome and can quickly become a pain in the b**t no matter how much you love cinematography/videography. I personally feel that so long as camera manufacturers sell cameras without headphone jacks (or even mic input jacks!), then this solution by Zoom should be a candidate for consideration.
      ........now if Sony would do something about the 'impossible to see in bright sunlight excuse of a monitor screen' on their cameras.....so, ultimately lugging around an external monitor is still going to be necessary to get that critical focus. I wonder if there is such a thing as a monitor goggle-like thingy...after all, there is no better stand/attachment device than your nose and your ears as proven by decades of use by spectacles and sunglasses wearers. Definitely help to keep the camera small. One eye will do!

    Actually, you can't bring one F1 unit with you for multiple tasks. Zoom won't sell the accessories separately at this time. Therefore if you're a dedicated Zoom customer with a SGH-6 you can't use that on the F1 since the shock mount is not available for sale. Furthermore, the wired lav is also not for sale. Not a good way for Zoom to treat their current customers.

From what I understood, what ones they dont make available to resellers are supposed to be available on the Zoom website. I really want to get the Zoom shockmount as there doesnt appear to be a 3rd party option at this point.

    • @dr.photographer2872

      I bought a Zoom F1 LP Kit as the Lav is pretty decent(I had planned to buy a Rode lab mic) to record my commentaries and to record interviews, studio recording, sound bytes from environment (like bird chirping/sound of water flowing etc) bought SSH-6 Shot gun which is far far better than SGH 6.
      So here is the calculation- if you buy SP kit- with a SSH 6 and a Shock mount total cost at B&H is 199 USD+129+29 USD = 357 USD which in India would be cheaper or equal to a SP kit (average quality shot gun mic called SGH 6) + a lav mic of a good quality.
      SD Card you have to purchase separately anyways.
      So my recommendation is buy a LP kit and any extra H6 capsule which will be a far better option than buying a SP kit and then purchase a good Lav mic. Once you have different mic capsules over a period, you can easily upgrade to higher recording unit like F5/F6 or even future F1n :)
      Do the math yourself !

    • @ab1453
      @ab1453 6 лет назад +3

      Great question. You could certainly plug a lav into an H1n and get great results. I think that the attraction to the F1 is that it allows you to change capsules for non-lav work, so that versatility may be a deciding factor for someone who is interested in shooting content with different mic options, vs the H1n's fixed X/Y capsules. Hope that's helpful.

    • @andrewjones-productions
      @andrewjones-productions 5 лет назад

      @Fighting Arts of England: Form factor and durability primarily I would suggest. I have the H1 - good it is. Tough it isn't. I'm talking about situations where a talent may have it in their pocket and sit down awkwardly and break it. The H1 isn't weak by any means, but it's stick-like form factor makes it vulnerable and it is a pain to fit on a belt for example.

      @5:00 is the lav vs. shotgun mic comparison. ... And the shotgun mic is in the F1's accessory connector. The audio is being recorded on the F1, and it is passing through to the camera. As the reviewer said, you get a safety track that way: two audio recordings. You could set the gain a bit lower, or maybe auto-gain, on the camera in case the F1 is set too high and clips, for one example.

    Zoom's sales models are messed up. they should sell the F1 at a base price, then allow the customer to add packages such as lav or their choice of shotgun mic. Forcing customers to buy the lav or mono shotgun combined packages is frustrating for customers like me who want both the lav and the stereo shotgun mic. Seems like a greedy sales model and I can't find any resellers who package the products with the customer in mind. So I am guessing that this is because Zoom mandates it that way.
