Whenever the subject of tuning a guitar on stage is mentioned It reminds me of the time when Jimi's Strat was badly out of tune. He just reached up to the headstock and tuned her up with that cheeky smile on his face. I'm 70 and feel privileged to have been in the generation the changed the world or watched it being done by others.
Slow and methodical wins the race when it comes to learning guitar. So, if you don’t see any improvement in 30 days, perhaps at the end of 60 days you will.
Of course an absolutely fundamental to being able it play the guitar. I remember how the idea of the tuning perplexed me for a while as a beginner haha. Cheers Marty.
Just a little info for Gibson owners with nitro finishes, clip on tuners if left on the guitar for long time start eating the finish. I learned this the hard way with a snark tuners on my SG
Thank you for what you do. I appreciate your style of teaching. After 40+ years, I'm finally trying to learn again. You're going to be a great help. I didn't know there were already sayings to help remember string notes, so I created my own: Every Adult Donkey Gets Big Ears
Marty, I took a year of music theory at University, my major Math/CS, and the music theory course was my cake class for a year where I had two semesters each of Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Techniques, during my freshman year. Bought a guitar and transposed from the Piano to guitar, the Major, Melodic Harmonic, Minor scales along with the regular Minor scale. Bought a pitch pipe and literally for decades didn't realize the pitch pipe was for, "Spanish Guitar". I was watching RUclips videos for a long Time and couldn't figure out how my Chords always sounded different than what was presented. I'm not sure why, but after watching one of your videos for the first Time it dawned on me, that my pitch pipe wasn't a, "Normal", guitar tuning. It now seems ridiculously humorous, but I owe you big Time, Landsman.
My issue with rechargeable is if it dies you are out of luck until it can be recharged. Batteries are quick. (Especially an issue with rechargeable flash lights 😂)
I bought one of those tiny fender clip ons but I might get that rechargeable one instead. The fender I have seems to be straight up wrong sometimes and other times it won't even pick up the lower half of strings. That, and the battery life seems abysmal.
Hey Marty, thanks for the video here, i only use an Old Conn Strobe, But I have a new Peterson Strobe, foot pedal, They work Great, Man, I had to back to the old School, they do Not let you down, Cousin Figel
Marty can you make a tutorial on how to play Faithfully by Journey and how to play the epic solo at the end, if not its ok, i love your videos either way lol
Someone should mention that tuners often have different settings for the type of instrument you are using. If your tuner is set to violin it is not very helpful.
I haven’t watched the whole video yet but when you were messing with the tuning it reminded me of family guy when Peter was on stage tuning his guitar and he played a chord and it was out of tune and he said “this guitar was in tune when I grabbed it” 😂
Guitar players today are sooo dependent on electronic tuners but not all tuners are perfect for tuning accurately. I was at a jam session once when the other guitar player asked if he could use my tuner. The look on his face was priceless when I handed him my 440 A tuning fork! A good electric tuner should be accurate within 1 tenth of a cent. Beware of cheap tuners that only give + or - 1 cent accuracy.
I feel like with the god-awful microphone on phones, it wouldn't really pick up your tuning accurately.. i have used apps though just to be cheap and convenient, but I do trust hardware a lot more
As a blindie this is the most overwhelmingly frustrating thing to try and do in almost every profoundly loud dive. 😎 It seems simple to get a sightling to just look, at the clip type tuner and tell you what they see... perhaps the house sound guy... 🤪😳 "There's got to be a morning after." 😱😅 It's usually too loud for the Fender app on my phone to even help, outside or in a restroom. I could do it through some amplifier like Joe Walsh, (love his tutorial on tuning and setting up). Then everybody is stuck listening to me tune. There has to be some more accessible discrete vibrating way that isn't outrageous. 🤣 I feel like back when I dreamed of building my own catapult zip line to get across the main high traffic street.
20+ years ago, a guitarist offered to let me use their tuner once. When done, it sounded off. When i fine-tuned it with my ear, then the tuner said it was wrong. I wasn't wrong, the tuner was. I have refused to use a tuner ever since. I simply don't trust them.
I've heard that anything clipped into the sound hole on an acoustic guitar Can change the tone and pitch when playing. I've even heard it said that thick Pic guard on your guitar can change the sound. So what are your thoughts on this? I just put a less than 1mm guard on my acoustic guitar and can't tell any difference. But I'm a newbie. I like that 360 rechargeable tuner.
Great lesson you motivate so many people to play guitar great videos you should do some lessons for three days grace and theory of a deadman I would love lessons for them
Great video with great information Marty 👍🏼 ik I’m not in your patreon but would you mind checking out The Tragically Hip and possibly doing some lessons on them in the near future. If you see this, Thanks for teaching me most of what I know on guitar lol 😂
Hey Marty I was recently given an old acoustic from a relative but I've only played electric the last 20 years and I never really learned the correct way to change acoustic guitar strings. I've accidentally broken the plastic bridge trying to change the strings and was hoping you've done a video on changing acoustic strings or if you'd be interested in making one in the near future.
I've never seen a plastic bridge on a real guitar, just toys and a few low end ukuleles. Are you talking about the saddle that sits in the bridge, perhaps? If it's a saddle, and you have the broken prices, it shouldn't be that hard to sand down a replacement to the same size and shape from a bone (or nubone) blank. Tool wise, all you would need is a really flat surface and some sandpaper.
@Richard Houser I'm talking about the piece where the strings go when you need to replace them. I assumed it was called the bridge but anyways it's a complete break.
Here's what I'm trying to ask if u don't have a tuner and you suppose to tune from 6rh sting down how do you know if the low E or 6th string is in tune if what I'ma sling makes since
That's one more thing to break, more weight on the headstock, etc. Also, it limits some playing techniques when you actually turn a key while playing a string. It's actually been tried though, didn't do so well on the market....
I chose a BOSS TU-05 and it's a piece of Caca two of the strings won't work properly they show "E" for two of the strings. I've been playing since 1967 and usually just tune the strings to my piano but it's at my daughters at the moment so I need a proper tuner. There's always the Internet tuning sites I guess
As a new Guitarist I watched videos on Wood tone, string type, neck type, best picks, best pickups, best Guitar for rock sound and now what turner to use have i gone Guitar crazy or is this normal? lol
I've had mine for a couple years, and I don't think I've changed the battery yet ... It takes the standard CR2032, battery so it's the same size battery as larger tuners with larger screens
Dear Marty, Is there anyway you could do some Harry Chapin songs? They are my grandma's favorite and she's going through her treatments right now, so I'd really appreciate a Chapin video so I can play her a song she'll enjoy. Hoping you see this!
I have to disagree with the clip on tuner. Yes it’s picking up the vibrations, but from the headstock, not from the exact spot you are plucking the string. The vibrations in the headstock are not as accurate from where the pickups are on an electric, or on an acoustic guitar, where the sound is being amplified. I’d rather go with a phone tuning app right next to the stings you are playing, or a pedal.
Thanks again to D'Addario for sponsoring today's video! Get all your tuner needs at www.daddario.com/

I can see the acoustic sound-hole tuner falling into the body of the guitar along with all of my picks 😄
Marty my man I love your videos. I've learned so much from you.
Still won't make me sound good
😂…me either buddy
You will probably sound better, though!😬
No, that will come with more practice.
Practice Practice Practice Practice......
Every day!
Enjoy playing and learning more.
I play Doc Watson fingerpicking now.
Very happy where I'm at.
👍
Slow and methodical wins the race when it comes to learning guitar. So, if you don’t see any improvement in 30 days, perhaps at the end of 60 days you will.
Locking tuners is the way to go. I have switched almost all of my guitars to lockers....
Grover tuners are the best. You don't want to get stuck with the wrong tuners like Elmo or Big Bird
Thank you for what you do. I appreciate your style of teaching. After 40+ years, I'm finally trying to learn again. You're going to be a great help.
I didn't know there were already sayings to help remember string notes, so I created my own: Every Adult Donkey Gets Big Ears
Haha I love that brother! Hopefully you're still making good progress!
I use a Sabine ST-1500 AutoTuner, I've been using it for well over 25 years, it still works great today.
That micro D’Addario headstock tuner is a lifesaver. Highly recommend

I bought the rechargeable one recently and yea it's just better all around. The screen is quite nice for a tuner as well.
My issue with rechargeable is if it dies you are out of luck until it can be recharged. Batteries are quick. (Especially an issue with rechargeable flash lights 😂)

Hey Marty, thank you for the guitar tuner overview video. Appreciated!!
Have you taught the free bird solo? I can’t find it
Marty even has fun tuning his guitar 👍 I'm trying to figure out that harmonics thing when tuning up the guitar
I use and older d'addario pedal tuner, but my back up is a Snark clip on.
Micro sound hole tuner. Great gift for my John💙
Great channel.
Learn something new every time that I watch one of your vids.👍
Learned something today. Thanks
Loved the FreeBird you did. Sounded just like the original version. Great job
Hey Marty, the intro... Ouch. This is a great video. Thanks for sharing😉
Dang I’ve learned so much, including some things I wouldn’t have even thought of!
Visible tuners on headstocks don’t bother me
I have tried different types but keep going back to my Snark
But whatever brand, they are handy gadgets
Great informational video on tuning. As an experienced guitar player this video great for beginners.
Might have to check out the micro headstock tuner, I’ve been using guitartuna this whole time lol. Thanks Marty!
Marty please notice this. Can u learn and give a lesson on how to play rift by quarters of change 😊
I use the Nexxus 360. I like it (I've never used any other) I use it on acoustic guitar it seems to work fine.
I was having this problem last night!!!
The myth that locking tuners stay in tune is something I see often
Been playing for a long time I like the snark clip on
Question: Is the Daddarrio Sound Hole Tuner compatible with a sound hole pickup? Would you just slide it to one side of the pickup?
Marty can you make a tutorial on how to play Faithfully by Journey and how to play the epic solo at the end, if not its ok, i love your videos either way lol
Thanks Marty
All you have to do is get your low E in tune. You can tune the rest of your strings off that..

Nothing beats the convenience of using an app for tuning
I feel like with the god-awful microphone on phones, it wouldn't really pick up your tuning accurately.. i have used apps though just to be cheap and convenient, but I do trust hardware a lot more
@@ReizokoRyu i have used both as well and haven't noticed much of a difference
Marty your the best guitar RUclipsr by the way
Thanks! 😃

I use Guitarix to tune my guitar.
Direct to the computer through audio interface.
Marty for the love of god pls do a lost tutorial 🙏

It could’ve been set to something other than A440
Yes

I love the micro tuner I have them on all of my guitars and they are the only style tuner that will fit on my Martin Backpacker
Half of guitar playing is spent tuning the guitar. The other half is spent playing out of tune. 😄
Developing, we gotta tune it up.😜😅👌🏼
Thanks a lot! What is your opinion about digital tuners like the ones in simulating software such as AmpliTube or Guitar Rig?
Great lesson you motivate so many people to play guitar great videos you should do some lessons for three days grace and theory of a deadman I would love lessons for them
Will you please play somebody I used to know by Eliot smith
Best intro ever
Are tuning forks still reliable

People liked to hear Jerry tune his guitar. We just listened real hard for a clue as to what they were going to play next 🤣

Here's what I'm trying to ask if u don't have a tuner and you suppose to tune from 6rh sting down how do you know if the low E or 6th string is in tune if what I'ma sling makes since

Thank you.
Marty is legendary
Why is there not integrated tuners? Instead of twisting keys, why can’t there be a digital headstock that autotunes the strings?
That's one more thing to break, more weight on the headstock, etc. Also, it limits some playing techniques when you actually turn a key while playing a string. It's actually been tried though, didn't do so well on the market....
