Long story short the X-Ultra Pioneer tries to immitate the X-Ultra 3 but, for example, the inner sole here is just a foam layer and the midsole footbed is not the blue known from model 3 with the aditional protection and support. The Pioneer sole flexibility is the same as in the X-Ultra 4, the unacceptable successor of the ultimate X-Ultra 3, etc. No, the rubber compound is just the right one for outdoors terrain because if it was more sticky then it would wear out faster during use, it is the same compound as in X-Ultra 3 model and model 4, which developed further after the model 2 of the same series. But regarding the overall aspects of Pioneer, it is a very nice model if not the ultimate for mild terrain or commuting and yes, this wise, the rubber compound should be more grippy.
Comfort is subjective. I just returned a pair of Merrell Moab Speeds because I find them too cushy. I don't feel they support the bones in my feet and so they strain my feet. Couldn't walk on them all day.
My experience are similar to yours. I've tried a couple of other Salomon trail/hiking shoes and they felt really good initially. However after 8-10 miles in, they start to feel really stiff and I start getting hot spots potentially causing blisters. They feel great for walking around for a couple miles but I'm never going to wear them for my long distant hikes. When comparing them to other shoes, they're alright shoes. I've had worse shoes and better shoes. I like Topo and Altra shoes for hiking.
Nice thorough breakdown on the shoe. Also just to help with some questions, the shoe does not have a rock plate, the Advnanced Chasis technology that you mentioned refers to the heel cup that's integrated into the midsole of the shoe (you can see it says Advanced Chasis on the side), and it has been noted by a good few peeps to be a narrow shoe as well. I would recommend going for the wide X Ultra 3 or 4, heck even the standard width X Ultra 3 has been said to be wider if you wanna try that.
OK. In later videos I state that it does have a rockplate. I thought I read that it did have one. In any case it provides plenty of protection underfoot. I will definitely try the X Ultra 4. I really want to like Salomon but I keep striking out.
enjoyed your breakdown. i am constantly amazed at how much praise Salomon hiking shoes and boots get. I don't understand it. I've returned every single pair of Salomon hiking shoes and boots for every reason you mentioned for the x ultra pioneer (aero optional, just denotes not waterproof), but mainly fit (although many models come in wider versions) and performance.
Some of them seem hit or miss. I've been wearing salomons for a while now and absolutely love them I've had no problems with them at all but hey maybe I just got lucky or something.
You say you like the x ultra 4, right? I got the waterproof version of the the pioneer and experience the some of the same issues as you. My biggest issue, though is with the toe box being tight on top. Have you experienced the 4 fitting better?
Those laces come undone because you don't tie them correctly. You tie a granny knot. It's evident from the axis of your loops aligned with the length of your shoes instead of perpendicular to it. Pull up the Ted Talk on how to tie your shoes correctly.
I don't think its good practice to use your own body to test the grip performance because the subject can be biased (unconscious bias) and might affect the measurements.I'll be testing these ones soon but if you ask me how they feel I might be a bit biased because the old Salomon I had lasted more than 6 years and I had to throw them away to force myself get a new pair.
Tienes razón. Me enforme del precio de un laboratorio y cuesta mucho. Lo que hago yo es ofrecer informaciones relativas sobre los zapatos. Son sempre informaciones filtradas por mis opiniones.

It's an informative, if not subtly confusing, review. I'm just not sure whether you consider it "a phenomenal shoe" or you don't like it. 🤔
Hahaha. Too true. I guess I want to like it but I don’t. I think my main issue is that the last does not fit my foot as well as it should.

How would this compare to Keen Targhee Vent? Salomons have a softer sole than keen? Thanks!

I find every salomon shoe I get to be comfortable, I have narrow feet
Your grip test doesn't match what a hiker is use for. Your garage is a shop setting.
Can you do dic one x ultra 4 by Salomon thank for
I am purchasing them this week. Video will be out by the new year. Testing takes a month.
Is this model close to x ultra 3 ?
I don’t know.
Yes identical except the laces

Bad shoes. It is not solid.
They are crappie. Don't buy!
