- This video is about Michiel de Ruyter, a Dutch naval leader who was very good at his job. He played a large role in the Netherlands keeping its existence in a time where everyone would have preferred that they didn't.

The number of times I had to correct myself after saying "Br*tish" was concerningly high
Pavelic, Norris, then probably Strom Thurmond because I have a fun(?) idea for the narration style. Have a great day :)
Ruyter is an old dutch word word horse rider which is also often used instead of the word knight. i would be suprised if he wasnt knighted. but im pretty confident that thats where he got his name. rider>ruyter>rijder.
Hey dutchie here. Ruiter name. Its meaning is rider. At least in modern dutch. However i do understand the confusion as ruiters(Riders)(People on horseback). Where often deployed as raiding troops.
@@channel_lurker he probably wasnt knighted. For the sole reason nobody was at the time. We where a republic back then. So no knights. We did have old nobles of course. And they could keep their empty titles if they just acted normally. He would probably have gotten a lot of medals and honors though.
@@TheSegert de ruiter wasnt his title it was his last name ^^ yea his last name meant ruiter=ridder=ridder=knight. but i can understand your confusion :)
het is hier ook een chocolade merk trouwens :)))
@@TheSegert lol just saw my old comment. yea de ruiter was his last name not his title. he probebly had an ancestor who was a rider/knight and inherited his title as a last name. also the practise of being knighted has been weird through the ages. from being a word too describe anyone on a horse too being a noble title, so it could go eather way.
maar wel weer typisch om een nederlander tegen te komen in de comments :P
en de ruiter is om op te eten!
“Tijdverdrijf” made me laugh out loud. It literally translates to “killing time”. Probably because they were bored to death sailing from location to location. This is a great example of Dutch humor.
hahaha not just that, but "verdrijf" sounds a bit like "drijven", which means "to float". It's good word play!
Your pronunciation of de Ruiter is close! For someone who does not speak Dutch I would say it pretty good :D
Dr. Quest?
How does this channel not have more subs , this channel a hidden gem
The story of how one merchant captain embarrassed the British, the Swedes, the Spaniards and pirates ! The captain of all captains
And the French
@@drpepper3838 The French killled him at Agosta, what humiliation?😅
@lollius88 you clearly didn't watch the video. He won all 4 naval battles against the combined English/French fleet in the third anglo dutch war. Also the French left the Mediterranean so his mission was still achieved.
@lollius88 and technily he was killed by his own king. They wanted him gone because he was too successful. He gained to much of a following. So they send him on a mission with badly maintained smaller ships than usual. Only THEN they managed to kill him.
@@drpepper3838 You don't really have any proof that the leadership set him up.
The Republic was in a bad spot with the Rampjaar of 1672, so it is likely that they were at a deficit of sailors.
Also, The French fleet barely did any of the fighting in the tactically inconclusive battles of Texel, Schooneveld etc.
The French humiliated de Ruyter by repelling him from Martinique.
The English also humiliated him by repelling him from Barbados.
He really isnt the invincible admiral you think him as.
The French after killing De Ruyter at Agosta launched a surprise attack on the Dutch-Spanish fleet anchored off Palermo killing the Dutch and Spanish Admiral Jan de Haen and Diego de Ibarra.
The French withdrew from Sicily without a fight with their fleet intact.
I find it funny how much in common admiral Michiel de Ruyter and admiral Yi Sun-sin have.
Both started their militairy career in the army.
Both fought against an enemy that was stronger than them.
Both fought out numbered.
Both defeated enemies trough strategic and tactical means.
Both fought in a war that almost ended their countries.
Both died in battle.
Both helped create something for their navies (Yi with the turtle ship and Michiel with the dutch marine corps)
I'd say Admiral Yi is still superior mostly because de Ruyter didn't get ass fucked by his country own fucking beaurocracy and corruption
Couldn't have told his story any better. Thanks dude
I think the name just is Ruiter spelled in old dutch, which means rider
No it comes from ruiten/ to rout, he made the enemy rout.
1:59 - I love how you include the Kantai Collection representation of the WWII-era Dutch Light Cruiser De Ruyter.
I think this is the most unfunny thing ever but i just have to say it, GEKOLONISEERD.
Mijn jongen
Hahaha heel grappig meneer… NU GEEF ME JE FUCKING KERRY POEDER
Mijn boi
Landgenoten,
Angelsaksen zijn jaloers op onze sjieke vehikels,
en De Ruyter maakt gestampt muisjes van hun testikels.
zeg makker, je bent heft gekoloniseerd
Another banger. I eagerly await every time I see the notification pop up :)
sailor: "my god, both the french and the english navy are here. we wont survive this!!"
Ruyter: "hold my beer"
Bestevaer is a title of honour. Maybe Bestevaer means great leader of the navy since he got the title after the great victory during the 3rd Anglo-Dutch war defeating both the English and French
Sounds to me as Best Sail. That is if directly translated from old dutch to new and to English
Bestevear Means grandfather or good father in old dutch. It was indeed a title of honour. Only 2 people had this title. Lieutenant admiral maarten tromp and michiel de ruyter. Maarten tromp was actually the father of cornelis tromp, the second in command you see in this video.
@@drpepper3838 that Maarten tromp got it and title of honor I knew, but thanks for the info on what it really means
The Tromp on the navy ship is actually named after the father of the guy who fucked up and he was the guy that died when he was offered command first 🙂
Don't spread lies. The guy who was offered command and died was Jacob van wassenaar obdam
"Died at 69 years old"
NICE
Dutch vs. Spanish
English vs. Dutch
English and French vs. Dutch
Danes and Norwegians vs. Swedes
Why didn't these naval powers just settle their differences with beer pong and trade agreements?
Because we are European. We wanna fight
They eventually did but so many different nations trading creates rivalries, rivalries turn into wars.
Best content about this man I found on RUclips so far. You deserve more subscribers and views, bro. Just keep making great contents of good quality just like this, and eventually history nerds like us will find this channel. We are expecting more and more golden contents like this, also covering world political history from Sri Lanka. Good Luck!
Michiel was his first name and ruyter meant ruiter defenision: soldier on horse
Sadly ruyter does not mean raider but it means jockey like a horse jockey
Ruyten is old dutch for raiding
I like your videos! Would it be too much to ask for a video on Xavier I, the Carlost claimant to the Spanish throne?
Hello, lovely video comming from a Dutch person but there is one little detail with the modern navy ships you showed. Tromp was the guy who was in command of the Dutch navy before he got killed and replaced by de Ruyter. His son (also tromp) then made the stupid mistake in that one battle so the modern ships called tromp mainly bear the name of the father not necessarily the son
His son was also a very capable Admiral apart from that mistake
@@5thMilitia Ofcourse but his father has a better legacy imo
@@maurits1249 True but Tromp 2.0 wasn't a bad commander either. He crushed the Swedish in the Battle of Öland
I'd love to see more of these medieval/early modern history people!
english : about
Canadian : aboooot
Nice video, very sweet
The dutch word Ruyter has the samen origin as the english word "rider". Meaning horseback rider, or Ruiter in modern Dutch.
De Ruyter gave himself that name because his brother adopted that name as a soldier. It means Horseman.
If you ain't Dutch, you ain't much.
Ruyter is the old dutch word voor ruiter, which means a person who rides a horse. Why he was given this nickname, idfk. Probably because he was agile and quick in battle or something?
Probably meant cavarly back then, 'ruiters' now are more of a symbolic thing
so
a rider?
did you watch the dutch movie about him?
6:43 nooooooo not the sneek 😢
Will you eventually get a patreon and/or is it possible to commission videos?
Possibly? Haven't really given it much thought since I am a pretty small channel and money isn't a huge concern yet. Maybe in the future but as of right now idk
You can always just suggest what you want covered and I'll try to get to it eventually. If you need a specific video for something important then I can always fast track it. Commissioning isn't necessary
@@Spartan761 Okay! I was ready to just throw some money at you to see videos on people like Lyndon LaRouche, Howard Scott (of Technocracy Inc), and Gino Perente (of NATLFED) to throw some more 'left-leaning' groups into the mix. The crazy thing is most of these organizations are still around and trying to be of influence (NATLFED less so since it's just a cult)
I also just enjoy your videos and would want to make them financially advantageous.
Can you make something with Konstantin Rodzaevsky?
He's soon, there's just a few videos before him first
@@Spartan761 Glad to hear that!
Yoooo this dood
not just one of. It was the most powerful
Not for very long tho, they took the title off the Spanish who had it since 1492 and became no.1 naval power from 1607 to about 1702 or so. And then it was the English from 1710s to 1920s
@lollius88 doesn't matter we still humiliated every bigger country on sea we came across
@@drpepper3838 No you didn't, you only defeated and overtook Spain.
You won a few engagements here and there against the French and English/ but they still overtook. ( the english specifically became the new naval power ).
Only your nationalistic nonsense makes you think you were better than everyone else?
You want me to name some of your humiliations ??
Ever heard of kentish knock? The Gabbard? Scheveningen? St james day battle? Lowestoft? Camperdown? Raid on batavia? Raid on griesse? Battle of landguard fort? Battle of barbados??
These are all English victories btw, if i start listing French ones, you will be crying tears 😂😂
5:09 still better than fr**ch
De Ruyter fought 27 battles at sea (16 against the English) of which he won by far most.
So in order to be complete, you have to do some more research I guess?
The Dutch language is a mean joke we play on foreigners just to annoy the everliving shit out of them. Try "'s Hertogenbosch".
I was told de Ruyter means the router, meaning he routs the enemy, to defeat an enemy completely and force them to run away
Ah tijdverdrijd , in other words translated , pastime .
do a video on jackie arlov, the half black nazi mercenary
Fr do George Wallace.
bro fix youre pronunciation, its michiel not michieyieyieyiel anyways. de ruiter doesnt mean raider but someone on a horse
so
a
RIDER?
GEKOLONIZEERD
