  • This video is about Henrique Teixeira Lott, the Brazilian Marshal who saved Brazilian democracy (at least temporarily). He was a cut above the rest and one of the few Brazilian army men who still believed in the republic, even as it fell to a military junta.

Just as a footnote, the Quadros guy (president who resigned) banned cassinos, condecorated Che Guevara (though he was aligned with the west) and ordered an invasion of French Guyana to be planned and carried out, the scheduled date was only a couple of weeks after his resignation. There are more quirks about the guy but I think these are top notch

    Adding to your video content:
Lott was a part of the Sorbonne school line (the ones who believe that the Army only should be part of politics to fix fucced up things quickly like he did - The White Coup, Lott did a military intervention to guarantee the elections that elected Juscelino Kubitschek). The Sorbonne were a line of officers that tried to fought against Linha-Dura (Hard-Line), the line of officers formed in schools like Fort Leavensworth, backed up by the US military.
The Linha Dura won politically into the army and did the coup in 1964.
The first military president - Humberto de Alencar Castello Branco - was Sorbonne and tried to minimize the militarism into politics after he left the presidency.
Castello Branco passed the presidency to Artur da Costa e Silva, of Linha Dura, and this mf made a constitution that legitimized the coup.
Castello Branco - for the record, a Field Marshall - then tried to perform political actions to stop the Linha Dura but his plane was shot down by an air force fighter and his death was archived until today.
Edna Lott tried too to fight against Linha Dura but you guys saw in this video what happened...

I know this video is 2 years old but I believe you (and many others who have uploaded videos about Lott) have missed the opportunity to address a few less likeable characteristics of the man.
The Brazilian Armed Forces from 1889 and onwards have always had a tendency to intervene in political/social affairs. Whether to opress certain movements or to literally overthrow the nation's government.
It should be made clear that no general (and I really mean it) from the Brazilian army past the imperial period should be viewed with any bit of respect.
Ever since the coup that abolished the monarchy in Brazil, the Armed Forces have always been clinging to power beneath the shadows in more ways than one. Lott, like his fellow other generals from the republic, was no different from the traitors that overthrew the nation's constitutional monarchy in 1889. Despite sources claiming he was a staunch 'legalist', the man cared little about the 1930 revolution that resulted in Getulio Vargas climbing to power. Where was Lott in 1937, when Vargas decided to stage yet another coup to remain in power?
Interesting how despite his legalist fame, he completely ignored all the chaos brewing within the the nation for over a decade and only acted upon being called to act in 1945, assisting in the deposition of Getulio Vargas.
There was a reason for JK to closely align himself with Lott. JK knew that having a general whom was extremely popular with the army would give him the ample opportunity to make as many drastic measures as he could without fearing opposition. Why? Because he could just call Lott to opress them. Lott was literally a dog tied to a leech during the entire time of JK's government, and I am not even going to mention the whole fiasco of him acting to ensure JK's seat in the presidency. There's a wild misconception that the UDN (the party of Juarez Távora, the candidate who landed in 2nd place during the 1955 presidential elections) was openly plotting against the government in order to nullify the victory of JK. The truth is that they were simply dumbfounded that Juscelino was considered the victor, considering the man barely got over 35% of the popular vote; much less than a majority and extremely close to the 2nd place's performance. Most of the party, including Carlos Lacerda and Tavora wanted a runoff to happen, not a coup to prevent him from becoming president.
The fact Lott was immediately 'convinced' to act in order to 'preserve the constitution' (aka literally couping the incumbent government) upon hearing the news that colonel Mamede wouldn't be punished for his speech where be openly spoke ill of the electoral victory JK is baffling. The man certainly knew that resigning from his position as Minister of War would spark a frenzy within the Armed Forces, and he would use that for his advantage when he and others alike began planning the intervention that lead to Carlos Luz being impeached.
During the intervention, a battleship by the name of Tamandaré would sail off in the Bay of Guanabara. Carlos Luz, Silvio Heck, an admiral for the Brazilian Navy and commander of the ship, and figures like Carlos Lacerda, Mamede and alike would all be greeted by artillery fire straight to their ship from Army troops stationed in forts at Rio. The bullets landed scaringly close to the ship, but they chose not to fire back.
This unprovoked aggression could've sparked a literal civil war, all because the incompentent Army decided to fire at a ship of their nation's navy for... political reasons? Thank you, Brazilian Armed Forces.
And besides, even the impeachment process itself was foul, as various sources claimed Lott pressured the congress to side with the army and impeach Luz. He was literally cornering the president and forcing the parliament to kick him out. I am pretty sure this can't be considered legalism, especially when you consider there was little to no evidence to prove that Carlos Luz and Café Filho were legitimately conspiring against the recent elections.
But that isn't it. Upon Luz's impeachment, Café Filho was scheduled to be reinstated as president, a sentiment shared even by those who were in support of Lott's coup; as it was Filho's constitutional right to assume the presidency once more.
However, to their surprise, Lott simply decided to say f*** it and sent a whole squad of troops to monitor Filho's residence, and then the government decided to declare a state of siege, something which resulted in Cafe Filho being unable to reassume the presidency, an action further backed by the Supreme Court's approval. With everything said and done, Nereu Ramos (former president of the brazillian house of senate) would become the interim president until JK's eventual inauguration.
After ALL of this, Lott would re-secure his seat as the Minister of War of Brazil, doing all kinds of trickery to silence the opposition during JK's government who decided to bankrupt the nation in order to construct a modernist, nightmarish husk of a capital we now know as Brasília.
Finishing his term and leaving Brazil with high inflation, high government debts, a degraded railroad structure due to an unprecedented focus on cars, JK decided to pick Lott as his successor, only because he had an interest in coming back for the 1965 elections.
Then obviously as you may know, Lott lost. Horribly. He was hilariously bad at giving speeches, often stuttering and just saying outright nonsense. Not to mention his running mate was pratically Getulio Vargas' heir. The hypocrisy of being paired up and endorsing a staunch Vargas supporter after literally helping in overthrowing that man just a decade and a half prior is crazy.. so, Jânio Quadros won, resigned, Goulart assumed, and the rest is history.
Oh yeah, did I mention Lott married his own cousin? No? Well, now you know. Her name was Antonieta Duffles Teixeira de Andrade. Just had to throw this in here somewhere. I am not brazillian, so pardon any misinformation. I just believe people from Brazil should learn to not put their faith in Armed Forces after what they did over a century ago.

Overall the video was pretty good, but you did not do justice to the hardliners here. Although Marshal Lott surely is a virtous man for stading for the constitution and law, the situation in 1964 was entirely different from 1955. The communist´s attempts at thwarting the nation goes as far back as 35, when they sullied their hands with the blood of their own countrymen. That João Goulart and Luís Prestes were being suported by the Soviet Union is a fact, and certainly the CIA must have had it´s own members supporting the hardliners too. But I wonder, why is it so bad to have the USA intervene in local politics in South America to safeguard freedom, but the Soviets trying to spread communism is overlooked or entirely ignored? That isn´t just in the slightest.
I salute all the Americans working in their Armed Forces, in the CIA and in their goverment during the Cold War, who gave their lives to save the world from the vicious ideology that is Marxism. Thank you for saving Brazil, my country, in it´s darkest hour: If one day the shining city upon a hill lose it´s light, I will spare no effort to light up it´s torch back again, even if I need to face my own death!
