The war also led to the creation of the first favela when the government refused to pay the soldiers that had crushed canudos who while waiting for pay encamped on the morro of the favela in Rio behind the ministry of defence, thus creating the first favela in Brazil's history

A Brazilian captain with nationalist inspirations who became leftist after witnessing the poverty and chaos in Gaza during the Suez Crisis. He became a critic of the army's defense of the bourgeoisie and after the military coup of 1964, he became 100% communist. Leading guerrilla operations against the government.
