My dad gifted me a GLS sierra from 1990 , it was the car of a lady that only put 40.000km on it and then it stayed in the garage from 1999 to 2015 when my dad got it , it has 89.000km in present and its still running properly with no rust and being taken care of by me and my dad who's been a mechanic for 30 years. Never had a problem with her and still runs like new ,i think she might be one of a kind by how good shes been treated. The Sierra is from sweden.

My dad bought a 1990 Sapphire GLS from Vospers of Plymouth back in the day. it was a fleet car. We knew a guy who worked there and we got it for £4100. Considerably less than retail value...but still a lot of money for my dad. :) H344BTT it was a burgundy colour with the dark grey stonechip bottom half. No alloys or rear spoiler, quite stealthy in fact but that 2.0 DOHC engine was a peach. So much better than the 2.0 it replaced. 'Only' 125bhp but a very usable amount of torque. 3rd and 4th on B roads was so much fun. When dad came to sell it, it had over 150k on it but I knew I had to have it and bought it for £1000. I was young so obviously painted the callipers yellow and put 205/50 R15 5-spoke alloys on it. lol. Really a wonderful car to own, drive and work on. When I upgraded a few years later, I gave it to my Brother-in-law with 180k on it. He was a biker at heart so obviously soon needed to fit a new clutch and brake pads to it ;) but kept it for a couple years more. The car I upgraded to was a 1996 4-door Mondeo 2.0 Si. On paper better in every department but I never felt the same driving it like I did with the old Sapphire.

@@cornishcarcollectors Yep, really enjoyed it thanks. The bodged door repair was done by my Mum in order to make it look more presentable for sale while I was overseas. It had been damaged around the locks (as many 90s Fords had been) before I owned it and had some plastic stick-on lock protectors, but after a few years parked up under cover in my parents garage it was looking a bit worse for wear with bubbly rust around the lock barrels. I needed to sell it to help fund a career change, but still miss it! The “bee sting” antenna was because the integrated heated rear screen antenna wouldn’t play nice with the RDS radio and the sunroof handle surround was changed to add the map lights because we’d do a lot of driving overnight and my wife would want to read - although as soon as I’d cut the headlining I very much regretted it. TBH I’m very glad to see it returned to new condition (although I still don’t really like the Cosworth black stripe on the spoiler - though I know some were delivered like that and it was in the brochure image). The 92/93 GLS spec cars were pretty rare - I owned 3 Sierras, and this one was by far the best. If Graham still has it, and ever wants to sell it, he’s probably still got my email somewhere ;-)

I had a 2000E as my 2nd car back when i was 20 years old.. Flint grey over moonstone blue.. G42 ALL. mine was the 5 speed manual.. early pre cat model.. absolutely loved it.. My neighbour has an early sapphire GLSi which i thought looked the nuts..

Beautiful! I myself have a 1989 also with the DOHC unit, it really has a characteristic sound, and mine sounds exactly like this one! Beautiful GLS that is! We never really had GLS in Denmark
We had a 1991 Sapphire GLSi. Poppy Red I think it was. H304CDS We were hit head on by a lorry in Dec 1997 doing 60mph over a red light. I was 11 and the front seat passenger. That hurt! The car was done. On my side everything was pushed back to the screen, door was folded out, roof creased, footwell in the back was pushed up, gearstick in the radio, bonnet about 75 mtrs down the road, my knees hit the glovebox so hard it detached into my footwell showering me with cassettes ( gotta love the 90s ). Moms head hit the steering wheel and was then pinned in, had to be cut out. I managed to climb out over the front seats that had been pushed together and managed to get out the drivers side rear. I remember standing over the front end and it just wasnt there anymore, the big chuck of metal with efi on it sticking up disconnected. Still got the scar's. In 2006 I got hold of a Sapphire LX in wedgwood blue, loved it. There's a third style of dash by the way. Its got the new bottom side on it with the old top. Think they went from 1989 - 1991. The ones with those in have the different door cards, basically the normal cloth card with a small rectangle of the interior for the seats on it.

Oddly, the hatch still had metal rain channels in the roof, the Sapphire didn't. The 2000E still had Ghia badges on the front wing (although not seen in the image here). IMO, the rarest Sierra could well be the 2.9i GLS 4x4. They were made for such a short period that it never appeared in any Ford brochures.
My old man was a fleet buyer for a large food company (wasn’t really his job - he was to do with packaging, he just did this as well) and got invited to a focus group where I think a few early shapes and finishes were on show to see how they were received. It was an evening bash somewhere. I think this was in 1986. I know that by chance a good few months later, we were at some motorway services maybe around Hertfordshire (we lived in Cheshire) and when we cane out there was a burgundy Sierra with a back end all covered in black plastic and heavily disguised and that’s when my Dad piped up that it was what he went to see months previously. I was about ten at the time and it all seemed very clandestine! The old man has long since bitten the dust sadly so can’t get it straight from the horse’s mouth, but my recollection of it is fairly solid - times may be out though!

The GLS was originally the mk1 2.0iS The 87/89 spec had those special hub caps and two tone paint 90 spec got the updated facelift That car should have come with the 3 spoke steering wheel as the 92 spec car and abs as standard from that year Also, it's a 92 car, just registered as a K plate Nice car to keep on the road though, and I'm glad the saggy mirrors got sorted 👍

I’m loving your videos! Again this has evoked some great memories. I remember lots of people buying Sapphires on camp in Germany in the 90’s. Also one in particular in silver which had a full RS bodykit with a 1.8. Also had a mate with a black lhd GLS equivalent that went extremely well. He’s done a lovely job with this, fair play to him.

I had a J plate Sierra 2.0i GT in a gorgeous unique metallic blue, that I’ve never seen again on any other Ford (can’t remember the name of it) for 5 years. Sold it in 2001 for just £1200 when it was still in lovely condition, which I regret. I should never have sold it, it was a lovely car & they are ultra rare now.

Hello from France. You bemoan the rarity of those cars. Just imagine how much rarer and forgotten they are in France! An yet, a 1992 2.0 three-door has appeared in the classified ads, some weeks ago. I am very much tempted to think that this Ford chassis could be just as much fun to drive at low speed through the hills and the twisties as a more modern Toyota GT-86. Would you be so kind as to direct me to a specialist's shop that sells suspension bits. I am not looking for radical mods, mind you. Just to cure the understeering tendency of the Sierra. Alas, no one knows how to do that, in France. Thank you so much.

The 3-door second generation Sierra was not offered in the UK; the 5-door hatchback and estate, and 4-door Sapphire (saloon) were the only models sold in the UK (in right-hand-drive). As for suspension upgrades, I am sorry to say that I do not know how to direct you. Personally, I try to keep these cars as original as possible and use Sierras 'R' Us for parts supply. I know my Sierra Sapphire Cosworth has aftermarket Koni suspension, which drives well. Good luck with your purchase and thanks for for watching.

Hi there I bought originally two Sierra Sapphires one was a GL and GLS i both were blue different Blues 1988 and 1992. The two litre double overhead cam engine was lovely. Sadly a hit and run drive put my car into spares or repairs or car salvage.. But in my driving ownership I've had many fords. 4 Escorts MK 1 71/GT 1.3 /1.1 /L 74 and 82 1.6 Ghia and a 2000 W van. 1 Fiesta 1.1 96 3 Cortina's MK3 2000E 1976 2.3 GL auto Estate 1978 and 2.0 Crusader Auto. 4 Mondeo's 94 1.8 GLTD 1.8LX auto and 2003 Graphite 1.8 with a 2005 2.2 TDI Titanium. Ford Capri 2.0 S 1979 And last My Ford Transit high top 2014 2.2Tdi van.. Enjoyed this video too much. Only wish my dad had fords in his lifetime. I know my Sister has owning to date just two fiestas a red 1988 2 door 1.1 popular and her latest owned car a blue 65 plate metallic blue 1.2.

Great cars,that one looks great now.dohc stood for double overhead cam tho not direct cam.it was a nice smooth engine,not as robust as the pinto tho.look forward to more sierra content.

I don’t know if any of you Cosie fans recall the old XR4x4 or the 2 litre 4x4 that myself and a mate owned. The saloon was a few years newer than the XR4 but we had a lot of fun comparing them. The Cosie was on a par with the XR4 also the Ford dealer told me that the 4 wheel drive system only worked when accelerating. It worked just fine for me living in the country side dealing with mud, snow and ice. Before any egg heads decide to have some rant please know this I was told my facts in the early 90’s before some of your moms were even borne. So I will most likely ignore it because I can lol

Looks really smart. But don’t forget the very late sapphires had colour coded rear spoiler. And the purists will spot the battery should be a square post 🙈 Additional spec for high series Sierra and sapphire for 92 facelift was the introduction of the rear courtesy light and time delay switch off. Something that is standard on everything now but was a nice addition 30 years ago. I really do need to buy up and buy some sort of Sierra and relive my childhood😂

@@cornishcarcollectors basically all my childhood my dad had Sierra’s with a few Granada/Scorpio Granada’s in the mix also. He has basically every version Sierra petrol and diesel incl a first edition G plate 2000E but never a XR or RS sadly. Although the 2000E did have a Cosworth kit fitted after a while. So I would always help him on weekends cleaning the car and it was my job to hoover it out and clean the dash etc. So I would be in the car basically all Saturday afternoon so it was ready for him to go and work in the evening (taxi driver). As a result I ended up knowing the cars inside and out and ended up quite fond of them. Just that the cars I see for sale have wrong bumpers on etc for the year. So a 92 onwards car with a painted pre 92 bumper on and the seller asking top money and it sends me in the wrong direction 😂 I’ve seen the sapphire Cosworth video and I’m looking forward to more and I’ll have a look at the XR4x4 video. I do like the late spec XR4x4 even with the late 15” wheels for all 92 on 4x4 chassis cars

My friend had a k reg 2.0 GLSi and I just remember it being a real fast car, but probably not by todays standards! Lovely example though, worth keeping I reckon. Probably be worth 100k in 10 years time being a old ford!! 🤣
Thank for the comment. The GLS was a desirable car and the most 'sport's trimmed' Sapphire you could get outside of a Cosworth. Today it holds its own in traffic, but not quick. I agree the GLS will continue to rise in price, consistent with all Fords, but not sure this will ever be a 'big money' car. Thanks for the comment Simon. Lots of Sierras went into minicab service, in fact a local cab driver to me often talks about how good they were as taxis. As for not understanding the attraction and now classic status of the Sierra, I think something which makes the classic car enthusiast scene so interesting is the diverse opinions and interest different people have in different cars - personally, I would not save any Volkswagens / Audis and the like, but I love to see them at the shows, all clean and on display, clearly the pride and joy of their owners. I had one exactly the same, white reg J312YEV excellent car, averaged over 100 miles an hour travelling from calisthenics to dusseldord on autobahn .

Oddly, the hatch still had metal rain channels in the roof, the Sapphire didn't.
The 2000E still had Ghia badges on the front wing (although not seen in the image here).
IMO, the rarest Sierra could well be the 2.9i GLS 4x4. They were made for such a short period that it never appeared in any Ford brochures.

My old man was a fleet buyer for a large food company (wasn’t really his job - he was to do with packaging, he just did this as well) and got invited to a focus group where I think a few early shapes and finishes were on show to see how they were received. It was an evening bash somewhere. I think this was in 1986. I know that by chance a good few months later, we were at some motorway services maybe around Hertfordshire (we lived in Cheshire) and when we cane out there was a burgundy Sierra with a back end all covered in black plastic and heavily disguised and that’s when my Dad piped up that it was what he went to see months previously. I was about ten at the time and it all seemed very clandestine! The old man has long since bitten the dust sadly so can’t get it straight from the horse’s mouth, but my recollection of it is fairly solid - times may be out though!

The GLS was originally the mk1 2.0iS
The 87/89 spec had those special hub caps and two tone paint
90 spec got the updated facelift
That car should have come with the 3 spoke steering wheel as the 92 spec car and abs as standard from that year
Also, it's a 92 car, just registered as a K plate
Nice car to keep on the road though, and I'm glad the saggy mirrors got sorted 👍
Thanks for the comment. You are right about the steering wheel being a three-spoke, but as the Sierra was nearing the end of its production a four-spoke found its way on lots of the final cars (I still have the four-spoke on my XR4x4). Thanks for watching.

I’m loving your videos! Again this has evoked some great memories. I remember lots of people buying Sapphires on camp in Germany in the 90’s. Also one in particular in silver which had a full RS bodykit with a 1.8. Also had a mate with a black lhd GLS equivalent that went extremely well. He’s done a lovely job with this, fair play to him.

92 and 93 cars actually had colour coded rear spolier lips, so it was right originally 👍

You are quite right, the latest Sierra Sapphires had fully body-coloured spoilers so it was correct pre-paintwork... albeit they look better with the black lip.

I had a J plate Sierra 2.0i GT in a gorgeous unique metallic blue, that I’ve never seen again on any other Ford (can’t remember the name of it) for 5 years. Sold it in 2001 for just £1200 when it was still in lovely condition, which I regret. I should never have sold it, it was a lovely car & they are ultra rare now.

Hello from France. You bemoan the rarity of those cars. Just imagine how much rarer and forgotten they are in France! An yet, a 1992 2.0 three-door has appeared in the classified ads, some weeks ago. I am very much tempted to think that this Ford chassis could be just as much fun to drive at low speed through the hills and the twisties as a more modern Toyota GT-86. Would you be so kind as to direct me to a specialist's shop that sells suspension bits. I am not looking for radical mods, mind you. Just to cure the understeering tendency of the Sierra. Alas, no one knows how to do that, in France. Thank you so much.

The 3-door second generation Sierra was not offered in the UK; the 5-door hatchback and estate, and 4-door Sapphire (saloon) were the only models sold in the UK (in right-hand-drive).
As for suspension upgrades, I am sorry to say that I do not know how to direct you. Personally, I try to keep these cars as original as possible and use Sierras 'R' Us for parts supply. I know my Sierra Sapphire Cosworth has aftermarket Koni suspension, which drives well.

Hi there I bought originally two Sierra Sapphires one was a GL and GLS i both were blue different Blues 1988 and 1992.
The two litre double overhead cam engine was lovely.
Sadly a hit and run drive put my car into spares or repairs or car salvage..
But in my driving ownership I've had many fords.
4 Escorts MK 1 71/GT 1.3 /1.1 /L 74 and 82 1.6 Ghia and a 2000 W van.
1 Fiesta 1.1 96
3 Cortina's MK3 2000E 1976 2.3 GL auto Estate 1978 and 2.0 Crusader Auto.
4 Mondeo's 94 1.8 GLTD 1.8LX auto and 2003 Graphite 1.8 with a 2005 2.2 TDI Titanium.
Ford Capri 2.0 S 1979
And last My Ford Transit high top 2014 2.2Tdi van..

Great cars,that one looks great now.dohc stood for double overhead cam tho not direct cam.it was a nice smooth engine,not as robust as the pinto tho.look forward to more sierra content.

I don’t know if any of you Cosie fans recall the old XR4x4 or the 2 litre 4x4 that myself and a mate owned. The saloon was a few years newer than the XR4 but we had a lot of fun comparing them. The Cosie was on a par with the XR4 also the Ford dealer told me that the 4 wheel drive system only worked when accelerating. It worked just fine for me living in the country side dealing with mud, snow and ice. Before any egg heads decide to have some rant please know this I was told my facts in the early 90’s before some of your moms were even borne. So I will most likely ignore it because I can lol

Looks really smart. But don’t forget the very late sapphires had colour coded rear spoiler. And the purists will spot the battery should be a square post 🙈
Additional spec for high series Sierra and sapphire for 92 facelift was the introduction of the rear courtesy light and time delay switch off. Something that is standard on everything now but was a nice addition 30 years ago.
I really do need to buy up and buy some sort of Sierra and relive my childhood😂

@@cornishcarcollectors basically all my childhood my dad had Sierra’s with a few Granada/Scorpio Granada’s in the mix also. He has basically every version Sierra petrol and diesel incl a first edition G plate 2000E but never a XR or RS sadly. Although the 2000E did have a Cosworth kit fitted after a while. So I would always help him on weekends cleaning the car and it was my job to hoover it out and clean the dash etc. So I would be in the car basically all Saturday afternoon so it was ready for him to go and work in the evening (taxi driver). As a result I ended up knowing the cars inside and out and ended up quite fond of them. Just that the cars I see for sale have wrong bumpers on etc for the year. So a 92 onwards car with a painted pre 92 bumper on and the seller asking top money and it sends me in the wrong direction 😂
I’ve seen the sapphire Cosworth video and I’m looking forward to more and I’ll have a look at the XR4x4 video. I do like the late spec XR4x4 even with the late 15” wheels for all 92 on 4x4 chassis cars

A lot of these did not make as they were used as parts cars or re shells to repair written off Sapphire Cosworths!

My friend had a k reg 2.0 GLSi and I just remember it being a real fast car, but probably not by todays standards! Lovely example though, worth keeping I reckon. Probably be worth 100k in 10 years time being a old ford!! 🤣
Thank for the comment. The GLS was a desirable car and the most 'sport's trimmed' Sapphire you could get outside of a Cosworth. Today it holds its own in traffic, but not quick. I agree the GLS will continue to rise in price, consistent with all Fords, but not sure this will ever be a 'big money' car. Thanks for the comment Simon. Lots of Sierras went into minicab service, in fact a local cab driver to me often talks about how good they were as taxis. As for not understanding the attraction and now classic status of the Sierra, I think something which makes the classic car enthusiast scene so interesting is the diverse opinions and interest different people have in different cars - personally, I would not save any Volkswagens / Audis and the like, but I love to see them at the shows, all clean and on display, clearly the pride and joy of their owners.
