Well they are making a steel/metal gun and mostly aimed for boutique/competition users. I am hoping Laugo didn't patent the design and this will hopefully soon allow other manufacturers to try coming up with under barrel designs. I recall the only main issue people said with the Alien was the frame would heat up quickly like a rifle, so CCW'ing would become a slight issue. I would think for an underbarrel design would require any top slide to have porting to help with cool-off.
It's good to see more companies getting involved with 5.7. I would love to see a steel framed model with CZ SP-01-inspired ergo and slide-in frame fit.
@@WraithChornobyl 5.7, 357 Sig and 10mm would render the P226/P229 obsolete. The -cost,- fitting, trigger/guard and slide stop are all superior. Unfortunately CZ has been greedy post flu season. An SP-01 used to be ~$600 (From CZ directly) and ~$550 anywhere else.

IDK why they went that route. One of the main benefits in addition to more energy than a 45, is much greater capacity in a double stack.
I love the 5.7 caliber. In my opinion it's one of the best calibers. Light recoil, accurate, fast, light, fairly quiet and travels far for the size. And the bonus the empty cartridge launches into the sky out the side.
The owner of RIA said the 5.0 would be offered in .22tcm. Also said a spring kit would be available that gives the pistol a 2# trigger. That’s what I want. Sounds great for target shooting or small game hunting.
I can tell just from pictures of it that it's not going to be nearly as comfortable as the 5.7 Rock in the hand. S&W really shouldn't have made that grip so thin.
I can tell you from shooting all of them that this is far superior to the others. It was more comfortable, lower recoil, trigger is probably the best they’ve put out and will be much more reliable than the others that use blowback for a rifle round.
Can't wait to pick one of these up. This guns gonna have me pulling the trigger on a 5.7, and the threaded barrel to put a can on just makes it all the better.
The BEST overall 5.7 video I've seen by far. The field strip and explanation of the Temo was very informative for those who haven't had the option of actually holding one yet. Great job!!!
I wish that Smith & Wesson start to produce the 5906 pistol again, a comeback of these pistols would be amazing, like Colt did with the Python and the Anaconda.
@Teo Phil Hmm. Then why are all the major companies releasing all metal versions of their polymer guns? Why is there a back order for OEM and aftermarket metal grip modules for Sigs? It's not just for the heck of it. Must be something with popularity. Even the glock clones are getting all metal versions.
Any 59 series pistols would be dope. I was just thinking this a few weeks ago when I came across a cleaned up crummy 59 series in 45acp going for $700 at a pawn shop. I'd pay a little more for a new repro new 59 series S&W
Would be interested to know how this compares to the Ruger 5.7, and the PSA Rock 5.7, as well as the FN 5.7. Maybe you could compare all 4 pistols, pros and cons. And as always, thanks for your videos!
The Ruger 57 slide is not very rust resistant mine rusted easily. The FN trigger sucks and the slide rusts easy. The psa trigger is meh. The mp is awesome
@@jackomalley3687 Thanks for the reply! Very helpful! I checked out the FN and I couldn't believe that it is pretty much all polymer, the frame and slide...way overpriced for that gun and wasn't impressed.
@@1AFVeteran I like the FN safety, but the gun needs a long time to become reliable. Even with a threaded barrel, the spring needs softening. The grip also isn't really great.
Really digging this platform, and I am curious to see what else the Tempo system gets put on. My fingers are crossed for something in 7.5 fk, maybe even a pcc could be in the works.
A fan of (yours), Grand Power, Beretta rotating barrel pistols. Just now watching your all inclusive great review of the S&W 5.7x28 from a year ago?! I can’t own all the fire arms you present that I’d like, but being able to view your information and products is wonderful. Wishing you the very best. Rola (Oregon)👍🏻
Been carrying my FiveSeVen for 8 years now, love it and now they support red dots which is even better! I think the barrel length needs to be 5" or so to maintain velocity and cartridge effectiveness. Curious what the velocity would be on a 3" barrel, might neuter it too much.
The best compact design for 5.7mm would be a bullpup action, similar to the Bond Arms Bullpup9. That way you could reduce the overall length, while minimizing loss of barrel length.
@@ostiariusalpha there was one more company that was producing high-quality 5.7 x 28 but I can't remember the name. For some reason I'm thinking they were up in Michigan
Really excited about this pistol but I am going to hold off purchasing one until S&W produce a 5.7 rifle that uses the same magazines. Thanks for the review, Sootch!
I want this piece as a backup for if I ever get hurt so bad, I can't shoot my .45. I think it could rock for people with issues shooting larger calibers.
10/10 would run a can on it, I just got mine yesterday and while I don't have a decibel meter it was comfortable to shoot with a .22 rimfire can on it and ran flawlessly. I was also shooting 5.7 hand loads which are a bit spicy, about 100 fps more than factory FN ammo and had no issues. I feel a lot safer running spicy hand loads on a gas operated system than blowback. The extra delay also helps prevent the shoulders on the cases from getting blown out like they do from my PS-90 and Ruger 57.
This is the review ive been waiting for. I was already leaning towards this, I am definitely purchasing this as soon as I can. Its exactly what i am looking for.
This barrel technology looks so interesting. I'm picturing an S&W Shield EZ style handgun with this barrel system to dampen the felt recoil on 9mm or 380.
I was wondering if you could upsize it to 7.5 Brno. Wondering what the high end is as far as what it could handle. Make the lugs bigger and I don’t see why this wouldn’t work in a rifle round.
The pressures in 5.7 are much higher than 9mm or 380 so I'm thinking it probably wouldn't work as well but maybe. This system was designed more for reliable extraction which is sometimes an issue with 5.7 with the traditional delayed blowback systems and the reduced recoil was just an added benefit. 9mm/380 is already very reliable and compact with the tilting barrel system.
It would be interesting to see that system applied to lots of cartridges. It might really make all S&W pistols stand out from the masses of tilt locks.
Kel-Tec have stated that a 40 grain .22 WMR round should reach a velocity of 1230 fps from the 4.3″ barrel of their PMR-30 pistol. This works out to 134.40 ft/lbs of energy. This is a significantly less than the FN Five-seveN USG (4.75″ barrel), which can push a 40 grain bullet at 2009 fps. This works out to 358.57 ft/lbs! Nearly three times as powerful as the .22 WMR This does not mean that the .22 WMR is not a good cartridge. It simply means that the 5.7mm is optimized to be fired from a pistol, rather than the slower burning .22 WMR loads which are designed to be fired from a rifle.
I want a new 5.7x28 gun and I think I'm going to choose this over the PSA Rock. The PSA is a nice gun, but the M&P series has a reputation for being absolute tanks when it comes to powering through adverse conditions.
It’s pretty rare that I get excited about a pistol, but I was already thinking about a 5.7. It’s really nice to see Smith and Wesson take a chance and try the gas system on a totally new caliber for their pistol line. Can’t wait to shot one and hopefully buy one soon
I got one, ordered it on GB. Showed up and went in. Trigger is FUCKED. Gritty as shit. Almost unusable. I felt many in store and it was amazing. But with my luck I get the shit one from the factory. Having the smith work on it now. So fucking sad man lol
After 1,000+ plus rounds with my Ruger 57, not 1 malfunction, a bit long on the trigger pull, leading to a fairly long reset. I love the 1911 style ambidextrous safety switch on it. I've owned a lot of pistols in my day, and I mean ALOT, somewhere north of 150. This is by far my favorite to take to the range.
I have an M&P9 I know what you mean about the slide finish. It's artwork. Nice video, that 5.7 is a beauty. Handguns are now banned in Canada so I'll never own one. Thanks for the detailed look.
Very slick engineering! I was concerned about the rotating barrel and suppressor use but I see the barrel outter sleeve a suppressor would mount to does not rotate. It is the inner barrel that rotates. Nice!
It comes with two 22 rd mags and the barrel system will need to be maintained more than standard barrels. I shot 500 rds through it and it wasn't much dirtier than when I got it.
I just bought one and I must say I’m very impressed. I never had an interest in buying a 5.7 caliber gun besides the ps90 but I love this thing. Comes optic ready, rail at the bottom and threaded. What more can you ask for.
I bought mine and was able to try it out at the range a week later. I just smiled when shooting it for the first time! While I’m still considering picking up a FN, it isn’t because I don’t like the S&W. I’m considering this as my new conceal carry!
MAN I love your videos!! They're more a production and a joy to watch. Saw Honest Outlaw's review on this and couldn't get enough. Thanks for the video.
Fascinating, we're seeing firearms like the RIA 5.0 with it's nearly fixed barrel to these new designs with a rotating barrel. I need a bigger paycheck.
Very informative video. Sootch00 is the best! I am putting this gun on my list. I would love to see a pistol come out in 17hmr. That is another great round.
The only way I would be interested in 5.7 is if the ammo manufacturers make good rounds like Elite ammunition and bring the price down. Without high-performance penetration this is just a fancy 22 magnum that cost $0.60 a round minimum.
And a can going on that external barrel isn't going to give you all the problems that you get with putting on on a regular tilting barrel. Just awesome.
I have been buying 5.7 X 28 ammo since 2012 and I have NEVER seen it for $18 a box. If the price comes down to $20 to $25 a box I will buy a couple more cases. Thanks for the video.
I am hoping that all these new 5.7 pistols will drive the ammo cost down. If the ammo comes down to like $25/50 I will buy one of these. I want one because I like to shoot handguns at 100-200 yards, but until the ammo becomes a little cheaper its too expensive to plink with
Used to be that price...sales were around $22/50. But I am dating myself about 15+ years when I bought my ORIGINAL FN 5.7. Have the PSA now...did trigger work which made the trigger better. This S&W intrigues me
Until recently, I haven't even seen 9mm that low in the past 2-3 years. Due to the added complexity of manufacturing compared to 9mm, and the fact that it will never be as highly mass produced as 9mm, not to mention inflation, I don't think we'll ever see it below $30 or so for a box of 50. It's certainly not an affordable plinking platform.
@@Bristecom For the past couple months I’ve been seeing 9mm get back down around $15. I just bought some 40 S&W for $16. I can barely handload it for that anymore. If the volume goes up enough the price will come down. Hell you can buy 308 win for less than 5.7x28.
As soon as 5.7 ammo becomes readily available I will buy one. I can’t have a pistol where I can only find a few times a year in stock. I support my local gun shops.
Thanks for this in-depth review and reveal! Shot the ruger, and I love my Ruger firearms, but didn't like the accuracy loss after the barrel heated up. May have just been that particular one, but opted out. After seeing the Smith I'm glad I did. I'll have one soon!
If they keep making these 5.7 guns maybe more ammo companies will make ammo. I went with 22TCM as it was 1/10 the ammo cost and slightly more powerful at 2100fps. Sadly its not SAAMI but its .223 Rem based and easy to reload yourself. Its .33cents a round. 5.7 is down to 60 cents a round so its getting closer. The S&W 5.7 looks like a great pistol. I am glad they are coming out with new designs like RIA did with the 5.0
Yeah, a lot of people tend to say zero recoil for low recoil guns, which emphasizes how they feel compared to others but it's obviously not accurate and may confuse new-comers expecting to feel nothing. I've even heard reviewers say some 9mm handguns have zero recoil which is obviously not true, haha. But the point is, this is probably the lowest recoiling centerfire handgun currently.
I think that once the PSA 5.7 co.pact hits the market others are going to tool up and jump in the 5.7 carry game, but not before then. I think people generally put too much emphasis on barrel length when considering concealability, which IMO is negligible. The overall girth of the firearm and the height from the bottom of the magazine plate to the top of the slide is more cumbersome when trying to keep a firearm from printing. I would IWB carry this pistol without gripes or hesitation as its silhouette is very liken to a full size 1911 at half the weight and 3 times the capacity. Just saying.
Nice. I just picked up the FN Five-Seven MK3. Already got a holster manufacturer making things for it & the mags. Along with a extended barrel, acro p2 optic & flash light/laser coming in the mail
@@PatriotPaulUSA the 22tcm is an intriguing round for sure; however the lack of ammunition availability through local shops prevents my investing in one. I think that the idea of smaller calibers that are easier recoiling is brilliant. With more and more citizens seeking to exercise their 2A rights,I think that the market needs more effective defensive options that aren't as intense to manage for those suffering with grip strength and such. The other thing is capacity in more compact packages for concealment is something that seems to be a focus and while the 30SC has bridged the gap between capacity to ballistic capacity ility in micro-compact format, it still recoils like 9mm which makes it snappier in small frames doing nothing for management by those who are recoil sensitive. 5.7 and smaller calibers like that with proper defensive bullet designs could be the answer to that problem.
@@killacoiler1707 I agree, My 78 yr old dad has a joint disability and has had both wrists fused, He is just one of many types of people that are not able to shoot most handguns today unfortunately. Small framed people , small women, kids, etc can all shoot a 22TCm with guidance and it can be a good defensive round.
@@PatriotPaulUSA the problem we have in the US is everything has to be the biggest and baddest it can possibly be. For example look at our vehicles they are land yachts compared to foreign vehicles. Is it a necessity; not really. It is more about presentation, representation of status, and appeasing the ego. I wish we could have Japanese mini-trucks for street use. It is the same with caliber of firearms too we apply the same philosophy of there is no replacement for displacement like we do our vehicles and their engines. The funny thing is what good is all that power if you cannot effectively use it on a daily basis. The 22 caliber holds the top slot for most commonly used in civilian human fatalities, yet, ironically it is the round almost every American says is not adequately suited to self defense purposes. So are the statistics wrong, or are we all just too macho to give credit where it is due? IMO a 22 is still better than a cell phone and a stick. Just saying.
Fiocchi has the license for all 5.7 production in the US. Regardless of the brand name…it is loaded by Fiocchi. Unfortunately until FN gets out of the way production will always be bottlenecked…
+1. The Fiocchi branded ammo comes in at HIGHER costs than the AE TMJ and SS197SR labeled ammo. and it's no faster, and no improvements were made to the loadings for better reliability.
@@7N6ballistics Where did that information come from? When I spoke to the PM of the 5.7 GD They seemed to indicate the velocity they ended up with was "safe". I think personally political pressure and FN control is holding these back. This is why we need AAC.
The round has been around for 30+ years now. What patent would still apply to license? Only thing I'd ever heard mentioned as a hindrance to production was some sort of seal on the cartridge. Not sure why any other company at this point couldn't come up with their own seal.
@@aaronfarnsworth7653 because FN licensed it to Fiocchi. For now…Federal, Speer, FN, Fiocchi…all are loaded by Fiocchi. Its also why the cartridge is watered down. Gold Dot was designed with 1850fps in mind…good luck getting that kind of velocity out of any of the commercial loadings with Fiocchi at the wheel…
I think you're right about suspecting barrel length as the limiting factor on a smaller sized 5.7mm handgun. I believe the barrel length is around 16" for a P90. Makes sense you need the barrel length to achieve the cartridge velocity. Essayons 🙏 ⚜️🇺🇲
I wanna see how much adding a can and a TLR1 would reduce the recoil. 5.7 is just an awesome caliber, and glad to see S&W enter the game with an innovative design. I just hate the trigger guard design. As someone who has a bad hand, having that extra hook point on the guard helps me maintain the control over the gun. Good review!
Try loading multiple rounds into the mag loader. It looks to be somewhat similar in design to the ETS magazine speed loader. Let me know if that works. If so, you might be able to load the entire magazine with one push. Load multiple rounds into loader (looks like about 10 rounds might fit) Insert magazine into the loader Press the two together (maybe set the bottom of the magazine onto a flat surface, then press down on the loader).

I recall the only main issue people said with the Alien was the frame would heat up quickly like a rifle, so CCW'ing would become a slight issue. I would think for an underbarrel design would require any top slide to have porting to help with cool-off.
Too bad the RIA isn’t available in 22TCM.
It's good to see more companies getting involved with 5.7. I would love to see a steel framed model with CZ SP-01-inspired ergo and slide-in frame fit.
Im still waiting on a 10mm Factory CZ S/P01 offering. We will be waiting awhile.
@@WraithChornobyl
5.7, 357 Sig and 10mm would render the P226/P229 obsolete. The -cost,- fitting, trigger/guard and slide stop are all superior. Unfortunately CZ has been greedy post flu season. An SP-01 used to be ~$600 (From CZ directly) and ~$550 anywhere else.
@@joebenson528 Check Dahlonega Armory. I got a new CZ PCR from them a few months ago for $500, when you add to cart they apply the discounts
The last 10mm SIG I saw that was hammer fired, used a single stack magazine for some reason. IDK why they went that route. One of the main benefits in addition to more energy than a 45, is much greater capacity in a double stack.
Everyone seems impressed with it! Thanks Don
It's pretty impressive : ) Thanks Chase!
I love the 5.7 caliber. In my opinion it's one of the best calibers. Light recoil, accurate, fast, light, fairly quiet and travels far for the size. And the bonus the empty cartridge launches into the sky out the side.
I really hope we get more 5.7 guns. Honestly might be the best self defense handgun cartridge.
I don't know about quiet but I agree with everything else.
The owner of RIA said the 5.0 would be offered in .22tcm. Also said a spring kit would be available that gives the pistol a 2# trigger. That’s what I want. Sounds great for target shooting or small game hunting.
Who is ria as im also interested in 22 calibers.

thank you for detailing the rotating barrel, I've heard the phrase but had a hard time picturing it, really appreciate your attention to detail!
I just bought the PSA 5.7, really liking it. Trigger is excellent, grip and ergo are to.
It looks amazing too...
I've been eying the PSA 5.7 myself. It appears to be just as well built and even has a thicker barrel.
Just bought the psa.
This pistol looks better than all the other 5.7 pistols in terms of ergonomics. I just bought the FN510 and that thing is a beast
Make a review
I can tell just from pictures of it that it's not going to be nearly as comfortable as the 5.7 Rock in the hand. S&W really shouldn't have made that grip so thin.
I can tell you from shooting all of them that this is far superior to the others. It was more comfortable, lower recoil, trigger is probably the best they’ve put out and will be much more reliable than the others that use blowback for a rifle round.
Can't wait to pick one of these up. This guns gonna have me pulling the trigger on a 5.7, and the threaded barrel to put a can on just makes it all the better.
Sootch... you must seek to live forever so I am not forced to stop watching your amazing reviews.
You are one of my favs... God bless you my friend.
6906 too
True. Now that "all metal" guns are becoming popular again.
@@baconatordoom they are not. Unless you are in a restricted state or something. The market is flooded with striker fired polymer glock copies.
@@jackomalley3687 The FN safety is also terrible.
Great review as usual Don! PSA actually has a bundle deal with their 5.7 and their entry level AR together for around $875.
Thanks Brother! PSA is putting out great products for reasonable prices.
Yea I had to buy it the second I saw this comment lmao. Too insane of a deal to pass up man, thanks for that heads up fam.
@@vielumiereg9794 I'm about to snatch that deal myself after all the other bills are paid and that $$$ is *mine*

Sweet deal. The Ruger lc carbine alone is 850 to 900 by itself
@@BruceLortzHI They might just yet if 5.7mm gets anymore popular.
The best compact design for 5.7mm would be a bullpup action, similar to the Bond Arms Bullpup9. That way you could reduce the overall length, while minimizing loss of barrel length.
The rounds are already neutered down so anymore neutering will make the round obsolete.
Even the FN rounds have been neutered for the civilian Market.
@@steveh7108 Elite Ammo is currently the only real source of full power 5.7mm available to the civilian market.
I'm a 1911 man myself but really considering getting a 5.7 for my wife, I think it would boost her confidence shooting it with low recoil.
Good to see full reviews still on YT, hope you may consider posting on rumble as well just to be safe
Thank you Don! Now I need to find a way to get one.
PSA's looks the best...but the M&P has me the most interested.
Nearly three times as powerful as the .22 WMR
This does not mean that the .22 WMR is not a good cartridge.
Have you seen the Garand Thumb channel mud/frozen pistol tests? The M&P 2.0 did very well in both.
Thanks for this honest assessment/review. I went this weekend and purchased one. I am having a ball with it.
Mp is a toy compared to the fn.i have both and will be returning the sw.
Right off the bat I’m seeing low recoil as you shoot that. Impressive.
5.7 is already a low recoil caliber but the rotating barrel makes a big difference. Thanks Tim
Very slick engineering! I was concerned about the rotating barrel and suppressor use but I see the barrel outter sleeve a suppressor would mount to does not rotate. It is the inner barrel that rotates. Nice!
2 questions
1. May have missed it but how magazines does it come with?
2. Since the barrel is in a shroud with ports, how fast & dirty does it get?
It comes with two 22 rd mags and the barrel system will need to be maintained more than standard barrels. I shot 500 rds through it and it wasn't much dirtier than when I got it.
@@sootch00 thats great
Thank you
Wow... I was about to buy a Ruger 57, but I didn't know about this beauty. Buy now save a few extra Benjamins, and definitely I will buy this S&W 57.
Curious if there is significant weight difference between smith and the other ones that also attribute to lesser recoil? Awesome review
Well done. Thank you for showing multiple views and the repeat firing.
This was a good display of its operation.
It is an impressive automatic pistol.

Congrats for being first Mike! 😂
Sooch has always been my favorite gear reviewer. He’s humble and just a down to earth guy despite his legendary status lol. I’m serious though.
Very informative video. Sootch00 is the best! I am putting this gun on my list. I would love to see a pistol come out in 17hmr. That is another great round.
Thanks Brother! I appreciate it~
I would definitely like to see this as well. I believe taurus makes a revolver in hmr I'm surprised no one has done a auto pistol yet though.
I'm glad you focused on the barrel. Some others barely mentioned it if at all in previews
The only way I would be interested in 5.7 is if the ammo manufacturers make good rounds like Elite ammunition and bring the price down. Without high-performance penetration this is just a fancy 22 magnum that cost $0.60 a round minimum.
This guy gets it
And a can going on that external barrel isn't going to give you all the problems that you get with putting on on a regular tilting barrel. Just awesome.
Wish we could buy the good loads that only military and LE are allowed to own
Just called my local gun store and had them place one on order for me. I should have it in a couple of days. Great review Sootch!!!
This is genius. Lowers the recoil, no nielson device needed for suppressors with all the benefits of 5.7
I held one at my local shop, now I have to have it.
It’s very slim, I like the feel of it.
Man, snw has been piling on the innovation recently. Good stuff
Bought this today. It's just as beautiful in person as it is in the video. Can't wait to go shoot it.

With a pistol (RUGER 57) and a carbine (FN PS90) I'm happy to see more and more firearms chambered for this potent little round.
PSA is more attractive $ wise, but this looks awesome.
This is only $100 more
That gap between the frame and the slide close to the barrel is gnarly lol. I like how you guys tried to cover the gap with angles and backgrounds.
Who cares about a little gap? If you wallow around in the dirt I guess it could be an issue.... or for people who don't clean their firearms

Would love to find one
If they keep making these 5.7 guns maybe more ammo companies will make ammo. I went with 22TCM as it was 1/10 the ammo cost and slightly more powerful at 2100fps. Sadly its not SAAMI but its .223 Rem based and easy to reload yourself. Its .33cents a round. 5.7 is down to 60 cents a round so its getting closer. The S&W 5.7 looks like a great pistol. I am glad they are coming out with new designs like RIA did with the 5.0
There is no recoil. Except at 10:46, where there is. Zero is a number, and means something. The word you are looking for is "less."
Finally found one of these! Can't wait to get to the range tomorrow.
Hopefully they will my RIA 22tcm doublestack 1911 is a 4.25" barrel and 2100fps so it can be done. It may have a fireball like mine tho when shot :)
Just ordered the M&P 5.7 can't wait to pickup it up.
Dude it looks like that thing has the recoil of a 32acp
Dude, love your reviews. I have to get an M&P 5.7, keep up the good work. Thanks.
@@BuffRANGE its unfortunate, because it’s holding the cartridge back. Fiocchi would not even load Gold Dot to the spec’d design parameters .
I will stick with my FN but am thrilled by the new addition and it’s effect on the price of ammunition
With the right ammo, as this was designed, it will far outpace 9mm ballistically
The rotating barrel is questionable for me. I'm not impressed!
Once the barrel and the sleeve start to wear your accuracy just when all to hell.
For the algorithm!
I have ruger 57 and no need for this at all but I'm buying one immeadialty.
Unfortunately you keep shortening the 5.7 you keep taking away it's advantage.
Try loading multiple rounds into the mag loader. It looks to be somewhat similar in design to the ETS magazine speed loader.
Let me know if that works. If so, you might be able to load the entire magazine with one push.
Load multiple rounds into loader (looks like about 10 rounds might fit)
Insert magazine into the loader
Press the two together (maybe set the bottom of the magazine onto a flat surface, then press down on the loader).
Had the ruger an didn't like an sure not feeling this one either the grip is horrible local shop has one in stock
They already have the M&P 5.7!? I didn't think they were in shops yet. I haven't seen any online or in store yet.
I think I’ll grab this over the psa.
