Got to bring them out of storage, add new hooks and get back to the 70's way of catching them. So easy to get caught up in the latest/greatest syndrome. Thank you Matt.
The Rapala original floaters, shad raps, and fat raps in silver/black back and gold/black back are really all you need. I have also found times when the blue/black back and/or the original perch color work very well.
I'm a huge fan of the "ol school" colors! Silver/Blue back is another great one and in the lakes where trout are a bass forage species the Rapala Rainbow Trout is a KILLER pattern!
The gold with the black back combo works great! We were on Rice Lake, Ontario (close to Peterborough) and a friend's uncle that we were with pulled out a pre Rapala gold/black back wiggle wart and in just a few casts managed to catch 2 walleye and a nice largemouth bass. At that time I was not familiar with this color combo and my buddy and I went through our tackle boxes looking for this color pattern and neither one of had it. After that we both now have these wiggle warts and quite a few other color patterns. Thanks for the info Matt and I hope that you and your family have a Happy Thanksgiving!!
Matt, I fish a pond and just received a Vision 110 Jr GLX Gold and in cannot wait ti fish it. My pond is about4~6 ft so trying to slow down keep it in the upper column to keep from loosing it. Blessings to you and your Family.
I love the silver/black and solid white XRaps. There's one white XRap that has caught me I can't even tell you how many fish of several species but I retired it for fear of losing it.
Well since I'm old I have all the colors you showed. Plus the new ones. Pro blue is a color that is considered a new one but I have used a Bomber long A for years that is clear with a blue back. Like a chrome insert. It also comes with a black back. My favorite color is the one the fishies are biting. 😁
Spot on, most of the baits hanging on the rack at BPS catch fisherman not bass… hence why Johnny Morris is a billionaire and none of us are BASS Master classic winners! Your old school color choices are juice, no need to get overly fancy!
I was sitting here listening before you started your reveal wondering to myself in The Clown made the list and you didn't disappoint. I have noticed that you can't find them very many places either, good thing I paint my own.
A clear Zara spook jr. They were a must have on our clear lakes in Az but now with so many different kinds of top water baits available hardly anyone uses them any more. I catch fish with them all the time!
My favorite color still to this day is Table Rock Shad, love that color and one of my new favs is Northern Lights!!! Dont forget the chrome and blue back, thats another good one!!!
So glad for this video. I had forgotten about the old school colors in my other tackle box. I've been too busy buying the latest and supposedly greatest. Throwing old school this weekend.
I have all the colors you showed and they have taken a backseat in my Jerkbait selections. Always going with the newer colors for some reason. They are all good colors and fish catchers and I need to start throwing them again. I had Tim Hughes custom paint Table Rock Shad Rogues. Tim pretty much invented the Table Rock Shad color. Thanks and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
I've got a silver/black shad rap on my cranking rod for few days ago. Also gold /black orange belly. Thier colors my grandpa always used & I still use them because they catch me fish!
Firetiger caught ton of fish with that color. muskys small and large mouth bass even walleye firetiger silver and black gold and black as you mentioned I have other colors these are my number one go to when nothing else works
Great video as usual! I almost always throw the gold husky if I'm throwing a jerkbait. Here in Maine, we have tons of gold shiners in almost every lake. If I'm fishing an ultra clear lake with a big smelt population, I'll switch up to the silver, or silver w/some iridescence. I like to keep it pretty simple with jerkbaits, I think the funky colors are off-putting since the bass have time to look things over, especially when the water is cold and you have to slow things down. Thanks again for another informative fishing video.
Great video! Had a banner day for big bass and walleye last week on size 12 husky jerk firetiger and clown. Hadn't used those colors in a while but wow they worked great
Great video. I use the black back, gold sides, orange belly color combination fairly often. Didn’t know table rock shad was so good. Curious about your view of the gill colored/imitating jerkbaits. Appreciate all your work in making these.
Great topic. I'll suggest not only has the marketing moved anglers from proven colors, I'd suggest proven baits too. Gold black back solid river choice.
I've always used the strike king chrome/black and gold chrome/black,ALSO....a color called "pro black"...looks exactly like a baitfish or some type or minnow. In clear man made lakes or ponds I love using the clear AYU and clear water minnow color!
Great video Matt! I have all those colours and sure enough in the old Rapala Husky Jerks and found some in the Strike King KVD jerkbaits just last year. One colour that was my favourite as a kid was the old Rapala floating bait in Blue back silver. I had a 2 inch floater that I would tie to a bell sinker to get it down to bottom and drag like a Carolina rig. Caught my biggest largemouth when I was 13 which was over 35 yrs ago! Haha. I do not see this colour at all in any of the newer companies and it was my go to when it was tough. I still have that 2 inch little bait to this day.
Gotem all except the table rock shad. Definitely been in my shopping cart tho. That being said I just landed a 5lber on the strikeking pro blue . Pro Blu has been a favorite of mine lately that and the elgen bone almost see-through with the blueish purple back with the bright green belly . Great video, always a pleasure to watch.
I agree with you on the old simple colors I usually stick with them but what you really said about is not what the what you like or choose I'm not chasing the bait it's the fish and that's the reason why I've never tried a clown but you can bet I'll give it a try now
Over the years the Rapala floating minnow, silver, black back, I've landed some really nice bass. This year I tried suspending jerkbaits for the first time. I used YO-ZURI's 3DS minnows, bone/ghost & luminescent/chartreuse. A couple of times bass were nailing them, I'm glad I tried jerkbaits even though I wasn't very successful it's a good time fishing. Matt, thanks for all of your tips they definitely help. Happy Thanksgiving.

Matt how could you have forgotten to mention Fire Tiger, but you did mention my favorite; black back red belly gold side. I myself still throw the Long A in black back red belly gold insert in two sizes, once again thanks for the trip down memory lane 👍
Blue & Orange? ,, Silver & Blue ,, Red Head White Body for me and I'm partial to Yozuri (silver & black yep) although all the brands look good today. Yozuri Pin Minnow started it all for me, I have caught big fish, small fish, and most fish with that tiny bait, it turns on it's side perfectly when jerked.
Oh Matt you’re giving away some of us oldies secrets! Still throw my clown rogues on the rock and always keep fat raps silver black in the boat and blue chrome spoonbill rebels 😎
Hi Matt, as the saying goes “ lures are meant to catch fishermen not fish😄” So true nowadays we are buying the most flashiest/holographic/ rainbow colours out there🐟
I'm new at bass fishing not knowing what colors to get I got my self some of the colors he showed I choose em because I believed that they will help me catch bass
Many if not most companies charge a premium for special color schemes and strangely to me at least that upcharge catches even more anglers at the store shelf. I refuse to pay even a penny more for a color scheme I've never seen before when the basics have worked for me just fine for decades.
I've honestly caught more fish on sexy shad pattern than anything else. white belly, blue back a dot and a yellow stripe. It can't that new can it? Works well in IL in rivers and ponds, and I got smallies and largemouth, and pike on it. Clear and dirty water.
Caught my biggest jerkbait fish 7lb 9oz on a clown color rapala ripstop, can't explain why I have never thrown it since, guess looking for the perfect condition to throw it again , I am throwing tablerock shad jerkbaits, so far this late fall my biggest bass have came on the tablerock shad in super clear water, against all odds lol
Shhh, don't show that gold black, again, not only is it good in Florida but my favorite in NC. I've acquired many many different colors of crankbaits, jerkbaits, etc, but usually go to the old school colors first. And believe me, I'm as old school as it gets! Love your channel and content.
ya that 's funny...if they sold so good they wouldn't need peeps like this trying to sell off stock....fact of the matter is there action is terrible and newer baits have better action....fish aren't dumb they see the same old acting bait and know they shouldn't eat it.
Why nobady talks about firetiger? It's one of the ALL time best lure color ever. Jerkbaits, crankbaits, spooks, poppers, the old "devils horse" firetiger etc. If you could talk about that color I would thank you Very much
My suggestion is try to find a jerkbait that works for you. Find the brand that catches fish for you. I can make great by specifying but that's no challenge. Try different jerks.
It depends where you fish, I usually fish in highland reservoirs with clear water, so the most productive jerkbait colors are (depending on water clarity, sky and wind conditions) MB twilight chart back, table rock, GP pro blue, silver chrome black back, Cotton wakasagi and all the other see through with moderate chrome in it.. and white/bone. I have some old smithwicks in those colors, I tell the wife all the time, they get hung up, I’m going to blow up the dam to get them back. I buy the new colored ones as well, cause I think they look good, the fish disagree with me lol
I buy some per-owned baits online rejected by others 90’s Rapala, save me some bucks and leave room to afford some crazy modern SHIMANO FlashBoost baits 😂
There is a problem small baits look like adult fish, as far as I know the only fish looks the same young an old is yellow perch . How about fire tiger. Thanks Matt
There is something to be said about. MagaBass color schemes When in Minnesota on the Mississippi River. Fish won’t touch a standard colors. Than guys show up with their MagaBass. And automatically start sticking them. I pulled out mine I started sticking them too. Just saying. There colors.
When I buy any hard bait I always get a white w black back and a gold with black back first. If I can’t catch them on either of those then the lure isn’t worth it to me. I think the action is what’s way more important than color. Another color I have in a husky jerk that works awesome is the chrome with blue back and orange belly. Works amazing for me on windy days up here in upstate NY.
ACTION is def more important!!! you hit the nail on the head!! winner winner...and the fact of the matter is that better action baits have evolved and hence the falling away of old school even though they may be the best colors of the 80's...lol
The nephew asked me why do I keep buying new lures when I have too many great lures. I never answered him. I did spoke about this on FB. I said for me, it is no longer about the fish or fishing anymore. This is the highest level where I am at. It is about the art of the lures. I seek that which men cannot see.
My first 3 bass of the season April 2nd & 3rd were 6.4 , 5.1 ,& 5.22 all caught on a 3" gold/ black rapala here in NH !

i like firetiger!
Don't forget tiger stripe jerkbaits
you bet!
There is something to be said about. MagaBass color schemes When in Minnesota on the Mississippi River. Fish won’t touch a standard colors. Than guys show up with their MagaBass. And automatically start sticking them. I pulled out mine I started sticking them too. Just saying. There colors.
Awesome
You forgot the tried and true floating Rappi
thats a good one too
I throw a ton of gold jerkbaits up here in michigan. They are killers on any lake with a good carp population
gold very underated!
The problem with Gold is the Pike like it more than the bass from my experience.
When I buy any hard bait I always get a white w black back and a gold with black back first. If I can’t catch them on either of those then the lure isn’t worth it to me. I think the action is what’s way more important than color. Another color I have in a husky jerk that works awesome is the chrome with blue back and orange belly. Works amazing for me on windy days up here in upstate NY.
all great colors!
ACTION is def more important!!! you hit the nail on the head!! winner winner...and the fact of the matter is that better action baits have evolved and hence the falling away of old school even though they may be the best colors of the 80's...lol
👍👍👍👍👍
thanks!
Yeah but you buddy and others say you have to thro somethin they haven't seen ;)
thanks for sharing!
How about red head white body!
not one of my favorites but its a classic color!
forgotten for a reason...
i disagree
Bone is one of the best colors, but man is it boring to look at!
haha sure is!
The nephew asked me why do I keep buying new lures when I have too many great lures. I never answered him. I did spoke about this on FB. I said for me, it is no longer about the fish or fishing anymore. This is the highest level where I am at. It is about the art of the lures. I seek that which men cannot see.
