    At 2:34 in the video I said "Obviously this region was Yugoslavia, until the breakup of the Soviet Union". I didn't mean to suggest that Yugoslavia was part of the USSR, as it wasn't. I was simply pointing to the fact that they both were communist countries which broke apart at almost the exact same time, and according to some, Yugoslavia was considered to be behind the "Iron Curtain" of countries allied with the USSR. But that point is debatable. The politics in the region are very complicated and I'm no expert on them by any means. Here's an interesting article exploring the subject of why western countries in general tend to associate the former Yugoslavia with the USSR, even including prominent politicians and media organizations in the US: globalvoices.org/2019/10/26/yugoslavia-wasnt-a-soviet-ally-so-why-does-that-misconception-persist-on-western-media/
    But the main point I want to make here is that Yugoslavia was not part of the USSR and despite being communist was not a steadfast ally of the Soviet Union.

    At the 14:00 min mark, that big building straight ahead is the Palace Albanija, the first skyscraper in Southeast Europe. Though a little drab by today's standards, it does have a cool history. It was built in 1939 on the spot were a dingy albeit popular kafana used to be. It was used by the Nazis in WWII as a headquarters and was bombed by the allies, though its construction was robust enough to withstand the assault fairly well. And you were lucky. When I was there a year ago, that whole Republic Square was torn up under construction with barricades all around.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  4 года назад +1

      Yes, I didn't mean to suggest that Yugoslavia was part of the Soviet Union. But Yugoslavia was communist and aligned with the USSR to some extent, and the collapse of the USSR clearly had an affect on Yugoslavia breaking apart at the same time.

    • @Takealook99
      @Takealook99 4 года назад +3

      @@GabrielTravelerVideos Not quite. Stalin wanted Yugoslavia to be under the Soviet Union, however then Yugoslav president Broz Tito clearly refused it, therefore has became an enemy of Soviet Union. Only during the division of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, not the Soviet Union but already non-communist Russia was the only significant country that supported Yugoslavia/Serbia, which tried to prevent the division. For that the US and its puppet allies have heavily bombed Belgrade. Again: Let's be clear: Yugoslavia was never influenced by the Soviet Union. Although they were a communist country, their communism was different from that of the Soviet Union. Yugoslav people were free and always proud. It was the US that divided them. Serbia has been on my "want to visit" list for a while, but not very high on it. With the virus, and them being one of the very few countries to welcome Americans, they're creeping higher on the list. Your "guy on the street" perspective has made me really want to visit. But for at least a few months, I'm going to monitor their virus situation, and hope that ours gets better, although it would be hard to get much worse.

    Hey Gabriel I have followed you for years just watched your video you did today about you turning off comments. its a shame that in hard times people don't give you the respect and appreciate what your have taught travellers during the years. don't lose heart . You are fantastic and I have learnt a lot from your years of youtube.. Just shrug negative comments off and keep doing what you do best. stay safe and well ok.

    Croatia on July 10 is allowing American to travel there if they have a negative Covid-19 test result (within 48 hours of arrival ) or must be quarantined for 14 days. One exception to quarantine, take a virus test there & get negative result in first week. Test costs $280.

    Love Belgrade. Kindest people, amazing food, lots of sights, super cheap. I would go back just for the food, especially cevapi from anywhere and pizza from a local chain called Big Pizza. Obviously check out if any of the Skadarlija restaurants are open. There is also a cool area on the Sava west of the fortress where there's a long row of high end restaurants and floating nightclubs. Donesi is the local delivery site if you run out of options on Volt.

    Hi, Gabriel looks like you are walking around my neighborhood :) What are your plans in Belgrade and how long you are going to stay in Belgrade? Are you planning some hiking? I am a fun of your channel and I'm a hiker also. I have a regular job but I could arrange some local hiking during the weekend if you are interested. Djerdap (Đerdap) gorge or mountain Rtanj are easy 1 day hikes. Also for the whole weekend mountain Tara or mountain Stara planina are excellent choices. I just came from Stara planina last weekend, slept in tent at 5500fts. There were some plans to go to Bosnia this weekend but that was cancelled so I'm free for "local" trails. If you don't want to go outside of Belgrade, Košutnjak forest and lake Ada are a nice 15miles walk combined or 4-5h + resting time.

    • @branislavpetkovic

      Regarding "State of emergency in Belgrade", situation is normal but potentialy could become more complicated. In that case I recommend you to go to Sofia, Bulgaria. Their borders are open and there are no restriction as far as I know. But most important they have beautiful mountains there. Above Sofia iz Vitosha mountain, around 7000feets and I also recommend mountain Rila around 8800feets nearby town is Borovets, and mountain Todorka around 8300feets nearby town is Bansko. Otherwise if you want to go to the sea, Croatia also has open borders but be careful, unlike Bulgaria it could be expensive during summer.

There are plenty of awesome museums, the fortress, river banks etc. I encourage everyone to visit this magnificent city. On a side note, while Serbia might not be well known, Serbia made plenty of contributions to the world including Nikola Tesla who invented AC electricity amongst other amazing things. The Nikola Tesla museum is awesome and they have English tours.

    You are a bit unfortunate to have arrived in Belgrade at this time. These protests were ignited supposedly because of plans of re-introducing the curfew. However, it was just a reason for the opposition to do unrest. They had a huge loss in the elections held a few days ago and they're using this as a way to show their frustration.

    • @eri6984
      @eri6984 4 года назад

      Actually no. President cut all security measures and lied about COVID19 cases so he could hold the elections. Elections were rigged and just a way for him to secure his dictatorship. After he "won" the elections he installed new curfew. And that is one of examples why people, especially the young ones are angry. Serbians have nothing against curfew but they have everything against corruption. 5G, him not revealing plans for Kosovo, him not standing up for Serbians, all politicians who only know how to yell at people whenever people want something different, them having mafia people as their advisors and working tightly with mafia, them spending PEOPLE money on dumb things, them trying to destroy culture, them for letting migrants to do whatever they want to do including migrants destroying cities, them for putting starlets on important positions and ect also played a huge role in these protests. It is not just "Serbians being brats because someone who thy dislike won elections."
