Hey Chris, great video! Curious, would WLED work with the ESP32 and the new Govee LED Curtains?
@@ikontact that's a good question! I do want to play around and see if I can get it to work. My gut says no just because it's a very custom type product but I could be wrong. If I do try and get it to work I'll for sure make a video!
@@ChrisMaherDIY That would be amazing! Will follow your channel for updates! Was working with using Resolume Arena 7, ESP-32S, and LED Matrixes to make cool visuals on the matrixes, and would love to do it with curtains as well so was curious. Although not sure what LED type they are lol. For example mine are WS2812's I believe. But thought it'd be cool if it was possible, or if there's somewhere else to get curtains for my purpose you could recommend? Haha
@ChrisMaherDIY id be interested if this works with the govee pro. I do have a single set that was bad (couple bulbs werent workin) that could be tested.
@@ChrisMaherDIYis there a way to do this to where the esp won’t needed to be powered separately and can all just be powered through one brick for the simplest cleanest setup?
Great content as always Chris. Love the style of your videos. Crystal clear explanations with no unnecessary filler. Your editing/production is on point!
I appreciate that you threw in how easy it could be to reconnect the original box, and that you used wago connectors. I feel that's more reassuring and encouraging to those uneasy about experimenting knowing they have the means to abort / reset!
Great video and thank you for showing those Wago Connectors as they will always be handy to have around and will order some :)
This is incredible! I'm definitely going to try it here in Australia for Christmas !!!
Great content! Exactly what I was searching for. Thank you!
The thought of cutting a set of brand new and expensive govee lights makes me 🫣. But watching you put it all back together is awesome, great project for the advanced (and fearless) users!
I was just wondering if this was possible last night 🤯
I was curious if I can convert my non-smart Govee light bars. Looks like it’s worth digging into! Thanks for the video 🙌🏻
love your videos! they are amazing! just realised you have more than 100k subscribers. i have been subscribed since you had like 40K to 50K subscribers. keep up the good work
Thanks for sharing. My Govee strips have been acting up lately and I was just researching how to switch them to WLED then I saw you posted this video a few hours ago. I'll give it a shot. My main concern was they run on 12V and I've never done LED strip with WLED that run on over 5V.
This is awesome. I had this idea for a while now. But wasn't able to get around to trying. Boy, am I excited that it works.
That's a pretty cool find. Good to know you have options
Just came from your updated house light video and searched wled Govee and this video came up! Perfect 👍
Very cool, thanks for sharing!
Great vid Chris!! 😉
Thanks for sharing,
As the Govee lights are also ws281x the same govee controller can be used with othe ws281x stripe lights from 30 Leds per meter to 144 Leds per meter thru Their App.
Great video!!! I thoroughly enjoyed the prior govee splicing video. I feel confident now making any cuts needed when I get a set for our house.
Question, I've heard the ESP32 works with home assistant. So this application makes sense. Does govee itself work with home assistant? 🤔
For those using an ESP8266, GPIO 2 is pin D4. For the ESP32, it’s D2 as shown in Chris’ video. Hopefully this saves someone the hour of frustration I just went through. 😂
Some really great info on your channel... Just starting to tinker around with some LED's for the home studio and man, this is a lot more "complex" than I thought it would be. Thanks!!
Great video, this was something that I was exploring recently. Just wondering if you managed to get this working with the M1 LED strips ?
That is the 1st thing I tried when I got my set. I was a bit nervous, but was so happy to see the result 😊. This way I can have full control in Home Assistant. The Govee HA integration is too basic.
Have you tried this with the Govee curtain and used the WLED matrix?
I would definitely like to see this next
Thank you Chris.
With the new pro version permanent lights you have not only the RGB main but 3 warm and 2 cool leds for white lights. Are those also controlled with wLED? I assume it would need to be programmed as a new string light model in the wLED software.
Awesome video! Gave me ideas and a new option to try. I just purchased the GOVEE Curtain... should be here in hours.
I work at WAGO and appreciate your positivity towards are amazing connectors. WAGO (WA part pronounced like "Water" - just an FYI). 🙂
Did you got govee curtain to work with wled?
Nice! I will probably have to cut mine for the roofline.
I've always wondered if Govee could be used with WLED and now I know! That's awesome.. Now i just need to know which controllers to buy, how many I want to buy and all the other tools and such needed for projects :)
Question for you Chris! If you were to wire up a small room (actually interior of truck camper) which 12V compatible LED strips and controller would you recommend? Power efficiency and colour changing wanted.
Love the video. try a Wagobox IP68 Junction Box with your Wago 221 connectors for outdoors if they are available in the USA. you'll never look back
What is a good "effect mode" to test out my setup? Right now I seem to have a lot of flickering, but I can't tell if it is part of the effect or not. The solid and chasing modes work with no issues, but I wanted to test on a more advanced setting to ensure I have enough power for the LED's.
Setup:
Power supply is a 36v 4A supply
Using a ESP32 board
LED Outputs
- Selected "WS281x"
Length "12" - for 12 LED's
Disabled automatic Brightness limiter
One 12 LED Govee Outdoor Permanent Lights
I just got interested in RGB lights and have a many projects to tackle. Your vids are very educational . Is the a book or other source that a novice like me could get to at least get a little educated before eating money on mistakes?
Your House looks awesome Chris ! I was looking at Your stairs runway Video last night to do a similar project hope to get everything ordered today i Love RGB incase no one noticed lol
Thank you! Was wanting Govee but also WLED. Just wondering how the whites look on these?
Love your videos!
450 linear feet around my house eaves
Obviously, I need at least Qty 3 - 100 ft kits with spliced runs in some places, so each segment doesn't exceed 150 ft. My question is power. Do I just use the included power supplies, one for each segment, then use a WLED controller for the 3 data lines (1 per segment)?
OR
Could I use a Madewell 24V power supply and inject power at each segment?
I think that every single product that use WS281x led is ready to use with WLED, like i use the LS100 from Corsair with Razer Chroma Software, with the controller from Razer and some ARGB 4 pin connectors.
If the WLED come with some GUI Interface i think i will move to WLED, but for now i remain with my Razer software 😅
Hi from Italy 🙋🏻♂️
Wled has an app and a gui in your browser.
@@DaMook82 I know, but i want an app on PC/Laptop or on the phone app to control individual led with one tap, or like Twinkly, Lifx, Govee, Philips hue to drag and drop or paint with finger, if you know what i talking about it 🤩, that will be awesome 🔝
Something simple, not to go on settings for adding a lot of LED or individual leds ✌🏻
What about reverse / opposite? Control cheaper leds using Govee.
Great video. Do you think this can work with Govee’s floodlight?
Fantastic tutorials! I wish I could use these but between the cable being white on my dark colored house and my house having no soffit to attach to, they are sadly not an option. So, I'm looking to get lights (C7-C9) I can put up for Halloween and leave up through Christmas changing the color themes along the way. This looks like it could be a good option to replace the horrid controller / apps that come with most smart light sets (3 wire like these). Do you by chance know if that's true? It's amazing how hard it is to find solutions for lights. It seems the choices are painfully boring and buggy or super complex for a light show that requires a PC to control lol.
Hey Chris, your videos and editing are spot on. I've been messing with WLED for a while on 3D printer projects and wanted to use it with my Govee H705C Permenant Outdoor LED's (non-pro). I don't like their app and wanted a little more control ;o)
Rather than cutting off the end of a light string I cut off the end of an extension to wire in my setup
36v 10a PSU powers Govee lights and 40v Buck convertor
Buck convertor powers ESP32, running WLED v0.12.1, at 5v
ESP32 data line connected to Govee LED
I have an issue when the ESP32 is powered by the PSU, unless LED’s are set to solid, static, 100% power and white they change colour and cycle through some pattern
When I disconnect the 36v PSU from the ESP32 and powered it via 5v USB everything works as expected
Not a clue as to why this is happening - any thoughts?
Thanks for this! I've been wondering this myself. I'm going to modify my lights and do the same this weekend! Do you know if I can control two strings with a single ESP32?
Hi Chris,
Really enjoy your vids. Curious if you have any experience in Twinkly brand lights? I became heavily invested in them before knowing how limited their programming was. Being individually addressable RGB lights I’m sure they could be easily hacked to run with a more robust controller, similar to what you’ve done here with the Govee lights. Unfortunately, I have yet to find any vids about them and I am not knowledgeable enough about the subject to develop the hack myself. I would love to see what you could do to improve the Twinkly controlling options. Thanks for your time, hope to hear from you when you have time.
The twinkly software is exceptionally good when it comes to light mapping, you throw the lights however you want on a window or Christmas tree and then map the lights and they will change sequence to match your pattern.
Chris I am curious, did you/have you attempted to use the segments feature with the GOVEE lights when using WLED?
What do you think about adding some relays or switches so you can switch from govee to wled/xlights at the flip of a switch. I'm thinking permanent install with govee most the year and xlights on the holidays.
Thanks Chris, awesome video.
I wonder if you could wire them both up at the same time, but put an in line switch to toggle one or the other on to make a quick switch without touching wires.
And maybe you could use the dower from the govee to power the esp with a buck/boost converter to eliminate the extra power supply
That's what I've been thinking about doing. devices in my pc come with their onboard lighting effects, but with the press of a remote button or toggle in software progam they switch over to a 3rd party connection which is the motherboards lighting for most people. I'm not smart enought to do a remote switch just yet, but i'll probably find or make a physical switch. I've cut and saved too many controllers from all sorts of devices. Splicing in an esp32 with a switch of some sort is what i've thought everytime.
I'd also like to know if this is possible.
I would be super interested to see if it's possible to control Nanoleaf with WLED.
Especially their new Skylight 🍻
Brilliant
Do you know if there is a way to use wled with rgb ic over strips that use back up data wire ?
Could you do the same with the new Govee Curtain lights you installed on your garage?
If someone can somehow figure out what size that connector Chris cuts off that controller, that would be huge. Still looking for a "no cut solution" for this. Wonder if someone can 3d print the connector 🤔
awesome, can you do it with the govee led curtain?
Have you tried connecting the Govee Neon rope lights to WLED? Should be the same config with different number of LEDs? Thanks
I’ve also hacked the Lumery string lights so I can have them longer than 6 string… currently have 18 strings on my backyard with WLED.
Nice!
Why arent you powering the ESP32 over the Govee Powersupply? If you need a voltage shifter, there cheap and smaller than a usb power brick
Chris, awesome video, and thank you for sharing. I recently purchased a 150' kit of these lights. Once I had them on my house I realized that I was short about 13' from my desired termination point on the house. One more strand would do the trick. I did not use any extensions. Unfortunately, Govee does not recommend going past 150'. Do you know why that is?
i had seen another video where they tested that the 100ft section was drawing 80% of the power supplies rating, so i would assume the 150ft would be close to the max the supply can output.
I can see these working good for under hangs or soffit area but what about spots where the roof has no gutters or under hangs? I usually clip c9 bulbs there. Does GOVEE have an option for me to use there?
WLED is also sound reactive. Just need to load the right .bin and add a microphone to your controller chip. Needs to be an ESP32.
Have you found another way to power the regular Govee permanent outdoor lights?
Hi Chris! Thanks for the video. I'm trying to duplicate that you've done with the ESP board using the Domestic Automation board you made a video about it. I have everything connected and configured as well as I could decipher. When powering on I only the get the first pixel. I used a number between the GND port on the board and the data wire on the Govee pixels and used a jumper between the negative port on the board to the negative 3 position WAGO. Positive is set up the same as it is in your video. I have 12 pixels setup in WLED with WS281x and RGB and GPIO is set for 2. I'm not sure where my mistake is and would be grateful if you could shed some light (pun intended). Thanks !
Have you ever seen any LEDs that include UV along with the RGB?
I Love your Vidios. But you can Power the ESP32 directly via the VIN pin.
It gets automaticly steped down to the right voltage.
Can you use WLED on the new Govee Pro lights?
is it possible the other way around, to control 3rd party led strips or whatever with govee software? i only ask bc I have govee motion sensor and would love if I could sync my leds
I’ve done this to several of their products, I use a different wled controller though. Works great
Do you mind sharing video them ? Sounds nice idea
What about reverse / opposite? Control cheaper leds using Govee.
@@AX-fx7ng I’m sure you could if you had a govee controller lieing around, but at that point I think it would be better to just buy a wled controller
@@Hoss_VegasTTV I think the Voice control & other features would be the perk to use with cheaper LEDs. Hence asking and hoping to see DIYs around that.
Can you have the Govee TV Lights that work with a camera working, but ALSO control them with WLED through for instance SignalRGB ?
So like i can choose or something ? Or is thata bit too much ?
Any pointers on coverting Govee outdoor Spot or Flood lights? Are all Govees WS8211 ?
Are you still limited to150'? If so would a larger power supply work? I have 300' of the Govee lights and would like to have them on using 1 controller.
Will this work with ANY Govee light strip? I've got one of their Bluetooth only indoor strips I would like to control with WLED.
Can you put the pro outdoor lights on WLED?
So this will work with all govee products? Or just these lights for right now?
I been thinking about running this setup in my Son's gaming room controlled by Signal RGB
Can each light be controlled to turn off and on and does it have the capability to do true warm white?
So what do you put your controler in ?
Doing a Y-splice duplicates any effect onto both strands. Might using WLED fix that?
Do you think this would be possible with LifX Z strips?
What direction is the govee led strip going when your holding it?
To have the extension, you increase the power supply?
Hey Chris, will this work with the new pro lights?
this is good to know. Novastella and a few other led light companies are coming out with their own permanent lights
Oh and another question, can you direct me to your hyperion video if youve already attempted building that? If not then please do! 😊
Thank you so much for making this tutorial! Can other Govee products be connected the same way, such as the Govee Christmas String Lights, Govee Curtain Lights, etc…?
Also, if one were to use other non-Govee addressable LEDs in their setup, would it necessitate a second ESP32? Or could other lights be controlled using a different pin on the same board?
I’m curious about that too
I've got the standard (not pro) version like you showed in this video. I have Six strands, but in strand number Five in the sequence I need to remove 2 LEDs from each end in order for it to fit my house correctly. Will WLED allow me to pickup the sequence of lights so the last light in strand Four is followed by what was formerly the 3rd LED in strand Five (now the first LED since 2 LEDs were cut out)? Then once it reaches the 8th LED on strand 5 (formerly LED number 10) can I make it go to LED 1 on strand Six? Hopefully that makes sense... Basically, if I cut out 2 LEDs on each end of strand Five of Six, will WLED recognize that strand Five has 8 LEDs instead of 12 when running a sequence?
Will an esp8266 work for this method or should i buy an esp32?
Is it possible to use the govee controls on any led light strip?
I've never see the curtain lights up close. I wonder if they would work.
Any possibility of flashing the govee controller or is esp32 controller the only possibility?
Would this work with the Govee Curtain Lights? Drives me batty the Curtain lights dont have Lan Control lol.
Are you able to control each individual led via wled and esp32? I know in the govee controller, doesnt seem lile you are able to, at least i didnt find a way. Please let me know
Great video! 2 questions. Since I have 2 sets (1st and 2nd story), is there a way to sync both sets in WLED? Also, assuming 150 total feet is still the max?
WLED has an option to SYNC built into the software, so you can set it so that one strip will copy the other.
Considering the cost of the ESP boards and the cost of the LEDs, it's probably worth spending a little money on buying some and just messing around to see what is possible, before you cut into your expensive lights.
Should I turn the power off before cutting?
I have a question, I purchased 10 pathways lights, the brand is XMCOSY+ Low Voltage Landscape Lights, 200LM Smart LED Pathway Lights with APP Control, Adjustable Warm White&RGB, 12V 6W but the app is limited can’t do much and only charge color all at the same time, I’m wondering is this light can be plugged with one of this muddle controller, please let me know if that is possible…. I’m new to this world of led lights and I don’t know the difference between RGB, RBGI etc…..thank you
Any idea why I would experience flickering using WLED automations when using 72 nodes but don't have any issues when using the govee controller?
The flickering is only on the last 20 or so nodes.
Can you do this with govee bulbs?
Chris! yet again!
Help! I did this but only first led comes up white. No other LEDs come up. I connected back the original govee controller and everything works. But with DigQuad ESP32, it looks like the lights are not receiving data.
love ur content
Thanks Chris - do you know which ws28x the govee lights are using? The power supply says 36v output 🤔 - I would have assumed 24v ws2811 or 12v?
I'm curious about this too... it's unusual to see 36v led strips/pixels so I wonder if the voltage leaving the controller box is 36v?
What about reverse / opposite? Control cheaper leds using Govee.
Help me figure it out please, I received 3 packs of Govee LED Strip Light M1. Each tape is 16.4 feet, you can include only two and then the total length can reach 32.8 feet. But I have a 41 foot room and would like a consistent effect, no chunks.
How to connect an additional piece of tape so that it would be part of the main flight, so that the effect could be as one.
Thank you in advance.
It would be awesome if someone made a plug and play version.
I have Govee 65' 2x32' and WLED only sees it as ONE led.. can't seem to get it to see more tried resetting govee to factory just about everything ...seems I'm missing something.. not sure what it is.. I'm kinda knew to this..
Would this work with the Govee H6173 lights?
Could this be done on the Govee down lights
