- As one of my 10 gear items for Alone Season 6, I brought a Leatherman Surge Multitool with a variety of special modifications. This video explains why I selected the Surge, the modifications to the original model, why i selected those and a bit about how I used them. Also some picks of my tour at Leatherman and some plots to get these tools on Leatherman's radar and potentially into your hands!
Hey Leatherman... myself and my buddies all want one of these really functional, well thought out, tools. Please...
Yep.
A wood carving leatherman would be awesome! Thanks for this great video!
Really good ideas Woniya
instablaster
Put me done for one, please.
I would buy a Woniya special Leatherman edition. I currently carry Leatherman Wave. I have emailed Leatherman to request that they do make a version based on your custom modified Leatherman. My wife and I were pulling for you to win. you had the best shelter in our opinion. You did great in making it as far as your body let you. You did GOOD! Be proud of how you did.
I second this collaboration
I would buy one as well
Leatherman get to it , need a "Woniya" edition.
I’d buy it. Needs your signature so you can get a few royalties. You deserve it!
True Dat Bushnut.
@leatherman I would like to buy The Surge “Woniya” edition.
I'm definitely interested in that as well @leatherman
@wzrubicon 1 do you even know what that means? 🤦♂️
I'd definitely buy a one and a more for gifts. The gouge tool and the can opener revision are so cool. I can think of many times I would use those. Leatherman........you have a new product designed for you for free!
Ill get in touch with leatherman for your version Woniya. Thanks for your insights. Can you share your other leatherman mods with us?
I agree this is the best WLeatherman I have seen by far, and I own 6 or 7 models right now. I would totally buy it for myself and as Christmas presents. They should most certainly name it after you.
This set of modifications makes the Surge just about the perfect bushcraft tool. I'd buy one and I imagine a lot of other leather and wood craft folks would, too.
Most people, like Woniya order the parts from leatherman or fabricate their own. I like a marlin spike so I made one which works on my wave and my surge
O
This is seriously genius, the amount of thought and planning that went into maximizing this tool is very impressive. Way to go Woniya!
Thanks so much! Knowing my life might depend on it was really good motivation!
After 5 years of owning a Surge and seeing it in countless videos I can say this is the cleanest set of modified tools I’ve seen! I love that the mini chisel even has bevels for cleaning notches and I don’t even know how that gouge happened but it looks so clean. I’m impressed at how functional you’ve made an already killer tool
Thank you
Leatherman wake up!!, this amazing woman has the best bushcrafting Surge out there!
@leatherman you’ve got a great brand ambassador here.
Wow ! Those are Excellent modifications to the #LeathermanSurge !!!!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸💯
Can’t beat a good Leatherman. An excellent tool for any woodsman. So many good uses. Invaluable tool. Excellent talk.
Very nice multi-tool.. very versatile and useful.
Most folks who would buy a multitool would already know myriad ways to open bottles or cans. A "Bushcraft Edition" Leatherman Surge, therefore doesn't need either of these. I love the mods you made to your tool. The fantastic saw blade in place of the serrated blade absolutely ROCKS! Love the gouge and the 3 sided chisel. Leatherman may do well to address the wants/needs of the bushcraft/outdoor crowd. Love the "Alone" series. Thanks for sharing.
I have a Surge, but I'd buy a new version with a saw in place of the serrated blade like your custom version!
Yes i hate serated blades! Give us a carbide saw instead!!
I'm not a big fan of multitools because they usually have a lot of tools that I wouldn't want or use. The tools that are on your leatherman, I would definitely use and would definitely purchase one or two if they ever became available! Thank you
Leathrrnan, Another “Surge of Interest”, and what a resourceful person you are. MacGuyver who? You Rock, Woniya 😎😎😎
Amazing information, no wonder why you went so far in the game, really smart, knowledgeable and beautiful
Wow! I love the mods you made! I think my favorite is the gouge! So cool! I didn't know the Surge had those beefy scissors. I have a Leatherman Wave, and I do like using my scissors a lot. It's definitely a weakness of the wave to not have the removable file. I totally hope that Leatherman releases a "woodworkers" edition or "bushcraft" edition of the Leatherman someday. I know the signal is their survival tool, but something more focused on the artsy craftsy side of being out in the bush would be so cool! Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Someday I want to make some mods to mine if I get the opportunity.
That was an awesome tool choice & the modifications was a brilliant idea. I got my first leatherman back in the early 80's & haven't been without one since.
Yeah they can call it the Woniya Express!!! You're amazing Woniya.
I’d buy it if it was a Leatherman Wave with those same modifications! Well done! 👍. I have my Wave and my Surge in my hands. I go for the Wave every time. I just don’t like the size of the Surge. It’s too heavy and too big. Thanks for everything! You’re awesome!
Survival in Wonderland I agreed the surge is a little heavy for every day/every where use. when it is the one thing you've got to do a lot of things with, the extra weight is well worth it!
I’d purchase a version of a leatherman designed by you!!
You did a great job winning Alone Frozen! Me and my wife picked you from the beginning. Your spirit as being one with the land and animals empowered your ability and resolve. You were always grateful and humble. A great example.
Congrats.
Leatherman is at the top of the multi tool world by far.
That is so well thought out. We can tell your experience is substantial and are a person well worth listening too. I’m glad I found your channel.
Wonderful information, I'm taking notes. I especially liked the wood carving enhancements you had added to this tool. Also I never knew Leatherman made kit with a removable sharpening file. I think Les Stroud was the first honest survivalist that openly recommended having a multitool as part of any survival gear. Since then I've purchased a number of them and have them squirreled away in cars, trucks, backpacks and bugout bags. You video has educated me further on options I had not considered before.
I don't watch tv so I've never seen the show but I have to admit your tool changes are solid. I'd keep the can opener myself but I love the idea of a multitool that is functional for woodworking and leather working. A real bushtool that has functions for urban need as well is a fantastic idea
she is an excellent speaker. No "Umm's" or "Ahhh's" in the entire take. Impressive. And she knows her stuff.
2 years later, and your surge is still awesome!
Fantastic. Thanks for sharing this Woniya. I hoped you'd win. You got so far. I'm tempted to do Alone but still need to hone in a few skills. Through training I realized I'll need tool modifications. I found this video precisely for this reason. I'd leap to buy a tool with the mods you have. I have been searching for bushcrafting multitools and folders and I'm amazed how little there is out there that's usable out of the box.
Definitely true. Good luck with your training and application! Thanks for rooting for me! Guessing you might be interested in checking out Alone Frozen- which was an Alone all-stars challenge they ground some of us back to do. I bet you'd appreciate it!
WOW you are not only a survivor/bush-crafter but an engineer as well. You designed the best bush crafting multiplier ever seen. Thank you. Leatherman I pray you are listening orders would be through the roof with Woniya's signature on it!
Woniya, I have been a follower of your book project for over 3 yearsI I loved hearing your Alone experience that you shared with many of us at last September's Rabbitstick gathering in Rexburg. Now, after seeing this video, I am in love your modified version of the Surge. I have carried a Leatherman since 1987, when a good friend gift one to me on my birthday. Leatherman has been a valued tool for me, and part of my everyday carry since the day I received my first one. Somehow, rarely a day goes by that I do not find a use for this vital tool. Now, I think it only appropriate, in your honor, that Leatherman offer the modified Surge and dub it The LeatherWoman!! My wife has always called her muilti-tool, her leatherwoman, why not make it official and christen The LeatherWoman for all the world to enjoy. Glad to see you looking so healthy and happy. Thank you my friend, for sharing your talents and experiences.
I called mine a Leatherwoman for a long time myself, not this model actually, but one I had long ago. They haven't shown interest in working f with me in this project, which i think is really unfortunate. Maybe I'll approach them again!
I'm impressed! Very well thought out mods and a great presentation. I will definitely contact Leatherman in support of your project. It's time they deleted redundant tools and added in some woods worthy selections...
Messaged Leatherman and already received a response back. Fingers crossed... Keep up the pressure, Woniya...
I think she’s absolutely brilliant.
interesting mods, ive got a surge and use a set of jigsaw bits so ive got metal hacksaw, extra long saw etc, the woodsaw blade that coems as standard makes a great striker for a ferro rod, perfect spine, next tool does some cheap bits for the bit holder, and you can get a scalpel holder that will fit in the saw exchanger.....love the surge, so usefull....
Definitely the woniya bushcraft leatherman edition would be awesome! Thought you were awesome on the show! Nice content here!
Wow that is the most practical bushcraft/survival multi tool I've ever seen!
YES!!!!! so on board a bushcraft/carving/leather working specific leatherman would be amazing!!!
Love the modifications to the Leatherman and would buy one tomorrow if it was available!!!
We'll done.
I just found this and I wish more women were like you in your awesomeness. Nothing is greater then a Woman who can do it all in such a great video way. I love this video and I hope more gals follow you because a Woman who can do what you do is Awesome and Beautiful.
Omg yes please I have the wave + but would buy a Woniya Leatherman in a heart beat! You were my favourite on Alone I was so bummed when you decided to leave. Well done you!
Awesome! Hopefully the make that one available! Stay Strong and Free!
Yes please!! Would definitely buy a specialized tool for bushcraft and survival!
i have a leatherman surge, and this was a great video, on looking outside the box-- thank you.
Wow! That lady is pretty! I'm going to have to check out that show she's on!
As a long time Surge user i love every modification...really makes a lot of sense!!
Thanks so much for sharing! I'm upgrading my older / smaller Leatherman and am trying to find a way to purchase a version with the modifications you made to this one. Hopefully it becomes available as a standard release one day soon!
I love the saw mod!!!! Leatherman need to make a surge with one of these!
Oh my goodness, the gouge and chisel are superb ideas!
She's the best!
Truly brilliant.
Yes, please, Leatherman! The Woniya Special Edition multi tool sounds like a bestseller!
I sincerely congratulate you on your well-deserved victory. It's time for laserman manufacturers to get interested in your version. Happy to buy one
such valuable insight here. Team Woniya all the way. For y’all who want to baton with your folding knives/multitools you can half fold the knife so the impacts don’t affect the locking mechanism as much.
Great video! Thoughtful design! I would buy one in a heartbeat...well done and Congrats on your journey.
Such a smart move to customize it. You get so much more use out of it.
Wow! Thank you! You have a new Super Fan! I'm really looking forward to seeing some of your new ideas for Leatherman!
I carry the first design Leatherman acquired ~30 years ago on my web belt along with my BK&T Kukri. One addition that you might add to the Surge is a lanyard.I added a fishing swivel snap attached to the Leatherman and 20lb mono-filament back to a alice clip on my web belt.I wrap the mono-filament around the Leatherman when stored in the pouch.I didn't want to accidentally drop it from my boat while fishing or lose it in a precarious position.I had to change a fouled spark plug in a 2-stroke boat motor out on a lake one time with the Leatherman....it wasn't easy, but it saved the day. :)
Very good video. Congratulations from FRANCE
NICE! Your upgrades were perfect for a crafty woodsman. I would be interested in a custom Leatherman!
That is awesome. Leatherman should offer that version of the Surge in their line but with premium steel on the blade
Leatherman as a crafter and construction worker I would love a Woniya edition Leatherman to go with my original Leatherman. I bought my first from a rep on a construction sight who was out showing a new tool that you were hoping to bring to market, every man on the job bought one. Great tools and her mods are awsome for a different group of buyers.
What tool was it? Did it make it to market?
I'd buy your edition. Those are some great modifications.
Love the leatherman mods! Chisel and woodcarving knife would be amazing for a bushcraft version
Agree, Leatherman, use Woniya's suggestion, I'll buy at least one! A great all in one survival tool! Who needs a phillips head in the woods!
A woman after my own heart!
Normally I detest reality TV. But I guess I'm going to have to watch her episode or episodes
Love your video, The level of detail you use in communicating to us is exemplary. Great spirit, enthusiasm, technique. Thanks ! Now, I've found that the large scissors on the Surge model a little less useful for what I use scissors most often for: trimming fishing line (esp monofilament line.). Tends to hack-cut and leave scuffed-frayed ends more often that do the scissors on the smaller Wave and Super 200 models. Huge differences noted on light line weights such as 3-8 pound test. Every tool may have its own better purposes and you sure made this one suit your needs. Brava !
very interesting. and yes, subtlest make a big difference in a tool, nube to know the smaller versions are perfect for some things
A Leatherman Bushcraft edition sounds like an awesome idea! Maybe with two of the interchangeable attachments. I mean, if Leatherman wanted to they could do a build your own tool and make them customizable so it is the right tool for you.
Loves seeing you at Rabbit Stick in Rexburg Idaho.
Loved your talks.
Leatherman really need to make a model like this , the bushcraft community would go nuts for it .
Very good ideas. Most multitools are made for auto/electrical hobbyists or for household projects. You created a camping/Bushcraft specific tool. I will support your efforts with Leatherman.
I found it fascinating how many people I'm this show brought a leatheeman and used it on wood and game dressing and still behaved phenomenally
The fabulous thing about the Surge is the ability to remove the file to sharpen all of the other blades with it. So good!
Woniya, this is so ironic. The season finale of Alone in Labrador is tonight! I'm rooting for you and the other ladies left! I was disappointed to see Amos tapped out. He was a great guy. Leatherman is my favorite multitool and the best manufacturer in my opinion. I have a number of Leatherman multitools. I'm currently awaiting a black oxide Surge in the mail. My favorite tool thus far is the Super Tool 300. I can see how the outside accessible tools are very handy especially when you have your head on a swivel in the outdoors. The Wave is a great smaller version of the Surge and a close second favorite for me. I'm carious to know how you sanitized the Surge, did you rinse it off with boing water? The only down fall about the Surge or the smaller Wave design is there's so many crevices to clean. Hygiene and sanitation is very important. When processing game of any size more surface area to get blood, residue, etc on. God Bless you and we'll see you in the wilderness.
I love your new ideas for a new leatherman!
I picked up your survival card from Grim Workshop. When I read the back, I decided to look into your story. Glad I did. I've seen only three of your videos but you've got me as a subscriber.
great to hear, thanks David!
outstanding ! i hope they listen and bring you in on this as a designer.
Great ideas for the multi-tool. I hope Leatherman listens to you.
A Surge is my EDC. But these mods are great. Really makes it a better tool.
Wow I’m impressed. I’ve been a Leatherman user for more than 20 years and am I think on my 5th one now, which is my third Wave. Would so love to mod it to having such options, especially gouge and removable file! Always a fan of Leatherman but would be so keen to have more options 🤞
This is awesome Woniya! Just finished watching seasson 6. I bought a modified leatherman surge from Texas Tool Crafters with a Damascus main blade that i carry it every day and get a ton of comments on it. Unfortunately there out of businesses now. Never seen one modified this much I love it!
cool!
this has got to be one of the most comprehensive and authoritative review for a leatherman tool since we saw her use this throughout the series. I have the wave and the rebar, and planning to get a signal soon. The surge will be my next tool for sure.
EDIT: to proud surge owners out there, since the surge is one of the larger tools that leatherman has, do you really feel the weight when you're carrying this on your person and what is the best way to carry this?
Impressive mods on that Surge! Well done!
Great video...hoping that I could be on Alone, you answered a lot of the questions I had, regarding the multitool rules. Thank you for that.
I also purchased the Surge in case an opportunity for me to go arose. Many of your modifications were spot-on with mine too, like having a saw, a chisel, gouge, awl/punch, etc.
Also, just so you know, I was pulling for you on Alone and hoping that you’d be the first woman to win.
And, that you looked so beautiful in this video too. 😉
Definitely on my bushcraft list must haves
Great features! Make it, Leatherman!
Hoping that Leatherman by now is making a limited Woniya Surge Edition! I will be waiting. Keep us posted 😃
Love the Leatherman Surge
I'd love to have the woniya version of the Leatherman surge multitool!
Very cool mods!
I EDC my Wave+, but my Surge is definitely my SHTF tool.
I'm actually pretty happy with the toolset, for the most.
*But* i, like you, don't really have need of a serrated blade, I almost never use them.
I love the saw idea, but sense I'm not confined to the rules of Alone, I would *loove* to see LM put their *Bit Extender/Adapter* in place of the serrated blade.
That would of course free up internal space for..a chisel, gouge, whatever. I would get rid of the smaller flat head as well, its really unnecessary with the bit driver, and use that space for the more unique tool set.
Really enjoyed watching this season, you were a fine competitor and have designed a very good tool set. Thank you so much for sharing. I go to the Leatherman factory store whenever I'm in Portland, will definitely ask about the status of a bushcraft Surge.
This woman was so tough, but Jordan would not be denied.
Well thought out and very useful. I understand Leatherman is a multi-tool designed for modern labor task and they have done that very well. However they are missing a great market when with a little effort they could make a top rate "Bushcraft" multi-tool. I even like the idea of a build your own multi-tool by a web site. Leatherman better get hot or someone else will get the jump on this. Love your videos and think your a very special lady.
I wouldn't hesitate to drop $125 to $150 on a bushcraft/woodcarving model of a Leatherman!!!!! C'mon Leatherman, make it happen! Great work!
Yes, I would happily buy one or ten.
I absolutely love your video and the Leatherman Surge. I think Leatherman would be wise to the idea of people requesting modified multitools and/or parts. I have and use my Wave on a daily basis. I want to modify it slightly. For example, upgrade the knife steel to 154CM steel on the plain edge, and the serrated blade. the pocket clip needs to be made from stronger steel because I've broken 2 of them being highly active. I would rather have a couple upgraded parts than pay an arm and a leg for a leatherman Charge TI.
I do love the removable blade exchanger,i.bought a hacksaw blade for mine an extra wood blades and a multipurpose blade for plastic an what not,I also purchased me a silky big boy outback edition.
A bush craft version with crafty options would be awsome
Can only agree. I have in my mind, designed a tool almost like that many times
Backup knife always a good idea. Two is one, one is none. I have several Leatherman but my favorite remains the old original model, which I don't think they make any more. I have one for over 30 years and it just gets better with age.
love it. I have carried a Leatherman for years, got my first at around 17. Joined at retired from military and it was something i never was never without when i deployed. Military tried to get me to use the Gerber multi tool but i gave it back, why try a hand pinching sub par implement. I am a novice bush crafter and avid outdoors person. I think the modifications you made make total since, and i would trade my wave for one like that if it was offered.
Hell yeah! We would all like a tool like that!
